Fundamento: El conocimiento del inglés como el idioma empleado globalmente en diversos sectores, se ha convertido, junto a las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones, es una herramienta de formación, trabajo y entretenimiento indispensable; el dominio de este posibilita las relaciones de cooperación e intercambio de profesionales del sector de la salud en varios países. Objetivo: Diseñar un material didáctico para el desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa audio-oral en inglés en estudiantes de posgrado de la carrera de Medicina, mediante el empleo de tecnologías de la información y la comunicación. Metodología: Se realizó una investigación de desarrollo con enfoque mixto en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Holguín durante el período marzo-julio de 2022. Se asumió el método dialéctico materialista como concepción general de la investigación y se emplearon otros del nivel teórico: histórico-lógico, análisis y síntesis e inducción deducción, sistémico-estructural-funcional y revisión documental; empíricos: encuesta, entrevista y observación participativa. Resultados: Las principales dificultades estuvieron relacionadas con el insuficiente tratamiento de la competencia comunicativa audio-oral en inglés, se constató la importancia de la misma dentro del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje del inglés, pues establece las pautas generales que se deben seguir para una comunicación efectiva y se instituye desde una mirada holística del acto comunicativo del profesional. Conclusiones: Los especialistas valoraron el material como adecuado por su estructura y factibilidad para su implementación. Después de su aplicación se evidenció su efectividad en la consolidación del aprendizaje en este nivel educacional a través de la preparación idiomática.

RESUMEN Introducción: La traducción no es la simple búsqueda de correspondencias entre palabras de idiomas distintos sino el traslado, en el mayor grado de fidelidad posible de los conceptos que determinados autores han expresado en otra lengua. Objetivo: Determinar la efectividad del material didáctico de traducción en los profesionales de la salud que optan por categorías científicas y docentes superiores. Métodos: Se realizó una investigación de desarrollo desde septiembre de 2020 hasta febrero de 2023 en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Holguín. Se siguió el enfoque dialéctico- materialista y se utilizaron los métodos empíricos: la observación científica, la entrevista y la encuesta; y métodos teóricos: histórico-lógico, análisis-síntesis e hipotético-deductivo. Resultados: Las principales dificultades estuvieron relacionadas con los escasos conocimientos en cuanto a las técnicas y normas de traducción, así como el inadecuado tratamiento metodológico al desarrollo de la misma durante las clases de posgrado, además de la insuficiente bibliografía con la que se cuenta relacionada con el desarrollo de la competencia traductora. Por consiguiente, se elaboró un material didáctico para resolver los problemas encontrados. Conclusiones: Los especialistas valoraron el material didáctico como adecuado en la adquisición de la competencia traductora en los profesionales de la salud que optaban por categorías científicas y docentes superiores. Luego de su implementación se apreció un mayor nivel de competencia lingüística, superación idiomática y fidelidad hacia los textos originales. In this work, we report on five novel coordination polymers (CPs) based on the linkage of the [Cd(6apic)2] building block [where 6apic = 6-aminopicolinate] by different bipyridine-type organic spacers, forming different coordination compounds with the following formulae: [Cd(μ-6apic)2]n (1), {[Cd(6apic)2(μ-bipy)]·H2O}n (2), {[Cd(6apic)2(μ-bpe)]·2H2O}n (3), [Cd(6apic)(μ-6apic)(μ-bpa)0.5]n (4) and {[Cd2(6apic)4(μ-tmbp)]·7H2O}n (5) [where bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, bpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpa = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) and tmbp = 1,3-di(4-pyridyl)propane]. Most of the synthesized compounds form infinite metal–organic rods through the linkage of the building block by the bipyridine-type linker, except in the case of compound 4 whose assembly forms a densely packed 3D architecture. All compounds were fully characterized and their photoluminescence properties were studied experimentally and computationally through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All compounds display, upon UV excitation, a similar blue emission of variable intensity depending on the linker employed for the connection of the building units, among which compound 2 deserves to be highlighted for its room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with an emission lifetime of 32 ms that extends to 79 ms at low temperature. These good photoluminescence properties, in addition to its stability in water over a wide pH range (between 2 and 10), motivated us to study compound 2 as a sensor for the detection of metal ions in water, and it showed high sensitivity to Fe3+ through a fluorescence turn-off mechanism and an unspecific turn-on response to Zn2+. Furthermore, the compound is processed as a paper-based analytical device (PAD) in which the phosphorescence emission is preserved, improving the sensing capacity toward Fe3+ ions. In the present work, we report on a 3D MOF of {[Pb5(μ3-OH)(μ3-NO3)3(μ6-pmdc)3]·H2O}n formula (pmdc = pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxylate) synthesized by an oven-heated, solvent-free procedure. The large connectivity afforded by the three ligands in their coordination to lead(II) ions grows cubic building units characterized by a central Pb atom with an unusual coordination index of 12 and 6 pmdc ligands occupying the faces. These cubic units are linked to one another giving rise to a quite condensed structure that represents an unprecedented topology showing the (4·62)6(43)2(45·610)3(45·68·82)6(46·69)6(612·83) point symbol. The crystalline material has been characterized by routine physico-chemical techniques to confirm its purity, and its thermal behaviour has been also studied by thermogravimetric and thermodiffractometric analyses. The solid presents a greenish blue photoluminescent emission based on pmdc ligands, as revealed by time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, which is substantially more intense than in the free H2pmdc ligand according to its improved quantum yield. The emissive capacity of the material is further analysed according to decreasing temperature of the polycrystalline sample, finding that sizeable, long-lasting phosphorescence is present.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly versatile materials. Here, two novel MOFs, branded as IEF-23 and IEF-24 and based on an antibacterial tricarboxylate linker and zinc or copper cations, and holding antibacterial properties, are presented. The materials were synthesized by the solvothermal route and fully characterized. The antibacterial activity of IEF-23 and IEF-24 was investigated against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli via the agar diffusion method. These bacteria are some of the most broadly propagated pathogens and are more prone to the development of antibacterial resistance. As such, they represent an archetype to evaluate the efficiency of novel antibacterial treatments. MOFs were active against both strains, exhibiting higher activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Thus, the potential of the developed MOFs as antibacterial agents was proved.

