Neuromodulation has been highlighted as a form of treatment of several pathologies, including those involving anxiety symptoms. Among the neuromodulatory options with the potential to improve mood changes, we highlight repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). rTMS is a viable therapeutical option for neuropsychiatric dysfunctions of high prevalence and is important for the understanding of pathological and neuropsychological adaptation processes. Even with this potential, and high relevance of intervention, we observe the scarcity of literature that covers this subject. The objective of this study was to carry out a survey of the current literature, using scientific databases for the last five years. We found 32 studies reporting the effects of rTMS on anxiety, 7 on anxiety disorders and 25 on anxiety symptoms as comorbidities of neurological or psychiatric disorders. This survey suggests the need for further studies using TMS for anxiety in order to seek strategies that minimize these anxiety effects on the quality of life of the victims of this disorder.Keywords: transcranial magnetic stimulation, anxiety disorders, review, treatment

Abstract

Faced with unresolved tensions between neutrino interaction measurements atfew-GeV neutrino energies, current experiments are forced to accept largesystematic uncertainties to cover discrepancies between their data and modelpredictions. In this paper, the widely used pion production model in GENIE iscompared to four MINERvA charged current pion production measurements usingNUISANCE. Tunings, ie, adjustments of model parameters, to help match GENIE toMINERvA and older bubble chamber data are presented here. We find thatscattering off nuclear targets as measured in MINERvA is not in good agreementwith scattering off nucleon (hydrogen or deuterium) targets in the bubblechamber data. An additional ad hoc correction for the low-$Q^2$ region, wherecollective effects are expected to be large, is also presented. While thesetunings and corrections improve the agreement of GENIE with the data, themodeling is imperfect. The development of these tunings within the NUISANCEframeworkallows for straightforward extensions to other neutrino eventgenerators and models, and allows omitting and including new data sets as theybecome available.

Abstract

Final-state kinematic imbalances are measured in mesonless production of ν_{μ}+A→μ^{-}+p+X in the MINERvA tracker. Initial- and final-state nuclear effects are probed using the direction of the μ^{-}-p transverse momentum imbalance and the initial-state momentum of the struck neutron. Differential cross sections are compared to predictions based on current approaches to medium modeling. These models underpredict the cross section at intermediate intranuclear momentum transfers that generally exceed the Fermi momenta. As neutrino interaction models need to correctly incorporate the effect of the nucleus in order to predict neutrino energy resolution in oscillation experiments, this result points to a region of phase space where additional cross section strength is needed in current models, and demonstrates a new technique that would be suitable for use in fine-grained liquid argon detectors where the effect of the nucleus may be even larger.

Abstract

We present double-differential measurements of antineutrino charged-current quasielastic scattering in the MINERvA detector. This study improves on a previous single-differential measurement by using updated reconstruction algorithms and interaction models and provides a complete description of observed muon kinematics in the form of a double-differential cross section with respect to muon transverse and longitudinal momentum. We include in our signal definition zero-meson final states arising from multinucleon interactions and from resonant pion production followed by pion absorption in the primary nucleus. We find that model agreement is considerably improved by a model tuned to MINERvA inclusive neutrino scattering data that incorporates nuclear effects such as weak nuclear screening and two-particle, two-hole enhancements.

Abstract

Neutrino induced coherent charged pion production on nuclei,$\overline{\nu}_\mu A\to\mu^\pm\pi^\mp A$, is a rare inelastic interaction inwhich the four-momentum squared transfered to the nucleus is nearly zero,leaving it intact. We identify such events in the scintillator of MINERvA byreconstructing |t| from the final state pion and muon momenta and by removingevents with evidence of energetic nuclear recoil or production of other finalstate particles. We measure the total neutrino and antineutrino cross sectionsas a function of neutrino energy between 2 and 20 GeV and measure fluxintegrated differential cross sections as a function of $Q^2$, $E_\pi$ and$\theta_\pi$. The $Q^2$ dependence and equality of the neutrino andanti-neutrino cross-sections at finite $Q^2$ provide a confirmation of Adler'sPCAC hypothesis.

Abstract

Single neutral pion production via muon antineutrino charged-current interactions in plastic scintillator (CH) is studied using the MINERvA detector exposed to the NuMI low-energy, wideband antineutrino beam at Fermilab. Measurement of this process constrains models of neutral pion production in nuclei, which is important because the neutral-current analog is a background for ν-e appearance oscillation experiments. The differential cross sections for π0 momentum and production angle, for events with a single observed π0 and no charged pions, are presented and compared to model predictions. These results comprise the first measurement of the π0 kinematics for this process.

