Search

Nonlinear Josephson circuits play a crucial role in the growing landscape of quantum information and technologies. The typical circuits studied in this field consist of qubits, whose anharmonicity is much larger than their linewidth, and also of parametric amplifiers, which are engineered with linewidths of tens of MHz or more. The regime of small anharmonicity but also narrow linewidth, corresponding to the dynamics of a high-$Q$ Duffing oscillator, has not been extensively explored using Josephson cavities. Here, we use two-tone spectroscopy to study the susceptibility of a strongly driven high-$Q$ Josephson microwave cavity. Under blue-detuned driving, we observe a shift of the cavity susceptibility, analogous to the AC Stark effect in atomic physics. When applying a strong red-detuned drive, we observe the appearance of an additional idler mode above the bifurcation threshold with net external gain. Strong driving of the circuit leads to the appearance of two exceptional points and a level attraction between the quasi-modes of the driven cavity. Our results provide insights on the physics of driven nonlinear Josephson resonators and form a starting point for exploring topological physics in strongly-driven Kerr oscillators.

This paper presents a statistical analysis of federal highway bridges commonly found in Northeastern Brazil to develop a portfolio, or statistically representative characterization of bridges across the region. A detailed study of bridges under the supervision of the National Department of Infrastructure and Transportation is conducted and four representative bridge classes are defined: two of them consist of single-span bridges and the others are multi-span continuous bridges with non-integral or no abutments and different bridge decks. Discrete and continuous distributions describe random variables to consider their variability in the analyses. However, some parameters are defined as function of the random variables, since a strong correlation is observed. Future bridge assessment studies should use the geometries of this bridge portfolio to evaluate the regional impacts due to natural hazards, or furnish models for updating, among other applications., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Quantum control of electromagnetic fields was initially established in the optical domain and has been advanced to lower frequencies in the gigahertz range during the past decades extending quantum photonics to broader frequency regimes. In standard cryogenic systems, however, thermal decoherence prevents access to the quantum regime for photon frequencies below the gigahertz domain. Here, we engineer two superconducting LC circuits coupled by a photon-pressure interaction and demonstrate sideband cooling of a hot radio frequency (RF) circuit using a microwave cavity. Because of a substantially increased coupling strength, we obtain a large single-photon quantum cooperativity $\mathcal{C}_{\mathrm{q}0} \sim 1$ and reduce the thermal RF occupancy by 75% with less than one pump photon. For larger pump powers, the coupling rate exceeds the RF thermal decoherence rate by a factor of 3, and the RF circuit is cooled into the quantum ground state. Our results lay the foundation for RF quantum photonics.

The nonlinear, parametric coupling between two harmonic oscillators has been used in the field of optomechanics for breakthrough experiments regarding the control and detection of mechanical resonators. Although this type of interaction is an extremely versatile resource and not limited to coupling light fields to mechanical resonators, there have only been, very few reports of implementing it within other systems so far. Here, we present a device consisting of two superconducting LC circuits, parametrically coupled to each other by a magnetic flux-tunable photon-pressure interaction. We observe dynamical backaction between the two circuits, photon-pressure-induced transparency and absorption, and enter the parametric strong-coupling regime, enabling switchable and controllable coherent state transfer between the two modes. As result of the parametric interaction, we are also able to amplify and observe thermal current fluctuations in a radio-frequency LC circuit close to its quantum ground-state. Due to the high design flexibility and precision of superconducting circuits and the large single-photon coupling rate, our approach will enable new ways to control and detect radio-frequency photons and allow for experiments in parameter regimes not accessible to other platforms with photon-pressure interaction.

