Life history theory predicts increased parental investment comes with fitness costs, often expressed as negative effects on survival and future reproduction. To better understand the costs of reproduction and life history trade‐offs, we evaluated calcium supplementation at a high‐elevation site in Colorado as a novel approach to experimentally alter reproductive investment in nesting female Tachycineta bicolor (tree swallow). Calcium is a nutrient critical to avian reproduction as the intake of natural calcium is essential for egg production, embryo development, and nestling growth. Altering calcium availability exclusively during the breeding season allowed examination of individual biological responses to experimental modification of reproduction, as well as the reproductive costs associated with egg production and laying an entire clutch. As a functional endpoint and proxy for fitness and longevity, telomere length was measured at the beginning and end of each breeding season. Telomeres—protective "caps" at the ends of chromosomes—have been shown to shorten with aging and a variety of stressors, including higher reproductive output. Results demonstrate that tree swallow mothers supplemented with calcium during the breeding season experience higher reproductive output and produce offspring with longer telomeres, which came at the cost of relatively shorter telomeres during the reproductive season. These findings provide additional support for reproductive trade‐offs, and also challenge previous calcium supplementation studies that suggest excess calcium reduces the cost of reproduction. - Abstract
Metacognitive training (MCT) is an effective treatment for psychosis. Longitudinal trajectories of treatment response are unknown but could point to strategies to maximize treatment efficacy during the first episodes. This work aims to explore the possible benefit of using latent class mixed models (LCMMs) to understand how treatment response differs between metacognitive training and psychoeducation. We conducted LCMMs in 28 patients that received MCT and 34 patients that received psychoeducation. We found that MCT is effective in improving cognitive insight in all patients but that these effects wane at follow-up. In contrast, psychoeducation does not improve cognitive insight, and may increase self-certainty in a group of patients. - Abstract
We have investigated if EWH could counteract or prevent cardiovascular damage induced by high level of Cd exposure in rats. Male Wistar rats were treated for 14 days with: (A) Untreated - intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of distilled water and tap water by gavage; (B) Cd − 1 mg/kg of bw/day of CdCl2 (i.p.) and tap water by gavage; (C) EWH – distilled water (i.p.) and 1 mg/kg/day of EWH by gavage; (D) CdEWH – both treatments. EWH prevented the increase on systolic blood pressure, vascular dysfunction, and inflammation after Cd exposure; prevent the activation of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and its derived contractile protanoids, inhibits angiotensin II by the reduction of ACE activity and prevents the increased oxidative stress mainly mediated by NADPH oxidase. Multifunctional EWH could be considered as a natural alternative therapy to counteract the deleterious effects caused by high level of Cd exposure.

- Abstract
Deficits in social cognition and metacognition impact the course of psychosis. Sex differences in social cognition and metacognition could explain heterogeneity in psychosis. 174 (58 females) patients with first-episode psychosis completed a clinical, neuropsychological, social cognitive, and metacognitive assessment. Subsequent latent profile analysis split by sex yielded two clusters common to both sexes (a Homogeneous group, 53% and 79.3%, and an Indecisive group, 18.3% and 8.6% of males and females, respectively), a specific male profile characterized by presenting jumping to conclusions (28.7%) and a specific female profile characterized by cognitive biases (12.1%). Males and females in the homogeneous profile seem to have a more benign course of illness. Males with jumping to conclusions had more clinical symptoms and more neuropsychological deficits. Females with cognitive biases were younger and had lower self-esteem. - Abstract
In a time of crisis, aggravated by Covid-19, which has hindered educational work, causing school closures and affecting students all over the world. This is why we believe that educational institutions must train young students towards a more sustainable future from an economic, social and environmental point of view as a socialising agent, guiding and supported by the knowledge and scientific and technological advances that human beings themselves have been achieving. For this reason, we propose to empower students, as protagonists of the future and agents of social change, so that they become involved in the transformation process that humanity is undergoing, through education for sustainable development and connect with real problems close to their environment such as harassment, poverty, hunger, inequality, conflicts, climate change or the loss of biodiversity. To this end, we believe that the new education should be based on human rights and a culture of peace, where we try to solve economic, social and environmental problems through the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, and using the following two areas as pillars of intervention: Sustainable Development Goals and culture., En un momento de crisis, agravada por la Covid-19, que ha entorpecido la labor educativa, provocando cierres de escuelas y afectando a estudiantes de todo el mundo. Es por ello que consideramos que las instituciones educativas deben de formar a los jóvenes estudiantes hacia un futuro más sostenible desde el punto de vista económico, social y medioambiental como agente socializador, orientado y apoyado en los conocimientos y avances científicos y tecnológicos que el propio ser humano ha venido logrando. Por este motivo, proponemos empoderar a los estudiantes, como protagonistas del futuro y agentes de cambio social, para que se impliquen en el proceso de transformación que está viviendo la humanidad, por medio de la educación para el desarrollo sostenible y conectar con problemas reales cercanos a su entorno como el acoso, la pobreza, el hambre, la desigualdad, los conflictos, el cambio climático o la pérdida de biodiversidad. Para ello, la nueva educación debe estar basada en los Derechos humanos y una Cultura de paz, donde se intente solventar los problemas económicos, sociales y medioambientales a través de la Agenda 2030 y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, y utilizando como pilares de intervención los dos ámbitos siguientes: Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible y la cultura.

