Search

The finite volume algorithm for absorption correction developed by Wunch and Prewitt is examined. This algorithm is based on the numerical integration of the transmission function where three-dimensional quadratic surfaces define the sample boundaries. The algorithm can also calculate the mean path length required for second-extinction calculations. We apply this method to the neutron inelastic scattering measurements of CeRhIn$_{5}$ using the Multi-Axis Crystal Spectrometer (MACS) at NIST. The algorithm has been expanded to correct the absorption of multiple coaligned samples. We show that this procedure can account for the angular-dependent absorption, and the technique can be used to correct data and plan experiments., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

Competing interactions in frustrated magnets can give rise to highly degenerate ground states from which correlated liquid-like states of matter often emerge. The scaling of this degeneracy influences the ultimate ground state, with extensive degeneracies potentially yielding quantum spin liquids, while sub-extensive or smaller degeneracies yield static orders. A longstanding problem is to understand how ordered states precipitate from this degenerate manifold and what echoes of the degeneracy survive ordering. Here, we use neutron scattering to experimentally demonstrate a new "nodal line" spin liquid, where spins collectively fluctuate within a sub-extensive manifold spanning one-dimensional lines in reciprocal space. Realized in the spin-orbit coupled, face-centered cubic iridate K$_2$IrCl$_6$, we show that the sub-extensive degeneracy is robust, but remains susceptible to fluctuations or longer range interactions which cooperate to select a magnetic order at low temperatures. Proximity to the nodal line spin liquid influences the ordered state, enhancing the effects of quantum fluctuations and stabilizing it through the opening of a large spin-wave gap. Our results demonstrate quantum fluctuations can act counter-intuitively in frustrated materials: instead of destabilizing ordering, at the brink of the nodal spin liquid they can act to stabilize it and dictate its low-energy physics., Comment: Main article: 9 pages, 3 figures. In metal-organic-framework (MOF) perovskites, both magnetic and ferroelectric orderings can be readily realized by compounding spin and charge degrees of freedom. The hydrogen bonds that bridge the magnetic framework and organic molecules have long been thought of as a key in generating multiferroic properties. However, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we combine neutron diffraction, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and THz spectroscopy techniques to thoroughly investigate the dynamical properties of the multiferroic MOF candidate [CH$_3$NH$_3$][Co(HCOO)$_3$] through its multiple phase transitions. The wide range of energy resolutions reachable by these techniques enables us to scrutinize the coupling between the molecules and the framework throughout the phase transitions and interrogate a possible magnetoelectric coupling. Our results also reveal a structural change around 220 K which may be associated with the activation of a nodding donkey mode of the methylammonium molecule due to the ordering of the CH$_3$ groups. Upon the occurrence of the modulated phase transition around 130 K, the methylammonium molecules undergo a freezing of its reorientational motions which is concomitant with a change of the lattice parameters and anomalies of collective lattice vibrations. No significant change has been however observed in the lattice dynamics around the magnetic ordering, which therefore indicates the absence of a substantial magneto-electric coupling in zero-field.

