Colistin (polymyxin E) is an antibiotic that is effective against multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. However, the high incidence of nephrotoxicity caused by colistin limits its clinical use. To identify compounds that might ameliorate colistin-induced nephrotoxicity, we obtained 1707 compounds from the Korea Chemical Bank and used a high-content screening (HCS) imaging-based assay. In this way, we found that bimatoprost (one of prostaglandin F2α analogue) ameliorated colistin-induced nephrotoxicity. To further assess the effects of bimatoprost on colistin-induced nephrotoxicity, we used in vitro and in vivo models. In cultured human proximal tubular cells (HK-2), colistin induced dose-dependent cytotoxicity. The number of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells, indicative of apoptosis, was higher in colistin-treated cells, but this effect of colistin was ameliorated by cotreatment with bimatoprost. The generation of reactive oxygen species, assessed using 2,7-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate, was less marked in cells treated with both colistin and bimatoprost than in those treated with colistin alone. Female C57BL/6 mice (n = 10 per group) that were intraperitoneally injected with colistin (10 mg/kg/12 hr) for 14 days showed high blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine concentrations that were reduced by the coadministration of bimatoprost (0.5 mg/kg/12 hr). In addition, kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM1) and Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) expression also reduced by bimatoprost administration. Further investigation in tubuloid and kidney organoids also showed that bimatoprost attenuated the nephrotoxicity by colistin, showing dose-dependent reducing effect of KIM1 expression. The last decade witnessed the emergence of a new family of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides named MXenes, which quickly gained momentum due to their exceptional electrical, mechanical, optical, and tunable functionalities. These outstanding properties also rendered them attractive materials for biomedical and biosensing applications, including drug delivery systems, antimicrobial applications, tissue engineering, sensor probes, auxiliary agents for photothermal therapy and hyperthermia applications, etc. The hydrophilic nature of MXenes with rich surface functional groups is advantageous for biomedical applications over hydrophobic nanoparticles that may require complicated surface modifications. As an emerging 2D material with numerous phases and endless possible combinations with other 2D materials, 1D materials, nanoparticles, macromolecules, polymers, etc., MXenes opened a vast terra incognita for diverse biomedical applications. Recently, MXene research picked up the pace and resulted in a flood of literature reports with significant advancements in the biomedical field. In this context, this review will discuss the recent advancements, design principles, and working mechanisms of some interesting MXene-based biomedical applications. It also includes major progress, as well as key challenges of various types of MXenes and functional MXenes in conjugation with drug molecules, metallic nanoparticles, polymeric substrates, and other macromolecules. Finally, the future possibilities and challenges of this magnificent material are discussed in detail.

One critical factor for bolometer sensitivity is efficient electromagnetic heating of thermistor materials, which plasmonic nanogap structures can provide through the electric field enhancement. In this report, using finite element method simulation, electromagnetic heating of nanorod dimer antennas with a nanogap filled with vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) was studied for long-wavelength infrared detection. Because VO 2 is a thermistor material, the electrical resistance between the two dimer ends depends on the dimer's temperature. The simulation results show that, due to the high heating ability of the nanogap, the temperature rise is several times higher than expected from the areal coverage. This excellent performance is observed over various nanorod lengths and gap widths, ensuring wavelength tunability and ultrafast operating speed, thereby making the dimer structures a promising candidate for high sensitivity bolometers., (© 2021. DNA repair defects are important factors in cancer development. High DNA repair activity can affect cancer progression and chemoresistance. DNA double-strand breaks in cancer cells caused by anticancer agents can be restored by non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) and homologous recombination repair (HRR). Our previous study has identified E2F1 as a key gene in bladder cancer progression. In this study, DNA repair genes related to E2F1 were analyzed, and RAD54L involved in HRR was identified. In gene expression analysis of bladder cancer patients, the survival of patients with high RAD54L expression was shorter with cancer progression than in patients with low RAD54L expression. This study also revealed that E2F1 directly binds to the promoter region of RAD54L and regulates the transcription of RAD54L related to the HRR pathway. This study also confirmed that DNA breaks are repaired by RAD54L induced by E2F1 in bladder cancer cells treated with MMC. In summary, RAD54L was identified as a new target directly regulated by E2F1. Our results suggest that, E2F1 and RAD54L could be used as diagnostic markers for bladder cancer progression and represent potential therapeutic targets.