Abstract

Background: This study aims to identify the changes in the fashion industry, during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically, within the context of online purchase of fashion products, the use of sportswear, the pondering moments before the purchase, and the importance of sustainability. Furthermore, we also consider sustainability as a fashion strategic factor and its impact in the decision-making process. Purpose: The main purpose is to understand if the type of products and the way they are purchased by the retail consumer have changed, and to assess if the level of importance granted to sustainability is significant, in particular, by evaluating the way COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the online purchase of fashion products, the use of sportswear, the pondering moments before the purchase, and the importance of sustainability. Furthermore, we evaluate if the level of importance granted to sustainability, in the decision-making process, is still the same. Study design/methodology/approach: Quantitative analysis was applied, through an observation data collection technique, using a survey by questionnaire. The sample is non-probabilistic, with the accidental and snowball sampling modalities. Findings/conclusions: the companies must define new strategies to answer their consumers' real needs, because we verify that consumer behaviour changed. It was verified that there was a growth in the amount of online shopping of fashion products, the use of sportswear increased, the level of pondering before buying expanded, and the increasing importance of sustainability became evident. Limitations/future research: A non-probabilistic sample was used, which prevents the possibility of extrapolating general conclusions.

Abstract

This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the ν μ charged current quasielastic (CCQE) cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ( p μ ) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ( θ μ ). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be ⟨ σ ⟩ = ( 0.83 ± 0.12 ) × 10 − 38 cm 2 . The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, M QE A , of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) p μ − cos θ μ distribution, the effective M QE A parameter was measured to be 1.2 6 + 0.21 − 0.18 GeV / c 2 ( 1.4 3 + 0.28 − 0.22 GeV / c 2 ).

Abstract

MINERvA presents a new analysis of neutrino induced quasielastic-like interactions in a hydrocarbon tracking target. We report a double-differential cross section using the muon transverse and longitudinal momentum. In addition, differential cross sections as a function of the square of the four-momentum transferred and the neutrino energy are calculated using a quasielastic hypothesis. Finally, an analysis of energy deposited near the interaction vertex is presented. These results are compared to modified genie predictions as well as a NuWro prediction. All results use a data set produced by 3.34×1020 protons on target creating a neutrino beam with a peak energy of approximately 3.5 GeV.

Abstract

We present double-differential measurements of antineutrino charged-current quasielastic scattering in the MINERvA detector. This study improves on a previous single-differential measurement by using updated reconstruction algorithms and interaction models and provides a complete description of observed muon kinematics in the form of a double-differential cross section with respect to muon transverse and longitudinal momentum. We include in our signal definition zero-meson final states arising from multinucleon interactions and from resonant pion production followed by pion absorption in the primary nucleus. We find that model agreement is considerably improved by a model tuned to MINERvA inclusive neutrino scattering data that incorporates nuclear effects such as weak nuclear screening and two-particle, two-hole enhancements.

Abstract

Final-state kinematic imbalances are measured in mesonless production of νμ+A→μ-+p+X in the MINERvA tracker. Initial- and final-state nuclear effects are probed using the direction of the μ - p transverse momentum imbalance and the initial-state momentum of the struck neutron. Differential cross sections are compared to predictions based on current approaches to medium modeling. These models underpredict the cross section at intermediate intranuclear momentum transfers that generally exceed the Fermi momenta. As neutrino interaction models need to correctly incorporate the effect of the nucleus in order to predict neutrino energy resolution in oscillation experiments, this result points to a region of phase space where additional cross section strength is needed in current models, and demonstrates a new technique that would be suitable for use in fine-grained liquid argon detectors where the effect of the nucleus may be even larger.

Abstract

Charged-current $\nu_{\mu}$ interactions on carbon, iron, and lead with a final state hadronic system of one or more protons with zero mesons are used to investigate the influence of the nuclear environment on quasielastic-like interactions. The transfered four-momentum squared to the target nucleus, $Q^2$, is reconstructed based on the kinematics of the leading proton, and differential cross sections versus $Q^2$ and the cross-section ratios of iron, lead and carbon to scintillator are measured for the first time in a single experiment. The measurements show a dependence on atomic number. While the quasielastic-like scattering on carbon is compatible with predictions, the trends exhibited by scattering on iron and lead favor a prediction with intranuclear rescattering of hadrons accounted for by a conventional particle cascade treatment. These measurements help discriminate between different models of both initial state nucleons and final state interactions used in the neutrino oscillation experiments.

Abstract

Neutral-current production of $K^{+}$ by atmospheric neutrinos is a background in searches for the proton decay $p \rightarrow K^{+} \bar{\nu}$. Reactions such as $\nu p \rightarrow \nu K^{+} \Lambda$ are indistinguishable from proton decays when the decay products of the $\Lambda$ are below detection threshold. Events with $K^{+}$ are identified in MINERvA by reconstructing the timing signature of a $K^{+}$ decay at rest. A sample of 201 neutrino-induced neutral-current $K^{+}$ events is used to measure differential cross sections with respect to the $K^{+}$ kinetic energy, and the non-$K^{+}$ hadronic visible energy. An excess of events at low hadronic visible energy is observed relative to the prediction of the NEUT event generator. Good agreement is observed with the cross section prediction of the GENIE generator. A search for photons from $\pi^{0}$ decay, which would veto a neutral-current $K^{+}$ event in a proton decay search, is performed, and a 2$\sigma$ deficit of detached photons is observed relative to the GENIE prediction.

