Abstract

The excitation function for the 7 alpha de-excitation of $^{28}$Si nuclei excited to high excitation energies in the collisions of 35 MeV/nucleon $^{28}$Si with $^{12}$C reveals resonance structures that may indicate the population of high spin toroidal isomers such as those predicted by a number of recent theoretical calculations. Abstract

Hydrazine (HZ) and monomethylhydrazine (MMH) in air were monitored continuously using a hand-held ion mobility spectrometer equipped with membrane inlet, 63Ni ion source, acetone reagent gas, and ambient temperature drift tube. Response characteristics included detection limit, 6 ppb; linear range, 10-600 ppb; saturated response, >2 ppm; and stable response after 15-30 min. Ammonia interfered in hydrazines detection through a product ion with the same drift time as that for MMH and HZ. Acetone reagent gas was replaced with 5-nonanone to alter drift times of product ions and separate ammonia from MMH and HZ. Patterns in mobility spectra, ion identifications from mass spectra, and fragmentation cross-sections from collisional-induced dissociations suggest that drift times are governed by ion-cluster equilibria in the drift region of the mobility spectrometer. Practical aspects including calibration, stability, and reproducibility are reported from the use of a hand-held mobility spectrometer on the space shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-37.

Abstract

Several experimental and modular studies are conducted to explain the variability that is observed in the numbers of viable bacteria remaining in food after a mild heat treatment. The results demonstrate the presence of a linear relationship between the variability observed in the bacterial concentration and the size of its population in the food substances.

Abstract

The selection of pharmacotherapy for patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) depends on several factors, including age, prominent symptoms, symptom severity, control of AR, patient preferences, and cost. Allergen exposure and the resulting symptoms vary, and treatment adjustment is required. Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) might be beneficial for the assessment of disease control. CDSSs should be based on the best evidence and algorithms to aid patients and health care professionals to jointly determine treatment and its step-up or step-down strategy depending on AR control. Contre les MAladies Chroniques pour un VIeillissement Actif en Languedoc-Roussillon (MACVIA-LR [fighting chronic diseases for active and healthy ageing]), one of the reference sites of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, has initiated an allergy sentinel network (the MACVIA-ARIA Sentinel Network). A CDSS is currently being developed to optimize AR control. An algorithm developed by consensus is presented in this article. This algorithm should be confirmed by appropriate trials.

Abstract

Online reviews have become increasingly important in tourist destinations and they affect the way in which they are perceived by potential consumers. They represent an overabundant source of information in the form of open answers, where customers freely express their experience regarding the tourist destination. Previous studies have made use of the shared experiences of visitors to obtain the main attributes of a tourist destination. This article goes one step further and proposes the identification of those attributes that are uniquely associated with a tourist destination when compared with some other destinations, using a combination of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s honestly significant difference. Findings reveal that the unique attributes are the best predictors of tourist destinations when compared with other destinations. Additionally, they represent a competitive advantage that could be reinforced by planners or agencies while minimizing the effect of the unique attributes of competitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Substrate heating in greenhouses shows important benefits for crop development. Yet, the high energy costs of these systems demand the application of energy-saving strategies, which requires an appropriate dimensioning of the system that allows for prediction of substrate temperature distribution and energy performance. In this study, we analyze the effect of heating cable spacing on these two factors. To perform the analysis, we simulated the operation of an electric cable heating system during one day. The heating cable was buried in a sand substrate at 225 mm depth and at spacings of l00, 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 mm. The simulation was carried out by using a model developed with a general-purpose finite element code that enabled the study of the thermal behavior of different geometries in a two-dimensional space and in a transient state. The results of the model revealed a rather homogeneous substrate temperature distribution for heating cable spacings of up to 250 ram. In addition, the percentage of the heat flow supplied that reached the root zone was similar for all the configurations studied, with values of 66% to 67%, which suggests that the use of the heat supplied was very similar in all configurations. Moreover, energy consumption decreased with the increase in spacing between cables. However, the temperatures required under the boundary conditions applied in the analysis were not achieved for spacings larger than 300 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In spite of the high prevalence of advanced colorectal cancer in the elderly, we have little data on the efficacy and toxicity of chemotherapy in this age group. Raltitrexed is a thymidylate synthetase inhibitor with known activity in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer. The objective of this study was to analyse the efficacy and tolerance of raltitrexed in elderly patients with advanced colorectal cancer. 92 patients diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer aged >or=70 years were entered into the study. Raltitrexed was given at a dose of 3 mg/m(2) once every 3 weeks for a minimum of three cycles. A total of 511 cycles were given with a median of five cycles per patient. 20 out of the 90 patients evaluable for response achieved a partial response (PR) (22%, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 17-36%), 43 (48%) remained stable and 27 showed progression (30%). The mean duration of response was 24 weeks and the progression-free interval was 15 weeks. The overall median survival was 41 weeks. 31 patients (39%, 95% CI: 28-50%) experienced a clinical benefit (improvement of the performance status without a worsening of symptoms or relief of symptoms without a worsening of the performance status). The main toxicities were gastrointestinal and haematological. 12 patients (13%) developed grade 3-4 side-effects: 7 had nausea/vomiting (8%), 6 a transaminase increase (7%), 4 asthenia (4%), 3 diarrhoea (3%), 2 neutropenia (2%), 2 anaemia (2%) and 1 thrombocytopenia (1%). Trichodorus intermedius n. sp., Trichodorus dilatatus n. sp., and Paratrichodorus (Atlantadorus) grandis n. sp. are described from soil around native plants of Southern California. The females of the three subgenera of Paratrichodorus are further characterized on the basis of the vulva, which is pore-like in Atlantadorus, a longitudinal slit in Paratrichodorus, and a transverse slit in Nanidorus.
