Abstract Background Physical activity and sleep are established modifiable lifestyle factors, but the optimal time of the day of these behaviours for health is unknown. This study examined the independent and joint associations of diurnal patterns of physical activity and sleep with all-cause mortality. Methods This prospective cohort study included 6,673 participants who have attended the accelerometer assessment in the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Diurnal patterns of accelerometer-measured physical activity and sleep were identified using K-means clustering analysis. All-cause mortality was ascertained from the accelerometer measurement to December 31, 2019 (median follow-up 6.8 years). Survey-weighted Cox proportional hazard models were performed to estimate the independent and joint associations of diurnal patterns of physical activity and sleep with all-cause mortality. Results Diurnal patterns identified were: early-morning (32.4%), midday (42.5%), and late-afternoon (25.1%) for physical activity; and irregular sleep (37.4%), morning lark (33.6%), and night owl (29.0%) for sleep. After adjusting for volume of physical activity, sleep duration and other potential covariates, the early-morning physical activity pattern (hazard ratio 1.36, 95% confidence interval 1.13–1.64) and irregular sleep pattern (1.42, 1.01–1.99) were independently associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality, compared with midday physical activity and morning lark sleep patterns, respectively. In addition, participants with the combined pattern of early-morning physical activity and irregular sleep had higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to those with midday physical activity combined with a morning lark sleep pattern (1.92, 1.33–2.78). Several sociodemographic differences were observed in the strength of these associations. Conclusions Wearable activity-rest monitoring data showed that peak physical activity in the early morning and irregular sleep diurnal patterns are associated with increased mortality risk, and the combination of these patterns further exaggerated the risk. Public health program should acknowledge that the diurnal patterns of physical activity and sleep, in addition to their duration and frequency, may play a crucial role in lifestyle-based health promotion and management strategies.

Malaria is increasingly diagnosed in urban centers across the Amazon Basin. In this study, we combined repeated prevalence surveys over a 4-year period of a household-based random sample of 2,774 persons with parasite genotyping to investigate the epidemiology of malaria in Mâncio Lima, the main urban transmission hotspot in Amazonian Brazil. We found that most malarial infections were asymptomatic and undetected by point-of-care microscopy. Our findings indicate that as malaria transmission decreases, the detection threshold of microscopy rises, resulting in more missed infections despite similar parasite densities estimated by molecular methods. We identified genetically highly diverse populations of Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum in the region; occasional shared lineages between urban and rural residents suggest cross-boundary propagation. The prevalence of low-density and asymptomatic infections poses a significant challenge for routine surveillance and the effectiveness of malaria control and elimination strategies in urbanized areas with readily accessible laboratory facilities.

ABSTRACT: Cattle lameness remains a significant concern, causing economic losses and compromising animal welfare. Claw horn lesions have been identified as a major cause of lameness in dairy cows, but their correlation with high-energy diets and ruminal acidosis remains unclear. Hence, the primary objective of this study was to assess the effects of a high-starch diet and a conventional diet on the rumen environment, acute-phase proteins, and metabolic alterations, with a particular focus on insulin resistance and the consequent implications for the histology of the hooves in Holstein steers. A total of 16 animals were divided into the high-starch (HS; 37% starch) and conventional (CON; 16.8% starch) groups. Glucose tolerance tests (GTT), blood analyses, rumen fluid analyses, and histological evaluations of the hoof tissue were conducted over a 102-d experimental period. The HS group showed a lower ruminal pH than the CON group, and with values indicating SARA. The plasma glucose and IGF-1 concentrations were higher in the HS group, suggesting an anabolic state. Both groups exhibited an increase in the insulin area under the curve (AUC) after the GTT on d 102. Histological analysis of the hooves showed a reduction in the length and width of the epidermal lamella in both groups. We found a significant negative correlation between the insulin AUC and the length and width of the epidermal lamella. Because both groups were similarly affected, the hypothesis that histological alterations were caused by the experimental diets still needs confirmation. Additionally, the development of SARA was not essential for the observed histological changes in the hoof. Further studies are warranted to thoroughly investigate the role of insulin and IGF-1 imbalances in claw health.

Abstract Agricultural production assessments are crucial for formulating strategies for closing yield gaps and enhancing production efficiencies. While in situ crop yield measurements can provide valuable and accurate information, such approaches are costly and lack scalability for large-scale assessments. Therefore, crop modeling and remote sensing (RS) technologies are essential for assessing crop conditions and predicting yields at larger scales. In this study, we combined RS and a crop growth model to assess phenology, evapotranspiration (ET), and yield dynamics at grid and sub-county scales in Kenya. We synthesized RS information from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Water Productivity Open-access portal (WaPOR) to retrieve sowing date information for driving the model simulations. The findings showed that grid-scale management information and progressive crop growth could be accurately derived, reducing the model output uncertainties. Performance assessment of the modeled phenology yielded satisfactory accuracies at the sub-county scale during two representative seasons. The agreement between the simulated ET and yield was improved with the combined RS-crop model approach relative to the crop model only, demonstrating the value of additional large-scale RS information. The proposed approach supports crop yield estimation in data-scarce environments and provides valuable insights for agricultural resource management enabling countermeasures, especially when shortages are perceived in advance, thus enhancing agricultural production.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and commonly associated with hepatic fibrosis or cirrhosis. This study aims to establish a rat model mimicking the progression from liver fibrosis to cirrhosis and subsequently to HCC using thioacetamide (TAA). We utilized male Lewis rats, treating them with intra-peritoneal injections of TAA. These rats received bi-weekly injections of either 200 mg/kg TAA or saline (as a control) over a period of 34 weeks. The development of cirrhosis and hepatocarcinogenesis was monitored through histopathological examinations, biochemical markers, and immunohistochemical analyses. Our results demonstrated that chronic TAA administration induced cirrhosis aggressive cholangiocarcinoma in addition to well-differentiated HCC, providing a model for early-stage, stage and a mixed liver cancer phenotype. This model is characterized by increased fibrosis, altered liver architecture, and increased hepatocyte proliferation. Biochemical analyses revealed significant alterations in liver function markers, including elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels, without affecting kidney function or causing significant weight loss or mortality in rats. This TAA-induced cirrhosis and mixed HCC rat model successfully replicates the clinical progression of human HCC, particularly in terms of liver function impairment and early-stage liver cancer characteristics. It serves as a valuable tool for future research on the mechanisms of antitumor drugs in tumor initiation and development.

