Abstract

Cryptomelane has been widely applied as catalyst in oxidation reactions due to its excellent redox properties and low cost. Here, a novel one-pot hydrothermal synthesis using a potassium permanganate aqueous solution as precursor and ethanol as reducing agent has successfully been developed to obtain cryptomelane nano-oxides. This synthetic route makes it possible to control the amount of potassium incorporated into the structure of the cryptomelane by selecting the appropriate synthesis temperature and ethanol initial concentration. Taking advantage of this approach, the effect of potassium concentration on the structural stability and reducibility of the cryptomelane, which are poorly discussed in the literature, has been studied. We have observed that samples with low content of potassium (~11%) show high conversions of CO to CO2 especially at low temperatures. The lower activity of the samples with high K contents (~16%) can be ascribed to the beneficial effect of K on the structural stability of cryptomelane in detriment of labile oxygen on cryptomelane surface., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, 36 references

Abstract

A Ni/CeO2/ZrO2 catalyst with improved redox properties has been washcoated onto a honeycomb cordierite monolith in the form of a nonconventional alumina-catalyst layer, just a few nanometer thick. In spite of the very low active phase loading, the monolith depicts outstanding performance in dry reforming of methane, both in terms of activity, with values reaching the thermodynamic limit already at 750 C, even under extreme weight Hourly Space Velocities (WHSV 115-346 L.g-1.h-1), as well as in terms of stability during prolonged time on stream (TOS 24-48 h)., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 19 references. Abstract

Impregnation treatments are one of the alternatives to protect concrete-based building and monuments from weathering degradation. However, it is important to consider the chemical compatibility of the reaction products with the building material. The impregnation product studied here consists of a silica oligomer able to polymerize, by a simple sol-gel process, inside the pore structure of concrete. In this work, we investigate the ability of this impregnation treatment to produce C-S-H gel in contact with cement paste. A complete characterization of the reaction products demonstrated that the silanol groups from silica oligomers react with the portlandite present in the cement paste generating a material with the chemical, structural and morphological features of CS-H gel. Simultaneously, the 29Si NMR results indicate that the Si-O units are incorporated into the existing C-S-H, increasing its chain length. Abstract

Redox and catalytic performance in total methane oxidation of a nonostructured ceria-terbia catalyst supported on magnesia is presented and compared to that of a pure ceria catalyst supported on MgO. The investigated material, Ce0.5Tb0.5Ox (3% mol.)/MgO, features several remarkable properties: a quite low total molar loading of the two lanthanide elements, high reducibility, as well as very high oxygen storage capacity al low temperatures and higher activity than MgO-supported ceria. In terms of lanthanide atomic content the catalytic performance of Ce0.5Tb0.5Ox (3% mol.)/MgO largely improves compared to that of bulk type ceria and ceria-magnesia solid solutions. Such a behavior implies proper optimization of the usage of lanthanide elements. A second contribution to atomic economy in the catalyst design relates to the fact that the new formulation demonstrate a stabilyty in the redox and catalytic performance against very high temperature treatments. An investigation on the structure of both the fresh and high-temperature-aged catalyst at the atomic scale by means of complementary aberration corrected microscopy techniques, reveals the ocuurrence of a variety of exotic, lanthanide-containing nanostructures, which span fron isolated, atomically dispersed Ln species to nonometer-sized CeTbO2-x patches, extended CeTbO2-x bilayers and 2D CeTbO2-x nanoparticles. Nanoanalytical results evidence the mixing of the two lanthanides at atomic levels in these nanostructures. The combined effects of nanostructuring, mixing of the lanthanides at the atomic level, and interaction with the MgO oxide are the roots of the improvement in funtional, redox and catalytic properties of the novel Ce0.5Tb0.5Ox (3% mol.)/MgO catalyst., Comment: 11 pages, eight figures, 3 tables, 60 references

Abstract

Supported Ni catalysts (4,5% wt%) using a Ce-Zr oxide (18/82 molar ratio and a ceria rich surface) depicting advanced redox properties, were deposited by washcoating over cordierite honeycombs (230 and 400 cpsi). FIB-STEM unveiled nanostructure details otherwise undistinguishable by conventional techniques. The catalytic performance was evaluated in the dry reforming of methane al 700-900 degree C, using a CH4:CO2 1:1 feddstock, and exploring high Weight Hourly Space Velocity (115-346 L.g-1.h-1). The structured catalyts exhibited better performance than the corresponding powers, reaching values close to rhermodynamics limits for booth reactants conversion and H2/CO ratio, from 750 dgree C, and no deactivation was observed in prolongued experiments (24-48 h). This was related to both the high catalytic efficiency after being deposited with low loading on the cordierite and the intrinsic advantages of the monolithic reactor, like preventing from the kinetic control that operates in powdered samples under high WHSV or limiting the deactivation., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, 61 references

