Abstract

This work aims at constraining the size, shape, and geometric albedo of the dwarf planet candidate 2002 MS4 through the analysis of nine stellar occultation events. Using multichord detection, we also studied the object's topography by analyzing the obtained limb and the residuals between observed chords and the best-fitted ellipse. We predicted and organized the observational campaigns of nine stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2022, resulting in two single-chord events, four double-chord detections, and three events with three to up to sixty-one positive chords. Using 13 selected chords from the 8 August 2020 event, we determined the global elliptical limb of 2002 MS4. The best-fitted ellipse, combined with the object's rotational information from the literature, constrains the object's size, shape, and albedo. Additionally, we developed a new method to characterize topography features on the object's limb. The global limb has a semi-major axis of 412 $\pm$ 10 km, a semi-minor axis of 385 $\pm$ 17 km, and the position angle of the minor axis is 121 $^\circ$ $\pm$ 16$^\circ$. From this instantaneous limb, we obtained 2002 MS4's geometric albedo and the projected area-equivalent diameter. Significant deviations from the fitted ellipse in the northernmost limb are detected from multiple sites highlighting three distinct topographic features: one 11 km depth depression followed by a 25$^{+4}_{-5}$ km height elevation next to a crater-like depression with an extension of 322 $\pm$ 39 km and 45.1 $\pm$ 1.5 km deep. Our results present an object that is $\approx$138 km smaller in diameter than derived from thermal data, possibly indicating the presence of a so-far unknown satellite. However, within the error bars, the geometric albedo in the V-band agrees with the results published in the literature, even with the radiometric-derived albedo.

Abstract Introduction Atopic dermatitis (AD) is heterogeneous in distribution pattern and clinical features. This analysis assessed the effect of dupilumab on the extent and severity of AD across various signs (erythema, edema/papulation, excoriation, lichenification) in different anatomical regions (head and neck, trunk, upper extremities, lower extremities) in patients aged 6 months to 5 years. Methods In LIBERTY AD PRESCHOOL, a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase III clinical trial, children aged 6 months to 5 years with moderate-to-severe AD were randomized 1:1 to subcutaneous dupilumab or placebo with concomitant low-potency topical corticosteroids (TCS) every 4 weeks for 16 weeks. Changes in AD signs across anatomical regions were assessed using unweighted Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) body region scores. Results Overall, 162 patients were randomized to dupilumab (n = 83) or placebo (n = 79). Large optical nonlinearities can have numerous applications, ranging from the generation of cat-states for optical quantum computation, through to quantum sensing where the sensitivity exceeds Heisenberg scaling in the resources. However, the generation of ultra-large optical nonlinearities has proved immensely challenging experimentally. We describe a novel protocol where one can effectively generate large optical nonlinearities via the conditional application of a linear operation on an optical mode by an ancilla mode, followed by a measurement of the ancilla and corrective operation on the probe mode. Our protocol can generate high quality optical Schr{\"{o}}dinger cat states useful for optical quantum computing and can be used to perform sensing of an unknown rotation or displacement in phase space, with super-Heisenberg scaling in the resources. Abstract

In terms of manned aircraft, pilots usually detect icing conditions by visual cues or by means of ice detector systems. If one of these cues is seen by the crew or systems detect icing conditions, they have to apply the evasive procedure as defined within the aircraft flight manual (AFM). However, as regards unmanned aircraft, there are not pilots on board and, consequently, nobody can act immediately when icing conditions occur. This article aims to propose new techniques of sending information to ground which make possible to know the aircraft performance correctly in icing conditions. For this goal, three contributions have been developed for the unmanned aircraft Milano. Since icing conditions are characterized quantitatively by the droplet size, the liquid water content, and the total air temperature, when these parameters are between certain limits ice formation on aircraft may occur. As a result of these contributions, in that moment, high-quality images of the wing leading edge, tail leading edge and meteorological probes will be captured and sent to ground making possible that remote pilots or artificial intelligent (AI) systems can follow the appropriate procedures, avoid encounters with severe icing conditions and perform real-time decision making. What is more, as information security is becoming an inseparable part of data communication, it is proposed how to embed relevant information within an image. Among the improvements included are image compression techniques and steganography methods.