Fundamento: el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora en inglés constituye una necesidad en la formación de los futuros profesionales de la salud, y la educación a distancia es una vía a través de la cual se puede lograr el desarrollo de esta habilidad. Objetivo: diseñar un manual didáctico para desarrollar la habilidad de comprensión lectora en los estudiantes de Medicina a través de la educación a distancia. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Holguín en el período marzo de 2019-noviembre de 2020. Se asumió el enfoque dialéctico-materialista y se emplearon los métodos del nivel teórico: análisis-síntesis, inducción-deducción, histórico-lógico y modelación; empíricos: análisis documental, observación de clases, entrevista y cuestionario; y procedimientos estadísticos. Resultados: las principales dificultades estuvieron relacionadas con el tratamiento de la comprensión lectora en las clases de inglés, así como la escasa habilidad de los estudiantes; se constató el interés en su desarrollo por su importancia en la integración de las diferentes habilidades en el proceso de comunicación, por lo que se elaboró un manual didáctico para solucionarlas mediante el empleo de la educación a distancia. Conclusiones: la labor investigativa desarrollada permitió revelar las insuficiencias en el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora en inglés. The present study reports on a 2D lamellar coordination polymer (CP) of {[Zn(µ3-pmdc)(H2O)]·H2O}n formula (pmdc = pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxylate). This CP is synthesized under an appropriate acid-base reaction between the gently mortared reagents in the solid state through a solvent-free procedure that avoids the presence of concomitant byproducts. The X-ray crystal structure reveals the occurrence of Zn2 entities connected through carboxylate groups of pmdc, which behave as triconnected nodes, giving rise to six-membered ring-based layers that are piled up through hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition to a routine physico-chemical characterization, the thermal evolution of the compound has been studied by combining thermogravimetric and thermodiffractometric data. The photoluminescence properties are characterized in the solid state and the processes governing the spectra are described using time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) with two different approaches employing different program packages. The emissive capacity of the material is further analyzed according to the dehydration and decreasing temperature of the polycrystalline sample.

As a starting point, a new 3D porous framework with the {[CoL]·0.5DMF·H2O}n chemical formula (where L = 3-amino-4-hydroxybenzoate) is described. Its performance as a single molecule magnet was explored. The study of magnetic properties reveals that Co-MOF shows no frequency-fdependant alternating current (ac) signals under zero direct current (dc) magnetic field, whereas single-molecule magnet behaviour is achieved when CoII ions are diluted in a ZnII based matrix. Interestingly, this strategy renders a bifunctional [CoxZn1-xL]n material that is also characterized by a strong photoluminescent emitting capacity.