The creation of vacancies and/or pores into two‐dimensional materials, like graphene and MXenes, has shown to increase their performance for sustainable applications. However, a simple and affordable method with controlled and tailorable vacancy concentration and/or pores size remains challenging. Herein, a simple and reproducible method is presented for controlled synthesis of Mo1.74CTz MXene with randomly distributed vacancies and pores, obtained from selective etching of both Ga and Cr in the Cr‐alloyed MAX‐phase like precursor Mo1.74Cr0.26Ga2C. Structural and compositional analysis of the 3D alloy show ≈13% Cr on the metal site, homogeneously distributed between different particles and within the atomic structure. After etching, it translates to Mo1.74CTz MXene, exhibiting defect‐rich sheets. Notably, the incorporation of Cr facilitates a shorter etching time with an improved yield compared to Mo2CTz. The Mo1.74CTz MXene displays excellent electrochemical properties, almost doubling the capacitance values (1152 F cm−3 and 297 F g−1 at 2 mV s−1 scan rate), compared to its pristine counterpart Mo2CTz. The presented method and obtained results suggest defect engineering of MXenes through precursor alloying as a pathway that can be generalized to other phases, to further improve their properties for various applications.

Abstract: This study aimed to estimate the population-based Parkinson disease prevalence, and to explore potentially associated factors and conditions. A population-based survey was conducted in Northern Peru. Symptoms compatible with Parkinson’s were defined using a validated Spanish questionnaire (≥ 42 points suggest Parkinson’s). Potential factors (e.g., age, sex, etc.) and clinical conditions (e.g., depressive symptoms, perceived stress, etc.) associated with Parkinson’s were assessed. In total, 1,609 subjects were included, mean age of participants was 48.2 (SD: 10.6), and 810 (50.3%) were women. Parkinson’s prevalence was 1.6% (95%CI: 1.0; 2.4). Those aged ≥ 55 years, and those who reported using wood as fuel for household cooking had a Parkinson’s prevalence from 3.5 to 4 times greater than those who did not. The presence of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, poor sleep quality, and cognitive impairment was more common among those with Parkinson’s, and quality of life in these participants was lower than those without Parkinson’s. In conclusion, 1.6% of the population shows symptoms compatible with Parkinson’s. Age and use of wood for household cooking were factors associated with Parkinson’s. Several mental health conditions and lower quality of life were more frequent among those with Parkinson’s. Appropriate strategies are required to detect, prevent, and manage Parkinson’s cases.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a worldwide health epidemic with a global occurrence of approximately 30%. The pathogenesis of MASLD is a complex, multisystem disorder driven by multiple factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and the environment. Patient heterogeneity presents challenges in developing MASLD therapeutics, creating patient cohorts for clinical trials, and optimizing therapeutic strategies for specific patient cohorts. Implementing pre-clinical experimental models for drug development creates a significant challenge as simple in vitro systems and animal models do not fully recapitulate critical steps in the pathogenesis and the complexity of MASLD progression. To address this, we implemented a precision medicine strategy that couples the use of our liver acinus microphysiology system (LAMPS) constructed with patient-derived primary cells. We investigated the MASLD-associated genetic variant patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3) rs738409 (I148M variant) in primary hepatocytes as it is associated with MASLD progression. We constructed the LAMPS with genotyped wild-type and variant PNPLA3 hepatocytes, together with key non-parenchymal cells, and quantified the reproducibility of the model. We altered media components to mimic blood chemistries, including insulin, glucose, free fatty acids, and immune-activating molecules to reflect normal fasting (NF), early metabolic syndrome (EMS), and late metabolic syndrome (LMS) conditions. Finally, we investigated the response to treatment with resmetirom, an approved drug for metabolic syndrome-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), the progressive form of MASLD. This study, using primary cells, serves as a benchmark for studies using “patient biomimetic twins” constructed with patient induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived liver cells using a panel of reproducible metrics. We observed increased steatosis, immune activation, stellate cell activation, and secretion of pro-fibrotic markers in the PNPLA3 GG variant compared to the wild-type CC LAMPS, consistent with the clinical characterization of this variant. We also observed greater resmetirom efficacy in the PNPLA3 wild-type CC LAMPS compared to the GG variant in multiple MASLD metrics, including steatosis, stellate cell activation, and the secretion of pro-fibrotic markers. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the capability of the LAMPS platform for the development of MASLD precision therapeutics, enrichment of patient cohorts for clinical trials, and optimization of therapeutic strategies for patient subgroups with different clinical traits and disease stages.

ABSTRACT Objective Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disease characterized by metabolic, reproductive, and psychological manifestations. Growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a cytokine associated with metabolic and inflammatory disorders. Metformin is commonly used for the treatment of PCOS. We investigated the relationship between GDF-15 levels and PCOS, the effect of metformin on GDF-15 levels, and potential biologic pathways related to GDF-15. Subjects and methods The study included 35 women with PCOS and 32 women without PCOS (controls). Both groups were compared in terms of GDF-15 levels. Additional analysis was conducted on samples from 22 women with PCOS who were treated with either metformin (n = 7) or placebo (n = 15), retrieved from a previous randomized, controlled trial. Levels of GDF-15 were measured using MILLIPLEX. The biologic pathways related to GDF-15 were evaluated using the databases STRING, SIGNOR, and Pathway Commons. The statistical analysis was conducted using the software SPSS. Results Levels of GDF-15 were higher in the PCOS group compared with the non-PCOS group (p = 0.039). Among women with PCOS, GDF-15 levels were higher in those treated with metformin compared with placebo (p = 0.007). The proteins related to GDF-15 overlapped between the databases, and a significant interaction was found between GDF-15 and proteins related to PCOS and its complications, including those related to estrogen response, oxidative stress, ovarian infertility, interleukin (IL)-18, IL-4, the ratio of advanced glycation end products to their receptor (AGE/RAGE), leptin, transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), adipogenesis, and insulin. Conclusion The findings of the present study suggest a relationship between GDF-15 and PCOS and a potential increase in GDF-15 levels with metformin treatment. An additional finding was that GDF-15 could be involved in biologic pathways related to PCOS complications.

Background: Postoperative sore throat is one of the main postoperative complaints in patients undergoing tonsillectomy. As the primary outcome, we aimed to determine whether endotracheal tube cuffs filled with alkalinized lidocaine are associated with a lower incidence of postoperative sore throat and anesthesia emergence phenomena in children undergoing tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy. We also assessed the potential additional benefits of IV dexamethasone in reducing postoperative laryngotracheal morbidity. Methods: This is a clinical prospective, randomized, controlled trial. Patients were randomly allocated to one of four groups, as follows: air – endotracheal tube cuff filled with air; air/dex – endotracheal tube cuff filled with air and intravenous dexamethasone; lido – endotracheal tube cuff filled with alkalinized lidocaine; and lido/dex – endotracheal tube cuff filled with alkalinized lidocaine and intravenous dexamethasone. Perioperative hemodynamic parameters and the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting, coughing and hoarseness were recorded. Postoperative sore throat was assessed in the postanesthetic care unit and 24 hours post tracheal extubation. Results: In total, 154 children aged 4–12 years, ASA physical status I or II, undergoing general anesthesia for elective tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy, were assessed for postoperative sore throat in this study. The incidence of postoperative sore throat 24 hours after tracheal extubation was significantly lower in the lido/dex group compared to groups air and air/dex (p = 0.01). However, no additional reduction in these symptoms was observed from the intravenous administration of dexamethasone when comparing the lido and lido/dex groups. Similarly, there were no differences among groups regarding perioperative hemodynamic variables or postoperative nausea and vomiting, coughing, and hoarseness during the study period. Conclusion: Intracuff alkalinized lidocaine, associated with intravenous dexamethasone, might be effective in reducing sore throat 24 hours post-tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy in children when compared to the use of air as the cuff insufflation media.

