Internal gravity waves (IGWs) are likely to cause mixing in stellar interiors. Studies show that the mixing by these waves changes drastically across age and mass (Varghese et al. 2023, arXiv:2211.06432). Here, we study the effect of rotation on this wave mixing by considering a 7 M$_{\odot}$ model at ZAMS and midMS. We compare the mixing profiles at a range of rotation rates ($1\times 10^{-5}$, $2\times 10^{-5}$, $3\times 10^{-5}$, $4\times 10^{-5}$ and $1\times 10^{-4}$ rad.s$^{-1}$) and observe that the mixing decreases with decreasing Rossby number. This can be attributed to the effect of rotation on convection which influences the amplitude with which the waves are excited near the convective-radiative interface., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted at ApJ

We present 3D full star simulations, reaching up to 90% of the total stellar radius, for three $7M_\odot$ stars of different ages (ZAMS, midMS and TAMS). A comparison with several theoretical prescriptions shows the generation spectra for all three ages are dominated by convective plumes. Two distinct overshooting layers are observed, with most plumes stopped within the layer situated directly above the convective boundary (CB); overshooting to the second, deeper layer becomes increasingly more infrequent with stellar age. Internal gravity wave (IGW) propagation is significantly impacted in the midMS and TAMS models as a result of some IGWs getting trapped within their Brunt-V\"{a}is\"{a}l\"{a} frequency spikes. A fundamental change in the wave structure across radius is also observed, driven by the effect of density stratification on IGW propagation causing waves to become evanescent within the radiative zone, with older stars being affected more strongly. We find that the steepness of the frequency spectrum at the surface increases from ZAMS to the older models, with older stars also showing more modes in their spectra., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures / Accepted at ApJ

Stars with masses above 1.6 solar masses generally possess convective cores and radiative envelopes, which allows the propagation of outward-travelling internal gravity waves. We have studied the generation and propagation of IGWs in such stars using two-dimensional, fully nonlinear hydrodynamical simulations with realistic stellar reference states from the one-dimensional stellar evolution code, Modules for Stellar Astrophysics. Compared to previous similar works, this study utilises radius-dependent thermal diffusivity profiles for 5 different stellar masses at the middle of main sequence: 3 - 13 solar masses. From the simulations, we find that the surface perturbations are larger for higher masses, but no noticeable trends are observed for the frequency slopes with different stellar masses. The slopes are also similar to the results from previous works. We compare our simulation results with stellar photometric data from a recent survey and find that for frequency intervals above 8 microHz, there is a good agreement between the temperature frequency slopes from the simulations and the surface brightness variations of these observed stars, indicating that the brightness variations are caused by core-generated IGWs., Comment: 17 pages, 30 figures, 5 tables

Internal gravity waves (IGWs) can cause mixing in the radiative interiors of stars. We study this mixing by introducing tracer particles into two - dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic simulations. Following the work of Rogers & McElwaine (2017), arXiv:1709.04920, we extend our study to different masses (3 M$_{\odot}$, 7 M$_{\odot}$ and 20 M$_{\odot}$) and ages (ZAMS, midMS and TAMS). The diffusion profiles of these models are influenced by various parameters such as the Brunt-V\"ais\"al\"a frequency, density, thermal damping, the geometric effect and the frequencies of waves contributing to these mixing profiles. We find that the mixing profile changes dramatically across age. In younger stars, we noted that the diffusion coefficient increases towards the surface, whereas in older stars the initial increase in the diffusion profile is followed by a decreasing trend. We also find that mixing is stronger in more massive stars. Hence, future stellar evolution models should include this variation. In order to aid the inclusion of this mixing in one-dimensional (1D) stellar evolution models, we determine the dominant waves contributing to these mixing profiles and present a prescription that can be included in 1D models., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted at ApJ