Two novel Ce(III) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with formulas [Ce(5Meip)(H-5Meip)]nGR-MOF-17 and [CeCl(5Meip)(DMF)]nGR-MOF-18 (5Meip = 5-methylisophthalate, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) have been synthesized, forming 3-dimensional frameworks. Magnetic measurements show that both compounds present field-induced slow magnetic relaxation under a small applied dc field. For GR-MOF-17, the temperature dependence of relaxation times is best described by a Raman mechanism, whereas for GR-MOF-18, relaxation occurs through a combination of Raman and local-mode pathways. Moreover, when avoiding short Ce⋯Ce interactions by magnetic dilution in GR-MOF-17@La and GR-MOF-18@La, only the local-mode mechanism is responsible for magnetic relaxation. Photophysical studies show the occurrence of ligand-centred luminescence in both compounds and phosphorescence emission at low temperature for GR-MOF-17. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lead halide perovskites are well known for their exceptional photophysical and electronic properties, which have placed them at the forefront of challenging optoelectronic applications and solar‐to‐fuel conversion. However, their air/water instability, combined with their toxicity, is still a critical problem that has slowed down their commercialization. In this sense, bismuth‐based halide derivatives attract much interest as a potentially safer, air‐stable alternative. Herein, a novel Bi‐based perovskite‐inspired material, IEF‐19 (IEF stands for IMDEA Energy Framework), which contains a bulky aromatic cation (1,5‐diammonium naphthalene), is prepared. Additionally, an N‐alkylation strategy is successfully employed to achieve four water‐stable perovskite‐inspired materials, which contains diammonium naphthalene cations that are tetra‐alkylated by methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl groups. Moreover, computational studies are performed to gain a deeper understanding of the intrinsic structural stability and affinity of water molecules for Bi‐based perovskite‐inspired materials. Importantly, the air‐ and water‐stable IEF‐19‐Et (i.e., stable at least 12 months under ambient conditions and 3 weeks in contact with water) is found to be an active photocatalyst for vapor‐phase overall water splitting in the absence of any sacrificial agent under both ultraviolet–visible or simulated sunlight irradiation. This material exhibits an estimated apparent quantum yield of 0.08% at 400 nm, partially explained by its adequate energy band level diagram. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new family of six complexes based on 5-nitropicolinic acid (5-npic) and transition metals has been obtained: [M(5-npic)2]n (MII = Mn (1) and Cd (2)), [Cu(5-npic)2]n (3), and [M(5-npic)2(H2O)2] (MII = Co (4), Ni (5), and Zn (6)), which display 1D, 2D, and mononuclear structures, respectively, thanks to different coordination modes of 5-npic. After their physicochemical characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffractio (SCXRD), elemental analyses (EA), and spectroscopic techniques, quantum chemical calculations using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) were performed to further study the luminescence properties of compounds 2 and 6. The potential anticancer activity of all complexes was tested against three tumor cell lines, B16-F10, HT29, and HepG2, which are models widely used for studying melanoma, colon cancer, and liver cancer, respectively. The best results were found for compounds 2 and 4 against B16-F10 (IC50 = 26.94 and 45.10 µg mL-1, respectively). In addition, anti-inflammatory studies using RAW 264.7 cells exhibited promising activity for 2, 3, and 6 (IC50 NO = 5.38, 24.10, and 17.63 µg mL-1, respectively). Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a variety of interesting features related to their composition and structure that make them excellent candidates to be used in agriculture. However, few studies have reported their use as delivery agents of agrochemicals. In this work, the natural polyphenol chlorogenic acid (CGA) was entrapped via simple impregnation in the titanium aminoterephthalate MOF, MIL-125-NH2. A combination of experimental and computational techniques was used to understand and quantify the encapsulated CGA in MIL-125-NH2. Subsequently, CGA delivery studies were carried out in water at different pHs, showing a fast release of CGA during the first 2 h (17.3 ± 0.3% at pH = 6.5). In vivo studies were also performed against larvae of mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), evidencing the long-lasting insecticidal activity of CGA@MIL-125-NH2. This report demonstrates the potential of MOFs in the efficient release of agrochemicals, and paves the way to their study against in vivo models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have prepared a bis(compartmental) Mannich base ligand H4L (1,4,8,11-tetraaza-1,4,8,11-tetrakis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzyl)cyclotetradecane) specifically designed to obtain bis(TMIILnIII) tetranuclear complexes (TM = transition metal). In this regard, we have succeeded in obtaining three new complexes of the formula [Zn2(μ-L)(μ-OAc)Dy2(NO3)2]·[Zn2(μ-L)(μ-OAc)Dy2(NO3)(OAc)]·4CHCl3·2MeOH (1) and [TM2(μ-H2L)2(μ-succinate)Ln2(NO3)2] (NO3)2·2H2O·6MeOH (TMII = Zn, LnIII = Dy (2); TMII = Co, LnIII = Dy (3)). Compound 1 contains two different bis(ZnDy) tetranuclear molecules that cocrystallize in the structure, in which acetato bridging ligands connect the ZnII and DyIII ions within each ZnDy subunit. This compound does not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation at zero field, but it is activated in the presence of an applied dc magnetic field and/or by Dy/Y magnetic dilution, showing two relaxation processes corresponding to each of the two different bis(ZnDy) units found in the structure. As revealed by the theoretical calculations, magnetic relaxation in 1 is single-ion in origin and takes place through the first excited state of each DyIII ion. When using the succinato dicarboxylate bridging ligand instead of acetate, compounds 2 and 3 were serendipitously formed, which have a closed structure with the succinate anion bridging two ZnDy subunits belonging to two different ligands. It should be noted that only compound 2 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field. According to experimental and theoretical data, 2 relaxes through the second excited Kramers doublet (Ueff = 342 K). In contrast, 3 displays field-induced SMM behaviour (Ueff = 203 K). However, the Co/Zn diluted version of this compound 3Zn shows slow relaxation at zero field (Ueff = 347 K). Ab initio theoretical calculations clearly show that the weak ferromagnetic coupling between CoII and DyIII ions is at the origin of the lack of slow relaxation of this compound at zero field. Compound 2 and its diluted analogues 2Y and 3Zn show hysteresis loops at very low temperature, thus confirming their SMM behaviour. Finally, compounds 1 and 2 show DyIII based emission even at room temperature that, in the case of 2, allows us to extract the splitting of the ground 6H15/2 term, which matches reasonably well with theoretical calculations. The synthesis and theoretical-experimental characterization of a novel diprotanated decavanadate is presented here due to our search for novel anticancer metallodrugs. Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA), which is also known to have anticancer activity in osteosarcoma cell lines, was introduced as a possible cationic species that could act as a counterpart for the decavanadate anion. However, the isolated compound contains the previously reported vanadium (V) dioxido-tpma moieties, and the decavanadate anion appears to be diprotonated. The structural characterization of the compound was performed by infrared spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In addition, DFT calculations were used to analyze the reactive sites involved in the donor-acceptor interactions from the molecular electrostatic potential maps. The level of theory mPW1PW91/6–31G(d)-LANL2DZ and ECP = LANL2DZ for the V atom was used. These insights about the compounds’ main interactions were supported by analyzing the noncovalent interactions utilizing the AIM and Hirshfeld surfaces approach. Molecular docking studies with small RNA fragments were used to assess the hypothesis that decavanadate’s anticancer activity could be attributed to its interaction with lncRNA molecules. Thus, a combination of three potentially beneficial components could be evaluated in various cancer cell lines.