Background The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased fastest in low- and middle-income countries in the last decades. Together with this rising prevalence, pharmacological and surgical interventions for obesity have emerged. How many people need these treatments is unknown. We quantified the prevalence of people in need of pharmacological and surgical treatment for obesity in Peru between 2014 and 2022. Methods Repeated cross-sectional analysis of national health surveys in Peru was conducted. Eligibility for pharmacological treatment for obesity was: body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 or BMI ≥27 kg/m2 alongside type 2 diabetes or hypertension (self-reported). Eligibility for bariatric surgery were BMI ≥40 kg/m2 or BMI between 35 to 39.9 kg/m2 linked to weight-related health problems. We used Poisson regressions to identify associated factors with eligibility for obesity management. Results Across years, 260,131 people (mean age 44.0 and 54.5% were women) were studied, 66,629 (27.7%; 95% CI: 27.4% - 28.1%) were eligible for obesity medication, and 5,263 (2.5%; 95% CI: 2.4% - 2.6%) were eligible for bariatric surgery. Female sex, older age, higher socioeconomic level and study year were associated with higher probability of eligibility for both obesity medication and bariatric surgery. Conclusions Eligibility for obesity management has increased over time in Peru. There is a need to strengthen policies to tackle overweight and obesity in Peru, acknowledging that some individuals may benefit from pharmacological and surgical interventions.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

The antifouling booster biocides are frequently studied for toxic effects on the aquatic ecosystems. The present investigation proposes passive silicone rubber samplers as a collection method for biocides, once these methods can concentrate substances in aqueous matrices at very low levels. Through the passive sampler-water partition coefficient (Ksw) and the analyte chemical nature, we can optimize their extraction from the membrane to apply in the sample medium. We used the co-solvent method to determine the Ksw of three third-generation antifouling biocides, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, and dichlorooctylisothiazolinone (DCOIT), with log Ksw = 2.24, 4.01, and 2.38, respectively. Improving extraction also led to a recovery range higher than 70%, determinations were carried out by gas chromatography with an electron capture detector. Biocides concentration in seawater samples from Itaqui port (São Marcos Bay, northern Brazil) ranged from 0.058 to 0.72 µg L-1 for chlorothalonil, 0.001 to 0.008 µg L-1 for dichlofluanid, and 0.018 to 0.64 µg L-1 for DCOIT.

En América Latina las revueltas urbanas son cada vez más frecuentes y tienen importantes consecuencias. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las investigaciones existentes se basan en estudios de caso, lo cual impide obtener generalizaciones sobre sus causas, dinámicas y consecuencias. En este artículo discutimos la literatura sobre revueltas urbanas en América Latina y proponemos un marco conceptual para estudiarlas. Definimos las revueltas urbanas con base en cuatro atributos, las distinguimos de otras formas de política contenciosa y presentamos proposiciones sobre su desarrollo y dinámicas. Hipotetizamos que las revueltas urbanas son más probables cuando los sectores urbanos y populares no han sido completamente incluidos política, económica y culturalmente; cuando existen lazos débiles e inorgánicos entre élites políticas y ciudadanía; y cuando los sectores populares están débilmente articulados en asociaciones conectadas horizontalmente. Sin embargo, el momento y dinámica de las revueltas dependen de los factores precipitantes, las respuestas gubernamentales y las condiciones para la difusión de las protestas.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a significant impact on our daily lives, necessitating the rapid development of early diagnostic tools to mitigate the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreaks. In this context, biosensor technology has emerged as a highly promising strategy to address the challenges of low sensitivity, specificity, and high cost associated with clinical diagnosis. In this study, we present a novel and cost-effective approach for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 using miniaturized flexible carbon fiber (FCF) electrodes that are modified with immunoglobulin G (IgG). Our strategy take advantage of on the antigen-antibody interaction (IgG-SARS-CoV-2) and leverages the surface chemistry characteristics of FCF to achieve signal amplification. Under standard conditions, we achieved a remarkable detection limit of 0.16 pg mmL−1 for the SARS-CoV-2 RBD protein. Additionally, when analyzing human saliva samples, our biosensing approach demonstrated good agreement with RT-PCR results, specifically for patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. The sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy of our approach were approximately 93.3%.

Abstract Synchronous excitatory discharges from the entorhinal cortex (EC) to the dentate gyrus (DG) generate fast and prominent patterns in the hilar local field potential (LFP), called dentate spikes (DSs). As sharp-wave ripples in CA1, DSs are more likely to occur in quiet behavioral states, when memory consolidation is thought to take place. However, their functions in mnemonic processes are yet to be elucidated. The classification of DSs into types 1 or 2 is determined by their origin in the lateral or medial EC, as revealed by current source density (CSD) analysis, which requires recordings from linear probes with multiple electrodes spanning the DG layers. To allow the investigation of the functional role of each DS type in recordings obtained from single electrodes and tetrodes, which are abundant in the field, we developed an unsupervised method using Gaussian mixture models to classify such events based on their waveforms. Our classification approach achieved high accuracies (> 80%) when validated in 8 mice with DG laminar profiles. The average CSDs, waveforms, rates, and widths of the DS types obtained through our method closely resembled those derived from the CSD-based classification. As an example of application, we used the technique to analyze single-electrode LFPs from apolipoprotein (apo) E3 and apoE4 knock-in mice. We observed that the latter group, which is a model for Alzheimer’s disease, exhibited wider DSs of both types from a young age, with a larger effect size for DS type 2, likely reflecting early pathophysiological alterations in the EC-DG network, such as hyperactivity. In addition to the applicability of the method in expanding the study of DS types, our results show that their waveforms carry information about their origins, suggesting different underlying network dynamics and roles in memory processing.