Although the 5-year survival rate of patients diagnosed with nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) has reached 85%, more than 50% of patients suffer from frequent recurrences. To identify molecular targets associated with recurrence of NMIBC, we analyzed gene expression data and found that FOXM1 and FANCD2 were involved in recurrence. Therefore, we investigated how these genes were involved in the mechanism of recurrence and confirmed their usefulness as biomarkers. Investigation have shown that FOXM1 directly regulated the transcription of FANCD2, which is the key gene of the Fanconi anemia (FA) pathway. Depletion of FOXM1 resulted in DNA repair defects in the FA pathway and in decreased resistance to chemotherapy. Thus, the FANCD2-associated FA pathway activated by FOXM1 is an important mechanism involved in chemotherapy-related recurrence. In conclusion, FOXM1 and FANCD2 can be used as prognostic factors that are associated with high risk of recurrence and with anticancer drug resistance properties in NMIBC patients.

Tristetraprolin (TTP), a well-characterized AU-rich element (ARE) binding protein, functions as a tumor suppressor gene. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a bioactive substance derived from a natural medicinal plant affects the induction of TTP and to elucidate its mechanism. We examined the effects of natural bioactive materials including Resveratrol (RSV), thymoquinone (TQ) and curcumin on the expression of TTP in cancer cell. TQ derived from a natural plant Nigella sativa increased the expression levels of TTP mRNA and proteins in a dose-dependent manner in gastric and breast cancer cells. TQ-induced TTP increased the instability of MUC4 mRNA by direct binding of TTP to ARE in the 3'UTR of MUC4 mRNA. The induction of TTP by TQ also reduced the proliferation, migration and invasion of cancer cells. The expression of the epithelial-mesenchymal (EMT)-related genes, which were target genes of TTP, was also decreased by the TQ treatment. In the in vivo experiments using mouse melanoma cells, TQ-induced TTP inhibited metastasis of tumor cells. We have found that TQ-induced TTP might inhibit metastasis by reducing tumor cell migration and invasion through destabilization of MUC4 mRNA, which suggest the MUC4 as a novel target to TTP.

Nanoparticles (NPs) of protein-based materials have become one of the most promising candidates for drug carriers in drug-delivery systems because of their in vivo nontoxicity, biodegradability, compatibility with hydrophilic drugs, and adaptability to the human body. Many studies have investigated the fabrication of protein NPs from human serum albumin (HSA) as a new drug carrier. It is important for these NPs to remain in the blood until they reach their therapeutic target to achieve the desired effect; the quicker the clearance of drugs from the body, the shorter is the residence time of drugs in the body, which eventually reduces drug efficacy. Macrophage uptake is a major mechanism for clearance of NPs from the body, so, reducing the degree of macrophage uptake is a major challenge in drug-delivery systems. Original studies of HSA NP uptake by macrophages showed that denatured HSA and HSA NPs synthesized with 80% (v/v) ethanol showed a high degree of macrophage uptake. We found that HSA NPs synthesized with lower ethanol content at pH 7 showed lower macrophage uptake in in vitro macrophage cellular uptake experiments. The effects of the preparation parameters of ethanol concentration, pH, and glutaraldehyde on the macrophage uptake of NPs were thoroughly studied. This newly developed protein NP with lower macrophage uptake has potential application as a drug carrier for many delivery systems.