Oxoperoxovanadium (V) complexes [VO (O)2 (nf) (bp)] (1) and [VO (O)2 (ox) (bp)] (2) based on 5-nitro-2-furoic acid (nf), oxine (ox) and 2, 2′ bipyridine (bp) bidentate ligands have been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible, mass, and NMR spectroscopic techniques. The structure of complex 2 shows distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry, as confirmed by a single-crystal XRD diffraction study. The interactions of complexes with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) are investigated using UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. It has been observed that CT-DNA interacts with complexes through groove binding mode and the binding constants for complexes 1 and 2 are 8.7 × 103 M−1 and 8.6 × 103 M−1, respectively, and BSA quenching constants for complexes 1 and 2 are 0.0628 × 106 M−1 and 0.0163 × 106 M−1, respectively. The ability of complexes to cleave DNA is investigated using the gel electrophoresis method with pBR322 plasmid DNA. Furthermore, the cytotoxic effect of the complexes is evaluated against the HeLa cell line using an MTT assay. The complexes are subjected to density functional theory calculations to gain insight into their molecular geometries and are in accordance with the results of docking studies. Furthermore, based on molecular docking studies, the intermolecular interactions responsible for the stronger binding affinities between metal complexes and DNA are discussed.

The development of convenient, non-complicated, and cost-efficient processing techniques for packing low-density MOF powders for industry implementation is essential nowadays. To increase MOFs’ availability in industrial settings, we propose the synthesis of a novel 3D Tb-MOF (1) and a simple and non-expensive method for its immobilization in the form of pellets and membranes in polymethacrylate (PMMA) and polysulphone (PSF). The photoluminescent properties of the processed materials were investigated. To simulate industrial conditions, stability towards temperature and humidity have been explored in the pelletized material. Water-adsorption studies have been carried out in bulk and processed materials, and because of the considerable capacity to adsorb water, proton-conduction studies have been investigated for 1.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used as reservoirs of metal ions with relevant antibacterial effects. Here, two novel Zn-based MOFs with the formulas [Zn4(μ4-O)(μ-FA)L2] (GR-MOF-8) and [Zn4(μ4-O)L2(H2O)] (GR-MOF-9) (H3L: 5-((4-carboxyphenyl)ethynyl) in isophthalic acid and FA (formate anion) were solvothermally synthetized and fully characterized. The antibacterial activity of GR-MOF-8 and 9 was investigated against Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Escherichia Coli (EC) by the agar diffusion method. Both bacteria are among the most relevant human and animal pathogens, causing a wide variety of infections, and are often related with the development of antimicrobial resistances. While both Zn-based materials exhibited antibacterial activity against both strains, GR-MOF-8 showed the highest inhibitory action, likely due to a more progressive Zn release under the tested experimental conditions. This is particularly evidenced in the inhibition of SA, with an increasing effect of GR-MOF-8 with time, which is of great significance to ensure the disappearance of the microorganism.

Due to the fast, emerging development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the need for novel, efficient routes to battle these pathogens is crucial; in this scenario, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for combating them effectively. Herein, a novel Cu-MOF—namely 1—that displays the formula [Cu3L2(DMF)2]n (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) is described, synthesized by the combination of copper(II) and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (H3L)—both having well-known antibacterial properties. The resulting three-dimensional structure motivated us to study the antibacterial activity, adsorptive capacity and processability of the MOF in the form of pellets and membranes as a proof-of-concept to evaluate its future application in devices.

The work presented herein reports on the synthesis, structural and physico-chemical characterization, luminescence properties and luminescent sensing activity of a family of isostructural coordination polymers (CPs) with the general formula [Ln2(μ4-5Meip)3(DMF)]n (where Ln(III) = Sm (1Sm), Eu (2Eu), Gd (3Gd), Tb (4Tb) and Yb (5Yb) and 5Meip = 5-methylisophthalate, DMF = N,N-dimethylmethanamide). Crystal structures consist of 3D frameworks tailored by the linkage between infinite lanthanide(III)-carboxylate rods by means of the tetradentate 5Meip ligands. Photoluminescence measurements in solid state at variable temperatures reveal the best-in-class properties based on the capacity of the 5Meip ligand to provide efficient energy transfers to the lanthanide(III) ions, which brings intense emissions in both the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. On the one hand, compound 5Yb displays characteristic lanthanide-centered bands in the NIR with sizeable intensity even at room temperature. Among the compounds emitting in the visible region, 4Tb presents a high QY of 63%, which may be explained according to computational calculations. At last, taking advantage of the good performance as well as high chemical and optical stability of 4Tb in water and methanol, its sensing capacity to detect 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) among other nitroaromatic-like explosives has been explored, obtaining high detection capacity (with Ksv around 105 M−1), low limit of detection (in the 10−6–10−7 M) and selectivity among other molecules (especially in methanol).