Iron ore pellets are increasingly important in the production of sponge iron using reduction furnaces. The utilization of pellets present advantages over lump ores, increasing productivity, process stability and throughput. Compared to lump ores, pellets present higher resistance to mechanical degradation. Nevertheless, generation of fragments is still regarded as a challenge in operation. Fragments from pellets generated inside the furnace are known to have a strong influence on the properties of the reduction gas, creating operational problems such as increase in pressure drop, clustering and loss of efficiency. This work studies the influence of the mechanical degradation of iron ore pellets on the properties of the gas inside a reduction furnace. A numerical simulation methodology is proposed for the prediction of the relationship between the mechanical stressing of the pellet, the creation of fragments due to degradation and the influence of the fragments generated on the velocity and pressure fields of the reduction gas inside the furnace. The simulation methodology is applied to predict operation of an industrial MINIMOD MIDREX furnace. Results show that the proposed methodology presents great potential for the simulation of the reduction process giving useful insights about the behavior of key variables and how they relate to the presence of fragments created due to degradation.

Background and Aims: Chronic liver injury that results in cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease (ESLD) causes more than 1 million deaths annually worldwide. Although the impact of genetic factors on the severity of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) has been previously studied, their contribution to the development of ESLD remains largely unexplored. Methods: We genotyped 6 MASLD-associated polymorphisms in healthy (n = 123), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) (n = 145), MASLD-associated ESLD (n = 72), and ALD-associated ESLD (n = 57) cohorts and performed multinomial logistic regression to determine the combined contribution of genetic, demographic, and clinical factors to the progression of ESLD. Results: Distinct sets of factors are associated with the progression to ESLD. The PNPLA3 rs738409:G and TM6SF2 rs58542926:T alleles, body mass index (BMI), age, and female sex were positively associated with progression from a healthy state to MASH. The PNPLA3 rs738409:G allele, age, male sex, and having type 2 diabetes mellitus were positively associated, while BMI was negatively associated with progression from MASH to MASLD-associated ESLD. The PNPLA3 rs738409:G and GCKR rs780094:T alleles, age, and male sex were positively associated, while BMI was negatively associated with progression from a healthy state to ALD-associated ESLD. The findings indicate that the PNPLA3 rs738409:G allele increases susceptibility to ESLD regardless of etiology, the TM6SF2 rs58542926:T allele increases susceptibility to MASH, and the GCKR rs780094:T allele increases susceptibility to ALD-associated ESLD. Conclusion: The PNPLA3, TM6SF2, and GCKR minor alleles influence the progression of MASLD-associated or ALD-associated ESLD. Genotyping for these variants in MASLD and ALD patients can enhance risk assessment, prompting early interventions to prevent ESLD.

Chile has six species of Mecoptera, among which is Anabittacus iridipennis Kimmins, 1929. The genus Anabittacus Kimmins, 1929 (family Bittacidae) is monotypic and highly endemic to the southern part of the country. Here, we report two new localities for the rare A. iridipennis in southern Chile, specifically in the Los Ríos Region. Our new data extend the northern geographical limits of this species from the locality type. We provide a detailed diagnosis of this species and notes about the biology and the habitat of this enigmatic species.

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF, Tecfidera) is an oral drug utilized to treat relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). DMF treatment reduces disease activity in MS. Gastrointestinal discomfort is a common adverse effect of the treatment with DMF. This study aimed to investigate the effect of DMF administration in the gut draining lymph nodes cells of C57BL6/J female mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS. We have demonstrated that the treatment with DMF (7.5 mg/kg) significantly reduces the severity of EAE. This reduction of the severity is accompanied by the increase of both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms at the beginning of the treatment. As the treatment progressed, we observed an increasing number of regulatory Foxp3 negative CD4 T cells (Tr1), and anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-27, as well as the reduction of PGE2 level in the mesenteric lymph nodes of mice with EAE. We provide evidence that DMF induces a gradual anti-inflammatory response in the gut draining lymph nodes, which might contribute to the reduction of both intestinal discomfort and the inflammatory response of EAE. These findings indicate that the gut is the first microenvironment of action of DMF, which may contribute to its effects of reducing disease severity in MS patients.

Abstract Hyadesimyia clausa Bigot is a morphologically striking tachinid that inhabits the Sub‐Antarctic Ecoregion of the Magallanes Region in Chile and Tierra del Fuego province in Argentina. Much of the distributional information about this species is restricted to the Cape Horn islands, which have extreme environmental conditions, but the species' natural history, range limits, and habitat use have never been described or confirmed. Our goals were to describe the distributional limits of this sub‐Antarctic fly with the help of citizen science and use this information type to describe this tachinid's habitat use and potential biological interactions with nonvascular and vascular flora. We found that citizen science significantly increased our understanding of the extent of occurrence, expanding the known distributional range by 195 km to the north and 153 km to the west. On the contrary, the values for the area of occupancy were not significant, but the occupancy overlap between different records was very low. We confirmed that H. clausa's habitat uses peatlands and although we have not provided evidence of pollination or movement of spores, we hypothesized, that the walking activity of H. clausa could help move sperm from mosses and pollen from the flowers of vascular plants, so they could act as potential pollinators. Citizen science can reduce and eliminate some scientific knowledge shortfalls and propose new ecological questions that could increase our knowledge of extreme ecosystems.

Beyond the direct benefit that a transplanted organ provides to an individual recipient, the study of the transplant process has the potential to create a better understanding of the pathogenesis, etiology, progression and possible therapy for recurrence of disease after transplantation while at the same time providing insight into the original disease. Specific examples of this include: 1) recurrence of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) after kidney transplantation, 2) recurrent autoimmunity after pancreas transplantation, and 3) recurrence of disease after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) for cirrhosis related to progressive steatosis secondary to jejuno-ileal bypass (JIB) surgery. Our team has been studying these phenomena and their immunologic underpinnings, and we suggest that expanding the concept to other pathologic processes and/or transplanted organs that harbor the risk for recurrent disease may provide novel insight into the pathogenesis of a host of other disease processes that lead to organ failure.

Objective: To describe the use of nutritional supplements and blood status (hemogram, lipidogram, hepatic function, inflammatory markers, minerals, and homocysteine) in a sample of Brazilian T21 children with private health support before their first consultation with a T21 expert. Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study enrolled 102 participants. Brazilian families with a T21 member under 18 years old were contacted and those that consented answered a survey regarding socio-demographics and the use of nutritional supplements and shared the blood tests that their T21 members have collected for the first consultation with a T21 expert. Results: Frequencies and percentages were used to describe the variables. The most used supplements included vitamins (A, C and D), minerals (zinc and iron), omega-3, and antioxidants (curcumin). Hypothyroidism was observed in 56.9% of the participants. Hemogram alterations (increased hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and red cell distribution width, leukopenia, and lymphocytopenia), dyslipidemia, altered hepatic and inflammatory blood markers were frequently found. Conclusions: Nutritional supplements (mainly vitamins, minerals, omega-3 and antioxidants) are frequently used by Brazilian T21 children independently of professional counseling and/or supervision and should be a question to be raised during the clinical anamnesis since some of them may impact medical conduct. Moreover, many blood tests are altered in this population and clinicians should be aware of them in order to warrant an appropriate screening and the implementation of risk management measures as soon as possible and improve the general health of these persons.