Abstract

Analysing the functionality of electrical systems allows for an evaluation of the characteristics of different power sources over varying periods and enables the coordination of multiple units. This is crucial for assessing the effects of uncertainty on the system considering load and energy generation for the effectiveness of power system monitoring and smart scheduling and cost-effectiveness of electrical grid operation. This research introduces an approach for simulating the operation of an electrical grid considering different time scales based on economic and technical indices. First, a series of standard source load scenarios is established. Subsequently, multiple scenarios are produced to show the stochastic nature of renewable energy and demand and utilise the probability features of uncertain data. The system described in this paper shifts the power balance issue from a yearly scale to weekly and daily electricity balances based on different time scales. The performance of the stochastic simulation solution is significantly enhanced by effectively coordinating in different time periods. The total coal consumption, economic index, abandoned renewable energy, and the rate of abandoned renewable energy are all closely monitored to maintain a high level of accuracy in reflecting the system’s performance.

17. Detoxified Castor Seed Cake for Broilers

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the dietary detoxified castor seed cake (DCC) inclusion on broiler performance and carcass traits. Two hundred and fifty Cobb-500(r) broilers were distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design consisting of five treatments (dietary inclusion of 0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0% DCC) with five replicates of 10 birds each (five males and five females). Feed intake (FI), body weight gain (WG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were evaluated from one to 40 days of age. Carcass yield and the yields of the breast, leg (drumstick+thighs), and wings were determined when broilers were 40 days old. Live performance parameters were influenced by DCC dietary inclusion, and levels 2.00, 1.38, and 1.25% DCC impaired FI, WG, and FCR, respectively. Carcass and parts yields were not affected by dietary DCC inclusion. It was concluded that the addition of DCC levels up to 1.25% to broiler diets does not impair live performance or carcass traits.

Abstract

The T2K Collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to 3.01 x 10(20) protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, 205 +/- 17 (syst) events are expected to be detected while only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum, assuming three neutrino flavors and normal mass hierarchy yields a best-fit mixing angle sin(2) (theta(23)) = 0.514 +/- 0.082 and mass splitting vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = 2.44(-0.15)(+0.17) x 10(-3) eV(2)/c(4). Abstract

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different dietary crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME) levels on the performance, internal and external egg quality, and cloacal temperature of commercial layers reared in hot climate. In this trial, 100 commercial Hy-Line W-36 layers between 20 and 32 weeks of age were distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, consisting of two CP levels (15 e 18%) and two ME contents (2700 and 3100 kcal/kg) with five replicates per treatment and 10 birds per replicate. Performance (feed intake, egg production, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio), internal (Haugh units and albumen and yolk percentage) and external (eggshell % and thickness) egg quality parameters were evaluated. Cloacal temperature was measured in two birds per replicate at 8:00 h and 13:00 h. The diet containing 2700 kcal ME/kg promoted the best performance, whereas the worse performance observed in birds fed the diet with 3100 ME/kg was partially recovered when the diet contained 18% CP. Haugh units worsened as dietary CP level increased. The other external and internal egg quality parameters were not affected by dietary CP or ME levels. The cloacal temperature of birds fed 15% CP was lower in the morning and higher in the afternoon relative to those fed 18% CP, which temperature did not change during the day. It was concluded that dietary CP and ME levels influenced the performance and the body temperature of commercial layers.

Abstract

The Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) interaction, $\nu_{l} + n \rightarrow l^{-} + p$, is the dominant CC process at $E_\nu \sim 1$ GeV and contributes to the signal in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments operating at intermediate neutrino energies. This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the $\nu_{\mu}$ CCQE cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ($p_\mu$) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ($\theta_\mu$). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be $(0.83 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-38}\textrm{ cm}^{2}$ in good agreement with NEUT MC value of ${0.88 \times 10^{-38}} \textrm{ cm}^{2}$. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, $M_A^{QE}$, of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) $p_{\mu}cos\theta_\mu$ distribution, the effective $M_A^{QE}$ parameter was measured to be ${1.26^{+0.21}_{-0.18} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$ (${1.43^{+0.28}_{-0.22} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$).

