Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a highly toxic and carcinogenic compound with significant environmental impact, necessitating effective treatment technologies. This study evaluates PCP removal mechanisms, including adsorption and biodegradation, during the startup of a horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass reactor (HAIB), and examines the impact of PCP concentration on microbial diversity using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The primary mechanism for PCP removal in the HAIB was adsorption, effectively described by the Freundlich isotherm model. Adsorption efficiency ranged from 86 to 104% for PCP concentrations between 0.2 and 5.0 mg/L, and 46% to 64% for concentrations between 0.098 and 0.05 mg/L. Additionally, PCP degradation intermediates such as 2,3-DCP and 2,6-DCP were detected, indicating that biodegradation also occurred in the HAIB. Organic matter degradation averaged 81 ± 9%, and methane content in the biogas averaged 46 ± 9%, confirming the anaerobic process. No inhibition of microbial activity was observed due to PCP toxicity, even at a PCP load of 5 mg PCP/g STV per day. While the archaeal community showed only slight changes, with similarity coefficients ranging from 88 to 95%, the bacterial community was significantly affected by PCP, with similarity coefficients ranging from 18 to 50%. Bacterial groups were responsible for the initial PCP degradation, while the archaeal community was involved in metabolizing the resulting byproducts. The use of indigenous inoculum from the Santos-São Vicente estuary demonstrated its potential for effective PCP removal. Polyurethane foam proved to be an effective support material, enhancing the adsorption process and reducing PCP toxicity to the microbial consortium. The present study aims to evaluate the growth potential of the P. aeruginosa ATCC9027 strain with molasses as the sole carbon source to produce rhamnolipids. The influence of the cultivation time and substrate concentration on biosurfactant production was investigated by using a complete 3-level factorial design, with the rhamnolipid concentration as the variable response. The strain was able to produce the biosurfactant in all design conditions tested, producing 758.04 mg/L rhamnolipids with 7% v/v substrate concentration in a cultivation time of 120 h. The substrate concentration used in the cultivation step directly influenced the biosurfactant production, and, even with the decrease in biomass growth, the biosurfactant production continued to increase. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) revealed the presence of 62.3% mono- (RL1) and 37.6% di-rhamnolipids (RL3). The stability tests showed that the biosurfactant has good performance in extreme conditions of temperature, pH and saline concentration. The emulsification index was also evaluated for several oils and hydrocarbons, obtaining emulsification rates of up to 84.9% for the burnt motor oil. In addition, rhamnolipid showed a good ability to remove spilled oil from the sand, removing 58.51% of burnt motor oil and 70.09% of post-frying soybean oil. The results indicate that molasses, an agro-industrial residue abundant in Brazil, can be used as the only carbon source for quality rhamnolipid production when under optimized conditions, therefore presenting itself as a management option for this residue and, at the same time, providing the production product with high added value., (© 2022. Abstract: Radiation workers are normally exposed to doses resulting from their day-to-day activities. Besides that, background radiation, such as radon, can contribute to the exposure rates. The radionuclide 222Rn is a noble gas belonging to the uranium series, and its indoor concentration in the air depends on the exhalation from surrounding soil and the exhalation from building materials. Radon exhaling from porous building materials containing high uranium concentrations can become a significant exposure factor in areas with limited ventilation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the 222Rn concentrations in the radiochemistry and radiometric laboratories in the nuclear reactor building of the Nuclear Reactor Center (CERPq) located in the Institute of Nuclear and Energy Research (IPEN), São Paulo, Brazil. Measurements were done using a Radon Gas Monitor, model RAD7, equipped with a solid-state alpha detector. A passive method (SSNTD) was also used, consisting of square pieces of C-39 foils (2.5 cm × 2.5 cm) placed within small diffusion chambers. The CR-39 detectors were etched in KOH 30% solution at 80 °C for 5.5 h in a constant-temperature bath. After etching, the detectors were washed, dried, and scanned using a microscope to obtain the track density measurements. The activity concentrations measured with both techniques varied from 52 to 103 Bq m-3 in the studied areas of the CERPq. Sensors and biosensors play a key role as an analytical tool for the rapid, reliable, and early diagnosis of human diseases. Such devices can also be employed for monitoring environmental pollutants in air and water in an expedited way. More recently, nanomaterials have been proposed as an alternative in sensor fabrication to achieve gains in performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and portability. In this direction, the use of cellulose nanomaterials (CNM), such as cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and bacterial cellulose (BC), has experienced rapid growth in the fabrication of varied types of sensors. The advantageous properties are related to the supramolecular structures that form the distinct CNM, their biocompatibility, and highly reactive functional groups that enable surface functionalization. The CNM can be applied as hydrogels and xerogels, thin films, nanopapers and other structures interesting for sensor design. Besides, CNM can be combined with other materials (e.g., nanoparticles, enzymes, carbon nanomaterials, etc.) and varied substrates to advanced sensors and biosensors fabrication. This review explores recent advances on CNM and composites applied in the fabrication of optical, electrical, electrochemical, and piezoelectric sensors for detecting analytes ranging from environmental pollutants to human physiological parameters. Emphasis is given to how cellulose nanomaterials can contribute to enhance the performance of varied sensors as well as expand novel sensing applications, which could not be easily achieved using standard materials. Finally, challenges and future trends on the use of cellulose-based materials in sensors and biosensors are also discussed.