We report a colloidal quantum dot (CQD) distributed feedback (DFB) laser structure containing a chirped grating. The device exhibits single-mode DFB lasing, of which the wavelength is spatially dispersed in a single chip. A period-chirped surface grating is fabricated using a modified Lloyd-type laser interference lithography setup, where a flat Lloyd's mirror is replaced with a concave one. A dense red-emitting CdSe/CdS/ZnS CQD film is prepared on a temporary substrate by spin-coating, which is subsequently released and wet-transferred onto a period-chirped quartz surface grating. Upon optical excitation, the fabricated DFB laser device lases in a single mode at a laser threshold of ∼400 μJ cm-2, with its lasing wavelength shifted linearly (in proportion to the grating pitch) along the chirp direction from 613.4 nm to 623.2 nm over a distance of ∼5.6 mm.

Coupled nanoantennas as metamaterial unit elements possess peculiar spectral and radiational behaviors. We show that nanoantennas made of two identical plasmonic slot resonators can greatly enhance the quality factors of resonance spectra and control radiation patterns through the selective excitation of bright and dark coupled modes. We confirm experimentally the enhanced quality factor of a bright mode in coupled nanoantennas. Adding phase modulators to the coupled microwave antennas, we demonstrate the "dark mode only" excitation of coupled microwave antennas with an incident plane wave. We also show that the bright-to-dark mode conversion and the related changes in radiation patterns can be controlled by the polarization of incident waves. In particular, we achieve leftward or rightward uni-directional radiation upon the injection of left or right circularly polarized waves.

Misorientation-angle dependence on layer thickness is an intriguing feature of van der Waals materials, which causes stark optical gain and electrical transport modulation. However, the influence of misorientation angle on phase transformation is not determined yet. Herein, this phenomenon in a MoS 2 multilayer via in situ electron-beam irradiation is reported. An AA'-stacked MoS 2 bilayer undergoes structural transformation from the 2H semiconducting phase to the 1T' metallic phase, similar to a MoS 2 monolayer, which is confirmed via in situ transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, non-AA' stacking, which has no local AA' stacking order in the Moiré pattern, does not reveal such a phase transformation. While a collective sliding motion of chalcogen atoms easily occurs during the transformation in AA' stacking, in non-AA' stacking it is suppressed by the weak van der Waals strength and by the chalcogen atoms interlocked at different orientations, which disfavor their kinetics by the increased entropy of mixing., (© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We study the efficiency of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) under frequency comb excitation. We calculate the power density of the anti-Stokes signal for two major cases: (1) molecular excitation by frequency comb and cw probe and, (2) both excitation and probing by frequency combs. In the first case, average CARS power varies as an inverse third degree of frequency combs free spectral range (FSR -3 ); in the second case, it varies as FSR -5 . These results were applied to the CARS on blood glucose under frequency comb excitation. It was found that the resulting glucose CARS signal could approach nanowatt (nW) level at FSR=10  GHz.

The ability of metasurfaces to manipulate light at the subwavelength scale offers unprecedented functionalities for passive and active lasing devices. However, applications of metasurfaces to optical devices are rare due to fabrication difficulties. Here, we present quantum dot light emitting diodes (QDLEDs) with a metasurface-integrated metal electrode and demonstrate microscopically controlled LED emission. By incorporating slot-groove antennas into the metal electrode, we show that LED emission from randomly polarized QD sources can be polarized and directed at will. Utilizing the relation between polarization and emission direction, we also demonstrate microscopic LED beam splitting through the selective choice of polarization.

