Abstract

In this work, we provide new examples of Anti-de Sitter black holes with a planar base manifold in four-dimensional Critical Gravity by considering nonlinear electrodynamics as a matter source. We find a general solution characterized by the presence of only one integration constant where, for a suitable election of coupling constants, we can show the existence of one or more horizons. Additionally, we compute its non-null thermodynamical quantities through a variety of techniques, testing the validity of the first law of thermodynamics as well as a Smarr formula. Finally, we analyze the local thermodynamical stability of the solutions. To our knowledge, these charged configurations are the first example with Critical Gravity where their thermodynamical quantities are not zero.

Abstract

In this work, we study the existence of asymptotically Lifshitz black holes in Critical Gravity in four dimensions with a negative cosmological constant under two scenarios: First, including dilatonic fields as the matter source, where we find an asymptotically Lifshitz solution for a fixed value of the dynamical exponent $z=4$. As a second case, we also added a non-minimally coupled scalar field $\Phi$ with a potential given by a mass term and a quartic term. Using this approach, we found a solution for $z$ defined in the interval $(1,4)$, recovering the Schwarzchild-Anti-de Sitter case with planar base manifold in the isotropic limit. Moreover, when we analyzed the limiting case $z=4$, we found that there exists an additional solution that can be interpreted as a stealth configuration in which the stealth field is overflying the $z=4$ solution without the non-minimally coupled field $\Phi$. Finally, we studied the non-trivial thermodynamics of these new anisotropic solutions and found that they all satisfy the First Law of Thermodynamics as well as the Smarr relation. 12. Emergency Tracheal Intubation in Patients with COVID-19: A Single-center, Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract

Introduction: The objective of this study was to compare airway management technique, performance, and peri-intubation complications during the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) using a single-center cohort of patients requiring emergent intubation.Methods: We retrospectively collected data on non-operating room (OR) intubations from February 1–April 23, 2020. All patients undergoing emergency intubation outside the OR were eligible for inclusion. Data were entered using an airway procedure note integrated within the electronic health record. Variables included level of training and specialty of the laryngoscopist, the patient’s indication for intubation, methods of intubation, induction and paralytic agents, grade of view, use of video laryngoscopy, number of attempts, and adverse events. We performed a descriptive analysis comparing intubations with an available positive COVID-19 test result with cases that had either a negative or unavailable test result.Results: We obtained 406 independent procedure notes filed between February 1–April 23, 2020, and of these, 123 cases had a positive COVID-19 test result. Residents performed fewer tracheal intubations in COVID-19 cases when compared to nurse anesthetists (26.0% vs 37.4%). Video laryngoscopy was used significantly more in COVID-19 cases (91.1% vs 56.8%). No difference in first-pass success was observed between COVID-19 positive cases and controls (89.4% vs. 89.0%, p = 1.0). An increased rate of oxygen desaturation was observed in COVID-19 cases (20.3% vs. 9.9%) while there was no difference in the rate of other recorded complications and first-pass success.Discussion: An average twofold increase in the rate of tracheal intubation was observed after March 24, 2020, corresponding with an influx of COVID-19 positive cases. We observed adherence to society guidelines regarding performance of tracheal intubation by an expert laryngoscopist and the use of video laryngoscopy.

Abstract

Wave groups can be detected and studied by using the wave envelope. So far, the method used to compute the wave envelope employs the Riesz transform. However, such a technique always produces symmetric envelopes, which is only realistic in the case of linear waves. In this paper we present a new method to compute the wave envelope providing more realistic results. In particular, the method allows to detect non-symmetry in the wave envelope, something useful, for instance, when detecting groups of high waves. The method computes first the local maxima and minima of the sea surface, and then determines the wave envelope by combining discrete methods, namely the use of the Delaunay triangulation, and tensor-product splines. The proposed method has been applied to simulated wave fields, and also to wave elevations data measured by an X-band radar. Abstract

We study the propagation of exact gravitational waves in the ghost-free bimetric theory. Our focus is on type N spacetimes compatible with the cosmological constants provided by the bigravity interaction potential, and particularly in the single class known by allowing at least a Killing symmetry: the AdS waves. They have the advantage of being represented by a generalized Kerr-Schild transformation from AdS spacetime. This means a notorious simplification in bigravity by allowing to straightforwardly compute any power of its interaction square root matrix, opening the door to explore physically meaningful exact configurations. For these exact gravitational waves the complex dynamical structure of bigravity decomposes into elementary exact massless or massive excitations propagating on AdS. We use a complexified formulation of the Euler-Darboux equations to provide for the first time the general solutions to the massive version of the Siklos equation which rules the resulting AdS-waves dynamics, using an integral representation originally due to Poisson. Inspired in this progress we tackle the subtle problem on how matter couples to bigravity and concretely if this occurs through a composite metric, which is hard to handle in a general setting. Surprisingly, the Kerr-Schild ansatz brings again a huge simplification in how the related energy-momentum tensors are calculated. This allows us to explicitly characterize AdS waves supported in one case by a massless free scalar field and by a wavefront-homogeneous Maxwell field in another. Considering the most general allowed Maxwell source instead is a highly nontrivial task, that we accomplish by exploiting again the complexified Euler-Darboux description and taking advantage of the classical Riemann method. Abstract

