SbPO4 is a complex monoclinic layered material characterized by a strong activity of the non-bonding lone electron pair (LEP) of Sb. The strong cation LEP leads to the formation of layers piled up along the a-axis and linked by weak Sb-O electrostatic interactions. In fact, Sb is 4-fold coordination with O similar to what occurs with the P-O coordination, despite the large difference of ionic radii and electronegativity between both elements. Here we report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural and vibrational properties of SbPO4 at high pressure. We show that SbPO4 is not only one of the most compressible phosphates but also one of the most compressible compounds of the ABO4 family. Moreover, it has a considerable anisotropic compression behavior with the largest compression occurring along a direction close to a-axis and governed by the compression of the LEP and the weak inter-layer Sb-O bonds. The strong compression along the a-axis leads to a subtle modification of the monoclinic crystal structure above 3 GPa leading from a 2D to a 3D material. Moreover, the onset of a reversible pressure-induced phase transition is observed above 9 GPa, which is completed above 20 GPa. We propose that the high-pressure phase is a triclinic distortion of the original monoclinic phase. The Hall-symbols for describing unambiguously the generators of space groups have been extended to describe whatever setting of the 1651 types of magnetic space groups (Shubnikov groups). A computer program called MHALL has been developed for parsing the Hall symbols, generate the full list of symmetry operators and identify the transformation to the standard setting.

Ferroelectric oxides have attracted much attention due to their wide range of applications, especially in electronic devices such as nonvolatile memories and tunnel junctions. As a result, the monolithic integration of these materials into silicon technology and its nanostructuration to develop alternative cost-effective processes are among the central points in current technology. In this work, we used a chemical route to obtain nanowire thin films of a novel Sr1+{\delta}Mn8O16 (SMO) hollandite-type manganese oxide on silicon. Scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with crystallographic computing reveals a crystal structure comprising hollandite and pyrolusite units sharing the edges of their MnO6 octahedra, resulting in three types of tunnels arranged along the c axis, where ordering of the Sr atoms produces a natural symmetry breaking. The novel structure gives rise to a ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity, as revealed by local Direct Piezoelectric Force Microscopy measurements, which confirmed the ferroelectric nature of SMO nanowire thin films at room temperature and showed a piezoelectric coefficient d33 value of 22,6 pC/N. Moreover, we proved that flexible vertical SMO nanowires can be harvested and converted into electric output energy through the piezoelectric effect, showing an excellent deformability and high interface recombination. This work indicates the possibility of engineering the integration of 1D manganese oxides on silicon, a step which precedes the production of microelectronic devices.

Neutron spherical polarimetry, which is directly sensitive to the absolute magnetic configuration and domain population, has been used in this work to unambiguously prove the multiferroicity of (ND4)2[FeCl5(D2O)]. We demonstrate that the application of an electric field upon cooling results in the stabilization of a single-cycloidal magnetic domain below 6.9 K, while poling in the opposite electric field direction produces the full population of the domain with opposite magnetic chirality. We prove the complete switchability of the magnetic domains at low temperature by the applied electric field, which constitutes a direct proof of the strong magnetoelectric coupling. Additionally, we refine the magnetic structure of the ordered ground state, determining the underlying magnetic space group consistent with the direction of the ferroelectric polarization, and we provide evidence of a collinear amplitude-modulated state with magnetic moments along the a-axis in the temperature region between 6.9 and 7.2 K.

Our results describe an unprecedented example of change in the mechanism of magnetically-induced electric polarization from spin current to spin-dependent p-d hybridization model. We have followed the evolution of the magnetic structures of (ND4)2[FeCl5 D2O] compound using single crystal neutron diffraction under external magnetic field. The spin arrangements change from incommensurate cycloidal to commensurate distorted-cycloidal and finally to quasi-collinear. The determination of the magnetic structures allows us to explain the observed electric polarization in the different ferroelectric phases. Two different magneto-electric coupling mechanisms are at play: the spin-current mechanism for external magnetic field below 5 T, and the spin dependent p-d hybridization mechanism for magnetic field above this value, being this compound the first example reported presenting this sequence of magneto-electric coupling mechanisms.

R2RhIn8 compounds (space group P4/mmm, R is a rare-earth element) belong to a large group of structurally related tetragonal materials which involves several heavy-fermion superconductors based on Ce. We have succeeded to grow single crystals of compounds with Nd, Dy and Er and following our previous bulk measurements, we performed neutron-diffraction studies to determine their magnetic structures. The Laue diffraction experiment showed that the antiferromagnetic order below the N\'eel temperature is in all three compounds characterized by the propagation vector k = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The amplitude and direction of the magnetic moments, as well as the invariance symmetry of the magnetic structure, were determined by subsequent experiments using two- and four-circle diffractometers. We present a comparative study of the magnetic, transport and structural properties of $Nd_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_{3+\delta}$ [$\delta=$ 0.02(1) and 0.04(1)]. We have found significant differences between the low temperature magnetic orders and the magnetization curves below $T_{CO}\approx 250 K$ of the two samples. In particular one component of the magnetic moment presents a ferromagnetic coupling between the $(0 0 1)$ planes ($P bnm$ setting) deviating the angle between neighboring $Mn$ ions from $180^o$ (perfect CE order) to $150^o$ [$\delta=0.02(1)$] and $130^o$ [$\delta= 0.04(1)$]. These results imply a remarkable $\delta$ dependence which is discussed in the light of a non-random spatial distribution of defects in the perfect charge order scheme., Comment: 5 pages; submitted to Phys.