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is imaging ~9300 deg^2 of the celestial sphere in twelve optical bands using a dedicated 0.8 m robotic telescope, the T80-South, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. The telescope is equipped with a 9.2k by 9.2k e2v detector with 10 um pixels, resulting in a field-of-view of 2 deg^2 with a plate scale of 0.55"/pixel. The survey consists of four main subfields, which include two non-contiguous fields at high Galactic latitudes (8000 deg^2 at |b| > 30 deg) and two areas of the Galactic plane and bulge (for an additional 1300 deg^2). S-PLUS uses the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, which includes the 5 u, g, r, i, z broad-band filters and 7 narrow-band filters centered on prominent stellar spectral features: the Balmer jump/[OII], Ca H+K, H-delta, G-band, Mg b triplet, H-alpha, and the Ca triplet. S-PLUS delivers accurate photometric redshifts (delta_z/(1+z) = 0.02 or better) for galaxies with r < 20 AB mag and redshift < 0.5, thus producing a 3D map of the local Universe over a volume of more than 1 (Gpc/h)^3. The final S-PLUS catalogue will also enable the study of star formation and stellar populations in and around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, as well as searches for quasars, variable sources, and low-metallicity stars. In this paper we introduce the main characteristics of the survey, illustrated with science verification data highlighting the unique capabilities of S-PLUS. In recent years, the field of microwave optomechanics has emerged as leading platform for achieving quantum control of macroscopic mechanical objects. Implementations of microwave optomechanics to date have coupled microwave photons to mechanical resonators using a moving capacitance. While simple and effective, the capacitive scheme suffers from inherent and practical limitations on the maximum achievable coupling strength. Here, we experimentally implement a fundamentally different approach: flux-mediated optomechanical coupling. In this scheme, mechanical displacements modulate the flux in a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) that forms the inductor of a microwave resonant circuit. We demonstrate that this flux-mediated coupling can be tuned in-situ by the magnetic flux in the SQUID, enabling nanosecond flux tuning of the optomechanical coupling. Tuning the external in-plane magnetic transduction field, we observe a linear scaling of the single-photon coupling strength, reaching rates comparable to the current state-of-the-art. Finally, this linear scaling is predicted to overcome the limits of single-photon coupling rates in capacitive optomechanics, opening the door for a new generation of groundbreaking optomechanical experiments in the single-photon strong coupling regime.

N-body simulations have shown that a bar in a galaxy can be triggered by two processes: (1) by its own instabilities in the disk, or (2) by interactions with other galaxies. Both mechanisms have been widely studied. However, the literature has not shown measurements of the critical limits of the disk stability parameters (DSPs). We show measurements of those parameters through the whole evolution in isolated disk models and find that the initial rotation configuration of those models stays in the stable or unstable regime from the initial to the final evolution. Then we perturbed the isolated models to study the evolution of DSPs under perturbation. We find that the critical limits of DSPs are not much affected in barred models, but when the bar is triggered by a perturbation, the disk falls into the unstable regimen. We show in our models that a bar triggered by a light perturbation grows in two phases: first, the bar appears as a slow rotator, and then it evolves to be a fast rotator; second, when the perturbation is far from the target galaxy, the bar evolves from fast to slow rotator. We present a detailed spatial analysis of stellar populations based on long-slit optical spectra in a sample of eight luminous early-type galaxies selected from nearby sparse groups and pairs, three of them may be interacting with a galaxy of similar mass. We have measured luminosity-weighted averages of age, [M/H], [Fe/H], and [$\alpha$/Fe] to add empirical data relative to the influence of galaxy mass, environment, interaction, and AGN feedback in their formation and evolution. The stellar population of the individual galaxies were determined through the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT using semi-empirical simple stellar population models. Radial variations of luminosity-weighted means of age, [M/H], [Fe/H], and [$\alpha$/Fe] were measured up to half of the effective radius of each galaxy. We found trends between these values and the nuclear stellar velocity dispersion. There are also relations between the metallicity/age gradients and the velocity dispersion. Contributions of 1-4 Gyr old stellar populations were found in IC5328 and NGC6758 as well as 4-8 Gyr old ones in NGC5812. Extended gas is present in IC5328, NGC1052, NGC1209, and NGC6758, and the presence of a LINER is identified in all these galaxies. The regions up to one effective radius of all galaxies are dominated by $\alpha$-enhanced metal-rich old stellar populations likely due to rapid star formation episodes that induced efficient chemical enrichment. On average, the age and [$\alpha$/Fe] gradients are null and the [M/H] gradients are negative, although discordant cases were found. We found no correlation between the stellar population properties and the LINER presence as well as between the stellar properties and environment or gravitational interaction, suggesting that the influence of progenitor mass can-not be discarded in the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures

GMOS-IFU observational data were used to study the detailed two dimensional gas kinematics and morphological structures within the ~500x421 pc^2 of the active Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4501. We provide empirical evidences of possible outflowing material from the central zones of NGC 4501 to the observer. In addition, we performed a spectral synthesis and diagnostic diagram analysis to determine respectively the dominant stellar population in the inner disc of this galaxy and to unveil the actual nature of the central engine of NGC 4501. The principal finding of this work is that the central regions of NGC 4501 are dominated by non circular motions connected to probable outflows of matter from the nuclear regions of this galaxy. A predominant old stellar population inhabits the internal zones of NGC 4501 excluding the possibility of ongoing starburst activity in the central parsecs of this galaxy. The latter result is confirmed by the diagnostic diagram analysis that establishes a preponderant active galactic nucleus character for NGC 4501. These outcomes together provide a general description of the gas motion and the corresponding nuclear activity in the internal disc of NGC 4501 in an attempt to elucidate the possible relation among the central activity and the induced kinematic properties of this nearby galaxy., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, published in MNRAS