We demonstrate optical pumping lasers based on colloidal quantum dots, with a very thin geometry consisting of a ≈20 nm thick film. Obstacles in ultrasmall laser devices come from the limitation of gain materials and the size of cavities for lasing modes, which requires a minimum thickness of the gain media (typically greater than 50-100 nm). Here we introduce dielectric waveguide structures with a high refractive index, in order to reduce the thickness of quantum dot gain media as well as their threshold energy (≈39 % compared to the original gain medium). Finite-difference time-domain simulations show that the modal confinement factor of thinner quantum dot films can be improved by the presence of an adjacent waveguide layer. We also discuss the possible role of dielectric waveguide layers for efficient heat dissipation during optical pumping. Integrating an extremely thin colloidal quantum dot gain medium into optical waveguides is a promising platform for downscaling on-chip photonic integrated devices, as well as investigating extreme interactions between light and matter such as surface plasmon-photon coupling., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Phosphors, long-known color-converting photonic agents, are gaining increasing attention owing to the interest in white LEDs and related applications. Conventional material-based approaches to phosphors focus on obtaining the desired absorption/emission wavelengths and/or improving quantum efficiency. Here, we report a novel approach for enhancing the performance of phosphors: structural modification of phosphors. We incorporated inorganic colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) into a lateral one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PhC) thin-film structure, with its photonic band-edge (PBE) modes matching the energy of 'excitation photons' (rather than 'emitted photons', as in most other PBE application devices). At resonance, we observed an approximately 4-fold enhancement of fluorescence over the reference bulk phosphor, which reflects an improved absorption of the excitation photons. This nano-structural engineering approach is a paradigm shift in the phosphor research area and may help to develop next-generation higher efficiency phosphors with novel characteristics.

The dopamine transporter SLC6A3 (DAT1) mediates uptake of dopamine into presynaptic terminals. In addition, in previous reports, hypertensive rats were associated with DAT gene, but the genetic association with SLC6A3 and hypertension is still unknown. We examined the distribution of variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs) and conducted polymorphic analysis of the entire region of SLC6A3. Ten VNTR regions (MS1-10) were revealed throughout the intronic and UTRs; seven VNTR regions were newly isolated and three VNTRs were previously reported. Four VNTR regions (SLC6A3-MS1, -MS4, -MS8 [rs3836790], and -MS9 [rs28363170]) showed polymorphism and these loci were found to be transmitted through meiosis following Mendelian inheritance. These VNTR polymorphisms may be useful markers for paternity mapping and DNA fingerprinting. Furthermore, we also conducted a case-control study between the controls and essential hypertensive cases. Analysis of the genotypes of SLC6A3-MS8 (rs3836790) revealed that having an 8/6-repeat allele, which was only detected in hypertensive cases, was associated with hypertension (p < 0.05). Additional significant association was identified between the short 7-repeat allele of SLC6A3-MS9 (rs28363170) and the occurrence of hypertension (odds ratio 2.02; p < 0.05). These results revealed the genetic association between SLC6A3 and hypertension, and the specific VNTR alleles of SLC6A3 may be a risk factor for hypertension.

Despite the direct band gap of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), their optical gain remains limited because of the poor light absorption in atomically thin, layered materials. Most approaches to improve the optical gain of TMDs mainly involve modulation of the active materials or multilayer stacking. Here, we report a method to enhance the optical absorption and emission in MoS2 simply through the design of a nanostructured substrate. The substrate consisted of a dielectric nanofilm spacer (TiO2) and metal film. The overall photoluminescence intensity from monolayer MoS2 on the nanostructured substrate was engineered based on the TiO2 thickness and amplified by Fabry-Perot interference. In addition, the neutral exciton emission was selectively amplified by plasmonic excitations from the local field originating from the surface roughness of the metal film with spacer thicknesses of less than 10 nm. We further demonstrate that the quality factor of the device can also be engineered by selecting a spacer material with a different refractive index.

