Despite the mounting anticipation for the quantum revolution, the success of Quantum Machine Learning (QML) in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era hinges on a largely unexplored factor: the generalization error bound, a cornerstone of robust and reliable machine learning models. Current QML research, while exploring novel algorithms and applications extensively, is predominantly situated in the context of noise-free, ideal quantum computers. However, Quantum Circuit (QC) operations in NISQ-era devices are susceptible to various noise sources and errors. In this article, we conduct a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) to explore the state-of-the-art generalization bound for supervised QML in NISQ-era and analyze the latest practices in the field. Our study systematically summarizes the existing computational platforms with quantum hardware, datasets, optimization techniques, and the common properties of the bounds found in the literature. We further present the performance accuracy of various approaches in classical benchmark datasets like the MNIST and IRIS datasets. The SMS also highlights the limitations and challenges in QML in the NISQ era and discusses future research directions to advance the field. Using a detailed Boolean operators query in five reliable indexers, we collected 544 papers and filtered them to a small set of 37 relevant articles. This filtration was done following the best practice of SMS with well-defined research questions and inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Information transfer through electromagnetic waves is an important problem that touches a variety of technologically relevant applications, including computing and telecommunications. Prior attempts to establish limits on optical information transfer have treated waves propagating through known photonic structures (including vacuum). In this article, we address fundamental questions concerning optimal information transfer in photonic devices. Combining information theory, wave scattering, and optimization theory, we formulate bounds on the maximum Shannon capacity that may be achieved by structuring senders, receivers, and their environment. Allowing for arbitrary structuring leads to a non-convex problem that is significantly more difficult than its fixed structure counterpart, which is convex and satisfies a known "water-filling" solution. We derive a geometry-agnostic convex relaxation of the problem that elucidates fundamental physics and scaling behavior of Shannon capacity with respect to device parameters and the importance of structuring for enhancing capacity. We also show that in regimes where communication is dominated by power insertion requirements, maximum Shannon capacity maps to a biconvex optimization problem in the basis of singular vectors of the Green's function. This problem admits analytical solutions that give physically intuitive interpretations of channel and power allocation and reveals how Shannon capacity varies with signal-to-noise ratio. Proof of concept numerical examples show that bounds are within an order of magnitude of achievable device performance and successfully predict the scaling of performance with channel noise. We present a general framework for the computation of structure-agnostic bounds on the performance of passive cloaks over a nonzero bandwidth. We apply this framework in 2D to the canonical scenario of cloaking a circular object. We find that perfect cloaking using a finite-sized isotropic cloak is impossible over any bandwidth, with the bounds scaling linearly with the bandwidth before saturating due to the finite size of the cloak and the presence of material loss. The bounds also exhibit linear scaling with material loss in the cloak and linear scaling with the inverse of the radial thickness of the design region before saturation due to finite-size effects or the presence of material loss. The formulation could readily find applications in the development of cloaking devices, setting expectations and benchmarks for optimal performance.

