1. Towards a Robotic Intrusion Prevention System: Combining Security and Safety in Cognitive Social Robots

Abstract

Social Robots need to be safe and reliable to share their space with humans. This paper reports on the first results of a research project that aims to create more safe and reliable, intelligent autonomous robots by investigating the implications and interactions between cybersecurity and safety. We propose creating a robotic intrusion prevention system (RIPS) that follows a novel approach to detect and mitigate intrusions in cognitive social robot systems and other cyber-physical systems. The RIPS detects threats at the robotic communication level and enables mitigation of the cyber-physical threats by using System Modes to define what part of the robotic system reduces or limits its functionality while the system is compromised. We demonstrate the validity of our approach by applying it to a cognitive architecture running in a real social robot that preserves the privacy and safety of humans while facing several cyber attack situations.

4. Bubble bursting jets are driven by the purely inertial collapse of gas cavities

Abstract

The analysis of numerical simulations describing the collapse of capillary cavities reveals that the jets originated from the bursting of bubbles are driven by the condition that the dimensionless liquid flow rate per unit length directed towards the axis of symmetry, $q_\infty$, remains nearly constant in time. This observation, which is justified in physical terms because liquid inertia prevents appreciable changes in $q_\infty$ during the short time scale characterizing the jet ejection process, together with the fact that bubble bursting jets are produced from the bottom of a conical cavity, justify the purely inertial scalings for the jet width and velocity found here, $r_{jet}\propto\sqrt{q_\infty\tau}$ and $v_{jet}\propto \sqrt{q_\infty/\tau}$, with $\tau$ indicating the dimensionless time after the jet is ejected, a result which notably differs from the common belief that the jet width and velocity follow the inertio-capillary scaling $r_{jet}\propto \tau^{2/3}$ and $v_{jet}\propto \tau^{-1/3}$. Our description reproduces the time evolution of the jet width and velocity for over three decades in time, obtaining good agreement with numerical simulations from the instant of jet inception until the jet width is comparable to that of the initial bubble., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. 5. On the jets ejected after the inertial collapse of cavities

Abstract

Motivated by the results in Gordillo and Blanco-Rodriguez, 'Bubble bursting jets are driven by the purely inertial collapse of gas cavities', \emph{Phys. Rev. Lett., Submitted} (2023) \cite{PRL2023}, where it is found that bubble bursting jets are driven by a purely inertial mechanism, here we present a study on the dynamics of the jets produced by the collapse of gas cavities of generic shape when the implosion is forced by a far field boundary condition expressing that the flow rate per unit length, $q_\infty$, remains constant in time. Making use of theory and of numerical simulations, we first analyze the case of a conical bubble with a half-opening angle $\beta$ when the value of $q_\infty$ is fixed to a constant, finding that this type of jets converge towards a purely inertial $\beta$-dependent self-similar solution of the equations in which the jet width and velocity are respectively given, in the limit $\beta\ll 1$, by $r_{jet}\approx 2.25\tan\beta\sqrt{q_\infty\tau}$ and $v_{jet}\approx 3 q_\infty/(2\tan\beta\sqrt{q_\infty\tau})$ respectively, with $\tau$ indicating the dimensionless time after the jet is ejected. For the case of parabolic cavities with a dimensionless radius of curvature at the plane of symmetry $r_c$ our theory predicts that $r_{jet}\propto \left(2 r_c\right)^{-1/2}\left(q_\infty \tau\right)^{3/4}$ and $v_{jet}\propto q_\infty \left(2r_c\right)^{1/2} \left(q_\infty\tau\right)^{-3/4}$, a result which is also in good agreement with numerical simulations. The present results might find applications in the description of the very fast jets, with velocities reaching up to $1000$ m s$^{-1}$, produced after a bubble cavitates very close to a wall and in the quantification of the so-called bazooka effect., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