We use results of shallow-water magnetohydrodynamics (SWMHD) to place estimates on the minimum magnetic field strengths required to cause atmospheric wind variations (and therefore westward venturing hotspots) for a dataset of hot Jupiters (HJs), including HAT-P-7b, CoRoT-2b, Kepler-76, WASP-12b, and WASP-33b, on which westward hotspots have been observationally inferred. For HAT-P-7b and CoRoT-2b our estimates agree with past results; for Kepler-76b we find that the critical dipolar magnetic field strength, over which the observed wind variations can be explained by magnetism, lies between $4\mbox{ G}$ and $19\mbox{ G}$; for WASP-12b and WASP-33b westward hotspots can be explained by $1\mbox{ G}$ and $2\mbox{ G}$ dipolar fields respectively. Additionally, to guide future observational missions, we identify $61$ further HJs that are likely to exhibit magnetically-driven atmospheric wind variations and predict these variations are highly-likely in $\sim 40$ of the hottest HJs., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Magnetically-driven hotspot variations (which are tied to atmospheric wind variations) in hot Jupiters are studied using non-linear numerical simulations of a shallow-water magnetohydrodynamic (SWMHD) system and a linear analysis of equatorial SWMHD waves. In hydrodynamic models, mid-to-high latitude geostrophic circulations are known to cause a net west-to-east equatorial thermal energy transfer, which drives hotspot offsets eastward. We find that a strong toroidal magnetic field can obstruct these energy transporting circulations. This results in winds aligning with the magnetic field and generates westward Lorentz force accelerations in hotspot regions, ultimately causing westward hotspot offsets. In the subsequent linear analysis we find that this reversal mechanism has an equatorial wave analogy in terms of the planetary scale equatorial magneto-Rossby waves. We compare our findings to three-dimensional MHD simulations, both quantitively and qualitatively, identifying the link between the mechanics of magnetically-driven hotspot and wind reversals. We use the developed theory to identify physically-motivated reversal criteria, which can be used to place constraints on the magnetic fields of ultra-hot Jupiters with observed westward hotspots., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Intermediate-mass main sequence stars have large radiative envelopes overlying convective cores. This configuration allows internal gravity waves (IGWs) generated at the convective-radiative interface to propagate towards the stellar surface. The signatures of these waves can be observed in the photometric and spectroscopic data from stars. We have studied the propagation of these IGWs using two-dimensional fully-non-linear hydrodynamical simulations with realistic stellar reference states from the one-dimensional stellar evolution code, Modules for Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). When a single wave is forced, we observe wave self-interaction. When two waves are forced, we observe non-linear interaction (i.e. triadic interaction) between these waves forming waves at different wavelengths and frequencies. When a spectrum of waves similar to that found in numerical simulations is forced, we find that the surface IGW frequency slope is consistent with recent observations. This power law is similar to that predicted by linear theory for the wave propagation, with small deviations which can be an effect of nonlinearities. When the same generation spectrum is applied to 3 solar mass models at different stellar rotation and ages, the surface IGW spectrum slope is very similar to the generation spectrum slope., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures

Context. Massive stars are predicted to excite internal gravity waves (IGWs) by turbulent core convection and from turbulent pressure fluctuations in their near-surface layers. These IGWs are extremely efficient at transporting angular momentum and chemical species within stellar interiors, but they remain largely unconstrained observationally. Aims. We aim to characterise the photometric detection of IGWs across a large number of O and early-B stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, and explain the ubiquitous detection of stochastic variability in the photospheres of massive stars. Methods. We combined high-precision time-series photometry from the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite with high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy of 70 stars with spectral types O and B to probe the relationship between the photometric signatures of IGWs and parameters such as spectroscopic mass, luminosity, and macroturbulence. Results. A relationship is found between the location of a star in the spectroscopic Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and the amplitudes and frequencies of stochastic photometric variability in the light curves of massive stars. Furthermore, the properties of the stochastic variability are statistically correlated with macroturbulent velocity broadening in the spectral lines of massive stars. Conclusions. The common ensemble morphology for the stochastic low-frequency variability detected in space photometry and its relationship to macroturbulence is strong evidence for IGWs in massive stars, since these types of waves are unique in providing the dominant tangential velocity field required to explain the observed spectroscopy., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 10 pages and 5 figures (and an additional 7 pages of appendix tables and figures). We present the first three-dimensional (3D), hydrodynamic simulations of the core convection zone (CZ) and extended radiative zone spanning from 1% to 90% of the stellar radius of an intermediate mass (3 $\mathrm{M}_\odot$) star. This allows us to self-consistently follow the generation of internal gravity waves (IGWs) at the convective boundary and their propagation to the surface. We find that convection in the core is dominated by plumes. The frequency spectrum in the CZ and that of IGW generation is a double power law as seen in previous two-dimensional (2D) simulations. The spectrum is significantly flatter than theoretical predictions using excitation through Reynolds stresses induced by convective eddies alone. It is compatible with excitation through plume penetration. An empirically determined distribution of plume frequencies generally matches the one necessary to explain a large part of the observed spectrum. We observe waves propagating in the radiation zone and excited standing modes, which can be identified as gravity and fundamental modes. They show similar frequencies and node patterns to those predicted by the stellar oscillation code GYRE. The continuous part of the spectrum fulfills the IGW dispersion relation. A spectrum of tangential velocity and temperature fluctuations close to the surface is extracted, which are directly related to observable brightness variations in stars. Westward winds have now been inferred for two hot Jupiters (HJs): HAT-P-7b and CoRoT-2b. Such observations could be the result of a number of physical phenomena such as cloud asymmetries, asynchronous rotation, or magnetic fields. For the hotter HJs magnetic fields are an obvious candidate, though the actual mechanism remains poorly understood. Here we show that a strong toroidal magnetic field causes the planetary-scale equatorial magneto-Kelvin wave to structurally shear as it travels, resulting in westward tilting eddies, which drive a reversal of the equatorial winds from their eastward hydrodynamic counterparts. Using our simplified model we estimate that the equatorial winds of HAT-P-7b would reverse for a planetary dipole field strength $B_{\text{dip},\text{HAT-P-7b}} \gtrsim 6 \, \mathrm{G} $, a result that is consistent with three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations and lies below typical surface dipole estimates of inflated HJs. The same analysis suggests the minimum dipole field strength required to reverse the winds of CoRoT-2b is $B_{\text{dip},\text{CoRoT-2b}} \gtrsim 3 \, \mathrm{kG}$, which considerably exceeds estimates of the maximum surface dipole strength for HJs. We hence conclude that our magnetic wave-driven mechanism provides an explanation for wind reversals on HAT-P-7b; however, other physical phenomena provide more plausible explanations for wind reversals on CoRoT-2b.