The down flow structured bed bioreactor (DFSBR) was applied to treat synthetic acid mine drainage (AMD) to reduce sulfate, increase the pH and precipitate metals in solutions (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn) using vinasse as an electron donor for sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). DFSBR achieved sulfate removal efficiencies between 55 and 91%, removal of Co and Ni were obtained with efficiencies greater than 80%, while Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn were removed with average efficiencies of 70, 80, 73 and 60%, respectively. Sulfate reduction increased pH from moderately acidic to 6.7-7.5. Modelling data confirmed the experimental results and metal sulfide precipitation was the mainly responsible for metal removal. The main genera responsible for sulfate and metal reduction were Geobacter and Desulfovibrio while fermenters were Parabacteroides and Sulfurovum. The prioritization of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for monitoring programmes and/or environmental risk assessment (ERA) purposes is based on several criteria, including environmental occurrence data. However, data on API occurrence in Brazilian surface freshwaters are still scarce. The Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) provides several medicines free-of-charge, including medications that have bezafibrate, fluoxetine and levothyroxine as the API. Thus, our objective was to investigate the occurrence of bezafibrate, fluoxetine and levothyroxine in samples collected at sampling sites included in the surface freshwater monitoring program of the São Paulo State Environmental Agency (CETESB); caffeine was also included in the analysis because it is commonly used as an anthropogenic marker of aquatic environment contamination. Monitoring results showed that levothyroxine was not found in any of the analysed samples. Caffeine was ubiquitous in the analysed samples, thus indicating anthropic contamination in the studied water bodies. Caffeine and bezafibrate presented risk quotient (RQ) < 1 for all the sampling sites and periods evaluated in this study. For fluoxetine, RQs > 1 were found in all water samples in which this API was found, indicating a potential risk for freshwater pelagic biota. Thus, fluoxetine should be regulated in São Paulo State in order to protect the aquatic biota. Additional occurrence studies in other Brazilian states are still needed to evaluate if fluoxetine is a nationwide pollutant.