We examine the relation between oxygen abundances in the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) estimated from the optical emission lines through the strong-line method (the theoretical calibration of Storchi-Bergmann et al.(1998)), via the direct Te-method, and the central intersect abundances in the host galaxies determined from the radial abundance gradients. We found that the Te-method underestimates the oxygen abundances by up to ~2 dex (with average value of ~0.8 dex) compared to the abundances derived through the strong-line method. This confirms the existence of the so-called "temperature problem" in AGNs. We also found that the abundances in the centres of galaxies obtained from their spectra trough the strong-line method are close to or slightly lower than the central intersect abundances estimated from the radial abundance gradient both in AGNs and Star-forming galaxies. The oxygen abundance of the NLR is usually lower than the maximum attainable abundance in galaxies (~2 times the solar value). We investigate interaction effects on the dynamics and morphology of the galaxy pairs AM\,2058-381 and AM\,1228-260. This work is based on $r'$ images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. The luminosity ratio between the main (AM\,2058A) and secondary (AM\,2058B) components of the first pair is a factor of $\sim$ 5, while for the other pair, the main (AM\,1228A) component is 20 times more luminous than the secondary (AM\,1228B). The four galaxies have pseudo-bulges, with a S\'ersic index $n<2$. Their observed radial velocities profiles (RVPs) present several irregularities. The receding side of the RVP of AM\,2058A is displaced with respect to the velocity field model, while there is a strong evidence that AM\,2058B is a tumbling body, rotating along its major axis. The RVPs for AM\,1228A indicate a misalignment between the kinematic and photometric major axes. The RVP for AM\,1228B is quite perturbed, very likely due to the interaction with AM\,1228A. NFW halo parameters for AM\,2058A are similar to those of the Milky Way and M\,31. The halo mass of AM\,1228A is roughly 10\% that of AM\,2058A. The mass-to-light (M/L) of AM\,2058 agrees with the mean value derived for late-type spirals, while the low M/L for AM\,1228A may be due to the intense star formation ongoing in this galaxy., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper we derived oxygen abundance gradients from HII regions located in eleven galaxies in eight systems of close pairs. Long-slit spectra in the range 4400-7300A were obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spec- trograph at Gemini South (GMOS). Spatial profiles of oxygen abundance in the gaseous phase along galaxy disks were obtained using calibrations based on strong emission-lines (N2 and O3N2). We found oxygen gradients signifi- cantly flatter for all the studied galaxies than those in typical isolated spiral galaxies. Four objects in our sample, AM1219A, AM1256B, AM 2030A and AM2030B, show a clear break in the oxygen abundance at galactocentric radius R/R25 between 0.2 and 0.5. For AM1219A and AM1256B we found negative slopes for the inner gradients, and for AM2030B we found a positive one. In all these three cases they show a flatter behaviour to the outskirts of the galaxies. For AM2030A, we found a positive-slope outer gradient while the inner one is almost compatible with a flat behaviour. A decrease of star forma- tion efficiency in the zone that corresponds to the oxygen abundance gradient break for AM1219A and AM2030B was found. For the former, a minimum in the estimated metallicities was found very close to the break zone that could be associated with a corotation radius. On the other hand, AM1256B and AM2030A, present a SFR maximum but not an extreme oxygen abundance value. All the four interacting systems that show oxygen gradient breakes the extreme SFR values are located very close to break zones. Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities are common in astrophysical systems, ranging from jet black holes up to protoplanetary accretion disk. An astrophysical object with strong characteristics of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is Caraguejo Nebula, in which the material expansion was caused by the explosion of a supernova about 1000 years ago. This instability occurs at the boundary between two fluids of different densities when one of the fluids accelerated with respect to the other. In order to study this instability, we performed a simulation with the code ATHENA Eulerian mesh. For this simulation, we consider a square domain with periodic boundaries on the sides, and reflecting on the boundary of the top and bottom. The upper box is filled with a gas density {\rho}=1.0, pressure P1 = 1.0, adiabatic index {\gamma}=5/3, and velocity u1=0.03 in the x direction (to the right). The lower portion has a density {\rho}=2.0, the same pressure, velocity, and adiabatic index, only in the opposite direction to the left. Speed is defined as a sinusoidal function, which creates the initial disturbance. As a result, we observe the principle of instability and the formation of vortices, with well-defined ridges. The distinctness of the boundary between the material of high and low density is well preserved due to the relatively low diffusion algorithm. The accumulation of mass from the interaction process that forms the polar ring galaxies is a factor that favors the conditions necessary to trigger nonthermal nuclear activities.. This fact encouraged the chemical analysis of ten polar ring galaxies. In order to verify the presence of an active nucleus in these galaxias, we built diagnostic diagrams using lines H{\beta}, [OIII], [HI], H{\alpha}, [NII], and [SII] and classified the type of nuclear activity. For galaxies that do not show shock, the parameters N2 and O3N2 were also determined. From this sample, we identified seven galaxies with an active nucleus and three that behave as HII regions. One galaxy with an active nucleus was classified as Seyfert. Although our data do not provide a statistically significant sample, we can speculate that polar ring galaxies are a setting conducive to trigger non-thermal nuclear activities., Comment: v. 19, n. 34, nov.2013. We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions in the electron density of \ion{H}{ii} regions located in 7 systems of interacting galaxies. The data consist of long-slit spectra in the range 4400-7300 A, obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at Gemini South (GMOS). The electron density was determined using the ratio of emission lines [SII]6716/6731. Our results indicate that the electron density estimates obtained of HII regions from our sample of interacting galaxies are systematically higher than those derived for isolated galaxies. The mean electron density values of interacting galaxies are in the range of $N_{\rm e}=24-532$\,$ \rm cm^{-3}$, while those obtained for isolated galaxies are in the range of $N_{\rm e}=40-137\: \rm cm^{-3}$. Comparing the observed emission lines with predictions of photoionization models, we verified that almost all the \ion{H}{ii} regions of the galaxies AM\,1054A, AM\,2058B, and AM\,2306B, have emission lines excited by shock gas. For the remaining galaxies, only few HII regions has emission lines excited by shocks, such as in AM\,2322B (1 point), and AM\,2322A (4 points). No correlation is obtained between the presence of shocks and electron densities. Indeed, the highest electron density values found in our sample do not belong to the objects with gas shock excitation. We present an observational study of the interaction effect on the dynamics and morphology of the minor merger AM1219-430. This work is based on r' and g' images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. We detected a tidal tail in the main galaxy (AM1219A) and a bridge of material connecting the galaxies. In luminosity, AM1219A is about 3.8 times brighter than the secondary (AM1219B). The surface brightness profile of AM1219A was decomposed into bulge and disc components. The profile shows a light excess of ~ 53 % due to the contribution of star-forming regions, which is typical of starburst galaxies. On the other hand, the surface brightness profile of AM1219B shows a lens structure in addition to the bulge and disc. The scale lengths and central magnitudes of the disc structure of both galaxies agree with the average values derived for galaxies with no sign of ongoing interaction or disturbed morphology. The S\'ersic index (n<2), the effective and scale radii of the bulge of both galaxies are typical of pseudo-bulges. The rotation curve of AM1219A derived from the emission line of ionized gas is quite asymmetric, suggesting a gas perturbed by interaction. We explore all possible values of stellar and dark matter masses. The overall best-fitting solution for the mass distribution of AM1219A was found with M/L for bulge and disc of M/L_b=2.8_-0.4^+0.4 and M/L_d=2.4_-0.2^+0.3, respectively, and a Navarro, Frenk and White profile of M_200=2.0_-0.4^+0.5 x10^12 M_sun and c=16.0_-1.1^+1.2. Interactions between galaxies are very common. There are special kinds of interactions that produce systems called Polar Ring Galaxies (PRGs), composed by a lenticular, elliptical, or spiral host galaxy, surrounded by a ring of stars and gas, orbiting in an approximately polar plane. The present work aims to study AM2020-504, a PRG with an elliptical host galaxy, and a narrow and well defined ring, probably formed by accretion of material from a donor galaxy, collected by the host galaxy. Our observational study was based on BVRI broad band imagery as well as longslit spectroscopy in the wavelenght range 4100--8600\AA, performed at the 1.6m telescope at the Observat\'orio do Pico dos Dias (OPD), Brazil. We estimated a redshift of z= 0.01683, corresponding a heliocentric radial velocity of 5045 +/-23 km/s. The (B-R) color map shows that the ring is bluer than the host galaxy, indicating that the ring is a younger structure. Standard diagnostic diagrams were used to classify the main ionizing source of selected emission-line regions (nucleus, host galaxy and ring). It turns out that the ring regions are mainly ionized by massive stars while the nucleus presents AGN characteristics. Using two empirical methods, we found oxygen abundances for the HII regions located in the ring in the range 12+log(O/H)=8.3-8.8 dex, the presence of an oxygen gradient across the ring, and that AM2020-504 follows the metallicity-luminosity relation of spiral galaxies. These results support the accretion scenario for this object and rules out cold accretion as source for the HI gas in the polar ring.

