A significant challenge on an exascale computer is the speed at which we compute results exceeds by many orders of magnitude the speed at which we save these results. Therefore the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) ALPINE project focuses on providing exascale-ready visualization solutions including in situ processing. In situ visualization and analysis runs as the simulation is run, on simulations results are they are generated avoiding the need to save entire simulations to storage for later analysis. The ALPINE project made post hoc visualization tools, ParaView and VisIt, exascale ready and developed in situ algorithms and infrastructures. The suite of ALPINE algorithms developed under ECP includes novel approaches to enable automated data analysis and visualization to focus on the most important aspects of the simulation. Many of the algorithms also provide data reduction benefits to meet the I/O challenges at exascale. ALPINE developed a new lightweight in situ infrastructure, Ascent.

The term “in situ processing” has evolved over the last decade to mean both a specific strategy for visualizing and analyzing data and an umbrella term for a processing paradigm. The resulting confusion makes it difficult for visualization and analysis scientists to communicate with each other and with their stakeholders. To address this problem, a group of over 50 experts convened with the goal of standardizing terminology. This paper summarizes their findings and proposes a new terminology for describing in situ systems. An important finding from this group was that in situ systems are best described via multiple, distinct axes: integration type, proximity, access, division of execution, operation controls, and output type. This paper discusses these axes, evaluates existing systems within the axes, and explores how currently used terms relate to the axes.

Huge salt formations, trapping large untapped oil and gas reservoirs, lie in the deepwater region of the Gulf of Mexico. Drilling in this region is high-risk and drilling failures have led to well abandonments, with each costing tens of millions of dollars. Salt tectonics plays a central role in these failures. To explore the geomechanical interactions between salt and the surrounding sand and shale formations, scientists have simulated the stresses in and around salt diapirs in the Gulf of Mexico using nonlinear finite element geomechanical modeling. In this paper, we describe novel techniques developed to visualize the simulated subsurface stress field. We present an adaptation of the Mohr diagram, a traditional paper-and-pencil graphical method long used by the material mechanics community for estimating coordinate transformations for stress tensors, as a new tensor glyph for dynamically exploring tensor variables within three-dimensional finite element models. 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (NADPH) was solubilized with polyoxyethylene ether (Brij) W-1 from a heavy-membrane fraction, sedimented at 16000 x g from a cell-free homogenate of four-day-old, dark-grown radish seedlings (Raphanus sativus L.). Approximately 350-fold purification of the solubilized enzyme activity was achieved by (NH4)2SO4 precipitation followed by column chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A-50, blue-dextran-agarose and HMG-CoA-hexane-agarose. The presence of detergent, which was required at all times to maintain activity, did not interface with the chromatographic procedures used. Sucrose density centrifugation suggested an apparent molecular mass of 180 kDa with subunits of 45 kDa (polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecylsulphate). The enzyme was stable at 67.5°C for 30 min in the presence of glycerol, dithioerythritol and detergent. Studies of enzyme stability an activation indicate that the enzyme is hydrophobic protein with free thiol groups that are essential for full activity. The activation energy was estimated to be 92 kJ (Arrhenius plot). Antibodies raised against rat liver and yeast hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase failed to bind or inactivate the radish enzyme. When both HMG-CoA and NADPH concentrations were varied, intersecting patterns were obtained with double-reciprocal plots. The apparent Km values determined in this way are 1.5 µM [(S)-HMG-CoA], and 27 µM (NADPH). Concentrations of NADPH greater than 150 µM caused substrate inhibition at low HMG-CoA concentrations resulting in deviations from linearity in secondary plots. Analysis of these data and the product inhibition pattern suggest a sequential mechanism for the reduction of HMG-CoA to mevalonic acid with HMG-CoA being the first substrate binding to the enzyme, followed by NADPH.