Internal gravity waves (IGW) propagate in the radiation zones of all stars. During propagation, their amplitudes are affected by two main features: radiative diffusion and density stratification. We have studied the implications of these two features on waves traveling within the radiative zones of non-rotating stars with stellar parameters obtained from the one dimensional stellar evolution code, MESA. As a simple measure of induced wave dynamics, we define a criterion to see if waves can become nonlinear and if so, under what conditions. This was done to understand the role IGW may play in angular momentum transport and mixing within stellar interiors. We find that the IGW generation spectrum, convective velocities and the strength of density stratification all play major roles in whether waves become nonlinear. With increasing stellar mass, there is an increasing trend in nonlinear wave energies. Early-type stars are predicted to excite an entire spectrum of internal gravity waves (IGWs) at the interface of their convective cores and radiative envelopes. Numerical simulations of IGWs predict stochastic low-frequency variability in photometric observations, yet the detection of IGWs in early-type stars has been limited by a dearth of high-quality photometric time series. We present observational evidence of stochastic low-frequency variability in the CoRoT photometry of a sample of O, B, A and F stars. Context. Main sequence stars with a convective core are predicted to stochastically excite Internal Gravity Waves (IGWs), which effectively transport angular momentum throughout the stellar interior and explain the observed near-uniform interior rotation rates of intermediate-mass stars. However, there are few detections of IGWs, and fewer still made using photometry, with more detections needed to constrain numerical simulations. Aims. We aim to formalise the detection and characterisation of IGWs in photometric observations of stars born with convective cores (M > 1.5 M$_{\odot}$) and parameterise the low-frequency power excess caused by IGWs. Methods. Using the most recent CoRoT light curves for a sample of O, B, A and F stars, we parameterise the morphology of the flux contribution of IGWs in Fourier space using an MCMC numerical scheme within a Bayesian framework. We compare this to predictions from IGW numerical simulations and investigate how the observed morphology changes as a function of stellar parameters. Results. We demonstrate that a common morphology for the low-frequency power excess is observed in early-type stars observed by CoRoT. Our study shows that a background frequency-dependent source of astrophysical signal is common, which we interpret as IGWs. We provide constraints on the amplitudes of IGWs and the shape of their detected frequency spectrum across a range of mass, which is the first ensemble study of stochastic variability in such a diverse sample of stars. Conclusions. The evidence of a low-frequency power excess across a wide mass range supports the interpretation of IGWs in photometry of O, B, A and F stars. The evolution of stars born with a convective core is highly dependent on the efficiency and extent of near core mixing processes, which effectively increases both the core mass and main-sequence lifetime. We investigate to what extent gravity-mode period spacings in slowly pulsating B-type stars observed by the Kepler mission can be used to constrain both the shape and extent of convective core overshoot and additional mixing in the radiative envelope. We compute grids of 1D stellar structure and evolution models for two different shapes of convective core overshooting and three shapes of radiative envelope mixing. The models in these grids are compared to a set of benchmark models to evaluate their capability of mimicking the dipole prograde g-modes of the benchmark models. Through our model comparisons we find that at a central hydrogen content of Xc = 0.5, dipole prograde g-modes in the period range 0.8-3 d are capable of differentiating between step and exponential diffusive overshooting. This ability disappears towards the terminal age main-sequence at Xc = 0.1. Furthermore, the g-modes behave the same for the three different shapes of radiative envelope mixing considered. However, a constant envelope mixing requires a diffusion coefficient near the convective core five times higher than chemical mixing from internal gravity waves to obtain a surface nitrogen excess of about 0.5 dex within the main-sequence lifetime. Within estimated frequency errors of the Kepler mission, the ability of g-modes to distinguish between step and exponential diffusive overshooting depends on the evolutionary stage. Detailed modeling of stellar evolution requires a better understanding of the (magneto-)hydrodynamic processes which mix chemical elements and transport angular momentum. Understanding these pro- cesses is crucial if we are to accurately interpret observations of chemical abundance anomalies, surface rotation measurements and asteroseismic data. Here, we use two-dimensional hydrodynamic simula- tions of the generation and propagation of internal gravity waves (IGW) in an intermediate mass star to measure the chemical mixing induced by these waves. We show that such mixing can generally be treated as a diffusive process. We then show that the local diffusion coefficient does not depend on the local fluid velocity, but rather on the wave amplitude. We then use these findings to provide a simple parametrization for this diffusion which can be incorporated into stellar evolution codes and tested against observations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted at ApJL

Observations of infrared and optical light curves of hot Jupiters have demonstrated that the peak brightness is generally offset eastward from the substellar point [1,2]. This observation is consistent with hydrodynamic numerical simulations that produce fast, eastward directed winds which advect the hottest point in the atmosphere eastward of the substellar point [3,4]. However, recent continuous Kepler measurements of HAT-P-7 b show that its peak brightness offset varies significantly in time, with excursions such that the brightest point is sometimes westward of the substellar point [5]. These variations in brightness offset require wind variability, with or without the presence of clouds. While such wind variability has not been seen in hydrodynamic simulations of hot Jupiter atmospheres, it has been seen in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations [6]. Here we show that MHD simulations of HAT-P-7 b indeed display variable winds and corresponding variability in the position of the hottest point in the atmosphere. Assuming the observed variability in HAT-P-7 b is due to magnetism we constrain its minimum magnetic field strength to be 6\,G. Similar observations of wind variability on hot giant exoplanets, or lack thereof, could help constrain their magnetic field strengths. Hot Jupiters have proven themselves to be a rich class of exoplanets which test our theories of planetary evolution and atmospheric dynamics under extreme conditions. Here, we present three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations and analytic results which demonstrate that a dynamo can be maintained in the thin, stably-stratified atmosphere of a hot Jupiter, independent of the presumed deep-seated dynamo. This dynamo is maintained by conductivity variations arising from strong asymmetric heating from the planets' host star. The presence of a dynamo significantly increases the surface magnetic field strength and alters the overall planetary magnetic field geometry, possibly affecting star-planet magnetic interactions., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJL

Stellar evolution models are most uncertain for evolved massive stars. Asteroseismology based on high-precision uninterrupted space photometry has become a new way to test the outcome of stellar evolution theory and was recently applied to a multitude of stars, but not yet to massive evolved supergiants.Our aim is to detect, analyse and interpret the photospheric and wind variability of the O9.5Iab star HD 188209 from Kepler space photometry and long-term high-resolution spectroscopy. We used Kepler scattered-light photometry obtained by the nominal mission during 1460d to deduce the photometric variability of this O-type supergiant. In addition, we assembled and analysed high-resolution high signal-to-noise spectroscopy taken with four spectrographs during some 1800d to interpret the temporal spectroscopic variability of the star. The variability of this blue supergiant derived from the scattered-light space photometry is in full in agreement with the one found in the ground-based spectroscopy. We find significant low-frequency variability that is consistently detected in all spectral lines of HD 188209. The photospheric variability propagates into the wind, where it has similar frequencies but slightly higher amplitudes. The morphology of the frequency spectra derived from the long-term photometry and spectroscopy points towards a spectrum of travelling waves with frequency values in the range expected for an evolved O-type star. To date, asteroseismology has provided core to surface differential rotation measurements in eight main-sequence stars. These stars, ranging in mass from $\sim$1.5-9$M_\odot$, show rotation profiles ranging from uniform to counter-rotation. Although they have a variety of masses, these stars all have convective cores and overlying radiative regions, conducive to angular momentum transport by internal gravity waves (IGW). Using two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations we show that angular momentum transport by IGW can explain all of these rotation profiles. We further predict that should high mass, faster rotating stars be observed, the core to envelope differential rotation will be positive, but less than one., Comment: 5 pages, Accepted at ApJL

We demonstrate observational evidence for the occurrence of convectively driven internal gravity waves (IGW) in young massive O-type stars observed with high-precision CoRoT space photometry. This evidence results from a comparison between velocity spectra based on 2D hydrodynamical simulations of IGW in a differentially-rotating massive star and the observed spectra.We also show that the velocity spectra caused by IGW may lead to detectable line-profile variability and explain the occurrence of macroturbulence in the observed line profiles of OB stars. We present the first three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the atmosphere of HD 209458b which self-consistently include reduction of winds due to the Lorentz force and Ohmic heating. We find overall wind structures similar to that seen in previous models of hot Jupiter atmospheres, with strong equatorial jets and meridional flows poleward near the day side and equatorward near the night side. Inclusion of magnetic fields slows those winds and leads to Ohmic dissipation. We find wind slowing ranging from 10%-40% for reasonable field strengths. We find Ohmic dissipation rates ~10^17 W at 100 bar, orders of magnitude too small to explain the inflated radius of this planet. Faster wind speeds, not achievable in these anelastic calculations, may be able to increase this value somewhat, but likely will not be able to close the gap necessary to explain the inflated radius. We demonstrate that the discrepancy between the simulations presented here and previous models is due to inadequate treatment of magnetic field geometry and evolution. We present numerical simulations of internal gravity waves (IGW) in a star with a convective core and extended radiative envelope. We report on amplitudes, spectra, dissipation and consequent angular momentum transport by such waves. We find that these waves are generated efficiently and transport angular momentum on short timescales over large distances. We show that, as in the Earth's atmosphere, IGW drive equatorial flows which change magnitude and direction on short timescales. These results have profound consequences for the observational inferences of massive stars, as well as their long term angular momentum evolution. We suggest IGW angular momentum transport may explain many observational mysteries, such as: the misalignment of hot Jupiters around hot stars, the Be class of stars, Ni enrichment anomalies in massive stars and the non-synchronous orbits of interacting binaries., Comment: Accepted at ApJ, 30 pages, 15 figures

We investigate tidal dissipation of obliquity in hot Jupiters. Assuming an initial random orientation of obliquity and parameters relevant to the observed population, the obliquity of hot Jupiters does not evolve to purely aligned systems. In fact, the obliquity evolves to either prograde, retrograde or 90^{o} orbits where the torque due to tidal perturbations vanishes. This distribution is incompatible with observations which show that hot jupiters around cool stars are generally aligned. This calls into question the viability of tidal dissipation as the mechanism for obliquity alignment of hot Jupiters around cool stars., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted at ApJL