Abstract

This study aimed at determining a specific classification of coefficients of variation in experiments with commercial layers. Coefficients of variation were collected from papers published in Brazilian journals between 2000 and 2009 for performance, internal egg quality, and eggshell quality parameters. The coefficients of variation of each parameter were classified as low, intermediate, high, and very high according to the ratio between the median and the pseudo-sigma. It was concluded that the parameters used in experiments with commercial layers have a specific classification of coefficients of variation, and that this must be considered to evaluate experimental accuracy.

Abstract

Framed by the consumer-brand relationship theory, this paper investigates the path from the brand-consumer behaviour interaction to the relationship durability and stability, through brand relationship quality. Specifically, it examines brand experience as an antecedent of brand love, and customer loyalty and satisfaction as outcomes in the retail setting. Based on 560 customers’ responses to a face-to-face questionnaire administered in a fashion brand retail store, research hypotheses were tested using a structural equation model. The findings suggest that brand experience influences brand love, with a higher incidence of sensory and affective dimensions. Brand love, in turn, influences customer loyalty, both directly and indirectly through customer satisfaction. This research contributes to the still understudied relation between brand experience and brand love in the retail context and to the need to understand the satisfaction-loyalty relation involving other variables as predictors. Nevertheless, results are limited to one specific retail fashion brand and generalizations should be taken carefully.

30. Gastroprotective effect of barbatusin and 3-beta-hydroxy-3-deoxibarbatusin, quinonoid diterpenes isolated from Plectranthus grandis, in ethanol-induced gastric lesions in mice.

Abstract

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Validate the popular use of Plectranthus grandis in gastric disorders through the active components. AIMS: Isolation of barbatusin (BB) and 3beta-hydroxy-3-deoxibarbatusin (BBOH), diterpenes from Plectranthus grandis, and evaluation of their gastroprotective effect and possible mechanisms of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Isolation and chemical characterization of diterpenes from Plectranthus grandis by chromatographic and spectroscopic methods and evaluation of gastroprotective action of the diterpenes through ethanol-induced gastric injury in mice model. It was evaluated the effect of capsazepine, indomethacin and the role of nitric oxide and K(ATP-) channels on the gastroprotective effect of BBOH and BB. Additionally it was measured the concentrations of gastric mucus, non-proteic-sulfhydryl groups and total thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances. RESULTS: Orally administered BBOH and BB at doses of 5 and 10mg/kg, markedly reduced the gastric lesions by 59 and 96%, and 32 and 76%, respectively, with superior results as compared to N-acetylcysteine (150 mg/kg, i.p.), reference compound that caused 85% lesion suppression. Although BBOH presented a higher gastroprotection than BB they act by similar mechanisms in relation to N-acetylcysteine, and prevent the depletion of gastric mucus, gastric mucosal non-proteic-sulfhydryl groups as well as the increase in thiobarbituric acid-reactive species. Moreover, the gastroprotective effect of BB was effectively blocked in mice pretreated with TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine, by the non-selective cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin, or by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor L-NAME but not by K(+)(ATP) channel inhibitor glibenclamide. In contrast, the gastroprotective effect of BBOH was blocked only by indomethacin and glibenclamide pretreatments. CONCLUSION: The protective role for BBOH and BB affording gastroprotection against gastric damage induced by ethanol indicates that these compounds contribute for the activity of Plectranthus species. Abstract

The tumoral form of schistosomiasis mansoni is rare and has not been described in the brain, in which schistosome eggs usually elicit a granulomatous inflammation. A 20-year-old Brazilian man had the tumoral form of schistosomiasis of the cerebellum which was treated surgically. Histological study of the excised cerebellar mass demonstrated a massive granulomatous reaction around Schistosoma mansoni eggs and massive necrotic areas. To our knowledge, this is the first case of schistosomiasis mansoni of the brain presenting as a posterior fossa mass with the characteristic necrotic granulomas.

Abstract

Quatro bubalinos e quatro bovinos adultos com fístulas ruminais foram utilizados com o objetivo de estudar os efeitos de diferentes níveis de fibra em detergente neutro na dieta sobre as características de fermentação ruminal. Foram avaliados concentração de amônia, produção de ácidos graxos voláteis (acético, propiônico e butírico) e pH do líquido ruminal. Os animais foram delineados em dois quadrados latinos (4x4) com arranjo fatorial 4x2, sendo quatro níveis crescentes de FDN na MS (54, 60, 66 e 72%) e duas espécies (bubalinos e bovinos). Cada subperíodo compreendeu 29 dias, sendo 13 de adaptação. Observou-se efeito da espécie sobre o pH ruminal, em que os bubalinos apresentaram valor médio (6,78) superior ao dos bovinos (6,58). Houve efeito da interação tempo x espécie, na concentração de amônia do líquido ruminal somente após 2 horas da alimentação da manhã, em que os bubalinos obtiveram média de 31,76 mg% e os bovinos, de 27,74 mg%. Os bubalinos mostraram menores valores de concentração média de ácidos graxos voláteis, ácido acético, ácido propiônico e ácido butírico (69,94; 51,31; e 6,12 mM) que os bovinos (77,96; 56,72; e 8,01 mM). Não houve diferença na concentração de ácido propiônico e na relação acético:propiônico, não sofrendo influência de nenhum dos parâmetros principais analisados.