Aberrant expression of BORIS/CTCFL (Brother of the Regulator of Imprinted Sites/CTCF-like protein) is reported in different malignancies. In this study, we characterized the entire promoter region of BORIS/CTCFL, including the CpG islands, to assess the relationship between BORIS expression and lung cancer. To simplify the construction of luciferase reporter cassettes with various-sized portions of the upstream region, genomic copies of BORIS were isolated using TAR cloning technology. We analyzed three promoter blocks: the GATA/CCAAT box, the CpG islands and the minisatellite region BORIS-MS2. Polymorphic minisatellite sequences were isolated from genomic DNA prepared from the blood of controls and cases. Of the three promoter blocks, the GATA/CCAAT box was determined to be a critical element of the core promoter, while the CpG islands and the BORIS-MS2 minisatellite region were found to act as regulators. Interestingly, the polymorphic minisatellite region BORIS-MS2 was identified as a negative regulator that repressed the expression levels of luciferase reporter cassettes less effectively in cancer cells compared with normal cells. We also examined the association between the size of BORIS-MS2 and lung cancer in a case-control study with 590 controls and 206 lung cancer cases. Rare alleles of BORIS-MS2 were associated with a statistically significantly increased risk of lung cancer (odds ratio, 2.04; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-4.08; and P=0.039). To conclude, our data provide information on the organization of the BORIS promoter region and gene regulation in normal and cancer cells. In addition, we propose that specific alleles of the BORIS-MS2 region could be used to identify the risk for lung cancer.

Although two-dimensional monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides reveal numerous unique features that are inaccessible in bulk materials, their intrinsic properties are often obscured by environmental effects. Among them, work function, which is the energy required to extract an electron from a material to vacuum, is one critical parameter in electronic/optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a large work function modulation in MoS2 via ambient gases. The work function was measured by an in situ Kelvin probe technique and further confirmed by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. A measured work function of 4.04 eV in vacuum was converted to 4.47 eV with O2 exposure, which is comparable with a large variation in graphene. The homojunction diode by partially passivating a transistor reveals an ideal junction with an ideality factor of almost one and perfect electrical reversibility. The estimated depletion width obtained from photocurrent mapping was ∼200 nm, which is much narrower than bulk semiconductors.

We report the room-temperature lasing action from two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) structures composed of a passive Si3N4 backbone with an over-coat of CdSe/CdS/ZnS colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) for optical gain. When optically excited, devices lased in dual PC band-edge modes, with the modal dominance governed by the thickness of the CQD over-layer. The demonstrated laser platform should have an impact on future photonic integrated circuits as the on-chip coupling between active and passive components is readily achievable.

Purpose: Previous study identified E2F1 as a key mediator of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) progression. The aim of this study was to identify the E2F1-related genes associated with poor prognosis and aggressive characteristics of bladder cancer., Experimental Design: Microarray analysis was performed to find E2F1-related genes associated with tumor progression and aggressiveness in the gene expression data from 165 primary patients with bladder cancer. The biologic activity of E2F1-related genes in tumor progression and aggressiveness was confirmed with experimental assays using bladder cancer cells and tumor xenograft assay., Results: The expression of E2F1 was significantly associated with EZH2 and SUZ12. The overexpression of E2F1, EZH2, and SUZ12 enhanced cancer progression including cell colony formation, migration, and invasiveness. Knockdown of these genes reduced motility, blocked invasion, and decreased tumor size in vivo. E2F1 bound the proximal EZH2 and SUZ12 promoter to activate transcription, suggesting that E2F1 and its downstream effectors, EZH2 and SUZ12, could be important mediators for the cancer progression. In addition, we confirmed an association between these genes and aggressive characteristics. Interestingly, the treatment of anticancer drugs to the cells overexpressing E2F1, EZH2, and SUZ12 induced the expression of CD44, KLF4, OCT4, and ABCG2 known as cancer stem cell (CSC)-related genes., Conclusions: The link between E2F1, EZH2, and/or SUZ12 revealed that E2f1 directly regulates transcription of the EZH2 and SUZ12 genes. The signature of E2F1-EZH2-SUZ12 shows a predictive value for prognosis in bladder tumors and the E2F1-EZH2-SUZ12-driven transcriptional events may regulate the cancer aggressiveness and chemo-resistance, which may provide opportunity for development of new treatment modalities., (©2015 American Association for Cancer Research.)

