We uncover the thermodynamical properties of a class of non-asymptotically flat geometries, referred here as the Kerr effective geometries, that realize the hidden symmetries of Kerr black hole spacetimes via Teukolsky's equation in the theory of linear gravitational perturbations. While the thermodynamic properties, such as entropy, remain the same as those of Kerr black holes, the asymptotic charges, as we will demonstrate, are different. In this new framework with the ambient flat asymptotic boundary removed, we derive the mass and angular momentum of the Kerr effective geometries using the regulated Komar integral and the Brown-York prescription. We also obtain explicit expressions for the corresponding gauge potentials and electric charges. Magnetoelectric materials displaying strong magnetically induced polarization have attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and various fast electrically controlled magnetic devices. CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ (CMO) stands out for its giant spin-induced ferroelectric polarization. However, the origin of the induced electric polarization in CMO remains highly controversial and continues to be a subject of ongoing debate. In this paper, through room temperature X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, and thermally stimulated depolarizing current (TSDC) measurements, we provide experimental evidence for a route to tune the magnetically induced polarization by modifying the exchange-striction in CMO via Sr-doping. Our findings demonstrate that the large and broad current peaks observed near the first magnetic phase transition ($T_N1 \sim 90$ K) indicate polarization contributions from both thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) and intrinsic magnetically induced electric polarization. We suggest that this reduction in induced electric polarization in CMO originates from the increase in the Mn$^{3+}$ -- O -- Mn$^{4+}$ bond angle due to Sr$^{2+}$ doping, weakening the exchange-striction interaction. Meanwhile, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) effect determines the direction of the induced electric polarization. Our result sheds light on understanding the intriguing giant-induced polarization in CMO and similar compounds with complex magnetic structures.

Hybrid halide perovskites (HHPs) have attracted significant attention due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties that combine the advantages of low cost-effective fabrication methods of organic-inorganic materials. Notably, low-dimensional hybrid halide perovskites including two-dimensional (2D) layers and one-dimensional (1D) chains, are recognized for their superior stability and moisture resistance, making them highly appealing for practical applications. Particularly, DMAPbI3 has attracted attention due to other interesting behaviors and properties, such as thermally induced order-disorder processes, dielectric transition, and cooperative electric ordering of DMA dipole moments. In this paper, we investigated the interplay between low-temperature SPT undergone by the low-dimensional (1D) hybrid halide perovskite-like material DMAPbI3 and its optoelectronic properties. Our approach combines synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, thermo-microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. Temperature-dependent Synchrotron powder diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy reveal that the modes associated with I-Pb-I and DMA+ ion play a crucial role in the order-disorder SPT in DMAPbI3. The reversible SPT modifies its optoelectronic properties, notably affecting its thermochromic behavior and PL emission. The origin of the PL phenomenon is associated to self-trapped excitons (STEs), which are allowed due to a strong electron-phonon coupling quantified by the Huang-Rhys factor (S = 97+-1). Notably, we identify the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon mode at 84 cm-1 which plays a significant role in electron-phonon interaction. Our results show these STEs not only intensify the PL spectra at lower temperatures but also induce a shift in the color emission, transforming it from a light orange-red to an intense bright strong red., Comment: 38 pages, 8 figures

During a wildfire, the work of the aerial coordinator is crucial for the control of the wildfire and the minimization of the burned area and the damage caused. Since it could be very useful for the coordinator to have decision-making tools at his/her disposal, this framework deals with an optimization model to obtain the optimal planning of firefighting helicopters, deciding the points where the aircraft should load water, the areas of the wildfire where they should work, and the rest bases to which each helicopter should be assigned. It was developed a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model which takes into account the configuration of helicopters, in closed circuits, as well as the flight aerial regulations in Spain. Due to the complexity of the model, two algorithms are developed, based on the Simulated Annealing and Iterated Local Search metaheuristic techniques. Both algorithms are tested with real data instances, obtaining very promising results for future application in the planning of aircraft throughout a wildfire evolution., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures

Microservice architectures are increasingly used to modularize IoT applications and deploy them in distributed and heterogeneous edge computing environments. Over time, these microservice-based IoT applications are susceptible to performance anomalies caused by resource hogging (e.g., CPU or memory), resource contention, etc., which can negatively impact their Quality of Service and violate their Service Level Agreements. Existing research on performance anomaly detection for edge computing environments focuses on model training approaches that either achieve high accuracy at the expense of a time-consuming and resource-intensive training process or prioritize training efficiency at the cost of lower accuracy. To address this gap, while considering the resource constraints and the large number of devices in modern edge platforms, we propose two clustering-based model training approaches : (1) intra-cluster parameter transfer learning-based model training (ICPTL) and (2) cluster-level model training (CM). These approaches aim to find a trade-off between the training efficiency of anomaly detection models and their accuracy. We compared the models trained under ICPTL and CM to models trained for specific devices (most accurate, least efficient) and a single general model trained for all devices (least accurate, most efficient). Our findings show that the model accuracy of ICPTL is comparable to that of the model per device approach while requiring only 40% of the training time. In addition, CM further improves training efficiency by requiring 23% less training time and reducing the number of trained models by approximately 66% compared to ICPTL, yet achieving a higher accuracy than a single general model.

Ethylene is a crucial chemical in manufacturing numerous consumer products. In recent years, the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) technique has garnered significant interest as a means for ethylene production due to its high ethylene selectivity and energy efficiency, the availability of ethane as a feedstock, and catalysts that can improve the performance of the process. This work delves into determining the optimal operating conditions for the ODHE process within a multi-tubular packed-bed membrane reactor by formulating and resolving multi-objective optimization (MOO) problems. The elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) method is employed in conjunction with three different multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods: (i) technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), (ii) preference ranking on the basis of ideal-average distance (PROBID), and (iii) simple additive weighting (SAW), to solve the MOO problems, obtain the optimal Pareto frontier, and recommend one solution for ultimate implementation. Through this approach, this work elucidates the trade-offs between conflicting objectives, deepens the comprehension of their interrelationships, and underscores the effects of decision variables on the optimization objectives. Consequently, this work provides practitioners with the insights needed for informed decision-making in the ODHE process operation.

We derive the explicit embedding of the effective Kerr spacetimes, which are pertinent to the vanishing of static Love numbers, soft hair descriptions of Kerr black holes, and low-frequency scalar-Kerr scattering amplitudes, as solutions within N = 2 supergravity. These spacetimes exhibit a hidden $SL(2, R) \times U (1)$ or $SO(4, 2)$ symmetry resembling the so called subtracted geometries with $SL(2, R) \times SL(2, R)$ symmetry, which accurately represent the near-horizon geometry of Kerr black holes and, as we will argue most accurately represents the internal structure of the Kerr black hole. To quantify the differences among the effective Kerr spacetimes, we compare their physical quantities, internal structures, and geodesic equations. Although their thermodynamic properties, including entropy, match those of Kerr, our study uncovers significant differences in the interiors of these effective Kerr solutions. A careful examination of the internal structure of the spacetimes highlights the distinctions between various effective Kerr geometries and their quasinormal spectra.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

The transit method allows the detection and characterization of planetary systems by analyzing stellar light curves. Convolutional neural networks appear to offer a viable solution for automating these analyses. In this research, two 1D convolutional neural network models, which work with simulated light curves in which transit-like signals were injected, are presented. One model operates on complete light curves and estimates the orbital period, and the other one operates on phase-folded light curves and estimates the semimajor axis of the orbit and the square of the planet-to-star radius ratio. Both models were tested on real data from TESS light curves with confirmed planets to ensure that they are able to work with real data. The results obtained show that 1D CNNs are able to characterize transiting exoplanets from their host star's detrended light curve and, furthermore, reducing both the required time and computational costs compared with the current detection and characterization algorithms.