34. Twenty-first century knowledge mapping on oral diseases and physical activity/exercise, trends, gaps, and future perspectives: a bibliometric review.

Abstract

Maintenance and improvement of an individual's overall well-being require a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses everything from oral health care to regular physical exercise. The notion that poor oral health can influence general health and athletic performance has sparked an interest in this relationship. This study offers an overview of relevant research and a knowledge map,and discusses publication metrics and key topics concerning the relationship between physical activity or exercise and oral diseases. We searched the Web of Science database for articles published in the 21st century that addressed the relationship between physical activity and oral diseases. Under the stipulated inclusion criteria, a rigorous selection process yielded 276 from 3,883 retrieved articles. The articles were classified by what was assessed as follows: occurrence of oral diseases in athletes or sports enthusiasts ( n  = 174); impact of physical activity or exercise on the oral cavity ( n  = 59); effects of oral changes on sports performance and physical fitness ( n  = 31); and the connection between oral health status, physical activity or exercise, and systemic conditions ( n  = 12). Orofacial trauma has received the most attention among all investigated oral diseases. However, there is a need for greater attention of dysfunctional habits that can contribute to premature tooth wear, as well as oral inflammatory diseases that can have systemic implications. Abstract

The açai juice contains high concentrations of phenolic compounds, including cyanidin-3-glucoside and others flavonoids. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of açai supplementation on healthy mandibular alveolar bone in male albino rats of the Wistar strain. 24 rats were divided into 3 groups, in which one group received a daily dose of saline solution and the other two groups were treated with daily doses of clarified açai juice for 14 or 28 days. After the experiment, hemimandibles were collected and analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), histological assessments, and micro-CT. Results showed changes in the integrity of the alveolar bone as seen in SEM, increased osteocyte density and higher collagen matrix area in the açai group compared to the control group as seen in histological analysis, and increased bone volume, trabecular thickness and number, and cortical bone as seen in micro-CT analysis. The space between bone trabeculae showed no difference among the groups. Abstract

Mercury (Hg) contamination on the Brazilian southeast coast has been highlighted, especially in relation to species of commercial importance. This study aimed to quantify the Hg concentration in species of mussels, fish, and crabs obtained from fishing colonies on the beaches of the west and south of the city of Rio de Janeiro, investigate the possible effect of seasonality, sex, and location sampling, and finally, the risk to consumer health in four different age groups. The difference between cooked and raw commercially available mussel samples was also verified. The main results highlight that the fish presented higher levels of Hg and that the mussel samples sold cooked presented lower levels of Hg when compared to the raw ones. For Micropogonias furnieri, Sardinella brasiliensis, and Callinectes spp., the season variable influenced Hg concentrations, while only for Merluccius merluccius was a difference between the sexes identified, with males having the highest values. Although Hg concentrations in animals were below the permitted limit, consumption of all species exceeded the monthly intake limit for this metal. For the hazard quotient (HQ) calculation, most species presented HQ > 1, especially when ingested by the child population. These results are fundamental for designing consumption strategies for these animals, in order to prioritize the acquisition of some species over others, depending on the location and/or season, for each age group, with the aim of maintaining seafood consumption with minimal risk to the population's health., (© 2024. Abstract

Mercury is an element with potential risk to fish and those who consume it. Thus, this study aimed to determine the levels of total mercury (THg), carry out a health risk assessment related to the consumption of the freshwater stingrays Potamotrygon motoro , and determine the physical and chemical properties of the water where stingrays occur. Stingrays of the species P. motoro were obtained from the Amazon River, and samples of the animals' musculature were collected to determine THg levels. Risk assessment was conducted using pre-established formulas of estimated monthly intake (EMI), maximum monthly intake rate (IRmm), and hazard quotient (HQ). Three population scenarios were evaluated, considering both sexes and differences between rural and urban areas. There was no relationship between weight and THg concentration nor between total length and THg concentration. Higher EMI values were observed in rural children; for the IRmm, male children had the lowest consumption levels. For the hazard quotient, there was a similarity between the three age groups when comparing the male and female sexes. In addition, the representatives of the rural area always had lower values than the urban area. Freshwater stingrays, like other elasmobranchs, can be crucial animal species because they act as sentinels in studies that assess harmful chemicals like mercury.