The present work reports on a detailed discussion about the synthesis, characterization, and luminescence properties of three pairs of enantiopure 3D metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with general formula {[Ln2(L/D-tart)3(H2O)2]·3H2O}n (3D_Ln-L/D, where Ln = Sm(III), Eu(III) or Gd(III), and L/D-tart = L- or D-tartrate), and ten pairs of enantiopure 2D coordination polymers (CPs) with general formula [Ln(L/D-Htart)2(OH)(H2O)2]n (2D_Ln-L/D, where Ln = Y(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III) or Yb(III), and L/D-Htart = hydrogen L- or D-tartrate) based on single-crystal X-ray structures. Enantiopure nature of the samples has been further corroborated by Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) as well as by circular dichroism (CD) spectra. Solid-state emission spectra of Eu(III), Tb(III), and Dy(III)-based compounds confirm the occurrence of ligand-to-metal charge transfers in view of the characteristic emissions for these lanthanide ions, and emission decay curves were also recorded to estimate the emission lifetimes for the reported compounds. A complete theoretical study was accomplished to better understand the energy transfers occurring in the Eu-based counterparts, which allows for explaining the different performances of 3D-MOFs and 2D-layered compounds. As inferred from the colorimetric diagrams, emission characteristics of Eu-based 2D CPs depend on the temperature, so their luminescent thermometry has been determined on the basis of a ratiometric analysis between the ligand-centered and Eu-centered emission. Finally, a detailed study of the polarized luminescence intensity emitted by the samples is also accomplished to support the occurrence of chiro-optical activity.

Citrulline (C6H13N3O3) is a non-protein amino acid found in watermelon. In physiological conditions, it is almost entirely present as a zwitterion, so its carboxylic and amine groups can act as Lewis donors, chelating metallic cations. In addition, Citrulline possesses a terminal ureide group of the aliphatic chain, which appears to be non-innocent. Although Citrulline is similar to other classical amino acids, only one coordination complex has been reported in the Cambridge Crystallographic Database. As part of our search for Casiopeina® analogs, we synthesized and characterized the copper bis-citrullinato complex, [Cu(Citr)2]n. The compound was described using UV-Vis, Infrared, and Raman spectroscopy, together with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Computational tools were also used. The optimized structure, MEP map, IR and Raman spectra, and 1H and 13C chemical shifts were obtained with functional mPW1PW91 using 6-31G(d) basis set for N, O, C, and H atoms, and LANL2DZ basis set and ECP=LANL2DZ for the Cu atom. TD-mPW1PW91 calculations generated the UV-Vis spectrum. Finally, AIM and Hirshfeld surface analysis were used to examine non-covalent interactions. Previous investigations suggest Casiopeina®-like complexes can interact with DNA/RNA, creating potential anticancer chemicals. The [Cu(Citr)2]n complex’s polymeric nature and insolubility make it difficult for such purposes. However, the facile synthesis of D-Citrulline could be a novel way to find new applications for this interesting amino acid.

The aim to access linked tetravanadate [V4O12]4− anion with mixed copper(II) complexes, using α-amino acids and phenanthroline-derived ligands, resulted in the formation of four copper(II) complexes [Cu(dmb)(Gly)(OH2)]2[Cu(dmb)(Gly)]2[V4O12]·9H2O (1) [Cu(dmb)(Lys)]2[V4O12]·8H2O (2), [Cu(dmp)2][V4O12]·C2H5OH·11H2O (3), and [Cu(dmp)(Gly)Cl]·2H2O (4), where dmb = 4,4′-dimethioxy-2,2′-bipyridine; Gly = glycine; Lys = lysine; and dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline. The [V4O12]4− anion is functionalized with mixed copper(II) units in 1 and 2; while in 3, it acts as a counterion of two [Cu(dmp)]2+ units. Compound 4 crystallized as a unit that did not incorporate the vanadium cluster. All compounds present magnetic couplings arising from Cu⋯O/Cu⋯Cu bridges. Stability studies of water-soluble 3 and 4 by UV–Vis spectroscopy in cell culture medium confirmed the robustness of 3, while 4 appears to undergo ligand scrambling over time, resulting partially in the stable species [Cu(dmp)2]+ that was also identified by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry at m/z = 479. The in vitro cytotoxicity activity of 3 and 4 was determined in six cancer cell lines; the healthy cell line COS-7 was also included for comparative purposes. MCF-7 cells were more sensitive to compound 3 with an IC50 value of 12 ± 1.2 nmol. The tested compounds did not show lipid peroxidation in the TBARS assay, ruling out a mechanism of action via reactive oxygen species formation. Both compounds inhibited cell migration at 5 µM in wound-healing assays using MCF-7, PC-3, and SKLU-1 cell lines, opening a new window to study the anti-metastatic effect of mixed vanadium–copper(II) systems.
