Abstract

The exponential growth of astronomical literature poses significant challenges for researchers navigating and synthesizing general insights or even domain-specific knowledge. We present Pathfinder, a machine learning framework designed to enable literature review and knowledge discovery in astronomy, focusing on semantic searching with natural language instead of syntactic searches with keywords. Utilizing state-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) and a corpus of 350,000 peer-reviewed papers from the Astrophysics Data System (ADS), Pathfinder offers an innovative approach to scientific inquiry and literature exploration. Our framework couples advanced retrieval techniques with LLM-based synthesis to search astronomical literature by semantic context as a complement to currently existing methods that use keywords or citation graphs. It addresses complexities of jargon, named entities, and temporal aspects through time-based and citation-based weighting schemes. We demonstrate the tool's versatility through case studies, showcasing its application in various research scenarios. The system's performance is evaluated using custom benchmarks, including single-paper and multi-paper tasks. Beyond literature review, Pathfinder offers unique capabilities for reformatting answers in ways that are accessible to various audiences (e.g. in a different language or as simplified text), visualizing research landscapes, and tracking the impact of observatories and methodologies. 7. Zero- and Few-Shots Knowledge Graph Triplet Extraction with Large Language Models

Abstract

In this work, we tested the Triplet Extraction (TE) capabilities of a variety of Large Language Models (LLMs) of different sizes in the Zero- and Few-Shots settings. In detail, we proposed a pipeline that dynamically gathers contextual information from a Knowledge Base (KB), both in the form of context triplets and of (sentence, triplets) pairs as examples, and provides it to the LLM through a prompt. The additional context allowed the LLMs to be competitive with all the older fully trained baselines based on the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) Network architecture. We further conducted a detailed analysis of the quality of the gathered KB context, finding it to be strongly correlated with the final TE performance of the model. In contrast, the size of the model appeared to only logarithmically improve the TE capabilities of the LLMs.

8. A volume averaging approach to the interfacial force in homogeneous bubbly flows with monodisperse bubbles

Abstract

The mathematical up-scaling of gas-liquid bubbly flows was carried out under the framework of the volume averaging theory. A two-fluid model and its associated closure problem were deduced. The closure problem was solved for a case study: a liquid flow past an assembly of homogeneous and monodisperse distorted bubbles. To this end, a cylindrical unit cells with concentric bubbles was used as approach of a representative elementary volume. The following conditions were evaluated: 0 < Re <= 675, 0 < {\epsilon}g <= 0.2, 7.15 x 10-9 <= We <= 3.96 and Mo = 2.55 x 10-11. The interfacial force closure was analyzed in terms of the ratio between the interfacial force for bubbly flow and that existing for a single bubble with the equivalent Re (in an unbounded liquid). It was found that, for creeping regime (0.001 <= Re <= 0.1), the ratio between drag coefficients increases as {\epsilon}g increases independently of Re. For intermediate and inertial regimes (1 <= Re <= 650), the ratio also increases as {\epsilon}g increases; however, two different trends were observed with respect to Re: the ratio decreases for the intermediate regime (1 <= Re <= 50) and increases for the inertial regime (50 < Re <= 650). A transition point around Re = 50 was found, which could be related to the boundary layer formation. Similar trends with respect to existing data from direct numerical simulations of bubbly flows were obtained, showing that this approach represents a good alternative, in terms of computing efforts, to obtain closure laws for two-phase flow modeling.

Abstract

Objective: To describe the geographical location of public health programs offered by public and private institutions providing health services in four Colombian cities. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study based on information from the Ministry of Health of institutions that provide public health programs. Results: More private than public institutions offer public health programs, but the former are concentrated on the population and zones with better socioeconomic conditions. In contrast, poor population depends almost exclusively on public sector institutions. Conclusion: In a competitive market system, population and city zones are segmented according to their socioeconomic level, and it is not attractive for the private sector to provide public health services to poorer populations.

Abstract

Microsporum canis is a dermatophyte that mainly affects dogs and cats. However, it can be transmitted to humans by direct contact. This makes it one of the most frequent causative agents of dermatophytosis in humans, reflecting the frequent human close relationships with pets. Conventional treatment relies on antifungal pharmacological agents. However, errors in application have led to the occurrence of fungal resistance and toxic effects. Consequently, new therapeutic alternatives are needed for M. canis infections. Plant extracts have been explored as phytotherapeutics for the treatment of dermatophyte infections, which prompted an attempt to apply extracts of the ethnopharmacologically important plants Artemisia ludoviciana and Cordia boissieri.