We propose that the observed misalignment between extra-solar planets and their hot host stars can be explained by angular momentum transport within the host star. Observations have shown that this misalignment is preferentially around hot stars, which have convective cores and extended radiative envelopes. This situation is amenable to substantial angular momentum transport by internal gravity waves (IGW) generated at the convective-radiative interface. Here we present numerical simulations of this process and show that IGW can modulate the surface rotation of the star. With these two- dimensional simulations we show that IGW could explain the retrograde orbits observed in systems such as HAT-P-6 and HAT-P-7, however, extension to high obliquity objects will await future three- dimensional simulations. We present axisymmetric numerical simulations of the solar interior, including the convection zone and an extended radiative interior. We find that differential rotation in the convection zone induces a toroidal field from an initially purely poloidal field. This toroidal field becomes unstable to the axisymmetric Tayler instability and undergoes equatorward propagating toroidal field reversals. These reversals occur in the absence of a dynamo and without accompanying poloidal field reversals. The nature and presence of such reversals depends sensitively on the initial poloidal field strength imposed, with north-south symmetric reversals only seen at a particular initial field strength. Coupled with a dynamo mechanism which regenerates the poloidal field this could be one ingredient in the sunspot cycle., Comment: accepted at ApJ

We present axisymmetric simulations of the coupled convective and radiative regions in the Sun in order to investigate the angular momentum evolution of the radiative interior. Both hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic models were run. We find an initial rapid adjustment in which the dif- ferential rotation of the convection zone viscously spreads into the radiative interior, thus forming a "tachocline". In polar regions the subsequent spread of the tachocline is halted by a counter-rotating meridional circulation cell which develops in the tachocline. Near the equator such a counter-rotating cell is more intermittent and the tachocline penetration depth continues to increase, albeit more slowly than previously predicted. In the magnetic models we impose a dipolar field initially confined to the radiative interior. The behavior of the magnetic models is very similar to their non-magnetic counter- parts. Despite being connected to the convection zone, very little angular momentum is transferred between the convective and radiative regions. Therefore, while it appears that a magnetic field is not necessary to stop the tachocline spread, it also does not promote such a spread if connected to the convection zone., Comment: In press at ApJ. 20 pages, 12 figures. Internal gravity waves excited by overshoot at the bottom of the convection zone can be influenced by rotation and by the strong toroidal magnetic field that is likely to be present in the solar tachocline. Using a simple Cartesian model, we show how waves with a vertical component of propagation can be reflected when traveling through a layer containing a horizontal magnetic field with a strength that varies with depth. This interaction can prevent a portion of the downward-traveling wave energy flux from reaching the deep solar interior. If a highly reflecting magnetized layer is located some distance below the convection zone base, a duct or wave guide can be set up, wherein vertical propagation is restricted by successive reflections at the upper and lower boundaries. The presence of both upward- and downward-traveling disturbances inside the duct leads to the existence of a set of horizontally propagating modes that have significantly enhanced amplitudes. We point out that the helical structure of these waves makes them capable of generating an alpha-effect, and briefly consider the possibility that propagation in a shear of sufficient strength could lead to instability, the result of wave growth due to over-reflection., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures. We present results from numerical simulations of the interaction of internal gravity waves (IGW) with magnetic fields in the radiative interior of the Sun. In this second paper, the waves are forced self-consistently by an overlying convection zone and a toroidal magnetic field is imposed in the stably stratified layer just underneath convection zone. Consistent with the results of previous analytic and simple numerical calculations, we find a strong wave-field interaction, in which waves are reflected in the field region. The wave-field interaction and wave reflection depend on the field strength as well as adopted values of the diffusivities. In some cases wave reflection leads to an increased mean flow in the field region. In addition to reproducing some of the features of our simpler models, we find additional complex behaviour in these more complete and realistic calculations., Comment: accepted at MNRAS, 16 figures

We present results of nonlinear numerical simulations of gravity wave driven shear flow oscillations in the equatorial plane of the solar radiative interior. These results show that many of the assumptions of quasi-linear theory are not valid. When only two waves are forced (prograde and retrograde) oscillatory mean flow is maintained; but critical layers often form and are dynamically important. When a spectrum of waves is forced, the non-linear wave-wave interactions are dynamically important, often acting to decrease the maintenance of a mean flow.