We report high-resolution single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. This material is formed from layers of four-site \cupola" structures, oriented alternately upwards and downwards, which constitute a rather special realization of two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice magnetism. The strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction within each cupola, or plaquette, unit has a geometry largely unexplored among the numerous studies of magnetic properties in 2D Heisenberg models with spin and spatial anisotropies. We have measured the magnetic excitations at zero field and in fields up to 5 T, finding a complex mode structure with multiple characteristic features that allow us to extract all the relevant magnetic interactions by modelling within the linear spin-wave approximation. We demonstrate that Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is a checkerboard system with almost equal intra- and inter-plaquette couplings, in which the intra-plaquette DM interaction is instrumental both in enforcing robust magnetic order and in opening a large gap at the Brillouin-zone center. We place our observations in the perspective of generalized phase diagrams for spin-1/2 square-lattice models and materials, where exploring anisotropies and frustration as routes to quantum disorder remains a frontier research problem., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Van-der-Waals (vdW) ferromagnets have enabled the development of heterostructures assembled from exfoliated monolayers with spintronics functionalities, making it important to understand and ultimately tune their magnetic properties at the microscopic level. Information about the magnetic properties of these systems comes so far largely from macroscopic techniques, with little being known about the microscopic magnetic properties. Here, we combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and quasi-particle interference imaging with neutron scattering to establish the magnetic and electronic properties of the metallic vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2. By imaging domain walls at the atomic scale, we can relate the domain wall width to the exchange interaction and magnetic anisotropy extracted from the magnon dispersion as measured in inelastic neutron scattering, with excellent agreement between the two techniques. From comparison with Density Functional Theory calculations we can assign the quasi-particle interference to be dominated by spin-majority bands. We find a dimensional dichotomy of the bands at the Fermi energy: bands of minority character are predominantly two-dimensional in character, whereas the bands of majority character are three-dimensional. The transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice is expected to host an intermediate finite-temperature Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase through a mapping of the spins on each triangular unit to a complex order parameter. TmMgGaO$_4$ is a candidate material to realize such physics due to the non-Kramers nature of Tm$^{3+}$ ion and the resulting two-singlet single-ion ground state. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we confirm this picture by determining the leading parameters of the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of TmMgGaO$_4$. Subsequently, we track the predicted KT phase and related transitions by inspecting the field and temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility. We further probe the spin correlations in both reciprocal space and real space via single crystal neutron diffraction and magnetic total scattering techniques, respectively. Magnetic pair distribution function analysis provides evidence for the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs that characterize the proposed KT phase around 5~K. Although structural disorder influences the field-induced behavior of TmMgGaO$_4$, the magnetism in zero field appears relatively free from these effects. These results position TmMgGaO$_4$ as a strong candidate for a solid-state realization of KT physics in a dense spin system.

When charged particles in periodic lattices are subjected to a constant electric field, they respond by oscillating. Here we demonstrate that the magnetic analogue of these Bloch oscillations are realised in a one-dimensional ferromagnetic easy axis chain. In this case, the "particle" undergoing oscillatory motion in the presence of a magnetic field is a domain wall. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals three distinct components of the low energy spin-dynamics including a signature Bloch oscillation mode. Using parameter-free theoretical calculations, we are able to account for all features in the excitation spectrum, thus providing detailed insights into the complex dynamics in spin-anisotropic chains., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We present new experimental low-temperature heat capacity and detailed dynamical spin-structure factor data for the quantum spin liquid candidate material Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$. The measured heat capacity shows an almost perfect linear temperature dependence in the range $0.1$ K $\lesssim T\lesssim0.5$ K, reminiscent of fermionic spinon degrees of freedom. The spin structure factor exhibits two energy regimes of strong signal which display rather different but solely diffuse scattering features. We theoretically describe these findings by an effective spinon hopping model which crucially relies on the existence of strong ferromagnetically coupled triangles in the system. Our spinon theory is shown to naturally reproduce the overall weight distribution of the measured spin structure factor. Particularly, we argue that various different observed characteristic properties of the spin structure factor and the heat capacity consistently indicate the existence of a spinon Fermi surface. A closer analysis of the heat capacity at the lowest accessible temperatures hints towards the presence of weak $f$-wave spinon pairing terms inducing a small partial gap along the Fermi surface (except for discrete nodal Dirac points) and suggesting an overall $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquid scenario for Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We report the discovery of a field driven transition from a striped to woven Spin Density Wave (SDW) in the tetragonal heavy fermion compound CeAuSb$_2$. Polarized along $\bf c$, the sinusoidal SDW amplitude is 1.8(2) $\mu_B$/Ce for $T \ll T_N$=6.25(10) K with wavevector ${\bf q}_{1}=( \eta, \eta, \frac{1}{2} )$ ($\eta=0.136(2)$). For ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf c}$, harmonics appearing at $2{\bf q}_{1}$ evidence a striped magnetic texture below $\mu_\circ H_{c1}=2.78(1)$ T. Above $H_{c1}$, these are replaced by woven harmonics at ${\bf q}_{1}+{\bf q}_2=(2\eta, 0, 0)+{\bf c}^*$ until $\mu_\circ H_{c2}=5.42(5)$ T, where satellites vanish and magnetization non-linearly approaches saturation at 1.64(2) $\mu_B$/Ce for $\mu_\circ H\approx 7$ T., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A spin liquid is a new state of matter with topological order where the spin moments continue to fluctuate coherently down to the lowest temperatures rather than develop static long-range magnetic order as found in conventional magnets. For spin liquid behavior to arise in a material the magnetic Hamiltonian must be "frustrated" where the combination of lattice geometry, interactions and anisotropies gives rise to competing spin arrangements in the ground state. Theoretical Hamiltonians which produce spin liquids are spin ice, the Kitaev honeycomb model and the Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet. Spin liquid behavior however in real materials is rare because they can only approximate these Hamiltonians and often have weak higher order terms that destroy the spin liquid state. Ca10Cr7O28 is a new quantum spin liquid with magnetic Cr5+ ions that possess quantum spin number S=1/2. The spins are entirely dynamic in the ground state and the excitation spectrum is broad and diffuse as is typical of spinons which are the excitations of a spin liquid. In this paper we determine the Hamiltonian of Ca10Cr7O28 using inelastic neutron scattering under high magnetic field to induce a ferromagnetic ground state and spin-wave excitations that can be fitted to extract the interactions. We further explore the phase diagram by using inelastic neutron scattering and heat capacity measurements and establish the boundaries of the spin liquid phase as a function of magnetic field and temperature. Our results show that Ca10Cr7O28 consists of distorted kagome bilayers with several isotropic ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions where unexpectedly the ferromagnetic interactions are stronger than the antiferromagnetic ones. This complex Hamiltonian does not correspond to any known spin liquid model and points to new directions in the search for quantum spin liquid behavior.