Abstract

A ceramic-metal composite was produced by using the sol–gel method and the electrospinning technique as a potential enhancement substrate for infrared spectroscopy. The precursor solution of tetraethyl orthosilicate, aluminum nitrate, and zirconium butoxide was mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone and then electrospun into nonwoven fibrous membranes. The membranes were sintered, decorated with silver nanoparticles, and characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The ceramic membranes were composed of cylindrical fibers with an average diameter of ∼190 nm with a smooth surface and spherical particles with an average diameter of ∼9 nm embedded evenly on top. The enhancement capacity of the substrates was tested using pyridine at different concentrations with infrared spectroscopy. An enhancement factor of approximately 1 × 106 times for the signal of pyridine 1 nM was achievable, showing the material is a promising alternative to a low-cost nanostructured surface enhancement substrate for infrared spectroscopy. Abstract

Freshwater fishes exhibit a wide range of auditory adaptations and capabilities, which are assumed to help them navigate their environment, avoid predators, and find potential mates. Yet, we know very little about how freshwater environments sound to fish, or how fish with different auditory adaptations respond to different soundscapes. We first compiled data on fish hearing acuity and adaptations and provided a portrait of how anthropogenic sounds compare to natural sounds in different freshwater soundscapes. We then conducted a sound‐enrichment field experiment at Lake Saint Pierre, a large fluvial lake in Canada, to evaluate the effect of motorboat sound exposure on the fish community by looking at the extent to which changes in species abundances were linked to auditory adaptations. Data compilation showed that the hearing acuity of most species overlaps with a wide range of ambient and anthropogenic underwater sounds while the field experiment showed that species with more specialized auditory structures were captured less often in sound‐enriched traps, indicating avoidance behavior. Our findings highlight the importance of considering species' sensorial adaptations when evaluating the community‐scale effects of anthropogenic sounds on the fish community, especially at low levels of anthropogenic activity. Abstract

The class of $\alpha$-stable distributions enjoys multiple practical applications in signal processing, finance, biology and other areas because it allows to describe interesting and complex data patterns, such as asymmetry or heavy tails, in contrast with the simpler and widely used Gaussian distribution. The density associated with a general $\alpha$-stable distribution cannot be obtained in closed form, which hinders the process of estimating its parameters. A nonlinear population Monte Carlo (NPMC) scheme is applied in order to approximate the posterior probability distribution of the parameters of an $\alpha$-stable random variable given a set of random realizations of the latter. The approximate posterior distribution is computed by way of an iterative algorithm and it consists of a collection of samples in the parameter space with associated nonlinearly-transformed importance weights. A numerical comparison of the main existing methods to estimate the $\alpha$-stable parameters is provided, including the traditional frequentist techniques as well as a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and a likelihood-free Bayesian approach. It is shown by means of computer simulations that the NPMC method outperforms the existing techniques in terms of parameter estimation error and failure rate for the whole range of values of $\alpha$, including the smaller values for which most existing methods fail to work properly. Furthermore, it is shown that accurate parameter estimates can often be computed based on a low number of observations. Abstract

Ecologists often interpret variation in the spatial distribution of populations in terms of responses to environmental features, but disentangling the effects of individual variables can be difficult if latent effects and spatial and temporal correlations are not accounted for properly. Here, we use hierarchical models based on a Poisson log-normal mixture to understand the spatial variation in relative abundance (counts per standardized unit of effort) of yellow perch, Perca flavescens, the most abundant fish species in Lake Saint Pierre, Quebec, Canada. The mixture incorporates spatially varying environmental covariates that represent local habitat characteristics, and random temporal and spatial effects that capture the effects of unobserved ecological processes. The sampling design covers the margins but not the central region of the lake. We fit spatial generalized linear mixed models based on three different prior covariance structures for the local latent effects: a single Gaussian process (GP) over the lake, a GP over a circle, and independent GP for each shore. The models allow for independence, isotropy, or nonstationary spatial effects. Nonstationarity is dealt with using two different approaches, geometric anisotropy, and the inclusion of covariates in the correlation structure of the latent spatial process. The proposed approaches for specification of spatial domain and choice of Gaussian process priors may prove useful in other applications that involve spatial correlation along an irregular contour or in discontinous spatial domains.