We developed an ELISPOT assay for evaluating Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV)--specific T-cell responses in dromedary camels. After single modified vaccinia virus Ankara-MERS-S vaccination, seropositive camels showed increased levels of MERS-CoV--specific T cells and antibodies, indicating suitability of camel vaccinations in disease-endemic areas as a promising approach to control infection. Angesichts der großen Zahl neuer kleiner organischer Moleküle, die kontinuierlich für verschiedene Anwendungen entwickelt und vermarktet werden, wird der Bedarf an robusten Risikobewertungsstrategien zur Gewährleistung der Sicherheit für unsere Gesundheit und Umwelt verstärkt. Die Toxizitätsbewertung beruht derzeit auf Tierversuchen, die sowohl ethisch bedenklich als auch zeitlich und finanziell sehr kostspielig sind. Daher werden erhebliche Anstrengungen unternommen, um in-vitro-Assays und in-silico-Tools zu entwickeln, die diese Tierversuche reduzieren oder ersetzen können und gleichzeitig die Sicherheit der Substanzen gewährleisten. Diese Dissertation befasst sich mit der Entwicklung von in-silico-Toxizitätsmodellen, die aktuelle Herausforderungen für die Weiterentwicklung sicherer und robuster alternativer Methoden adressieren. Der erste Teil beschäftigt sich mit der Vorhersage von in-vivo Toxizität aus einer Perspektive geringerer Komplexität, indem einzelne molekulare auslösende Ereignisse (MIEs) als Ausgangspunkt für die Bestimmung adverser Signalwege von toxischen in-vivo-Effekten vorhergesagt werden. Dies wurde am Beispiel der Störung des Hormonsystems untersucht, einem besonders schwierigen Toxizitätsendpunkt aufgrund der vielen beteiligten Regulationswege. Die weiteren drei Teile der Dissertation befassen sich direkt mit der Vorhersage von in-vivo Effekten und insbesondere mit der Entwicklung neuer Methoden, um in-vivo Toxizitätsmodelle zu verbessern. Zu diesem Zweck werden komplementäre biologische Informationen (z. B. Pharmakokinetik, MIE oder Metabolismus) bereits in der Modellentwicklungsphase eingeführt. Darüber hinaus untersuchen diese in-vivo Modelle die Möglichkeiten, die Conformal Prediction, ein Verfahren zur mathematischen Schätzung der Zuverlässigkeit der Vorhersagen, im Kontext der computergestützten Toxikologie bietet., Given the large number of new small organic molecules that are being developed and commercialized for diverse applications, there is an urgent need for robust risk assessment strategies to ensure the safety of chemicals with respect to health and the environment. Toxicity assessment currently relies on animal assays that imply serious ethical concerns as well as high costs in terms of time and money. Therefore, substantial efforts are set on the development of in vitro assays and computational tools that can reduce or replace these animal assays while ensuring the compounds’ safety. This dissertation aims at the development of computational toxicology tools tackling current difficulties for the advancement of safe and robust alternative methods. The first part focuses on approaching in vivo toxicity prediction from a lower complexity perspective by predicting single molecular initiating events (MIEs) as a starting point for the determination of adverse outcome pathways of in vivo effects. This was studied at the example of endocrine disruption, a specially challenging toxicity endpoint due to the many regulation pathways involved. The following three parts of the dissertation tackle the prediction of in vivo effects directly. These models aim to enhance in vivo toxicity prediction by including complementary biological information (e.g. pharmacokinetics, MIEs or metabolism) already in the model development phase. Moreover, these in vivo models explore the opportunities that conformal prediction, a framework for the mathematical estimation of the confidence of the predictions, offers in the context of computational toxicology.

Simple Summary: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, lung cancer patients have been considered an especially vulnerable population and have been prioritized for vaccination. However, several aspects (degree of immunity, potential interaction with active anticancer therapy, safety, and tolerability of the vaccines) remained unclear. We sought to evaluate the immune response to vaccines in this population and detail vaccine-related adverse events. In our cohort of 126 lung cancer patients, SARS-CoV-2 vaccines were safe irrespective of the systemic therapy, and vaccine-related adverse events and efficacy were similar regardless the age. Most of the patients developed SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after first and second dose of the vaccine, which was maintained over time. Rates of infection after vaccination were low, more frequent with the Omicron variant, with a milder clinical course after vaccination. The rate of hospital admissions due to COVID-19 infection was very low, and no COVID-19-related deaths occurred in our cohort of patients. Lung cancer patients represent a subgroup of special vulnerability in whom the SARS-CoV-2 infection could attain higher rates of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, those patients were recommended to receive SARS-CoV-2 vaccines once they were approved. However, little was known at that time regarding the degree of immunity developed after vaccination or vaccine-related adverse events, and more uncertainty involved the real need for a third dose. We sought to evaluate the immune response developed after vaccination, as well as the safety and efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in a cohort of patients with lung cancer. Patients were identified through the Oncology/Hematology Outpatient Vaccination Program. Anti-Spike IgG was measured before any vaccine and at 3–6-, 6–9- and 12–15-month time points after the 2nd dose. Detailed clinical data were also collected. In total, 126 patients with lung cancer participated and received at least one dose of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. At 3–6 months after 2nd dose, 99.1% of baseline seronegative patients seroconverted and anti-Spike IgG titers went from a median value of 9.45 to 720 UI/mL. At the 6–9-month time point, titers raised to a median value of 924 UI/mL, and at 12–15 months, after the boost dose, they reached a median value of 3064 UI/mL. Adverse events to the vaccine were mild, and no SARS- CoV-2 infection-related deaths were recorded. In this lung cancer cohort, COVID-19 vaccines were safe and effective irrespective of the systemic anticancer therapy. Most of the patients developed anti-Spike IgG after the second dose, and these titers were maintained over time with low infection and reinfection rates with a mild clinical course.