Petroleum activity and the dumping of domestic and industrial sewage are important sources of mercury (Hg) contamination in the aquatic environment. Thus, this article aimed to biomonitor the Hg concentration in fish, mussels, and swimming crabs of commercial importance in southeastern Brazil. The quantifications were carried out over a year to verify the influence of seasonality. Finally, a risk assessment was applied to identify whether the concentrations found could lead to long-term damage to the population. Our results indicate that the contaminations were higher in spring, summer, and winter than in autumn, mainly among fish and swimming crabs. The results of quantification in the animal and estimated monthly intake, despite being below the limit established nationally and internationally, were indicative of risk for these two animals after calculating the Hazard quotient. The highest risk values were attributed to the infant population. Based on the data generated by this work, the consumption of mussels is encouraged throughout the year, to the detriment of the other types of seafood studied, especially during summer, spring, and winter. Abstract

Guanabara Bay (GB) is a highly contaminated estuarine system and an important fishing area in Southeastern Brazil. In this regard, knowledge concerning the association of certain contaminants in seafood to abiotic factors and human health risk assessments is still understudied. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify nine toxic elements in highly consumed crabs, shrimp, and squid, and associate the results with abiotic factors. A human health risk assessment was also performed. Our findings indicate that crabs are the main bioaccumulators. Transparency and depth were noteworthy for all three taxonomic groups. In general, contaminant concentrations were below the limits established by different international agencies, except for As, which was higher than the Brazilian limit (1 mg kg -1 ). However, the Hazard Index identified risks to consumer health for the ingestion of seafood. 41. Incidental finding of paradental cyst in the maxillary anterior teeth during immediate implant placement.

Abstract

Paradental cyst is classified as an inflammatory cyst, and its occurrence in the anterior maxillary region is very rare. Several hypotheses have been put forward on the etiopathogenesis among which the formation of cyst secondary to inflammatory destruction of the periodontium and alveolar bone can be attributed to the present case. A 26-year-old male patient reported with loosened maxillary anterior teeth. After clinical and radiological examination, extraction of teeth #12, #11, #21, and #22 followed with immediate implant placement was planned. During extraction of #21, incidentally, a cyst was noted to be attached to the apices of #21 tooth. Implants were placed at #12, #11, and #22 sites, and socket of #21 was debrided thoroughly, followed by the placement of graft. A histopathological study of the cyst revealed it to be a paradental cyst. The patient was followed up for 6 months, and no recurrence of cystic lesion was noted. 42. Influence of Apical Diameter on Filling Material Extrusion during Retreatment - A Micro-CT and CBCT evaluation.

Abstract

Aim: To investigate whether foraminal widening performed at primary treatment has an effect on the amount of apically extruded obturator material during retreatment and to evaluate the sensitivity of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting extruded obturator material., Methods: Forty palatal roots of maxillary molars were selected based on micro-CT and divided into two groups (n=20): with foraminal widening (WE) and without foraminal widening (NE). To standardize the apical foramen, all specimens were instrumented to the foramen using the Protaper Next system, up to instrument X3. The WE group was instrumented to the foramen up to instrument X5, and the NE group was instrumented 1 mm lower. The canals were obturated 1 mm below the apical foramen with gutta-percha and AH Plus and stored for 7 days at 37 °C and 95% humidity. Roots were fixed in microtubes filled with 1.5% agar gel. The obturation material was removed with Reciproc R50. Scans of the teeth and agar were performed using micro-CT and CBCT. Comparison between groups and between methods was performed using Mann-Withney test (p ≤0.05)., Results: No statistical difference was found when comparing the extruded material between groups using micro-CT (p = 0.589) or CBCT (p = 0.953). CBCT measured a greater volume of extruded material than micro- CT (p = 0.0004)., Conclusion: Foraminal widening had no effect on the extrusion of filling material during retreatment. The CBCT favored the evaluation of apically extruded filling material.

Abstract

Children are highly vulnerable to chemical exposure. Thus, metal and metalloid in infant formulas are a concern, although studies in this regard are still relatively scarce. Thus, the presence of aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, tin, mercury, lead, and uranium was investigated in infant formulas marketed in Brazil by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the Target Hazard Quotients (THQ) and Target Cancer Risk (TCR) were calculated in to assess the potential risk of toxicity for children who consume these products continuously. Aluminum ranging from 0.432 ± 0.049 to 1.241 ± 0.113 mg·kg -1 , arsenic from 0.012 ± 0.009 to 0.034 ± 0.006 mg·kg -1 , and tin from 0.007 ± 0.003 to 0.095 ± 0.024 mg·kg -1 were the major elements, while cadmium and uranium were present at the lowest concentrations. According to the THQ, arsenic contents in infant formulas showed a THQ > 1, indicating potential health risk concerns for newborns or children. Minimal carcinogenic risks were observed for the elements considered carcinogenic. Metabolic and nutritional interactions are also discussed. This study indicates the need to improve infant formula surveillance concerning contamination by potentially toxic and carcinogenic elements.