6. Portable Multi-Hypothesis Monte Carlo Localization for Mobile Robots

Abstract

Self-localization is a fundamental capability that mobile robot navigation systems integrate to move from one point to another using a map. Thus, any enhancement in localization accuracy is crucial to perform delicate dexterity tasks. This paper describes a new location that maintains several populations of particles using the Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) algorithm, always choosing the best one as the sytems's output. As novelties, our work includes a multi-scale match matching algorithm to create new MCL populations and a metric to determine the most reliable. It also contributes the state-of-the-art implementations, enhancing recovery times from erroneous estimates or unknown initial positions. The proposed method is evaluated in ROS2 in a module fully integrated with Nav2 and compared with the current state-of-the-art Adaptive ACML solution, obtaining good accuracy and recovery times., Comment: Submission for ICRA 2023

Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the result of a complication of diabetes affecting the retina. It can cause blindness, if left undiagnosed and untreated. An ophthalmologist performs the diagnosis by screening each patient and analyzing the retinal lesions via ocular imaging. In practice, such analysis is time-consuming and cumbersome to perform. This paper presents a model for automatic DR classification on eye fundus images. The approach identifies the main ocular lesions related to DR and subsequently diagnoses the illness. The proposed method follows the same workflow as the clinicians, providing information that can be interpreted clinically to support the prediction. A subset of the kaggle EyePACS and the Messidor-2 datasets, labeled with ocular lesions, is made publicly available. The kaggle EyePACS subset is used as a training set and the Messidor-2 as a test set for lesions and DR classification models. For DR diagnosis, our model has an area-under-the-curve, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.948, 0.886, and 0.875, respectively, which competes with state-of-the-art approaches., Comment: 7 pages and 1 figure

9. PlanSys2: A Planning System Framework for ROS2

Abstract

Autonomous robots need to plan the tasks they carry out to fulfill their missions. The missions' increasing complexity does not let human designers anticipate all the possible situations, so traditional control systems based on state machines are not enough. This paper contains a description of the ROS2 Planning System (PlanSys2 in short), a framework for symbolic planning that incorporates novel approaches for execution on robots working in demanding environments. PlanSys2 aims to be the reference task planning framework in ROS2, the latest version of the {\em de facto} standard in robotics software development. Among its main features, it can be highlighted the optimized execution, based on Behavior Trees, of plans through a new actions auction protocol and its multi-robot planning capabilities. Abstract

PurposeTo describe the functional and anatomical outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy with epiretinal membrane and internal limiting membrane peel in eyes with and without ectopic inner foveal layers (EIFLs).MethodsIn this retrospective multicenter study, patients diagnosed with idiopathic epiretinal membranes who underwent pars plana vitrectomy with epiretinal membrane and internal limiting membrane peel were enrolled, with a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Preoperative and postoperative spectral domain optical coherence tomography scans were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated. The association of the EIFL and other spectral domain optical coherence tomography parameters with preoperative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was analyzed.ResultsOne hundred eleven eyes of 107 patients were included. Preoperatively, the EIFLs were present in 56 of 111 eyes (50.4%). The presence of EIFL was significantly associated with lower preoperative and postoperative BCVA (P < 0.001). Ectopic inner foveal layer thickness was negatively correlated with preoperative BCVA (r = 0.58, P < 0.001). Postoperatively, the EIFL persisted in 51 of 56 eyes (91%) with Stage 3 and 4 epiretinal membranes. Ectopic inner foveal layer thickness decreased significantly after surgery (P < 0.001), but postoperative EIFL thinning had no direct effect on postoperative change in BCVA. At 12 months from surgery, EIFL thickness maintained a significant negative correlation with BCVA (r = 0.55, P < 0.001).ConclusionThe presence of EIFL should be considered a negative prognostic factor for postoperative anatomical and functional recovery.

18. Giant photo-effect in proton transport through graphene membranes

Abstract

Graphene has recently been shown to be permeable to thermal protons, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms, which sparked interest in its use as a proton-conducting membrane in relevant technologies. However, the influence of light on proton permeation remains unknown. Here we report that proton transport through Pt-nanoparticle-decorated graphene can be enhanced strongly by illuminating it with visible light. Using electrical measurements and mass spectrometry, we find a photoresponsivity of 10^4 A W-1, which translates into a gain of 10^4 protons per photon with response times in the microsecond range. These characteristics are competitive with those of state-of-the-art photodetectors that are based on electron transport using silicon and novel two-dimensional materials. The photo-proton effect can be important for graphene's envisaged use in fuel cells and hydrogen isotope separation. Our observations can also be of interest for other applications such as light-induced water splitting, photocatalysis and novel photodetectors.