Abstract

Grapevine is one of the most important fruit crops in the world. However, the effect of climate change on Vitis vinifera L. could dramatically affect the productivity of vineyards, causing serious economic and ecological damage. Some of the most important factors are drought and water availability. Varietal sensitivity to these abiotic stresses is more pronounced in commercial cultivars like 'Merlot' than local cultivars like 'Callet'. In order to better understand the adaptive differences between these two cultivars, we used transcriptomic, metabolic and hormonal analyses, at three different levels of drought stress (mild, high and extreme), using Richter 110 as rootstock. Differential gene expression (DGE) analysis was performed using RNA-seq data for each condition in both roots and leaves. DGE results showed that the response started in roots, with more differential expression at mild drought stress in these two cultivars. However, more differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) were found out in 'Merlot' than 'Callet', with the most significant response to mild drought in 'Merlot'. However, in high and extreme drought conditions, DGE analysis in leaves showed an increase of DEGs in the two cultivars, being more pronounced in 'Callet' than 'Merlot', suggesting a different the strategy of response between them. Hormonal and metabolic results displayed two different pathways in drought responses. While 'Merlot' allocated more resources to maintain cellular turgor, increasing sugar and alditol concentration in cells, 'Callet' produced more secondary metabolites like mono- or sesqui-terpenes, assisting with sugar transport to the fruit and thus increasing berry quality. Furthermore, a higher photosynthetic activity was found in 'Callet' than 'Merlot', showing higher water use efficiency.

Abstract

The domestication process in grapevines has facilitated the fixation of desired traits. Nowadays, vegetative propagation through cuttings enables easier preservation of these genotypes compared to sexual reproduction. Nonetheless, even with vegetative propagation, various phenotypes are often present within the same vineyard due to the accumulation of somatic mutations. These mutations are not the sole factors influencing phenotype. Alongside somatic variations, epigenetic variation has been proposed as a pivotal player in regulating phenotypic variability acquired during domestication. The emergence of these epialleles might have significantly influenced grapevine domestication over time. This study aims to investigate the impact of domestication on methylation patterns in cultivated grapevines. Reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing was conducted on 18 cultivated and wild accessions. Results revealed that cultivated grapevines exhibited higher methylation levels than their wild counterparts. Differential Methylation Analysis between wild and cultivated grapevines identified a total of 9955 differentially methylated cytosines, of which 78% were hypermethylated in cultivated grapevines. Functional analysis shows that core methylated genes (consistently methylated in both wild and cultivated accessions) are associated with stress response and terpenoid/isoprenoid metabolic processes. Meanwhile, genes with differential methylation are linked to protein targeting to the peroxisome, ethylene regulation, histone modifications, and defense response. Collectively, our results highlight the significant roles that epialleles may have played throughout the domestication history of grapevines.

Abstract

We elucidate grapevine evolution and domestication histories with 3525 cultivated and wild accessions worldwide. In the Pleistocene, harsh climate drove the separation of wild grape ecotypes caused by continuous habitat fragmentation. Then, domestication occurred concurrently about 11,000 years ago in Western Asia and the Caucasus to yield table and wine grapevines. The Western Asia domesticates dispersed into Europe with early farmers, introgressed with ancient wild western ecotypes, and subsequently diversified along human migration trails into muscat and unique western wine grape ancestries by the late Neolithic. Analyses of domestication traits also reveal new insights into selection for berry palatability, hermaphroditism, muscat flavor, and berry skin color. These data demonstrate the role of the grapevines in the early inception of agriculture across Eurasia.

Abstract

We elucidate grapevine evolution and domestication histories with 3525 cultivated and wild accessions worldwide. In the Pleistocene, harsh climate drove the separation of wild grape ecotypes caused by continuous habitat fragmentation. Then, domestication occurred concurrently about 11,000 years ago in Western Asia and the Caucasus to yield table and wine grapevines. The Western Asia domesticates dispersed into Europe with early farmers, introgressed with ancient wild western ecotypes, and subsequently diversified along human migration trails into muscat and unique western wine grape ancestries by the late Neolithic. Analyses of domestication traits also reveal new insights into selection for berry palatability, hermaphroditism, muscat flavor, and berry skin color. These data demonstrate the role of the grapevines in the early inception of agriculture across Eurasia.