44. Mother's education and family relations protect children from dental caries experience: a salutogenic approach.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify dental caries-protective factors among 5-year-old children using the salutogenic theory. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a small-sized municipality in the Southeast region of Brazil, with a representative sample of 247 children registered in preschool and their respective mothers. The data were collected through questionnaires administered to the mothers about the socioeconomic, behavioral, and biological aspects of the mother and children. Additionally, the collections included validated instruments concerning psychosocial aspects, such as a sense of coherence, resilience, family cohesion and religiosity, and intraoral examinations of the children through the decayed-missing-filled primary teeth (dmft) index. All examinations were performed by a trained and calibrated examiner. The non-adjusted and adjusted odds ratios (OR) and their respective confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using multiple logistic regression with a hierarchical model. Among the examined children, 41.7% were caries-free. In the final model, the chances of the absence of dental caries experience (dmft = 0) were greater in children with mothers who had higher education levels (> 8 years of study) (OR = 2.55 [95%CIi:1.42-4.59]) and those who lived in an environment of high family cohesion (OR = 3.66 [95%CI: 1.19-11.29]). The results indicated that mothers' level of education and family relationships are protective factors against dental caries in 5-year-old children, which overlapped with behavioral and biological factors.

45. Macrominerals and Trace Minerals in Commercial Infant Formulas Marketed in Brazil: Compliance With Established Minimum and Maximum Requirements, Label Statements, and Estimated Daily Intake.

Abstract

Infant formulas are the main nutritional source for infants when breastfeeding is not possible or recommended. The daily need for specific nutrients, such as essential minerals, in early stages of a child's life is high because of rapid infant growth and development, which impose metabolic flux increases on these pathways to support growth, physical activity, and defense against infections. In this context, this research aimed to determine macromineral and trace mineral contents in starting (phase 1) and follow-up (phase 2) infant formulas marketed in Brazil ( n = 30) by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, calculate estimated daily intakes, and compare them to reference values regarding adequate intake and tolerable upper intake levels. The highest concentrations of macrominerals were observed in Ca, K, P, and Na, and trace minerals in Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu. Certain homogeneity only to trace mineral contents was observed when analyzing inter-batch values from same manufacturers. In general, all phase 1 and phase 2 infant formula brands and batches met or exceeded Fe, Zn, Cu, Mo, and Se contents when compared to maximum limits established by Codex Alimentarius . In addition, Zn contents in eight phase 1 and in four phase 2 infant formulas were above the contents established by the tolerable upper intake level for children aged 0-6 and/or 7-12 months, respectively. Background and Aim: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters in the corpus callosum have been suggested to be a biomarker for prognostic outcomes in individuals with diffuse axonal injury (DAI). However, differences between the DTI parameters on moderate and severe trauma in DAI over time are still unclear. A secondary goal was to study the association between the changes in the DTI parameters, anxiety, and depressive scores in DAI over time., Methods: Twenty subjects were recruited from a neurological outpatient clinic and evaluated at 2, 6, and 12 months after the brain injury and compared to matched age and sex healthy controls regarding the DTI parameters in the corpus callosum. State-Trace Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory were used to assess psychiatric outcomes in the TBI group over time., Results: Differences were observed in the fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity of the genu, body, and splenium of the corpus callosum between DAI and controls (p < 0.02). Differences in both parameters in the genu of the corpus callosum were also detected between patients with moderate and severe DAI (p < 0.05). There was an increase in the mean diffusivity values and the fractional anisotropy decrease in the DAI group over time (p < 0.02). There was no significant correlation between changes in the fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity across the study and psychiatric outcomes in DAI., Conclusion: DTI parameters, specifically the mean diffusivity in the corpus callosum, may provide reliable characterization and quantification of differences determined by the brain injury severity. Background: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent pollutants routinely detected in aquatic ecosystems. It is, therefore, necessary to assess the link between deleterious marine biota PAH effects, especially in commercialized and consumed animals, environmental health status, and potential human health risks originating from the consumption of contaminated seafood products. Thus, this review seeks to verify the relationships of ecotoxicological studies in determining effect and safety concentrations on animals routinely consumed by humans., Methods: A total of 52 published studies between 2011 and 2021, indexed in three databases, were selected following the PICO methodology, and information on test animals, evaluated PAH, and endpoints were extracted., Results: Benzo(a)pyrene and phenanthrene were the most investigated PAHs in terms of biomarkers and test organisms, and mussels were the most evaluated bioindicator species, with an emphasis on reproductive responses. Furthermore, despite the apparent correlation between environmental PAH dynamics and effects on aquatic biota and human health, few assessments have been performed in a multidisciplinary manner to evaluate these three variables together., Conclusions: The links between human and environmental sciences must be strengthened to enable complete and realistic toxicity assessments as despite the application of seafood assessments, especially to mussels, in bioassays, the connection between toxicological animal responses and risks associated with their consumption is still understudied.

