Abstract

Reading motivation is a critical contributor to reading achievement and has the potential to influence its development. Educators, researchers, and evaluators need to select the best reading motivation scales for their research and classroom. The goals of this review were to identify a set of reading motivation student self-report scales used in research, examine the development and psychometric properties of each reading motivation scale, and compare scales on availability, reliability, age range, and motivation constructs measured. This article summarizes 16 current reading motivation scales. Findings suggest the need for more research regarding the multidimensionality of reading motivation and measures that could span early childhood to adolescence. 18. Development of Persistence among Uruguayan Adult Students

Abstract

In Uruguay, one constant concern for policy makers, authorities, teachers and administrators is student retention. Among adult learners who have returned to secondary school, dropping out of school is an even larger problem. However, there are several students that in spite of their problems and barriers continue studying and return to school. This study focuses on why some Uruguayan adult students attending a night school succeed, finish the school year and think about continuing with their education. These students previously dropped out of traditional education, then decided to re-enroll in education, and are now persisting to graduation. The aim of this study is to understand the reasons these adult students persist. Using interview study methodology, nineteen Uruguayan adult students from first and fourth year of adult secondary school were recruited. Participants were asked to describe their previous experiences with education, the reasons they returned to school and the reasons they persist. Participants revealed that having an explicit objective helps them stay focused and persist. Some common objectives they mentioned were to be a role-model for their children or to "be somebody in life." From the data gathered we can conclude that the students defined themselves as stop-outs, defined as students who drop out of education but always think of returning to it, more than dropouts. 19. Investigating the efficacy of different models for increasing underrepresented medical student and physician diversity.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review on the different models that people and organizations have used and are using to increase underrepresented medical student and physician diversity. People have tried for many years to understand and develop ways of increasing diversity in the workforce and medicine has been no different. After the abolition of affirmative action in California, there was a stark decline in the number of underrepresented minorities enrolled in public medical schools. With the new Affordable Care Act, there will be an unprecedented number of people needing healthcare in this country - many of whom will be from underserved communities. This literature review focuses on investigating different models utilized in increasing underrepresented minority enrollment, recruitment and retention through medical school. The effectiveness and outcomes of these different models are discussed, and recommendations are made based on the results of this literature review.

Abstract

RESUMEN El objetivo fue determinar la prevalencia de sífilis y características de comportamiento de los jóvenes indígenas del Paraguay en el 2016. Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo de corte transversal con muestro probabilístico estratificado bietapico, que incluyó a jóvenes indígenas de 15 a 18 años de cinco familias lingüísticas de Paraguay. Se utilizó un cuestionario estructurado y para el tamizaje de sífilis se utilizó una test rápido treponémico y para confirmar los resultados reactivos se realizó VDRL, considerando como resultado positivo si el test rápido era positivo + VDRL positivo a una dilución de 1:4 o mayor y si la VDRL era menor a 1:4 con TPHA positivo. Los resultados se expresan como medidas de tendencia central, dispersión y proporciones. Ingresaron al estudio 546 jóvenes de 15 a 18 años, el 67,03% era del sexo femenino. Se identificaron 36 casos de sífilis, que representa una prevalencia de 6,6% (IC95%: 4,7-9,0).