Abstract

Increase in soil salinity, driven by climate change, is a widespread constrain for viticulture across several regions, including the Mediterranean basin. The implementation of salt-tolerant varieties is sought after to reduce the negative impact of salinity in grape production. An accession of wild grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sylvestris), named AS1B, found on the coastline of Asturias (Spain), could be of interest toward the achievement of salt-tolerant varieties, as it demonstrated the ability to survive and grow under high levels of salinity. In the present study, AS1B is compared against widely cultivated commercial rootstock Richter 110, regarding their survival capabilities, and transcriptomic profiles analysis allowed us to identify the genes by employing RNA-seq and gene ontology analyses under increasing salinity and validate (via RT-qPCR) seven salinity-stress-induced genes. The results suggest contrasting transcriptomic responses between AS1B and Richter 110. AS1B is more responsive to a milder increase in salinity and builds up specific mechanisms of tolerance over a sustained salt stress, while Richter 110 maintains a constitutive expression until high and prolonged saline inputs, when it mainly shows responses to osmotic stress. The genetic basis of AS1B’s strategy to confront salinity could be valuable in cultivar breeding programs, to expand the current range of salt-tolerant rootstocks, aiming to improve the adaptation of viticulture against climate change.

Abstract

Introduction: transfusion services along with the processing and analysis of blood components, reception of transfusion requests, blood transfusions, registration of transfusion reactions and the follow-up of transfused patients at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital generate a large volume of information every day. Computerization will allow: optimizing the use of blood units, improved the monitoring of transfused patients speeding-up the decision-making process as well. Objective: to develop a programming tool and an associated database to contribute to the information management process related to blood transfusions at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado, General Teaching Hospital in Pinar del Río province. Method: this is a Technological Innovation Research on the transfusion management process in a chosen hospital of Pinar del Río, applying theoretical methods such as historical-logical and analysis of the documents related to this process, Extreme Programming has been used as a development methodology and the specifications of the Unified Modeling Language for web engineering. Results: the web application allows the management of information associated with blood transfusions in the hospital, enabling the organization and centralization of the corresponding information in a database operated and controlled by the service providers themselves. Conclusions: the basis for the computerization of blood-transfusion management process in a hospital unit facilitates the procedure and the therapeutic decision making, giving information in real time promptly and effectively

Abstract

Increase in soil salinity, driven by climate change, is a widespread constrain for viticulture across several regions, including the Mediterranean basin. The implementation of salt-tolerant varieties is sought after to reduce the negative impact of salinity in grape production. An accession of wild grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sylvestris), named AS1B, found on the coastline of Asturias (Spain), could be of interest toward the achievement of salt-tolerant varieties, as it demonstrated the ability to survive and grow under high levels of salinity. In the present study, AS1B is compared against widely cultivated commercial rootstock Richter 110, regarding their survival capabilities, and transcriptomic profiles analysis allowed us to identify the genes by employing RNA-seq and gene ontology analyses under increasing salinity and validate (via RT-qPCR) seven salinity-stress-induced genes. The results suggest contrasting transcriptomic responses between AS1B and Richter 110. AS1B is more responsive to a milder increase in salinity and builds up specific mechanisms of tolerance over a sustained salt stress, while Richter 110 maintains a constitutive expression until high and prolonged saline inputs, when it mainly shows responses to osmotic stress. The genetic basis of AS1B's strategy to confront salinity could be valuable in cultivar breeding programs, to expand the current range of salt-tolerant rootstocks, aiming to improve the adaptation of viticulture against climate change.

Abstract

The G2-S16 polyanionic carbosilane dendrimer is a promising microbicide that inhibits HSV-2 infection in vitro and in vivo in mice models. This G2-S16 dendrimer inhibits HSV-2 infection even in the presence of semen. Murine models, such as BALB/c female mice, are generally used to characterize host-pathogen interactions within the vaginal tract. However, the composition of endogenous vaginal flora remains largely undefined with modern microbiome analyses. It is important to note that the G2-S16 dendrimer does not change healthy mouse vaginal microbiome where Pseudomonas (10.2–79.1%) and Janthinobacterium (0.7–13%) are the more abundant genera. The HSV-2 vaginally infected female mice showed a significant microbiome alteration because an increase of Staphylococcus (up to 98.8%) and Escherichia (30.76%) levels were observed becoming these bacteria the predominant genera. BALB/c female mice vaginally-treated with the G2-S16 dendrimer and infected with the HSV-2 maintained a healthy vaginal microbiome similar to uninfected female mice. Summarizing, the G2-S16 polyanionic carbosilane dendrimer inhibits the HSV-2 infection in the presence of semen and prevents the alteration of mice female vaginal microbiome.

Abstract

Anionic carbosilane dendrimers such as G2-S16 are very effective in preventing HSV-2 infection both in vitro and in vivo. We present the main achievements obtained for the G2-S16 dendrimer in vivo, especially related to its efficacy against HSV-2 infection. Moreover, we discuss the mechanisms by which the G2-S16 dendrimer applied vaginally as a topical microbicide has been demonstrated to be safe and harmless for the vaginal microbiome balance, as both conditions present an essential step that has to be overcome during microbicide development. This review points to the marked protective effect of the G2-S16 dendrimer against sexually transmitted HSV-2 infection, supporting its role as a possible microbicide against HSV-2 infection.
