The article focuses on the female gametogenesis in flowering plants, its reproductive versatility and epigenetic control. It is said that such plants have a reduced and ephemeral gametophyte needed in male and female gametophyte formation and in sexual reproduction. Reproductive alternatives of the plants are cited such as asexual reproduction through seeds, embryogenesis and egg cell development via parthenogenesis. Epigenetic control of cell specification in the Arabidopsis ovule is explored.
