The complex geographical scenario of Mexico allowed the cultural diversification and development of multiple cultures such as Tolteca, Teotihuacan, Mexica, and Maya, among others. Despite this rich cultural heritage, radiometric dating of Mexican cultural samples with radiocarbon (14C) began only in the 1980s and with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) in 2013. Analysis of 14C with AMS is the most widely used technique to date archaeological objects and cultural heritage. Since 2013, the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (LEMA) facility of the Institute of Physics at UNAM (IF-UNAM) has supported archaeological research in Mexico, but also investigation in other areas such as geology, physics, chemistry, and environmental sciences through the analysis of 14C, 10Be, 26Al, 129I, and Pu. The absolute dating with 14C continues to be the core of LEMA's work, where different geographical scenarios of the country and climatic conditions present very diverse analytical challenges. This work presents a basic description of the AMS system of the LEMA laboratory and describes some applications that are currently being developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collagen associated with bone samples is frequently used for radiocarbon (14C) dating of bones recovered from archaeological sites. However, submersion and exposure to moisture favors the degradation of collagen, which leads to difficulty in reliably dating bones from tropical, humid, or previously submerged archaeological sites. In this paper, we characterized the preservation state of a series of bones, through parameters such as %C, %N, C/N ratio, and collagen recovery. We performed 14C analyses of three collagen fractions obtained through the pretreatment steps (total, ultrafiltered, and insoluble collagen) in order to link the preservation state and the reproducibility of 14C values obtained from the three fractions. Collagen ultrafiltration resulted in a decrease of C/N ratio, although collagen yield was reduced. When two or three collagen fractions were obtained, ages were reproducible and consistent with expected values, according to archaeological or hydrogeological criteria. The pretreatment steps were monitored by infrared spectroscopy in order to analyze the collagen fractions at the molecular level. The presence of collagen in the total and insoluble fractions was confirmed. Since many of the Mexican samples had poor ultrafiltered collagen yield (<3%) or nonexistent yield, our results show that if additional contextual information is carefully considered, the remnant collagen in the total and insoluble fraction can be dated, especially from sites where no other datable fraction exists. In 2003, flooding occurred in the Ciudadela (Citadel) of Teotihuacan and saltpeter began to damage the Temple of the Feathered Serpent. Work done to solve this problem led to one of the most important archaeological discoveries made in this site in recent years: an intact tunnel sealed for more than a thousand years. The project created to study the tunnel was named Tlalocan or Path to the Underworld. More than 60,000 objects have been recovered after years of exploration and removing huge amounts of soil and stones. This paper presents the first results of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating performed on some of those materials recovered from the tunnel. With these findings, in combination with the archaeological data, based on stratigraphy and ceramic typology, a chronology of several events is proposed concerning the construction phases and ceremonial use, as well as partial and definitive closures of the tunnel. Every closure was accompanied by a deliberate and structured deposition of offerings and ritual refuse along the tunnel. The range of ages that covers the Bayesian calibration of samples collected along the tunnel is around 115 yr, from AD 125 to 240. Material collected at the surface of the chamber located at the end of the tunnel and under the pyramid gave ages in the interval between AD 400 and 534. The 14 C analysis of permanent teeth employing nuclear techniques has a direct application in Forensic Sciences since teeth are the hardest part of the human body and can survive natural decay or extreme conditions. After the first Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory AMS-LEMA at UNAM, our research group is interested in reproducing 14 C analysis on teeth as other countries to estimate age in the Mexican population samples. One of the main goals of this exploratory study is to know the best methodology considering relevant biological factors based on differences in tissues (enamel and dentin) that allows us to know the year of birth through the 14 C concentration comparing the yield between 14 C analyses from carbonate in enamel and collagen in dentin. In this study, Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) has been performed in 22 contemporary teeth samples (each one donated from 1 different adult), participating 22 individuals by informed consent to enable a new tool and improve forensic practices in Mexico. Carbon is extracted, converted to graphite, and pressed into a cathode. The sample is taken to an AMS system, where carbon isotopes are separated, counted, and the 14 C/ 12 C and 13 C/ 12 C ratios determined. Our results for standards and teeth samples from Mexican people are in good agreement with the expected values; they are also useful to set up the best conditions for studies in dentin and enamel. However, this is a destructive technique for dental organs; it is not suitable for individuals born previous 1950. New challenges in sample preparation processes are to be solved to take advantage of the nuclear techniques developed in the last 50 years and make new contributions to society., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd and Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine. The initial colonization of the Americas remains a highly debated topic 1 , and the exact timing of the first arrivals is unknown. The earliest archaeological record of Mexico-which holds a key geographical position in the Americas-is poorly known and understudied. Historically, the region has remained on the periphery of research focused on the first American populations 2 . However, recent investigations provide reliable evidence of a human presence in the northwest region of Mexico 3,4 , the Chiapas Highlands 5 , Central Mexico 6 and the Caribbean coast 7-9 during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene epochs. Here we present results of recent excavations at Chiquihuite Cave-a high-altitude site in central-northern Mexico-that corroborate previous findings in the Americas 10-17 of cultural evidence that dates to the Last Glacial Maximum (26,500-19,000 years ago) 18 , and which push back dates for human dispersal to the region possibly as early as 33,000-31,000 years ago. The site yielded about 1,900 stone artefacts within a 3-m-deep stratified sequence, revealing a previously unknown lithic industry that underwent only minor changes over millennia. More than 50 radiocarbon and luminescence dates provide chronological control, and genetic, palaeoenvironmental and chemical data document the changing environments in which the occupants lived. Our results provide new evidence for the antiquity of humans in the Americas, illustrate the cultural diversity of the earliest dispersal groups (which predate those of the Clovis culture) and open new directions of research.
