High-throughput experimentation (HTE) has the potential to improve our understanding of organic chemistry by systematically interrogating reactivity across diverse chemical spaces. Notable bottlenecks include few publicly available large-scale datasets and the need for facile interpretation of these data's hidden chemical insights. Herein we report the development of a High Throughput Experimentation Analyzer (HiTEA), a robust and statistically rigorous framework which is applicable to any HTE dataset regardless of size, scope, or target reaction outcome. We improve the HTE data landscape with the disclosure of 47,000 + previously proprietary HTE reactions. HiTEA is validated on this dataset, showcasing the elucidation of hidden relationships between reaction components and outcomes as well as highlighting reaction space that necessitates further investigation.

This article was not intended to be a complete report of a standard clinical trial. It is a report of the outcomes of preliminary data for validation of the CMECD procedure (Coletti Method of EMG ChemoDenervation) protocol for the treatment of chronic pain resulting from chronic muscle spasm. Methods are here detailed on how to approach the patient with chronic pain, identify the presence of chronic muscle spasm, undertake the treatment protocol and how to perform the follow up process to confirm that chronic pain secondary to chronic muscle spasm was the accurate diagnosis. Furthermore, this article presents the results of a cohort of more than 90 patients treated by the CMECD procedure regarding location and duration of prior pain, prior treatment strategies, degree of success in resolving pain and duration of relief. Outcome data consisting of patient and staff reporting of specific situations in which the chronic pain treatment was successful has been included to help establish the “believability” of outcome successes and to elucidate the potential life altering effects of successful treatment of chronic pain secondary to chronic muscle spasm. This article will hopefully increase the interest in this treatment protocol and increase the chance that a classical international clinical trial will be undertaken.

The atmospheric CO2 is now at the highest level seen (400 ppm) and the construction sector is responsible for 36 % of all greenhouse gases. One way to reduce this negative impact is to use more sustainable and environmentally friendly materials such as timber in the construction. To direct the sector towards this goal, the Erasmus+ project HiTimber (“Sustainable High-Rise Buildings Designed and Constructed in Timber”) was initiated in 2017. With the objective of developing an international and trans-disciplinary course in design, construction and management of sustainable high-rise timber buildings, project-based learning (PBL) was applied. The aim of the paper is to examine the effects of the PBL by examples and results from the HiTimber workshops. The presented results are the approbation of scientifically-practical results, derived from surveys conducted in 2018 and 2019 where 29 teachers and 45 students evaluated the PBL-based workshops. In general, all teachers and 85 % of students were satisfied with the PBL approach; the students were more engaged, motivated and successful in their studies. However, the transition from traditional teaching to PBL has its challenges and requires time, effort and strong commitment from both students and teachers to be effective.

Russian interest in the High North is not centred on its supposedly vast natural resources, which have been exaggerated and overhyped. Much more important are the strategic implications of climate change in the region. As regional ice retreats, a new frontline is emerging with which Kremlin strategists must contend. Potentially it will bring important new benefits to Russia, such as the logistical ability to move resources from east to west much more easily than before, but it will also open a gateway through which a hypothetical aggressor could attack the Russian mainland. The outside world needs to recognise these strategic implications of climate change and find ways of reassuring Russia.

The ferroelectric–to–ferroelectic phase transformation between the high temperature (FERH) and the low temperature (FERL) rhomobohedral phases in lead based perovskite under the dc bias conditions was investigated. Dielectric measurements show that an external electric field stabilizes the FERL phase and moves the phase transformation to a higher temperature. The observation has been further verified by an in situ microfocused x-ray study where an external field can effectively induce the oxygen octahedral tilting in the crystalline lattice and extends the thermal stability region of the FERL phase to a higher temperature. An analysis based on the combination of the Clausius–Clapeyron relationship with lattice dynamic principles suggests that the transformation from FERH to FERL is driven by a short-range interaction in the crystalline lattice. The article describes and analyses the discourse among planners and economists conceming policies for eliminating job security in China's industrial sector. The discourse is set in the context of the continuing crises of unemployment and job placement that have marked the widening of the reforms in China's urban areas. The effect of the dominant role of market-oriented, reductionist economic theory in policy discussions is shown to be that of blinding reformers to any alternatives to the “lazy, redundant worker” explanations for low labor productivity. The article ends with some exploration of worker responses to the campaign to eliminate job security.

The impacts of small niobium additions to processing, microstructure, and electrical properties in the Zr-rich lead zirconate titanate ceramics (PZT 95/5) were investigated. The influence of niobium content on dielectricresponses and the characteristics of ferroelectric behaviors, as well as the relative phase stability and the hydrostatic pressure induced ferroelectric-to-antiferroelectric phase transformation are reported. Results indicate that increasing the niobium concentration in the solid solutions enhances densification, refines the microstructure, decreases dielectric constant and spontaneous polarization, and stabilizes the ferroelectric phase. The stabilization of ferroelectric phase with respect to the antiferroelectric phase near PZT 95/5 composition dramatically increases the pressure required for the ferroelectric-to-antiferroelectric phase transformation. These observations were correlated to the creation of A-site vacancies and a slight modification of the crystal structure. The importance of these composition-property relationships on device application will be presented.

The largest single-user container terminal in North America was recently constructed on Pier 400 at the Port of Los Angeles. The terminal's 2,250-meter long wharf is supported by about 3,700 24-inch octagonal precast, prestressed concrete piles. The piles are about 35-meters long and were driven through between 3 and 16 meters of rock dike. A total of 55 piles were monitored during two indicator pile-driving programs to develop the appropriate pile driving criteria to obtain the required axial pile capacity. The pile driving indicator programs include: (1) data from two different size diesel hammers and one hydraulic hammer; (2) comparison of piles driven dry versus those driven with jetting; and (3) restrike data after several days, several weeks, and several months. The results of the indicator pile programs provide the opportunity to better appreciate: (1) the impacts on capacity and schedule, when the piles are jetted; (2) the validity of using short-term restrikes to evaluate the ultimate long-term capacity of the piles; and (3) the potential economic, schedule, and quality control advantages that can be obtained when a hydraulic hammer is used.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is one of the most heavily traveled bridges in the world. The east span of the bridge will be replaced due to seismic safety concerns. The new bridge will be founded most on large 1.8 to 2.5-meter diameter, approximately 60- to 100-meter long pile foundations. Pile foundations will experience tension loads of up to approximately up to 90 MN and compression loads of up to approximately up to 140 MN during the design earthquake.