We report first results of an investigation of the tidally disturbed galaxy system AM\,546-324, whose two principal galaxies 2MFGC 04711 and AM\,0546-324 (NED02) were previously classified as interacting doubles. This system was selected to study the interaction of ellipticals in a moderately dense environment. We provide spectral characteristics of the system and present an observational study of the interaction effects on the morphology, kinematics, and stellar population of these galaxies. The study is based on long-slit spectrophotometric data in the range of $\sim$ 4500-8000 $\AA$ obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spetrograph at Gemini South (GMOS-S). We have used the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT to investigate the star formation history of these galaxies. The Gemini/GMOS-S direct r-G0303 broad band pointing image was used to enhance and study fine morphological structures. The main absorption lines in the spectra were used to determine the radial velocity. Along the whole long-slit signal, the spectra of the Shadowy galaxy (discovered by us), 2MFGC 04711, and AM\,0546-324 (NED02) resemble that of an early-type galaxy. We estimated redshifts of z= 0.0696, z= 0.0693 and z= 0.0718, corresponding to heliocentric velocities of 20\,141 km s$^{-1}$, 20\,057 km s$^{-1}$, and 20\,754 km s$^{-1}$ for the Shadowy galaxy, 2MFGC 04711 and AM\,0546-324 (NED02), respectively. ...