Advances in nanotechnology have contributed to many innovative approaches in the forensic sciences, including the development of new techniques and protocols for latent fingermark detection. Among other nanomaterials, metal-based nanoparticles have been explored as suitable developers for fingermarks present on surfaces that challenge traditionally established methods. The present study explored, for the first time in the forensic science literature, the application of greenly synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for latent fingermark surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI MS) analysis. A leaf extract of a native plant from the Cerrado biome was used for green synthesis of the AgNPs, and their hydrodynamic diameter, polydispersity index (PdI), and Zeta potential values were evaluated. Latent fingermarks were produced by three distinct donors and treated with α-CHCA matrix or AgNP suspension and were further investigated using commercial matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)-TOF MS equipment in the m/z range of 100–1000. Characterization results of the AgNPs indicated an average hydrodynamic diameter of 25.94 ± 0.30 nm, a PdI of 0.659 ± 0.085, and a Zeta potential of −33.4 ± 2.6 mV. The silver ions detected showed a relative intensity at least 20× higher for greenly synthesized AgNPs than for AgNO3 suspension, which may be advantageous for the detection of molecular species, especially olefins, present in forensic traces. The AgNP-based SALDI MS approach for the analysis of latent fingermarks showed intense ions at m/z 106.9, 215.8, and 322.7, referring to silver cation species that have been reported as important internal calibrants. The detection of components from endogenous and exogenous sources in latent fingermarks was achieved using the present approach. Greenly synthesized AgNPs may offer a new cost-effective, eco-friendly, and easily scaled up method for application in the chemical analysis of fingermarks.

Abstract Recent theories of cortical organisation suggest features of function emerge from the spatial arrangement of brain regions. For example, association cortex is located furthest from systems involved in action and perception. Association cortex is also ‘interdigitated’ with adjacent regions having different patterns of functional connectivity. It is assumed that topographic properties, such as distance between regions, constrains their functions, however, we lack a formal description of how this occurs. Here we use variograms, a quantification of spatial autocorrelation, to profile how function changes with the distance between cortical regions. We find function changes with distance more gradually within sensory-motor cortex than association cortex. Importantly, systems within the same type of cortex (e.g., fronto-parietal and default mode networks) have similar profiles. Primary and association cortex, therefore, are differentiated by how function changes over space, emphasising the value of topographical features of a region when estimating its contribution to cognition and behaviour.

Green and roasted coffee oils are products rich in bioactive compounds, such as linoleic acid and the diterpenes cafestol and kahweol, being a potential ingredient for food and cosmetic industries. An overview of oil extraction techniques most applied for coffee beans and their influence on the oil composition is presented. Both green and roasted coffee oil extractions are highlighted. Pressing, Soxhlet, microwave, and supercritical fluid extraction were the most used techniques used for coffee oil extraction. Conventional Soxhlet is most used on a lab scale, while pressing is most used in industry. Supercritical fluid extraction has also been evaluated mainly due to the environmental approach. One of the highlighted activities in Brazilian agribusiness is the industrialization of oils due to their increasing use in the formulation of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and foods. Green coffee oil (raw bean) has desirable bioactive compounds, increasing the interest of private companies and research institutions in its extraction process to preserve the properties contained in the oils.

We suggest a new method of localization of partial discharges in high-power electrical systems. Ozone in a hydrogenerator is produced by chemical reactions induced by partial discharges in the stator region. The transport of ozone in an operating hydrogenerator is analyzed using a computational fluid dynamics model. The main aim of this work is to evaluate the ozone distribution in the generator radiators. Ozone sources are introduced into the stator model in different positions to analyze their effect on the measured values at the sensing points of radiators. Our results demonstrate a possibility of localization of partial discharges in hydrogenerator stator bars by ozone emission.

Abstract Background Little is known about the relationship between early life body size and occurrence of life-course multiple chronic diseases (multimorbidity). We aim to evaluate associations of birth weight, childhood body size, and their changes with the risks of chronic diseases and multimorbidity. Methods This prospective cohort study included 246,495 UK Biobank participants (aged 40–69 years) who reported birth weight and childhood body size at 10 years old. Birth weight was categorized into low, normal, and high; childhood body size was reported as being thinner, average, or plumper. Multimorbidity was defined as having two or more of 38 chronic conditions retrieved from inpatient hospital data until 31 December, 2020. The Cox regression and quasi-Poisson mixed effects models were used to estimate the associations. Results We show that 57,071 (23.2%) participants develop multimorbidity. Low birth weight (hazard ratio [HR] 1.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26–1.33), high birth weight (HR 1.02, 95% CI > 1.00–1.05), thinner (HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.18–1.23) and plumper body size (HR 1.06, 95% CI 1.04–1.09) are associated with higher risks of multimorbidity. A U-shaped relationship between birth weight and multimorbidity is observed. Changing to be thinner or plumper is associated with multimorbidity and many conditions, compared to changing to be average. Conclusions Low birth weight, being thinner and changing to have a thinner body size in childhood are associated with higher risks of developing multimorbidity and many chronic conditions in adulthood. Early monitoring and maintaining a normal body size in childhood could have life-course benefits for preventing multimorbidity above and beyond individual conditions.

Advanced optical neuromonitoring of cerebral hemodynamics with hybrid diffuse optical spectroscopy (DOS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) methods holds promise for non-invasive characterization of brain health in critically ill patients. However, the methods' fiber-coupled patient interfaces (probes) are challenging to apply in emergent clinical scenarios that require rapid and reproducible attachment to the head. To address this challenge, we developed a novel chassis-based optical probe design for DOS/DCS measurements and validated its measurement accuracy and reproducibility against conventional, manually held measurements of cerebral hemodynamics in pediatric swine (n = 20). The chassis-based probe design comprises a detachable fiber housing which snaps into a 3D-printed, circumferential chassis piece that is secured to the skin. To validate its reproducibility, eight measurement repetitions of cerebral tissue blood flow index (BFI), oxygen saturation (StO2), and oxy-, deoxy- and total hemoglobin concentration were acquired at the same demarcated measurement location for each pig. The probe was detached after each measurement. Of the eight measurements, four were acquired by placing the probe into a secured chassis, and four were visually aligned and manually held. We compared the absolute value and intra-subject coefficient of variation (CV) of chassis versus manual measurements. No significant differences were observed in either absolute value or CV between chassis and manual measurements (p > 0.05). However, the CV for BFI (mean ± SD: manual, 19.5% ± 9.6; chassis, 19.0% ± 10.8) was significantly higher than StO2 (manual, 5.8% ± 6.7; chassis, 6.6% ± 7.1) regardless of measurement methodology (p