To meet the ever-increasing demand for higher data rates, 5G and 6G technologies are shifting transceivers to higher carrier frequencies, to support wider bandwidths and more antenna elements. Nevertheless, this solution poses several key challenges: i) increasing the carrier frequency and bandwidth leads to greater channel frequency selectivity in time and frequency domains, and ii) the greater the number of antennas the greater the the pilot overhead for channel estimation and the more prohibitively complex it becomes to determine the optimal precoding matrix. This paper presents two deep-learning frameworks to solve these issues. Firstly, we propose a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) that is based on image super-resolution and captures the correlations between the transmitting and receiving antennas and the frequency domains to combat frequency selectivity. Secondly, we devise a deep learning-based framework to combat the time selectivity of the channel that treats channel aging as a distortion that can be mitigated through deep learning-based image restoration techniques. The uplink of 5G networks allows selecting the transmit waveform between cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) and discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM), which is appealing for cell-edge users using high-frequency bands, since it shows a smaller peak-to-average power ratio, and allows a higher transmit power. Nevertheless, DFT-S-OFDM exhibits a higher block error rate (BLER) which complicates an optimal waveform selection. In this paper, we propose an intelligent waveform-switching mechanism based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). In this proposal, a learning agent aims at maximizing a function built using available throughput percentiles in real networks. Said percentiles are weighted so as to improve the cell-edge users' service without dramatically reducing the cell average. Aggregated measurements of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and timing advance (TA), available in real networks, are used in the procedure. We show, both analytically and numerically, that non-Gaussian tails in the probability density function of curvature perturbations arise in ultra-slow-roll inflation from the $\delta N$ formalism, without invoking stochastic inflation. Previously reported discrepancies between both approaches are a consequence of not correctly accounting for momentum perturbations. The first measurements of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections for the production of single top quarks in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV are presented. The data used were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The analysed events contain one muon and one electron in the final state. A cross section of $84.1\pm 2.1(\mathrm{stat})\,^{+9.8}_{-10.2}(\mathrm{syst})\pm 3.3(\mathrm{lumi})$ pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. For the differential measurements, a fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance. We present a rigorous method for deriving limits on Raman scattering in structured media. We exploit this framework to constrain the maximum Raman signal resulting from a planewave incident on two experimentally relevant systems, consisting of either a single Raman molecule in the vicinity of a structured medium or a designable Raman medium (a distribution of Raman molecules). Results pertaining to metallic and dielectric structures illustrate the efficacy of structural optimization and the importance of accounting and co-designing for the nonlinear interplay between pump and signal fields. In particular, we show that treating the pump-focusing and signal-extraction processes separately, as has been done in prior works, leads to highly unrealistic predictions of achievable enhancements. There has been a paradigm shift from the well-known laws of thermal radiation derived over a century ago, valid only when the length scales involved are much larger than the thermal wavelength (around 10 $\mu$m at room temperature), to a general framework known as fluctuational electrodynamics that allows calculations of radiative heat transfer for arbitrary sizes and length scales. Near-field radiative heat transfer and thermal emission in systems of sub-wavelength size can exhibit super-Planckian behaviour, i.e. flux rates several orders of magnitude larger than that predicted by the Stefan-Boltzmann (or blackbody) limit. These effects can be combined with novel materials, e.g. low-dimensional or topological systems, to yield even larger modifications and spectral and/or directional selectivity. We introduce briefly the context and the main steps that have led to the current boom of ideas and applications. We then discuss the original and impactful works gathered in the associated Special Topic collection, which provides an overview of the flourishing field of nanoscale thermal radiation.

We exploit fluctuational electrodynamics to present trace expressions for the torque experienced by arbitrary objects in a passive, nonabsorbing, rotationally invariant background environment. We present trace expressions for equilibrium Casimir torque which complement recently derived nonequilibrium torque expressions and explicate their relation to the Casimir free energy. We then use the derived trace expressions to calculate, via Lagrange duality, semianalytic structure-agnostic bounds on the Casimir torque between an anisotropic (reciprocal or nonreciprocal) dipolar particle and a macroscopic body composed of a local isotropic electric susceptibility, separated by vacuum.

We propose a spectral-averaging procedure that enables computation of bandwidth-integrated local density of states (LDOS) from a single scattering calculation, and exploit it to investigate the minimum extinction achievable from dipolar sources over finite bandwidths in structured media. Structure-agnostic extinction bounds are derived, providing analytical insights into scaling laws and fundamental design tradeoffs with implications to bandwidth and material selection. We find that perfect LDOS suppression over a finite bandwidth $\Delta\omega$ is impossible. Inspired by limits which predict nontrivial $\sqrt{\Delta\omega}$ scaling in systems with material dissipation, we show that pseudogap edge states of quasi-1d bullseye gratings can -- by simultaneously minimizing material absorption and radiation -- yield arbitrarily close to perfect LDOS suppression in the limit of vanishing bandwidth.

The NV$^-$ color center in diamond has been extensively investigated for quantum sensing, computation, and communication applications. Nonetheless, charge-state decay from the NV$^-$ to its neutral counterpart the NV$^0$ detrimentally affects the robustness of the NV$^-$ center and remains to be fully overcome. In this work, we provide an $ab~initio$ formalism for accurately estimating the rate of charge-state decay of color centers in wide-bandgap semiconductors. Our formalism employs density functional theory calculations in the context of thermal equilibrium. We illustrate the method using the transition of NV$^-$ to NV$^0$ in the presence of substitutional N [see Z. Yuan $et~al$., PRR 2, 033263 (2020)].