We present a Babinet-inverted optical nanoantenna integrated with a plasmonic waveguide. Using an integrated nanoantenna, we can couple the plasmon guide mode in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure into the resonant antenna feed directly. The resonantly excited feed slot then radiates to free space and generates a magnetic dipole-like far-field pattern. The coupling efficiency of the integrated nanoantenna is calculated as being approximately 19% using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D FDTD) simulation. By adding an auxiliary groove structure along with the feed, the radiation direction can be controlled similar to an optical Yagi-Uda antenna. We also determine, both theoretically and experimentally, that groove depth plays a significant role to function groove structure as a reflector or a director. The demonstrated Babinet-inverted optical nanoantenna integrated with a plasmonic waveguide can be used as a "plasmonic via" in plasmonic nanocircuits.

We investigated systematic modulation of the Dirac point voltage of graphene transistors by changing the type of ionic liquid used as a main gate dielectric component. Ion gels were formed from ionic liquids and a non-triblock-copolymer-based binder involving UV irradiation. With a fixed cation (anion), the Dirac point voltage shifted to a higher voltage as the size of anion (cation) increased. Mechanisms for modulation of the Dirac point voltage of graphene transistors by designing ionic liquids were fully understood using molecular dynamics simulations, which excellently matched our experimental results. It was found that the ion sizes and molecular structures play an essential role in the modulation of the Dirac point voltage of the graphene. Through control of the position of their Dirac point voltages on the basis of our findings, complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-like graphene-based inverters using two different ionic liquids worked perfectly even at a very low source voltage (V(DD) = 1 mV), which was not possible for previous works. These results can be broadly applied in the development of low-power-consumption, flexible/stretchable, CMOS-like graphene-based electronic devices in the future.

Purpose: Although standard treatment with transurethral resection and intravesical therapy (IVT) is known to be effective to address the clinical behavior of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), many patients fail to respond to the treatment and frequently experience disease recurrence. Here, we aim to identify a prognostic molecular signature that predicts the NMIBC heterogeneity and response to IVT., Experimental Design: We analyzed the genomic profiles of 102 patients with NMIBC to identify a signature associated with disease recurrence. The validity of the signature was verified in three independent patient cohorts (n = 658). Various statistical methods, including a leave-one-out cross-validation and multivariate Cox regression analyses, were applied to identify a signature. We confirmed an association between the signature and tumor aggressiveness with experimental assays using bladder cancer cell lines., Results: Gene expression profiling in 102 patients with NMIBC identified a CCNB1 signature associated with disease recurrence, which was validated in another three independent cohorts of 658 patients. The CCNB1 signature was shown to be an independent risk factor by a multivariate analysis and subset stratification according to stage and grade [HR, 2.93; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.302-6.594; P = 0.009]. The subset analysis also revealed that the signature could identify patients who would benefit from IVT. Finally, gene network analyses and experimental assays indicated that NMIBC recurrence could be mediated by FOXM1-CCNB1-Fanconi anemia pathways., Conclusions: The CCNB1 signature represents a promising diagnostic tool to identify patients with NMIBC who have a high risk of recurrence and to predict response to IVT., (©2014 American Association for Cancer Research.)

Nanophotonics capable of directing radiation or enhancing quantum-emitter transition rates rely on plasmonic nanoantennas. We present here a novel Babinet-inverted magnetic-dipole-fed multislot optical Yagi-Uda antenna that exhibits highly unidirectional radiation to free space, achieved by engineering the relative phase of the interacting surface plasmon polaritons between the slot elements. The unique features of this nanoantenna can be harnessed for realizing energy transfer from one waveguide to another by working as a future "optical via".