Autonomous vehicles are suited for continuous area patrolling problems. Finding an optimal patrolling strategy can be challenging due to unknown environmental factors, such as wind or landscape; or autonomous vehicles' constraints, such as limited battery life or hardware failures. Importantly, patrolling large areas often requires multiple agents to collectively coordinate their actions. However, an optimal coordination strategy is often non-trivial to be manually defined due to the complex nature of patrolling environments. In this paper, we consider a patrolling problem with environmental factors, agent limitations, and three typical cooperation problems -- collision avoidance, congestion avoidance, and patrolling target negotiation. We propose a multi-agent reinforcement learning solution based on a reinforced inter-agent learning (RIAL) method. With this approach, agents are trained to develop their own communication protocol to cooperate during patrolling where faults can and do occur. The solution is validated through simulation experiments and is compared with several state-of-the-art patrolling solutions from different perspectives, including the overall patrol performance, the collision avoidance performance, the efficiency of battery recharging strategies, and the overall fault tolerance.

Job scheduling is a critical component of workload management systems that can significantly influence system performance, e.g., in HPC clusters. The scheduling objectives are often mixed, such as maximizing resource utilization and minimizing job waiting time. An increasing number of researchers are moving from heuristic-based approaches to Deep Reinforcement Learning approaches in order to optimize scheduling objectives. However, the job scheduler's state space is partially observable to a DRL-based agent because the job queue is practically unbounded. The agent's observation of the state space is constant in size since the input size of the neural networks is predefined. All existing solutions to this problem intuitively allow the agent to observe a fixed window size of jobs at the head of the job queue. In our research, we have seen that such an approach can lead to "window staleness" where the window becomes full of jobs that can not be scheduled until the cluster has completed sufficient work. In this paper, we propose a novel general technique that we call \emph{split window}, which allows the agent to observe both the head \emph{and tail} of the queue. With this technique, the agent can observe all arriving jobs at least once, which completely eliminates the window staleness problem. By leveraging the split window, the agent can significantly reduce the average job waiting time and average queue length, alternatively allowing the use of much smaller windows and, therefore, faster training times. Cloud computing environment simulators enable cost-effective experimentation of novel infrastructure designs and management approaches by avoiding significant costs incurred from repetitive deployments in real Cloud platforms. However, widely used Cloud environment simulators compromise on usability due to complexities in design and configuration, along with the added overhead of programming language expertise. Existing approaches attempting to reduce this overhead, such as script-based simulators and Graphical User Interface (GUI) based simulators, often compromise on the extensibility of the simulator. Simulator extensibility allows for customization at a fine-grained level, thus reducing it significantly affects flexibility in creating simulations. To address these challenges, we propose an architectural framework to enable human-readable script-based simulations in existing Cloud environment simulators while minimizing the impact on simulator extensibility. We implement the proposed framework for the widely used Cloud environment simulator, the CloudSim toolkit, and compare it against state-of-the-art baselines using a practical use case. The resulting framework, called CloudSim Express, achieves extensible simulations while surpassing baselines with over a 71.43% reduction in code complexity and an 89.42% reduction in lines of code.

Fog and Edge computing extend cloud services to the proximity of end users, allowing many Internet of Things (IoT) use cases, particularly latency-critical applications. Smart devices, such as traffic and surveillance cameras, often do not have sufficient resources to process computation-intensive and latency-critical services. Hence, the constituent parts of services can be offloaded to nearby Edge/Fog resources for processing and storage. However, making offloading decisions for complex services in highly stochastic and dynamic environments is an important, yet difficult task. Recently, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has been used in many complex service offloading problems; however, existing techniques are most suitable for centralized environments, and their convergence to the best-suitable solutions is slow. In addition, constituent parts of services often have predefined data dependencies and quality of service constraints, which further intensify the complexity of service offloading. To solve these issues, we propose a distributed DRL technique following the actor-critic architecture based on Asynchronous Proximal Policy Optimization (APPO) to achieve efficient and diverse distributed experience trajectory generation. Also, we employ PPO clipping and V-trace techniques for off-policy correction for faster convergence to the most suitable service offloading solutions. The results obtained demonstrate that our technique converges quickly, offers high scalability and adaptability, and outperforms its counterparts by improving the execution time of heterogeneous services.