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) affects over 360,000 adults in the United States each year with a 50-80% mortality prior to reaching medical care. Despite aggressive supportive care and targeted temperature management (TTM), half of adults do not live to hospital discharge and nearly one-third of survivors have significant neurologic injury. The current treatment approach following cardiac arrest resuscitation consists primarily of supportive care and possible TTM. While these current treatments are commonly used, mortality remains high, and survivors often develop lasting neurologic and cardiac sequela well after resuscitation. Hence, there is a critical need for further therapeutic development of adjunctive therapies. While select therapeutics have been experimentally investigated, one promising agent that has shown benefit is CO. While CO has traditionally been thought of as a cellular poison, there is both experimental and clinical evidence that demonstrate benefit and safety in ischemia with lower doses related to improved cardiac/neurologic outcomes. While CO is well known for its poisonous effects, CO is a generated physiologically in cells through the breakdown of heme oxygenase (HO) enzymes and has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. While CO has been studied in myocardial infarction itself, the role of CO in cardiac arrest and post-arrest care as a therapeutic is less defined. Currently, the standard of care for post-arrest patients consists primarily of supportive care and TTM. Despite current standard of care, the neurological prognosis following cardiac arrest and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) remains poor with patients often left with severe disability due to brain injury primarily affecting the cortex and hippocampus. Thus, investigations of novel therapies to mitigate post-arrest injury are clearly warranted. The primary objective of this proposed study is to combine our expertise in swine models of CO and cardiac arrest for future investigations on the cellular protective effects of low dose CO. We will combine our innovative multi-modal diagnostic platform to assess cerebral metabolism and changes in mitochondrial function in swine that undergo cardiac arrest with therapeutic application of CO.

Um método ativo de controle para equilibrara tensão dos capacitores flutuantes é apresentado para um inversor monofásico de ponte completa com grampeamento através de capacitores flutuantes (FC- Flying Capacitor). Com base nas equações dos capacitores flutuantes, é introduzido um método analítico que representa o equilíbrio de tensão natural. Nesta técnica, a razão cíclica dos interruptores é modificada para controlar a tensão dos capacitores flutuantes usando um controlador do tipo proporcional integral. Este método considera a direção da corrente de saída do inversor, visto que esta influência no equilíbrio de tensão dos capacitores. O controlador gera pequenas diferenças entre as razões cíclicas dos interruptores, alterando a carga dos capacitores. Resultados de simulação e experimentais mostram que o controle é eficiente, mantendo a tensão do capacitor regulada. Adicionalmente, são apresentados resultados experimentais do inversor aplicado a um sistema fotovoltaico conectado à rede elétrica.

Here we report the presence of the endemic and threatened primitive crane fly Tanyderus pictus Philippi, 1865, associated for the first time with the endangered Maulino Forest ecosystem in the Ñuble region, using high-quality photos under the citizen science model. We expanded the distribution of this species 182 km north of the next verified locality. We also reported T. pictus for the first time in the Chiloé Archipelago. Biogeography and conservation notes are discussed for this crane fly species.

ABSTRACTPrimary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), the most common types of cholestatic liver disease (CLD), result in enterohepatic obstruction, bile acid accumulation, and hepatotoxicity. The mechanisms by which hepatocytes respond to and cope with CLD remain largely unexplored. This study includes the characterization of hepatocytes isolated from explanted livers of patients with PBC and PSC. We examined the expression of hepatocyte-specific genes, intracellular bile acid (BA) levels, and oxidative stress in primary-human-hepatocytes (PHHs) isolated from explanted livers of patients with PBC and PSC and compared them with control normal human hepatocytes. Our findings provide valuable initial insights into the hepatocellular response to cholestasis in CLD and help support the use of PHHs as an experimental tool for these diseases.

Abstract Stroke is a recurrent and well-known cardiovascular event and a leading cause of death worldwide. We identified reliable epidemiological evidence of stroke in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and estimated the prevalence and incidence of stroke, overall and by sex, in that region. A systematic search in OVID (Medline, Embase and Global Health) and in the Latin America and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) until the end of 2020 was made for all cross-sectional or longitudinal studies estimating (or allowing the estimation of) the prevalence or incidence of stroke among individuals of the general population ≥ 18 years from LAC countries. No language restriction was applied. Studies were assessed for methodological quality and risk of bias. Pooled estimates were calculated using random effect meta-analysis as high heterogeneity was expected. A total of 31 papers for prevalence and 11 papers for incidence were included in the review for analysis. The overall pooled stroke prevalence was 32 (95% CI 26–38) per 1000 subjects and were similar among men (21; 95% CI 17–25) and women (20; 95% CI 16–23) per 1000 subjects. The overall pooled stroke incidence was 255 (95% CI 217–293) per 100 000 person-years, being higher in men (261; 95% CI 221–301) compared to women (217; 95% CI 184–250) per 100 000 person-years. Our results highlight the relevance of the prevalence and incidence of stroke in the LAC region. The estimates were similar in stroke prevalence by sex, but with higher incidence rates among males than females. Subgroup analyses highlight the need for standardized methodologies to obtain appropriate prevalence and incidence estimates at the population level in a region with a great burden of cardiovascular events.

In this paper, we present an unprecedented method based on Kohonen networks that is able to automatically recognize partial discharge (PD) classes from phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) diagrams with features of various simultaneous PD patterns. The PRPD diagrams were obtained from the stator windings of a real-world hydro-generator rotating machine. The proposed approach integrates classification probabilities into the Kohonen method, producing self-organizing probability maps (SOPMs). For building SOPMs, a group of PRPD diagrams, each containing a single PD pattern for training the Kohonen networks and single- and multiple-class-featured samples for obtaining final SOPMs, is used to calculate the probabilities of each Kohonen neuron to be associated with the various PD classes considered. At the end of this process, a self-organizing probability map is produced. Probabilities are calculated using distances, obtained in the space of features, between neurons and samples. The so-produced SOPM enables the effective classification of PRPD samples and provides the probability that a given PD sample is associated with a PD class. In this work, amplitude histograms are the features extracted from PRPDs maps. Our results demonstrate an average classification accuracy rate of approximately 90% for test samples.