We develop a geometric criterion that unambiguously characterizes and also provides a systematic and effective computational procedure for finding all the residual symmetries of any gravitational Ansatz . We apply the criterion to several examples starting with the Collinson Ansatz for circular stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. We reproduce the residual symmetries already known for this Ansatz including their conformal symmetry, for which we identify the corresponding infinite generators spanning the two related copies of the Witt algebra. We also consider the noncircular generalization of this Ansatz and show how the noncircular contributions on the one hand break the conformal invariance and on the other hand enhance the standard translations symmetries of the circular Killing vectors to supertranslations depending on the direction along which the circularity is lost. As another application of the method, the well-known relation defining conjugate gravitational potentials introduced by Chandrasekhar, that makes possible the derivation of the Kerr black hole from a trivial solution of the Ernst equations, is deduced as a special point of the general residual symmetry of the Papapetrou Ansatz. We emphasize how the election of Weyl coordinates, which determines the Papapetrou Ansatz, breaks also the conformal freedom of the stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. Additionally, we study AdS waves for any dimension generalizing the residual symmetries already known for lower dimensions and exhibiting a very complex infinite-dimensional Lie algebra containing three families: two of them span the semidirect sum of the Witt algebra and scalar supertranslations and the third generates vector supertranslations. We manage to comprehend that the infinite connected group is the precise diffeomorphisms subgroup allowing to locally deform the AdS background into AdS waves., Comment: Affiliations have been updated

Abstract

Simple Summary: In arid and semi-arid regions of the world, goats are typically raised in rangeland conditions at latitudes above 30° N, dealing with significant annual fluctuations in the rainfall pattern, dictating, in turn, the quantity and quality of food availability, particularly in marginal goat production systems (GPSs). Under such a scenario, providing commercial grains and concentrates can be costly, making it difficult for most goat farmers to afford. Hence, the effective use of the rangeland biotic resources aligned with the amount of rainfall is key in determining the productivity of any production system, especially those with a dairy emphasis. We identified a compelling research opportunity focused on elucidating the key features that distinguish various dairy GPSs (i.e., DGPSs). Interestingly, DGPSs can be approached from the most traditional extensive system, resembling a more circular, less linear, more closed loop, mainly based on a circular economy approach and generally observed in developing economies, moving up to those less classical, highly industrialized, large-scale, linear-based dairy goat systems, mainly observed in developed economies. This review aims to emphasize the important role that goats and dairy goats play for many small-scale rural families worldwide, as well as to introduce a proposal for categorizing the main dairy goat production systems (DGPSs), using a multifactorial approach but emphasizing rainfall and nutritional supplementation level, as the focal categorization factors. The main DGPSs were divided into two metasystems based on available resources, each consisting of three production subsystems. In the first metasystem, the three subsystems have limited water, biotic, and economic resources, whose main economic rationality is based on reducing risk rather than maximizing outputs. In contrast, the three subsystems of the second metasystem usually have increased biotic, economic, and water resources, whose main emphasis involves maximizing product yield rather than reducing risk. The first metasystem involves DGPSs with a very limited or null nutritional supplementation: (a) subsistence, (b) extensive, and (c) agro-silvopastoral. The second metasystem includes those DGPSs with different levels of nutritional supplementation: (d) semi-extensive, (e) semi-intensive, and (f) intensive. There are numerous significant global initiatives focused on scientific collaboration and sharing information regarding nutrition, reproductive, and genetic technologies related to the safety and nutraceutical quality of goat milk and products while contextualized in different DGPSs. Hence, such scenarios should create additional opportunities for researchers, producers, policymakers, and development workers to come together and align interests and needs and exchange knowledge on effective goat farmer support strategies, environmental management, and consumer education. Undoubtedly, it is essential to reevaluate the DGPSs in the world since millions of producers and their families—most of them poor and marginalized—need this species, society needs their products, most of the worldwide arid and semi-arid lands need their recovery, and all of us should encourage the fulfillment of the sustainable development goals.