NELL2 was first identified as a mammalian homolog of the chicken NEL protein. It was expressed in neurons and has been suggested to play a role in cell survival. However, no clear evidence has yet been available for functions of NELL2. In this study, we found two E2F1 binding sites located in the NELL2 promoter region. We examined the expression of NELL2 and E2F1 in human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB231, MCF7) and bladder cancer cells (5637, UC5). In MDA-MB231 and 5637, the expression levels of NELL2 and E2F1 were higher. To examine the interaction between E2F1 and NELL2, the binding activity was checked by a promoter assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation. From the results, we suggest that NELL2 is a novel target gene of E2F1, which is a key regulator of cell proliferation. We reveal that expression of NELL2 is regulated by E2F1, specifically, mRNA and protein levels of NELL2 are elevated upon activation of exogenous E2F1. Moreover, cells overexpressing NELL2 increased their invasive ability and an enhancement of the effect was observed when NELL2 and E2F1 were coexpressed in MDA-MB231 cells. Therefore, we suggest a novel activity for NELL2 in cancer progression through the regulation of E2F1.

The patterning of colloidal quantum dots with nanometer resolution is essential for their application in photonics and plasmonics. Several patterning approaches, such as the use of polymer composites, molecular lock-and-key methods, inkjet printing and microcontact printing of quantum dots have been recently developed. Herein, we present a simple method of patterning colloidal quantum dots for photonic nanostructures such as straight lines, rings and dot patterns either on transparent or metallic substrates. Sub-10 nm width of the patterned line could be achieved with a well-defined sidewall profile. Using this method, we demonstrate a surface plasmon launcher from a quantum dot cluster in the visible spectrum.

BORIS is a member of the cancer-testis gene family that comprises genes normally expressed only in testis but abnormally activated in different malignancies. In this study, we examined the relation between BORIS expression and gastric cancer, which is the most common cancer in Korea. Abnormal BORIS expression in the patient's gastric cancer tissues was observed. We checked the methylation status of the gene in gastric cancer tissue, because the regulation by methylation in its CpG islands is well known for BORIS. However, there was no correlation between the methylation status and gene expression. Then, we focused on the minisatellites (variable number of tandem repeats) of BORIS as another possible regulator for this abnormal expression. Previously, we reported the characterization of BORIS-MS2 and determined the frequency of alleles in cancer patients. A case-control study was performed using DNA from 774 controls and 496 patients with gastric cancer. There was no significant difference observed in the overall distribution of minisatellite alleles. These results suggest that additional different regulators for the abnormal BORIS expression in gastric cancer may exist. Additionally, we performed a segregation analysis of BORIS-MS2 with genomic DNA obtained from two generations of five families and from three generations of two families. BORIS-MS2 alleles were transmitted through meiosis following Mendelian inheritance, which suggests that this polymorphic minisatellite could be a useful marker for paternity mapping and DNA fingerprinting.

We report designs for a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity with modulated mode-gap barriers based on the lowest dielectric band. These cavities have an ultrahigh theoretical quality factor (Q) of 10(7)-10(8) while maintaining a very small modal volume of 0.6-2.0 (lambda/n)(3), which are the highest Q for any nanocavities with SiO(2) under-cladding. We have fabricated these SOI 1D-PhC cavities and confirmed that they exhibited a Q of 3.6 x 10(5), which is also the highest measured Q for SOI-type PhC nanocavities. We have also applied the same design to 1D PhC cavities with air claddings, and found that they exhibit a theoretical quality factor higher than 10(9). The fabricated air-cladding 1D Si PhC cavities have showed a quality factor of 7.2 x 10(5), which is close to the highest Q value for 1D PhC cavities.

We identified new photonic structures and phenomenon that are analogous to alloy crystals and the associated electronic bandgap engineering. From a set of diamond-lattice microwave photonic crystals of randomly mixed silica and alumina spheres but with a well defined mixing composition, we observed that both bandedges of the L-point bandgap monotonically shifted with very little bowing as the composition was varied. The observed results were in excellent agreement with the virtual crystal approximation theory originally developed for electronic properties of alloy crystals. This result signifies the similarity and correspondence between photonics and electronics.