48. Influence of conservative endodontic access cavities on instrumentation of oval-shaped straight root canals.

Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the influence of the design of endodontic access cavities on the percentage of unprepared areas of canal walls and flexural fatigue of instruments activated by reciprocating movement in oval-shaped straight root canals of extracted teeth., Methodology: Forty-two mandibular incisors with oval canals were scanned by a microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) device for homogeneous selection and distribution of the samples. Then, the teeth were divided into two groups (n = 21) according to the design of access cavity being tested: ultraconservative endodontic access cavity (UltraAC) and traditional access cavity. The canals were accessed with the aid of a surgical microscope, instrumented with the WaveOne Gold Medium system and irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. The unprepared areas of the canal wall were analysed by overlaying images before and after instrumentation and expressed as percentages. micro-CT data were analysed using t-test, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests. The endodontic instruments used during instrumentation were subjected to static flexural fatigue testing using an artificial stainless steel canal with a 60° angle of curvature and a radius of 5 mm, located 5 mm from the tip of the instrument. The instruments were activated until fracture occurred, and the time in seconds for the fracture was recorded using a digital timer. The number of cycles to fracture was calculated and analysed statistically. For flexural fatigue data, an anova test complemented by a Tukey range test was used. The significance level of 5% was used for all analyses., Results: There was no significant difference between the groups related to unprepared areas by the instrument during canal preparation (p > .05). The difference in flexural fatigue resistance between the groups was not significant., Conclusion: The use of UltraAC did not interfere with the canal instrumentation of extracted mandibular incisors with straight and oval canals. 49. Impact of irrigation protocols with some chelators and mechanical agitation on intratubular decontamination.

Abstract

This study evaluated main canal and intratubular decontamination using different irrigation solutions followed by adjunctive agitation steps for infected root canals. Sixty-eight lower incisors were contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis and allocated to groups according to canal treatment (n = 10): G1, NaOCl followed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA); G2, a mixture of NaOCl with hydroxyethylidene bisphosphonate (HEBP); and G3, NaOCl followed by EDTA-T (EDTA with sodium lauryl ether sulfate). All three groups of teeth were agitated with passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) using saline solution, whereby G4, G5, and G6 were prepared as above, and agitation was performed using an XP-Endo Finisher instrument. Microbiological samples were collected from the root canals with paper points at three times: before and after chemomechanical preparation and after agitation. The colony-forming units (CFU)/mL count was determined, and bacterial intratubular viability was analyzed via confocal laser scanning microscopy using Live/Dead staining. Statistical analysis was performed using a Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn tests. A Friedman test was applied for colony-counting data (α = 0.05). CFU/mL counting indicated equally effective decontamination in the experimental groups (p > 0.05). According to microscopy images, the use of irrigation solutions followed by agitation with the XP-Endo Finisher yielded better results. Moreover, NaOCl+EDTA-T followed by XP-Endo Finisher resulted in significantly lower viability than in the PUI-activated groups (p < 0.05). The cervical and medium thirds of the specimens presented similar results. Overall, NaOCl+EDTA-T exhibited the best intratubular antibacterial activity, mainly for canals that were subsequently agitated using XP-Endo Finisher.

Abstract

Doxycycline (DOXY) is a second-generation tetracycline with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. A proinflammatory profile seems to predict the severity of depressive symptoms. In the present study, we aimed at determining whether the anti-inflammatory action of subantimicrobial-dose doxycycline (SDD) (DOXY, 10mg/kg), alone or combined with the antidepressant escitalopram (ESC), could revert lipopolysaccharide-induced depressive-like alterations in mice. Male Swiss mice received saline or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for ten consecutive days. From the 6 th day of LPS exposure, they were treated with DOXY 10 mg/kg, ESC 4 mg/kg, DOXY 10 mg/kg plus ESC 4 mg/kg (DOXY+ESC), or saline. On the 10 th day, we assessed behavioral despair (forced swimming test), anhedonia (sucrose preference test), brain oxidative stress markers, and inflammatory and protective pathways related to depression, such as NF-kB and phospho-CREB. Our results showed that DOXY alone or combined with ESC reduced hippocampal Iba-1 expression and interleukin (IL)-1β levels. Only DOXY+ESC successfully reversed the LPS-induced increase in NF-kBp65 expression and TNFα levels. DOXY caused a marked increase in the hippocampal expression of phospho-CREB and GSH concentrations. DOXY and DOXY+ESC showed a tendency to modulate the functional status of mitogen-activated kinase p42-44 (Phospho-p44/42 MAPK) and of the phosphorylated form of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β), revealing a protective profile against inflammation.
