Abstract

Standardizing terminology to annotate electrophysiological events can improve both computational research and clinical care. Sharing data enriched with standard terms can facilitate data exploration, from case studies to mega-analyses. The machine readability of such electrophysiological event annotations is essential for performing analyses efficiently across software tools and packages. Hierarchical Event Descriptors (HED) provide a framework for describing events in neuroscience experiments. HED library schemas extend the standard HED schema vocabulary to include specialized vocabularies, such as standardized clinical terms for electrophysiological events. The Standardized Computer-based Organized Reporting of EEG (SCORE) defines terms for annotating EEG events, including artifacts. This study developed a HED library schema for SCORE, making the terms machine-readable. We demonstrate that the HED-SCORE library schema can be used to annotate events in EEG data stored in the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS). Abstract

The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is a community-driven standard for the organization of data and metadata from a growing range of neuroscience modalities. This paper is meant as a history of how the standard has developed and grown over time. We outline the principles behind the project, the mechanisms by which it has been extended, and some of the challenges being addressed as it evolves. We also discuss the lessons learned through the project, with the aim of enabling researchers in other domains to learn from the success of BIDS.

Abstract

In this co-written article creative practice researchers Christine Rogers (CR) and Liz Burke (LB) explicate their reasons for, processes, and outcomes of filming animals. Christine filmed the wild foxes who inhabited her Belfast garden. She set up a wildlife camera, gaining an up-close encounter with these shy strangers, and hoping through this, to create a sense of belonging for herself, a stranger to Northern Ireland. Liz filmed her two whippets, Agnes and then Zelda, to uncover the mysterious connections in the deep relationships between herself and her dogs. Both understand the ethical dilemmas of such filming and seek to make sense of this. Both adhere to Donna Haraway's call to enter into a complex dance with the other. Christine cedes control of the shooting and with her decolonising ethos she explores the tricky idea of reciprocity. Liz chooses to cede control in the editing as she works with a complexity-generating programme Korsakow. For Christine, belonging is created, and it becomes clear that she must remain a stranger to the foxes, no matter her desire for an intimate connection. Her desire for reciprocity also remains unmet. 16. Implementation of a Student-Customized Integrated Upper-Level Chemistry Laboratory Course

Abstract

The implementation of an integrated approach to upper-level undergraduate chemistry laboratory instruction that incorporates student choice both in the selection and sequencing of the experimental work is presented. The approach involves combining laboratory work in several traditional subdisciplinary areas of chemistry in a single course. Experimental work in emerging areas of chemistry is also incorporated, as are experiences intended to capture an interdisciplinary approach. Logistical affordances, the nature of the resulting learning environment, student responses, and faculty experiences are explored through analysis of curriculum documents and the use of student surveys. The work reveals several strengths and weaknesses in terms of logistics and learning environment, insights into how students engaged with the course and the aspect of choice, and associated benefits and challenges for faculty members. Implications for practice are presented with the aim of informing educators and institutions considering or adopting a similar approach.

Abstract

We present an extension to the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) for motion data. Motion data is frequently recorded alongside human brain imaging and electrophysiological data. The goal of Motion-BIDS is to make motion data interoperable across different laboratories and with other data modalities in human brain and behavioral research. To this end, Motion-BIDS standardizes the data format and metadata structure. It describes how to document experimental details, considering the diversity of hardware and software systems for motion data. Abstract

Objective: The impact of acquiring hearing loss might be exacerbated during adolescence, as this normal transition from childhood to adulthood is characterised by identity construction and social intensity. This study aimed to describe the lived experiences of South African adolescents with acquired hearing loss following aminoglycoside treatment for multidrug resistant tuberculosis. Design: The study adopted a descriptive phenomenological design and indepth, semi-structured interviews were conducted in English, isiZulu and Afrikaans. The data was managed and analysed according to a modified version of Hycner's framework. Study sample: Six participants aged 16-24 years with bilateral, mild to profound hearing loss acquired from aminoglycoside treatment were recruited from two South African provinces. Results: Three themes emerged which created a triple burden for participants. They endured socio-economic hardship encompassing limited economic and emotional support. Participants battled the consequences of life-threatening MDR-TB including illness, hospitalisation, stigma, and other challenges. Finally, participants were left with life-changing hearing loss. Conclusion: The findings indicate the necessity of holistic management of adolescents with aminoglycoside-related acquired hearing loss and serves as motivation to improve ototoxic monitoring practices and patient uptake of monitoring services and calls for the cessation, or at least cautious use, of aminoglycosides. Abstract

The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is a community-driven standard for the organization of data and metadata from a growing range of neuroscience modalities. This paper is meant as a history of how the standard has developed and grown over time. We outline the principles behind the project, the mechanisms by which it has been extended, and some of the challenges being addressed as it evolves. We also discuss the lessons learned through the project, with the aim of enabling researchers in other domains to learn from the success of BIDS.