Recent advances in fundamental performance limits for power quantities based on Lagrange duality are proving to be a powerful theoretical tool for understanding electromagnetic wave phenomena. To date, however, in any approach seeking to enforce a high degree of physical reality, the linearity of the wave equation plays a critical role. In this manuscript, we generalize the current quadratically constrained quadratic program framework for evaluating linear photonics limits to incorporate nonlinear processes under the undepleted pump approximation. Via the exemplary objective of enhancing second harmonic generation in a (free-form) wavelength-scale structure, we illustrate a model constraint scheme that can be used in conjunction with standard convex relaxations to bound performance in the presence of nonlinear dynamics. Representative bounds are found to anticipate features observed in optimized structures discovered via computational inverse design. By applying a hydrodynamic representation of non-relativistic scalar electrodynamics to the superconducting order parameter, we predict a negative (attractive) pressure between planar superconducting bodies. For conventional superconductors with London penetration depth $\lambda_\text{L} \approx 100 \text{ nm}$, the pressure reaches tens of $\text{N/mm}^2$ at angstrom separations. The resulting surface energies are in better agreement with experimental values than those predicted by the Hartree-Fock theory, and the emergent electric-field screening length is comparable to that of the Thomas-Fermi theory. The model circumvents the bulk limitations of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer and Ginzburg-Landau theories to the analysis of superconducting quantum devices., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Recent advances in photonic optimization have enabled calculation of performance bounds for a wide range of electromagnetic objectives, albeit restricted to single-material systems. Motivated by growing theoretical interest and fabrication advances, we present a framework to bound the performance of photonic heterostructures and apply it to investigate maximum absorption characteristics of multilayer films and compact, free-form multi-material scatterers. Limits predict trends seen in topology-optimized geometries -- often coming within factors of two of specific designs -- and may be exploited in conjunction with inverse designs to predict when heterostructures are expected to outperform their optimal single-material counterparts., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We revisit the idea that the inflaton may have dissipated part of its energy into a thermal bath during inflation, considering monomial inflationary potentials and three different forms of dissipation rate. Using a numerical Fokker-Planck approach to describe the stochastic dynamics of inflationary fluctuations, we confront this scenario with current bounds on the spectrum of curvature fluctuations and primordial gravitational waves. We also obtain purely analytical approximations that improve over previously used ones in the small dissipation regime for the amplitude of the spectrum and its tilt. We show that only our numerical Fokker-Planck method is accurate, fast and precise enough to test these models against current data. We advocate its use in future studies of warm inflation. We also apply the stochastic inflation formalism to this scenario, finding that the resulting spectrum is the same as the one obtained with standard perturbation theory. We discuss the origin and convenience of using a commonly implemented large thermal correction to the primordial spectrum and the implications of such a term for a specific scenario. Charge traps in the semiconductor bulk (bulk charge traps) make it difficult to predict the electric field within wide-bandgap semiconductors. The issue is the daunting number of bulk charge-trap candidates which means the treatment of bulk charge traps is generally qualitative or uses generalized models that do not consider the trap's particular electronic structure. The electric field within a wide-bandgap semiconductor is nonetheless a crucial quantity in determining the operation of semiconductor devices and the performance of solid-state single-photon emitters embedded within the semiconductor devices. In this work we accurately compute the average electric field measured at the location of N$V^-$ charged defects for the substitutional N (N$_\text{C}$) concentration of $n_{\text{N}_\text{C}} \approx 1.41\times10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$ for the commonly used oxygen-terminated diamond (see [D. A. Broadway $et$ $al$., Nature Electronics 1, 502 (2018)]). We achieve this result by evaluating the leading-order contribution to the electric field far away from the surface, which comes from the N$_\text{C}$ defects that induce the ionization of the N$V^-$. Our results use density-functional theory (DFT) and the principle of band bending. Our work has the potential to aid both in the prediction of the functioning of semiconductor devices and in the prediction and correction of the spectral diffusion that often plagues the optical frequencies of solid-state single-photon emitters upon repeated photoexcitation measurements. Our results for the timescales involved in thermally driven charge transfer also have the potential to aid in investigations of charge dynamics.

The treatment of complex geometries in Computational Fluid Dynamics applications is a challenging endeavor, which immersed boundary and cut-cell techniques can significantly simplify by alleviating the meshing process required by body-fitted meshes. These methods however introduce new challenges, as the formulation of accurate and well-posed discrete operators becomes nontrivial. Here, a conservative cartesian cut cell method is proposed for the solution of the incompressible Navier--Stokes equation on staggered Cartesian grids. Emphasis is set on the structure of the discrete operators, designed to mimic the properties of the continuous ones while retaining a nearest-neighbor stencil. For convective transport, a divergence is proposed and shown to also be skew-symmetric as long as the divergence-free condition is satisfied, ensuring mass, momentum and kinetic energy conservation (the latter in the inviscid limit). For viscous transport, conservative and symmetric operators are proposed for Dirichlet boundary conditions. Symmetry ensures the existence of a sink term (viscous dissipation) in the discrete kinetic energy budget, which is beneficial for stability. The cut-cell discretization possesses the much desired summation-by-parts (SBP) properties. In addition, it is fully conservative, mathematically provably stable and supports arbitrary geometries. The accuracy and robustness of the method are then demonstrated with flows past a circular cylinder and an airfoil.