While static Love number vanish identically for Kerr black holes, we show that the corresponding dynamical tidal coefficients are generically non-zero and exhibit logarithmic behavior. The computational method employs a related but simpler scheme consistent with CFT descriptions, low-frequency regimes and post-Newtonian results. Function-as-a-Service is a cloud computing paradigm offering an event-driven execution model to applications. It features serverless attributes by eliminating resource management responsibilities from developers and offers transparent and on-demand scalability of applications. Typical serverless applications have stringent response time and scalability requirements and therefore rely on deployed services to provide quick and fault-tolerant feedback to clients. However, the FaaS paradigm suffers from cold starts as there is a non-negligible delay associated with on-demand function initialization. This work focuses on reducing the frequency of cold starts on the platform by using Reinforcement Learning. Our approach uses Q-learning and considers metrics such as function CPU utilization, existing function instances, and response failure rate to proactively initialize functions in advance based on the expected demand. The proposed solution was implemented on Kubeless and was evaluated using a normalised real-world function demand trace with matrix multiplication as the workload. The results demonstrate a favourable performance of the RL-based agent when compared to Kubeless' default policy and function keep-alive policy by improving throughput by up to 8.81% and reducing computation load and resource wastage by up to 55% and 37%, respectively, which is a direct outcome of reduced cold starts., Comment: 13 figures, 10 pages, 3 tables

Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) introduces a lightweight, function-based cloud execution model that finds its relevance in applications like IoT-edge data processing and anomaly detection. While CSP offer a near-infinite function elasticity, these applications often experience fluctuating workloads and stricter performance constraints. A typical CSP strategy is to empirically determine and adjust desired function instances, "autoscaling", based on monitoring-based thresholds such as CPU or memory, to cope with demand and performance. However, threshold configuration either requires expert knowledge, historical data or a complete view of environment, making autoscaling a performance bottleneck lacking an adaptable solution.RL algorithms are proven to be beneficial in analysing complex cloud environments and result in an adaptable policy that maximizes the expected objectives. Most realistic cloud environments usually involve operational interference and have limited visibility, making them partially observable. A general solution to tackle observability in highly dynamic settings is to integrate Recurrent units with model-free RL algorithms and model a decision process as a POMDP. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate a model-free Recurrent RL agent for function autoscaling and compare it against the model-free Proximal Policy Optimisation (PPO) algorithm. We explore the integration of a LSTM network with the state-of-the-art PPO algorithm to find that under our experimental and evaluation settings, recurrent policies were able to capture the environment parameters and show promising results for function autoscaling. We further compare a PPO-based autoscaling agent with commercially used threshold-based function autoscaling and posit that a LSTM-based autoscaling agent is able to improve throughput by 18%, function execution by 13% and account for 8.4% more function instances., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables

In this work, we analyze the combinatorial properties of cylinders and subdivisions of augmented semi-simplicial sets. These constructions are obtained as particular cases of a certain action from a co-semi-simplicial set on an augmented semi-simplicial set. We also consider cylinders and subdivision operators in the algebraic setting of augmented sequences of integers. These operators are defined either by taking an action of matrices on sequences of integers (using binomial matrices) or by taking the simple product of sequences and matrices. We compare both the geometric and algebraic contexts using the sequential cardinal functor $|\cdot|$, which associates the augmented sequence $|X|=(|X_n|)_{n\geq -1}$ to each augmented semi-simplicial finite set $X$. Here, $|X_n|$ stands for the finite cardinality of the set of $n$-simplices $X_n$. The sequential cardinal functor transforms the action of any co-semi-simplicial set into the action of a matrix on a sequence. Therefore, we can easily calculate the number of simplices of cylinders or subdivisions of an augmented semi-simplicial set. Alternatively, instead of using the action of a matrix on a sequence, we can also compute suitable matrices and consider the product of an augmented sequence of integers and an infinite augmented matrix of integers. The calculation of these matrices is related mainly to binomial, chain-power-set, and Stirling numbers. General relativity (GR) will be imminently challenged by upcoming experiments in the strong gravity regime, including those testing the energy extraction mechanisms for black holes. Motivated by this, we explore magnetospheric models and black hole jet emissions in MOdified Gravity (MOG) scenarios. Specifically, we construct new power emitting magnetospheres in a Kerr-MOG background which are found to depend non-trivially on the MOG deformation parameter. This may allow for high-precision tests of GR.