We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions in the kinematics, stellar populations, and oxygen abundances of the components of the galaxy pair AM\,2322-821. A fairly symmetric rotation curve for the companion (AM\,2322B) galaxy with a deprojected velocity amplitude of 110 km s$^{-1}$ was obtained, and a dynamical mass of $ 1.1 - 1.3 \times 10^{10} M_{\sun}$ within a radius of 4 kpc was estimated using this deprojected velocity. Asymmetries in the radial velocity field were detected for the companion, very likely due the interaction between the galaxies. The interaction between the main and companion galaxies was modelled using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, with the result indicating that the current stage of the system would be about 90 Myr after perigalacticum. The spatial variation in the distribution of the stellar-population components in both galaxies was analysed using the stellar population synthesis code {\sc STARLIGHT}. The companion galaxy is dominated by a very young (t $ \leq 1\times10^{8}$ yr) population, with the fraction of this population to the total flux at $\lambda\, 5\,870\, \AA$, increasing outwards in the galaxy disc. On the other hand, the stellar population of AM\,2322A is heterogeneous along the slit positions observed. Spatial profiles of oxygen abundance in the gaseous phase were obtained using the diagnostic diagram R23 vs. [OIII]/[OII], where we compared the observed values with the ones obtained from photoionization models. Such gradients of oxygen abundance are significantly flatter for this pair of galaxies than in typical isolated spiral galaxies. This metallicity distribution is interpreted as the gradients having been destroyed by interaction-induced gas flows from the outer parts to the centre of the galaxy, Comment: accepted by MNRAS

We present an observational study about the effects of the interactions in the kinematics, stellar population and abundances of the components of the galaxy pair AM2306-721. Rotation curves for the main and companion galaxies were obtained, showing a deprojected velocity amplitude of 175 km/s and 185 km/s, respectively. The interaction between the main and companion galaxies was modeled using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, with the result indicating that the current stage of the merger would be about 250 Myr after perigalacticum. The spatial variation in the distribution of the stellar population components in both galaxies was analysed by fitting combinations of stellar population models of different age groups. The central region of main galaxy is dominated by an old (5-10 Gyr) population, while significant contributions from a young (200 Myr) and intermediate (1 Gyr) components are found in the disk, being enhanced in the direction of the tidal features. The stellar population of the companion galaxy is overall much younger, being dominated by components with 1 Gyr or less, quite widely spread over the whole disk. Spatial profiles of the oxygen abundance were obtained from the a grid of photoionization models using the R23 line ratio. The disk of the main galaxy shows a clear radial gradient, while the companion galaxy presents an oxygen abundance relatively homogeneous across the disk. The absence of an abundance gradient in the secondary galaxy is interpreted in terms of mixing by gas flows from the outer parts to the center of the galaxy due to the gravitational interaction with the more massive primary., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