Abstract

Development of digital resources is difficult due to their particular complexity relying on pedagogical aspects. Another aspect is the lack of well-defined development processes, experiences documented, and standard methodologies to guide and organize game development. Added to this, there is no documented technique to ensure correct implementation of a competency in a videogame. This research proposes a Short Serious Game Development Process founded in Software Engineering paradigms and complemented by previous efforts on large scale development of digital learning resources. This paper focuses in a technique called Competency-Based Decomposition that achieves implementing a formal competency into a short serious game, with which the formal learning process will be complemented to improve the way students learn. Through a case study will be demonstrated its utility by implementing the process and the technique in the whole of mathematics competencies for sixth grade of elementary school in Mexico. The result of applying the proposed process for study case is a collection of video games that satisfactorily implements the competencies and its contents, its expected learning and its knowledge areas specified for sixth grade of elementary school in Mexico by the Ministry of Public Education.

Abstract

In two space dimensions and one time dimension a wave changes its shape even in the absence of a dispersive medium. However, this anomalous dispersive behavior in empty two-dimensional space does not occur if the wave dynamics is described by a linear homogeneous wave equation in two space dimensions and {\it two} time dimensions. Wave propagation in such a space can be realized in a three-dimensional anisotropic metamaterial in which one of the space dimensions has a negative permittivity and thus serves as an effective second time dimension. These results lead to a fundamental understanding and new approaches to ultrashort pulse shaping in nanostructures and metamaterials.

Abstract

A spacelike surface in four-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime through the lightcone has a meaningful lightlike normal vector field $\eta$. Several sufficient assumptions on such a surface with non-degenerate $\eta$-second fundamental form are established to prove that it must be a totally umbilical round sphere. With this aim, a new formula which relates the Gauss curvatures of the induced metric and of the $\eta$-second fundamental form is developed. Then, totally umbilical round spheres are characterized as the only compact spacelike surfaces through the lightcone such that its $\eta$-second fundamental form is non-degenerate and has constant Gauss curvature two. Another characterizations of totally umbilical round spheres in terms of the Gauss-Kronecker curvature of $\eta$ and the area of the $\eta$-second fundamental form are also given.

Abstract

Legionella longbeachae and Legionella pneumophila are the most common causative agents of Legionnaires' disease. While the clinical manifestations caused by both species are similar, species-specific differences exist in environmental niches, disease epidemiology, and genomic content. One such difference is the presence of a genomic locus predicted to encode a capsule. Here, we show that L. longbeachae indeed expresses a capsule in post-exponential growth phase as evidenced by electron microscopy analyses, and that capsule expression is abrogated when deleting a capsule transporter gene. Capsule purification and its analysis via HLPC revealed the presence of a highly anionic polysaccharide that is absent in the capsule mutant. The capsule is important for replication and virulence in vivo in a mouse model of infection and in the natural host Acanthamoeba castellanii. It has anti-phagocytic function when encountering innate immune cells such as human macrophages and it is involved in the low cytokine responses in mice and in human monocyte derived macrophages, thus dampening the innate immune response. Thus, the here characterized L. longbeachae capsule is a novel virulence factor, unique among the known Legionella species, which may aid L. longbeachae to survive in its specific niches and which partly confers L. longbeachae its unique infection characteristics. Author summary: Legionella longbeachae can cause a severe pneumonia, known as Legionnaires' disease. In Australia and New Zealand, L. longbeachae is the predominant species causing up to 50% of all infections due to Legionella. However, L. longbeachae virulence factors are nearly unknown. Here, we show that L. longbeachae expresses a capsule that is a major virulence factor of this pathogen as it is important for virulence in vivo in mice and in the environment in its natural host Acanthamoeba castellanii. It dampens the innate immune response in mice and human cells. Our study sheds light on an understudied environmental pathogen and identifies a new virulence feature of Legionellae. Abstract

We find the exact solution of graphene s carriers under electromagnetic radiation. To obtain such solution, we combine Floquet theory with a trial solution. Then the energy spectrum is obtained without using any approximation.