Malignant skin cancers are common in emerging countries, with excessive sun exposure and genetic predispositions being the main causes. Variations in lighting and color, resulting from the diversity of devices and lighting conditions during image capture, pose a challenge for automated diagnosis through digital images. Deep learning techniques emerge as promising solutions to improve the accuracy of identifying malignant skin lesions. This work aims to investigate the impact of lighting and color correction methods on automated skin cancer diagnosis using deep learning architectures, focusing on the relevance of these characteristics for accuracy in identifying malignant skin cancer. The developed methodology includes steps for hair removal, lighting, and color correction, defining the region of interest, and classification using deep neural network architectures. We employed deep learning techniques such as LCDPNet, LLNeRF, and DSN for lighting and color correction, which still need to be tested in this context. The results emphasize the importance of image preprocessing, especially in lighting and color adjustments, where the best results show an accuracy increase of between 3% and 4%. We observed that different deep neural network architectures react variably to lighting and color corrections. Some architectures are more sensitive to variations in these characteristics, while others are more robust. Advanced lighting and color correction can thus significantly improve the accuracy of malignant skin cancer diagnosis.

In this paper, we develop a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) model in which the time-evolving electrical conductivity of the air ionization plasma in DC voltage needed-plate setup is represented. Maxwell’s equations are solved using the FDTD method, and the associated currents and discharge fields are computed over time and in three-dimensional space. The proposed model for the electrical conductivity is dependent on time, the applied DC voltage, and the gap length. The necessary data for developing the proposed model is obtained experimentally using a standard discharge needle, with its spherical tip measuring approximately 40 μm in diameter. Once high voltage is applied, a steady state is achieved. The electrical conductivity σ(t) and its associated parameters are then calculated using nonlinear equations proposed to reproduce the experimentally obtained plasma behavior in the full-wave FDTD model. Voltage ranges from 4 kV to 9 kV, and gap distances are between 4 mm and 8 mm.

In applications where large-order filters are needed, the computational load of adaptive filtering algorithms can become prohibitively expensive. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis of a selective partial-update least mean squares, named SPU-LMS-M-min, is developed. By employing the partial-update strategy for a non-normalized adaptive scheme, the designer can choose an appropriate number of update blocks considering a trade-off between convergence rate and computational complexity, which can result in a more than 40% reduction in the number of multiplications in some configurations compared to the traditional LMS algorithm. Based on the principle of minimum distortion, a selection criterion is proposed that is based on the input signal’s blocks with the lowest energy, whereas typical Selective Partial Update (SPU) algorithms use a selection criterion based on blocks with highest energy. Stochastic models are developed for the mean weights and mean and mean squared behaviour of the proposed algorithm, which are further extended to accommodate scenarios involving time-varying dynamics and suboptimal filter lengths. Simulation results show that the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental outcomes. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the proposed selection criterion can be easily extended to active noise cancellation algorithms as well as algorithms utilizing variable filter length. This allows for the reduction of computational costs for these algorithms without compromising their asymptotic performance.

Background: In recent decades, scientific production related to Emotional Regulation (ER) has increased significantly. Deficits in ER have been linked to various mental health problems. The aim of this work is to evaluate the Spanish adaptation of the Feel-Kj scale to the RASCH model. Method: Children from 9 to 16 years old took part of this study. One hundred and eighteen children between 9 and 16 years old and one hundred and fifteen from 13 to 16. The 254 participants were attending 25 schools located in de Valencian Community in Spain. Results: Both infit and outfit MNSQ statistics provided evidence for the construct validity of the FEEL-KJ questionnaire. The infit and outfit mean values (1.01 and 1.02, respectively) were close to the perfect fit value of 1. Conclusions: From these results it can be sensed that the FEEL-KJ will be a valid and reliable instrument to apply in the Spanish speaking population, although it is necessary to make some minor adjustments in terms of translation.

Introduction Endovascular therapy (EVT) has revolutionized acute stroke treatment, but large vessel recanalization does not always result in tissue‐level reperfusion. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is not routinely monitored during EVT. Here we aimed to leverage diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS), a novel transcranial optical imaging technique, to assess the relationship between microvascular CBF and post‐EVT outcomes. Methods Frontal lobe CBF was monitored by DCS in 40 patients undergoing EVT. Baseline CBF deficit was calculated as the percentage of CBF impairment on pre‐EVT CT perfusion. Microvascular reperfusion was calculated as the percentage increase in DCS‐derived CBF that occurred with recanalization. The adequacy of reperfusion was defined by persistent CBF deficit, calculated as: baseline CBF deficit ‐ microvascular reperfusion. Good functional outcome was defined as 90‐day modified Rankin Scale ≤2. Results 36 (of 40) patients achieved successful recanalization, in whom microvascular reperfusion in itself was not associated with infarct volume or functional outcome. However, patients with good functional outcomes had a smaller persistent CBF deficit (median: 1%; IQR: ‐11%–16%) than patients with poor outcomes (median: 28%; IQR: 2%–50%), p=0.02. Smaller persistent CBF deficit was also associated with smaller infarct volume (p=0.004). Multivariate models confirmed that persistent CBF deficit was independently associated with infarct volume and functional outcome. Conclusion CBF augmentation alone does not predict post‐EVT outcomes, but when microvascular reperfusion closely matches the baseline CBF deficit, patients experience favorable clinical and radiographic outcomes. By recognizing inadequate reperfusion, bedside CBF monitoring may provide opportunities to personalize post‐EVT care aimed at CBF optimization.

Background The long-term impact of elevated blood pressure on mortality outcomes has been recently revisited due to proposed changes in cut-offs for hypertension. This study aimed at assessing the association between high blood pressure levels and 10-year mortality using the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC-7) and the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) 2017 blood pressure guidelines. Methods Data analysis of the PERU MIGRANT Study, a prospective ongoing cohort, was used. The outcome of interest was 10-year all-cause mortality, and exposures were blood pressure categories according to the JNC-7 and ACC/AHA 2017 guidelines. Log-rank test, Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression models were used to assess the associations of interest controlling for confounders. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated. Results A total of 976 records, mean age of 60.4 (SD: 11.4), 513 (52.6%) women, were analyzed. Hypertension prevalence at baseline almost doubled from 16.0% (95% CI 13.7%–18.4%) to 31.3% (95% CI 28.4%–34.3%), using the JNC-7 and ACC/AHA 2017 definitions, respectively. Sixty-three (6.4%) participants died during the 10-year follow-up, equating to a mortality rate of 3.6 (95% CI 2.4–4.7) per 1000 person-years. Using JNC-7, and compared to those with normal blood pressure, those with pre-hypertension and hypertension had 2.1-fold and 5.1-fold increased risk of death, respectively. Similar mortality effect sizes were estimated using ACC/AHA 2017 for stage-1 and stage-2 hypertension. Conclusions Blood pressure levels under two different definitions increased the risk of 10-year all-cause mortality. Hypertension prevalence doubled using ACC/AHA 2017 compared to JNC-7. The choice of blood pressure cut-offs to classify hypertension categories need to be balanced against the patients benefit and the capacities of the health system to adequately handle a large proportion of new patients.