Abstract

Riolozatrione (RZ) is a diterpenoid compound isolated from a dichloromethane extract of the Jatropha dioica root. This compound has been shown to possess moderate antiherpetic activity in vitro. However, because of the poor solubility of this compound in aqueous vehicles, generating a stable formulation for potential use in the treatment of infection is challenging. The aim of this work was to optimize and physio-chemically characterize Eudragit® L100-55-based polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with RZ (NPR) for in vitro antiherpetic application. The NPs formulation was initially optimized using the dichloromethane extract of J. dioica, the major component of which was RZ. The optimized NPR formulation was stable, with a size of 263 nm, polydispersity index < 0.2, the zeta potential of –37 mV, and RZ encapsulation efficiency of 89 %. The NPR showed sustained release of RZ for 48 h with release percentages of 95 and 97 % at neutral and slightly acidic pH, respectively. Regarding in vitro antiherpetic activity, the optimized NPR showed a selectivity index for HSV-1 of ≈16 and for HSV-2 of 13.

Abstract

Previous research shows that dispositional mindfulness is related to cognitive aspects. The relationship between executive functions and dispositional mindfulness is poorly studied. The aim of this work is to characterize the executive functioning associated with dispositional mindfulness. Dispositional mindfulness was evaluated in 90 undergraduates through the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale. In addition, inhibition (Stroop task), cognitive flexibility (rule shift cards), processing speed (digit symbol substitution test), planning (zoo map test) and abstract reasoning (similarities test) were used to evaluate executive function. A multiple hierarchical regression analysis was carried out to predict dispositional mindfulness based on performance in the executive function tests and the individual's age and sex. Age and sex accounted for 0.7% of dispositional mindfulness. Inhibition and cognitive flexibility accounted for 10.8% and 6%, respectively, of dispositional mindfulness, while processing speed and abstract reasoning explained 3.5% and 0.8%, respectively. Lastly, planning accounted for 0% of dispositional mindfulness. Individual differences in self-reported dispositional mindfulness may be caused by differences in executive performance. Abstract

El trabajo analiza el uso que ha realizado VOX de los medios de comunicación de pago desde su primera campaña en abril de 2014 hasta la actualidad (con cierre a 31 de diciembre de 2021). El objetivo es conocer el uso que hace el partido político de los diferentes medios de comunicación, cuantificar qué medios utiliza y analizar qué mensajes lanza a través de su publicidad política (propaganda). Se recoge el contexto competitivo, es decir el número de piezas y los medios de comunicación que han utilizado los partidos políticos y sindicatos en el periodo de estudio para establecer un marco de referencia. Se han visionado o escuchado de forma exhaustiva las 159 piezas publicitarias que VOX ha utilizado en el periodo objeto de análisis para posteriormente codificar y clasificar sus mensajes con el objeto de descubrir que temas son los más relevantes para la organización a la hora de hacer publicidad. Es decir, aquellos sobre los que quiere incidir o transmitir con mayor claridad a la ciudadanía. Además, se ha constatado qué personas son las referentes dentro de las piezas. Se concluye que Vox utiliza la radio de una forma más intensa que sus competidores, y que la formación comunica principalmente sobre temáticas relativas a la inmigración, a los impuestos y a la unidad de España., This paper analyses VOX’s use of paid media from its first campaign in April 2014 to the present (closing date 31 December 2021). The aim of this study to find out how the political party uses the different media, to quantify which media it uses and to analyse what messages it launches through its political advertising (propaganda). The competitive context is collected, i.e. the number of pieces and the media used by political parties and trade unions in the study period to establish a frame of reference. The 159 advertising pieces used by VOX in the period under analysis were viewed or listened exhaustively in order to subsequently code and classify their messages with the aim of discovering which issues are the most relevant for the organisation when it comes to advertising. That is to say, those that it wants to influence or transmit more clearly to the public. In addition, it has been established which people are the referents in the pieces. It was concluded that Vox uses the radio more intensively than its competitors, and that the party communicates mainly on issues related to immigration, taxes and the unity of Spain.