We investigated long-wavelength nematic fluctuations in an Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs near q=(0.05,0,0) by measuring temperature-dependent renormalization of acoustic phonons through inelastic neutron scattering. We found that the phonons have conventional behavior, as would be expected in the absence of electronic nematic fluctuations. This observation implies that either electron-phonon coupling is too weak to see any effect or that nematic fluctuations are not present., Comment: 5 pages, one figure

Unlike conventional magnets where the magnetic moments are partially or completely static in the ground state, in a quantum spin liquid they remain in collective motion down to the lowest temperatures. The importance of this state is that it is coherent and highly entangled without breaking local symmetries. Such phenomena is usually sought in simple lattices where antiferromagnetic interactions and/or anisotropies that favor specific alignments of the magnetic moments are "frustrated" by lattice geometries incompatible with such order e.g. triangular structures. Despite an extensive search among such compounds, experimental realizations remain very few. Here we describe the investigation of a novel, unexplored magnetic system consisting of strong ferromagnetic and weaker antiferromagnetic isotropic interactions as realized by the compound Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$. The complex magnetism and transport properties of tetragonal Ce$_3$Cu$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ were examined through neutron scattering and physical properties measurements on polycrystalline samples. The lamellar structure consists of alternating layers of $\rm CeCu_4As_4$ with a single square Ce lattice and oxygen-linked Ce bi-layer $\rm Ce_2O_2$. Extending along $\bf c$, a tube-like Fermi surface from DFT calculations points to a quasi-two-dimensional electronic system. Peaks in the specific heat at the Ne\'{e}l temperature $T_{N}=24$ $\rm K$, $T_{2}~=~16 $ $\rm K$ and $T_{3}~=~1.9$ $ \rm K$ indicate three magnetic phase transitions or distinct cross-over phenomena. Low energy inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals of the kagome spin liquid compound ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 (Herbertsmithite) reveals antiferromagnetic correlations between impurity spins for energy transfers E < 0.8 meV (~J/20). The momentum dependence differs significantly from higher energy scattering which arises from the intrinsic kagome spins. The low energy fluctuations are characterized by diffuse scattering near wavevectors (1 0 0) and (0 0 3/2), which is consistent with antiferromagnetic correlations between pairs of nearest neighbor Cu impurities on adjacent triangular (Zn) interlayers. The corresponding impurity lattice resembles a simple cubic lattice in the dilute limit below the percolation threshold. Such an impurity model can describe prior neutron, NMR, and specific heat data. The low energy neutron data are consistent with the presence of a small spin-gap (Delta ~ 0.7 meV) in the kagome layers, similar to that recently observed by NMR. The ability to distinguish the scattering due to Cu impurities from that of the planar kagome Cu spins provides a new avenue for probing intrinsic spin liquid physics.