Bumblebees are key pollinators, but their global decline is being driven by factors such as invasive species. Bombus terrestris has invaded many countries, displacing and competing with native bumblebees for resources throughout many different habitats, which causes native populations to decline. In the Chilean highlands, Bombus funebris—a Chilean species under threat—shares its habitat with B. terrestris, suggesting that the two species could be competing for resources (e.g., flowers or habitats) within this ecosystem. However, an information gap in this regard prevents us from proposing conservation measures. Our goals were (1) to assess overlapping distribution between native and invasive Bombus species, (2) to determine any niche overlap in the use of flowers between the two bumblebee species, and (3) to document the predictors that influence their abundance. We conducted a survey in northern Chile between 2017 and 2019 with different latitudinal and altitudinal sampling points to count bumblebees and record their interaction with flowers, both in natural and perturbed habitats. We analyzed their overlapping distribution using the chi-square test and evaluated the use of floral resources and their overlap niche through an interaction network analysis. Predictors and bumblebee abundance were associated with a general linear mixed model. We found the distribution of both bumblebees overlapped by 94.3 %, whereas the overlap niche index (NO) for the common use of flowers was high between B. terrestris and B. funebris (NO = 0.78). The abundance of both bumblebee species was associated with the use of natural scrubland in the highlands. Our results suggest that both species are likely to have a competitive dynamic for floral resources in the high Andean scrubland. As such, we propose implementing an export ban on invasive bumblebee species, coordinating measures between bordering countries, removing any remaining B. terrestris populations, and restoring native flora to attract native pollinators and to provide and manage pollination services in the Chilean highlands.

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) causes illness and death in cetaceans worldwide; the CeMV strains circulating in the Southern Hemisphere are poorly known. We detected a pilot whale CeMV strain in 3 short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) stranded in Brazil during July–October 2020. Our results confirm this virus circulates in this species.

Background: Hydroxyethyl starches are colloids used in fluid therapy that may reduce volume infusion compared with crystalloids, but they can affect renal function in critical care patients. This study aims to assess renal effects of starches using renal biomarkers in the perioperative setting. Methods: This prospective, controlled, randomized study compared Hydroxyethyl starch 6% (HES) with Ringer's lactate (RL) in hysterectomy. Each episode of mean arterial pressure (MAP) below 60 mmHg guided the fluid replacement protocol. The RL group received 300 mL bolus of RL solution while the HES group received 150 mL of HES solution. All patients received RL (2 mL.kg−1.h−1) intraoperatively to replace insensible losses. Blood and urine samples were collected at three time points (preoperatively, 24 hours, and 40 days postoperatively) to assess urinary NGAL and KIM-1, as primary outcome, and other markers of renal function. Results: Seventy patients were randomized and 60 completed the study. The RL group received a higher crystalloid volume (1,277 ± 812.7 mL vs. 630.4 ± 310.2 mL; p = 0.0002) with a higher fluid balance (780 ± 720 mL vs. 430 ± 440 mL; p = 0.03) and fluid overload (11.7% ± 10.4% vs. 7.0% ± 6.3%; p = 0.04) compared to the HES group. NGAL and KIM-1 did not differ between groups at each time point, however both biomarkers increased 24 hours postoperatively and returned to preoperative levels after 40 days in both groups. Conclusion: HES did not increase renal biomarkers following open hysterectomy compared to RL. Moreover, HES provided better hemodynamic parameters using less volume, and reduced postoperative fluid balance and fluid overload.

Abstract A numerical model based on the finite-difference timedomain (FDTD) method is developed for calculating discharge currents and fields produced due air ionization between two electrodes. Electric conductivity σ of the ionized channel between two electrodes is calculated using non-linear equations, i.e., σ is obtained using functions of time. The functions for calculating σ are adapted and proposed in this work for each stage of the plasma formation and disrupting processes. The proposed numerical model is validated by making comparisons among the obtained FDTD results and experimental data published in literature. In order to perform the validation procedures, an experimental setup from literature is numerically reproduced using the proposed FDTD methodology.

Abstract The concept of Instrumented Smart Implant emerged as a leading research topic that aims to revolutionize the field of orthopaedic implantology. These implants have been designed incorporating biophysical therapeutic actuation, bone-implant interface sensing, implant-clinician communication and self-powering ability. The ultimate goal is to implement revist interface, controlled by clinicians/surgeons without troubling the quotidian activities of patients. Developing such high-performance technologies is of utmost importance, as bone replacements are among the most performed surgeries worldwide and implant failure rates can still exceed 10%. In this review paper, an overview to the major breakthroughs carried out in the scope of multifunctional smart bone implants is provided. One can conclude that many challenges must be overcome to successfully develop them as revision-free implants, but their many strengths highlight a huge potential to effectively establish a new generation of high-sophisticated biodevices.

Causality detection methods are valuable tools for detecting causal links in complex systems. The efficiency of continuity scaling (CS) and the convergent cross sorting (CSS) methods to detect causality was analysed. Usefulness and limitations of both methods in their application to simulated and real-world time series was explored under different scenarios. We find that CS is more robust and efficient than the CSS method for all simulated systems, even when increasing noise levels were considered. Both methods were not able to infer causality when time series with a marked difference in their main frequencies were analysed. Minimum time-series length required for the detection of a causal link depends on intrinsic system dynamics and on the method selected to detect it. Using simulated time series, only the CS method was capable to detect bidirectional causality. Causality detection, using the CS method, should at least include: (i) causality strength convergence analysis, (ii) statistical tests of significance, (iii) time-series standardization, and (iv) causality strength ratios as a strength indicator of relative causality between systems. Causality cannot be detected by either method in simulated time series that exhibit generalized synchronization.

Abstract Spintherobolus papilliferus is an endangered characid endemic of the Atlantic Rainforest, known from sparse locations in the upper rio Tietê basin around the metropolitan area of São Paulo city, and from an affluent of rio Itapanhaú, a coastal stream in Bertioga, São Paulo State. In 2020, S. papilliferus was sampled from the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin in Juquitiba, São Paulo State, representing a new distributional record. We compared 17 morphometric and six meristic characters from all specimens with data from the rios Tietê and Itapanhaú. An overlap in the morphological data from the three populations was detected, except for five measure whose values are lower in rio Ribeira de Iguape. MANOVA and LDA revealed that this population differs significantly from the other two, showing shallower body and caudal peduncle, among other features. These morphological differences may be due to environmental selective pressures since rio Ribeira de Iguape drainage is marked by fast waters which can influence the shape of fish bodies over time. DNA-barcoding of all Spintherobolus species corroborate that the rio Ribeira de Iguape population belongs to S. papilliferus. We also present a hypothesis for the disjunct distribution of S. papilliferus involving headwater capture and discuss the implications for the conservation of this endangered species.
