Abstract

Although previous studies have suggested a relationship between telomere shortening and systemic sclerosis (SSc), the association between these two traits remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to assess the causal relationship between telomere length in leukocytes (LTL) and SSc using the two-sample Mendelian randomization approach, with the genome-wide association study data for both LTL and SSc. The results of inverse-variance weighted regression (OR = 0.716 [95% CI 0.528–0.970], p = 0.031) and the Mendelian randomization pleiotropy residual sum and outlier method (OR = 0.716 [95% CI 0.563–0.911], p = 0.035) indicate an association between telomere length and SSc. Specifically, longer genetically predicted LTL is associated with a reduced risk of SSc. Sensitivity tests highlight the significant roles of the variants rs10936599 and rs2736100 annotated to the TERC and TERT genes, respectively. Our findings suggest an influence of telomere length in leukocytes on the development of SSc.

Abstract

We aimed to analyze the role of the common genetic variants located in the PIN1 locus, a relevant prolyl isomerase required to control the proliferation of spermatogonial stem cells and the integrity of the blood–testis barrier, in the genetic risk of developing male infertility due to a severe spermatogenic failure (SPGF). Genotyping was performed using TaqMan genotyping assays for three PIN1 taggers (rs2287839, rs2233678 and rs62105751). The study cohort included 715 males diagnosed with SPGF and classified as suffering from non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA, n = 505) or severe oligospermia (SO, n = 210), and 1058 controls from the Iberian Peninsula. The allelic frequency differences between cases and controls were analyzed by the means of logistic regression models. A subtype specific genetic association with the subset of NOA patients classified as suffering from the Sertoli cell-only (SCO) syndrome was observed with the minor alleles showing strong risk effects for this subset (ORaddrs2287839 = 1.85 (1.17–2.93), ORaddrs2233678 = 1.62 (1.11–2.36), ORaddrs62105751 = 1.43 (1.06–1.93)). The causal variants were predicted to affect the binding of key transcription factors and to produce an altered PIN1 gene expression and isoform balance. Abstract

This paper addresses a capacitated hub problem consisting of choosing the routes and the hubs to use in order to send a set of commodities from sources to destinations in a given capacitated network with minimum cost. The capacities and costs of the arcs and hubs are given, and the graph connecting the hubs is not assumed to be complete. For solving this problem we propose a heuristic approach that makes use of a linear programming relaxation in an Iterated Local Search scheme. The heuristic turns out to be very effective and the results of the computational experiments show that near-optimal solutions can be derived rapidly for instances of large size. 38. DisPar: a parallel code to simulate observational effects, and MkBundle+: a graphical interface to create the input file of a code to calculate star formation histories

Abstract

Este proyecto fue desarrollado junto con la colaboración de investigadores pertenecientes al Grupo de Poblaciones Estelares en Galaxias (GPEG) del Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) y tiene dos objetivos principales: Minimizar el tiempo de ejecución de un algoritmo que mitiga los errores fotométricos introducidos por las fluctuaciones de luminosidad en los datos captados en observación (efecto crowding). Para ello, se desarrolló un programa por línea de comandos escrito en C++, que es capaz de manejar grandes volúmenes de datos y que se vale, tanto de estructuras de datos eficientes, como del paralelismo sobre CPU y GPU para lograr este cometido. Facilitar la representación gráfica y la manipulación de datos de forma amigable. Para cumplir este cometido, se analizó y aprovechó una parte de los scripts en Python -realizado por los investigadores- para crear una aplicación gráfica en PyQt global que los integre. Se puede destacar la capacidad para manipular diferentes sesiones de usuario y representar, mediante Matplotlib, los datos leídos en formato FITS, entre otras funcionalidades.