A single crystal of the Co2+ based pyrochlore NaCaCo2F7 was studied by inelastic neutron scattering. This frustrated magnet with quenched exchange disorder remains in a strongly correlated paramagnetic state down to one 60th of the Curie-Weiss temperature. Below T_f = 2.4 K, diffuse elastic scattering develops and comprises 30 +/- 10% of the total magnetic scattering, as expected for J_{eff} = 1/2 moments frozen on a time scale that exceeds \hbar/\delta E=3.8 ps. The diffuse scattering is consistent with short range XY antiferromagnetism with a correlation length of 16 \AA. The momentum (Q) dependence of the inelastic intensity indicates relaxing XY-like antiferromagnetic clusters at energies below ~ 5.5 meV, and collinear antiferromagnetic fluctuations above this energy. The relevant XY configurations form a continuous manifold of symmetry-related states. Contrary to well-known models that produce this continuous manifold, order-by-disorder does not select an ordered state in NaCaCo2F7 despite evidence for weak (~12 %) exchange disorder. The magnetic ground state of the hyper-kagome lattice in Na4Ir3O8 is explored via combined bulk magnetization, muon spin relaxation, and neutron scattering measurements. A short-range, frozen, state comprised of quasi-static moments develops below a characteristic temperature of T_F=6 K, revealing an inhomogeneous distribution of spins occupying the entirety of the sample volume. Quasi-static, short-range, spin correlations persist until at least 20 mK and differ substantially from the nominally dynamic response of a quantum spin liquid. Our data demonstrate that an inhomogeneous magnetic ground state arises in Na4Ir3O8 driven either by disorder inherent to the creation of the hyper-kagome lattice itself or stabilized via quantum fluctuations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

New physics can emerge in magnetic materials where quantum fluctuations are enhanced due to reduced dimensionality and strong frustration. One long sought example is the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state, where atomic magnetic moments are strongly correlated but do not order or freeze even in the limit of T -> 0. The RVB ground state does not break conventional symmetries, such as lattice translation or spin-rotation. The realization of such a quantum spin liquid in two-dimensions would represent a new state of matter. It is believed that spin liquid physics plays a role in the phenomenon of high-Tc superconductivity, and the topological properties of the spin liquid state may have applications in the field of quantum information. We present neutron scattering measurements of the spin excitations on single crystal samples of the spin-1/2 kagom\'{e} lattice antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 (also called herbertsmithite). Our observation of a spinon continuum in a two-dimensional magnet is remarkable first. We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of superconducting Ba0.67K0.33Fe2As2 (Tc = 38 K). In addition to confirming the resonance previously found in powder samples, we find that spin excitations in the normal state form longitudinally elongated ellipses along the QAFM direction in momentum space, consistent with density functional theory predictions. On cooling below Tc, while the resonance preserves its momentum anisotropy as expected, spin excitations at energies below the resonance become essentially isotropic in the in-plane momentum space and dramatically increase their correlation length. These results suggest that the superconducting gap structures in Ba0.67Ka0.33Fe2As2 are more complicated than those suggested from angle resolved photoemission experiments.

Magnetism in the orthorhombic metal CaFe$_4$As$_3$ was examined through neutron diffraction for powder and single crystalline samples. Incommensurate (${\bm q}_{\rm m}\approx (0.37-0.39)\times{\bm b}^{\ast}$) and predominantly longitudinally ($\parallel b$) modulated order develops through a 2nd order phase transition at $T_{\rm N}=89.63(6)$ K with a 3D Heisenberg-like critical exponent $\beta=0.365(6)$. A 1st order transition at $T_2=25.6(9)$ K is associated with the development of a transverse component, locking ${\bm q}_{\rm m}$ to $0.375(2){\bm b}^{\ast}$, and increasing the moments from 2.1(1) to 2.2(3) $\mu_{\rm B}$ for Fe$^{2+}$ and from 1.3(3) to 2.4(4) $\mu_{\rm B}$ for Fe$^+$.