40. Listening to the Community: Guidance from Native Community Members for Emerging Culturally Responsive Educators

Abstract

Critical race theory (CRT) emphasizes the importance of listening to the counter-narratives of people from marginalized groups. However, the applicability of CRT in practical settings often remains unclear for educators and scholars. This project offers not only a place for Native community members to share their experiences and ideas, it also provides practical guidance for emerging culturally responsive educators and ways to use themes from narratives to guide future scholarship. As a result of interviews with five Native community members, three themes emerged for non-Native educators working in Native communities: (a) learning from the community, (b) transforming thinking through discomfort, and (c) gaining awareness of positive values. These themes can be used to guide future projects, including reservation-based field experiences and research projects exploring educator thinking in reservation communities. (Contains 1 note.)

41. Confronting Coyote: Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in an Era of Standardization

Abstract

The trickster, a crucial character in many cultural histories, often slips into people's lives without warning. In the western United States, the trickster frequently manifests himself as Coyote, and he is central in the oral traditions of tribal people, ranching families, and outdoor adventurers alike. Coyote is a complex character that teaches and teases: One moment he shares painful lessons with people and the next he makes them laugh at their ridiculous flaws. In today's world of educational standardization, Coyote the Trickster lurks in the shadows of every classroom. He has crept among the masses in schools under the guise of a democratic model of education. He is so cunning that many educators actually ponder his suggestions associated with No Child Left Behind, despite their simultaneous suspicion of his promises. Sometimes Coyote's claims are alluring: If educators offer the same opportunities--through the same curriculum, instruction, and assessment--it seems they are promoting equity in the classroom. Despite the bitter taste of it all, Coyote presents an enticing case. In this article, the author shares her own classroom experience of the Coyote's trick. Furthermore, she discusses how tension between standardized education and teaching for social justice can be addressed by considering three instrumental components of responsive education: (1) confidence in student potential; (2) visibility in the school and community; and (3) professional empowerment.

Abstract

Importance: Guidance is limited for training protocols that support stakeholders who are new to participating in telerehabilitation interventions using videoconferencing software. Objective: To explore stakeholders' experiences participating in a group-based intervention during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using a videoconferencing software (Zoom). Design: Ad hoc exploratory thematic analysis. Setting: Community-based telerehabilitation. Participants: Stakeholders included group members (n = 8) who were low-income adults with chronic stroke (≥3 mo) and mild to moderate disability (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale ≤ 16), group leaders (n = 4), and study staff (n = 4). Intervention: Group-based intervention, ENGAGE, delivered using videoconferencing technology. ENGAGE blends social learning and guided discovery to facilitate community and social participation. Outcomes and Measures: Semistructured interviews. Results: Stakeholders included group members (ages 26–81 yr), group leaders (ages 32–71 yr), and study staff (ages 23–55 yr). Group members characterized ENGAGE as learning, doing, and connecting with others who shared their experience. Stakeholders identified social advantages and disadvantages to the videoconferencing environment. Attitudes toward technology, past technology experiences, the amount of time allotted for training, group size, physical environments, navigation of technology disruptions, and design of the intervention workbook were facilitators for some and barriers for others. Social support facilitated technology access and intervention engagement. Stakeholders recommended training structure and content. Conclusions and Relevance: Tailored training protocols may support stakeholders who are participating in telerehabilitation interventions using new software or devices. Future studies that identify specific tailoring variables will advance the development of telerehabilitation training protocols. What This Article Adds: These findings provide stakeholder-identified barriers and facilitators, in addition to stakeholder-informed recommendations, for technology training protocols that may support uptake of telerehabilitation in occupational therapy. 49. Older Adults’ Experience of an Exergaming Intervention to Improve Balance and Prevent Falls: A Nested Explanatory Qualitative Study

Abstract

Falls are frequent and life-changing events for older adults worldwide. The ageing phenomenon has arrived in developing countries, which experience tensions between curative and rehabilitative services, combined with an increase in non-communicable diseases. Policies addressing issues of ageing have been poorly implemented, and there are few fall prevention initiatives. Compelling evidence from the Global North supports exercise-based interventions to improve balance and reduce fall risk in older adults. More recently, attention has focused on interactive videogaming, known as exergames, as a novel way to manage fall risk with exercise. Commercially available exergames have inherent appeal for low- and middle-income country contexts, where rehabilitation professionals and resources are scanty. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of a large-scale randomized control trial comparing an exergaming intervention with the gold-standard Otago Exercise Programme and a no-intervention arm. Exercise adherence was poor in both intervention arms, and this prompted a shift to mixed methodology to explore the construct of falls and participants’ experience of the exergaming intervention. Focus groups were conducted, and the results were analysed using content analysis. Whereas the results demonstrated improvements in physical outcome measures (e.g., Timed-Up-and-Go, MiniBESTest) related to balance and falls that were encouraging in both the gold-standard and exergaming intervention groups, few participants achieved optimal adherence. Attitudes toward falls and fall prevention were explored, as well as participants’ experiences of the exergaming programme. Consistent with a developing country context, participants acknowledged both intrinsic and extrinsic fall risk factors. Exergaming participants enjoyed the fun and playful aspects of the exercise programme, yet these were not sufficient to maximize adherence. The focus groups described the barriers and facilitators to participation, which included motivation. The focus groups discussed strategies to enhance participation, and these are discussed in the context of exergaming.