The electromagnetic local density of states (LDOS) is crucial to many aspects of photonics engineering, from enhancing emission of photon sources to radiative heat transfer and photovoltaics. We present a framework for evaluating upper bounds on LDOS in structured media that can handle arbitrary bandwidths and accounts for critical wave scattering effects with no heuristic approximations. The bounds are solely determined by the bandwidth, material susceptibility, and device footprint, with no assumptions on geometry. We derive an analytical expression for the maximum LDOS consistent with the conservation of energy across the entire design domain, which upon benchmarking with topology-optimized structures is shown to be nearly tight for large devices. Novel scaling laws for maximum LDOS enhancement are found: the bounds saturate to a finite value with increasing susceptibility and scale as the quartic root of the bandwidth for semi-infinite structures made of lossy materials, with direct implications on material selection and design applications., Comment: Corrected minor typos throughout paper; corrected mislabel of inverse designs in Figure 1; added full Supplementary Information; added acknowledgments

We study the generation of a localized peak in the primordial spectrum of curvature perturbations from a transient dissipative phase during inflation, leading to a large population of primordial black holes. The enhancement of the power spectrum occurs due to stochastic thermal noise sourcing curvature fluctuations. We solve the stochastic system of Einstein equations for many realizations of the noise and obtain the distribution for the curvature power spectrum. We then propose a method to find its expectation value using a deterministic system of differential equations. In addition, we find a single stochastic equation whose analytic solution helps to understand the main features of the spectrum. Finally, we derive a complete expression and a numerical estimate for the energy density of the stochastic background of gravitational waves induced at second order in perturbation theory. This includes the gravitational waves induced during inflation, during the subsequent radiation epoch and their mixing. The process of thermalization in many-body systems is driven by complex interactions among sub-systems and with the surrounding environment. Here we lay the theoretical foundations for the active control of local thermal states in arbitrary non-reciprocal systems close to their equilibrium state. In particular we describe how to (i) force some part of the system to evolve according to a prescribed law during the relaxation process (i.e. thermal targeting probem), (ii) insulate some elements from the rest of the system or (iii) synchronize their evolution during the relaxation process. We also derive the general conditions a system must fulfill in order that some parts relax toward a minimal temperature with a minimum energetic cost or relax toward a prescribed temperature with a minimum time. Finally, we consider several representative examples in the context of systems exchanging heat radiatively.

We exploit fluctuational electrodynamics to present trace expressions for the torque experienced by arbitrary objects in a passive, non-absorbing, rotationally invariant background environment. Specializing to a single object, this formalism, together with recently developed techniques for calculating bounds via Lagrange duality, is then used to derive limits on the maximum Casimir torque that a single object with an isotropic electric susceptibility can experience when out of equilibrium with its surrounding environment. The maximum torque achievable at any wavelength is shown to scale in proportion to body volumes in both subwavelength (quasistatics) and macroscopic (ray optics) settings, and come within an order of magnitude of achievable torques on topology optimized bodies. Finally, we discuss how to extend the formalism to multiple bodies, deriving expressions for the torque experienced by two subwavelength particles in proximity to one another.

Efficient and accurate interatomic potential functions are critical to computational study of materials while searching for structures with desired properties. Traditionally, potential functions or energy landscapes are designed by experts based on theoretical or heuristic knowledge. Here, we propose a new approach to leverage strongly typed parallel genetic programming (GP) for potential function discovery. We use a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with NSGA-III selection to optimize individual age, fitness, and complexity through symbolic regression. With a DFT dataset of 863 unique carbon allotrope configurations drawn from 858 carbon structures, the generated potentials are able to predict total energies within $\pm 7.70$ eV at low computational cost while generalizing well across multiple carbon structures. Inclusive and normalised differential cross sections measurements are presented for the production of single top quarks in association with a W boson, in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. For the inclusive measurement, a multivariate discriminant, exploiting the kinematic properties of the events, is used to separate the signal from the dominant t$\bar{\mathrm{t}}$ background. The resulting distributions are unfolded to particle-level and compared with predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD.