The space velocity of a stellar black hole encodes the history of its formation and evolution. Here we measure the 3-dimensional motion of the microquasar GRS 1915+105, using a decade of astrometry with the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array, together with the published radial velocity. The velocity in the Galactic Plane deviates from circular rotation by 53-80 +_ 8 km/s, where the range covers any specific distance from 6-12 kpc. Perpendicular to the plane, the velocity is only 10 +_ 4 km/s. The peculiar velocity is minimized at a distance 9-10 kpc, and is then nearly in the radial direction towards the Galactic Center. We discuss mechanisms for the origin of the peculiar velocity, and conclude that it is most likely a consequence of Galactic velocity diffusion on this old binary, rather than the result of a supernova kick during the formation of the 14 Mo black hole. We show that the microquasar LSI+61303 is running away from its birth place in a young complex of massive stars. The supernova explosion that formed the compact object shot out the x-ray binary with a linear momentum of 430 +/- 140 Msun km/s, which is comparable to the linear momenta found in solitary runaway neutron stars and millisecond pulsars. The properties of the binary system and its runaway motion of 27 +/- 6 km/s imply that the natal supernova was asymmetric and that the upper limit for the mass that could have been suddenly ejected in the explosion is ~2 Msun. The initial mass of the progenitor star of the compact object that is inferred depends on whether the formation of massive stars in the parent stellar cluster was coeval or a sequential process., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. We present K-band imaging observations of ten Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) host galaxies. We compare their observed and absolute K magnitudes as well as their R-K colours with those of other distant sources detected in various optical, near-infrared, mid-infrared and submillimeter deep surveys. We find that the GRB host galaxies, most of them lying at 0.5

We have used the Hubble Space Telescope to measure the motion in the sky and compute the galactocentric orbit of the black hole X-ray binary GRO J1655-40. The system moves with a runaway space velocity of $112\pm 18$ km s$^{-1}$ in a highly eccentric ($e = 0.34\pm 0.05$) orbit. The black hole was formed in the disk at a distance greater than 3 kpc from the Galactic centre and must have been shot to such an eccentric orbit by the explosion of the progenitor star. The runaway linear momentum and kinetic energy of this black hole binary are comparable to those of solitary neutron stars and millisecond pulsars. We present VLT spectroscopic observations of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 990705 host galaxy and highlight the benefits provided by the prompt-phase features of GRBs to derive the redshifts of the latter. In the host spectrum, we indeed detect an emission feature which we attribute to the [OII] 3726/3729 Angstrom doublet and derive an unambiguous redshift z=0.8424+/-0.0002 for this galaxy. This is in full agreement with the value z~0.86+/-0.17 previously derived using a transient absorption edge discovered in the X-ray spectrum of GRB990705. This burst is therefore the first GRB for which a reliable redshift was derived from the prompt phase emission itself, as opposed to redshift determinations performed using putative host galaxy emission lines or intestellar absorption lines in the GRB afterglows. Deep and high resolution images of the host of GRB990705 with the HST/STIS camera reveal that the burst occured in a nearly face-on Sc spiral galaxy typical of disk-dominated systems at 0.75

Only a few of the dozen or so stellar-mass black holes have been observed away from the plane of the Galaxy$^1$. Those few could have been ejected from the plane as a result of a ``kick'' received during a supernova explosion, or they could be remnants of the population of massive stars formed in the early stages of evolution of the Galaxy. Determining their orbital motion should help to distinguish between these options. Here we report the transverse motion (in the plane of the sky) for the black hole X-ray nova XTE J1118+480 (refs 2-5), from which we derive a large space velocity. This X-ray binary has an eccentric orbit around the Galactic Centre, like most objects in the halo of the Galaxy, such as ancient stars and globular clusters. The properties of the system suggest that its age is comparable to or greater than the age of the Galactic disk. Only an extraordinary ``kick'' from a supernova could have launched the black hole into an orbit like this from a birth place in the disk of the Galaxy., Comment: 8 pages including 2 color figures.