Bacterial quorum sensing is the communication that takes place between bacteria as they secrete certain molecules into the intercellular medium that later get absorbed by the secreting cells themselves and by others. Depending on cell density, this uptake has the potential to alter gene expression and thereby affect global properties of the community. We consider the case of multiple bacterial species coexisting, referring to each one of them as a genotype and adopting the usual denomination of the molecules they collectively secrete as public goods. A crucial problem in this setting is characterizing the coevolution of genotypes as some of them secrete public goods (and pay the associated metabolic costs) while others do not but may nevertheless benefit from the available public goods. We introduce a network model to describe genotype interaction and evolution when genotype fitness depends on the production and uptake of public goods. The model comprises a random graph to summarize the possible evolutionary pathways the genotypes may take as they interact genetically with one another, and a system of coupled differential equations to characterize the behavior of genotype abundance in time. We study some simple variations of the model analytically and more complex variations computationally. Our results point to a simple trade-off affecting the long-term survival of those genotypes that do produce public goods. This trade-off involves, on the producer side, the impact of producing and that of absorbing the public good. On the nonproducer side, it involves the impact of absorbing the public good as well, now compounded by the molecular compatibility between the producer and the nonproducer. Depending on how these factors turn out, producers may or may not survive.

The origins of the large differences observed in the rates at which diverse particles are conveyed along axonal microtubules are still a matter of debate in the literature. There is evidence that certain neurodegenerative diseases may be triggered by disturbances in the related transport processes. Motivated by this, we employ a model to investigate mobility properties of certain cargoes whose dynamics are coupled with that of molecular motors on crowded microtubules. For certain initial and boundary conditions, we use the method of characteristics to resolve perturbatively the pair of equations of Burgers type resulting from a mean-field approach to the original microscopic stochastic model. Extensions to nonperturbative limits are explored numerically. In this context, we are able to figure out conditions under which the cargoes' average velocities may differ up to orders of magnitude just by changing the number of motors on the considered track. We then discuss possibilities to connect these theoretical predictions with available experimental data about axon transport.

The present work aims to evaluate the crystalline phases and microstructure of a TiC-Ti₃SiC₂ ceramic composite, obtained by mechanical alloying of Ti, C and Si powders and subsequent sintering. A mechanical alloying technique in a planetary ball mill for 1, 10, 50, 100 and 200 h using Ti, Si and C powders with molar ratios of 3:1:2 as feedstock in argon (Ar) gas was employed to prepare nano-sized Ti-Si-C powders. TiC crystallite size and lattice strain were evaluated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and the morphological characteristics and particle size distribution were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). After milling, a reduction of the average particle size and crystallinity is observed. Furthermore, after 10 h of milling time, TiC starts to crystallize. The powder mixture obtained after 200 h of milling was compacted and sintered at 1200 °C under controlled atmosphere, for 15 min, 2 h or 4 h with a heating rate of 5 °C/min. Almost full densification of samples sintered for 2 h and 4 h has been achieved, with relative densities close to 98.8±0.2% and TiC and Ti₃SiC₂ as crystalline phases with an average crystallite size of TiC near 0.7 μ m. Rietveld refinement indicates that the majority TiC-cubic phase (>85 vol%) presents a unit cell volume of 8.03 nm³ after sintering at 1200 °C. Despite the maintenance of the volume of the hexagonal unit cell of Ti₃SiC₂, (15.05 nm³), the increase of the isothermal sintering time resulted in an increase of the lattice parameter "a", from 0.315 nm to 0.320 nm, and a reduction of the lattice parameter "c" from 1.750 nm to 1.705 nm. The control of the changes in the residual stresses within the TiC matrix and the Ti₃SiC₂ precipitates, which is associated with the deformation in the lattice parameters, must be controlled to achieve high fracture toughness in the composite.

The pharmaceuticals bisoprolol (BIS), sotalol (SOT), and ranitidine (RAN) are among the most consumed pharmaceuticals worldwide and are frequently detected in different aquatic ecosystems. However, very few ecotoxicity data are available in the literature for them. To help fill these data gaps, toxicity tests with the algae Raphidocelis subcapitata, the macrophyte Lemna minor, the cnidarian Hydra attenuata, the crustacean Daphnia similis, and the fish Danio rerio were performed for assessing the ecotoxicity of these pharmaceuticals. Standard, as well as non-standard endpoint, was evaluated, including the locomotor behavior of D. rerio larvae. Results obtained for SOT and RAN showed that acute adverse effects are not expected to occur on aquatic organisms at the concentrations at which these pharmaceuticals are usually found in fresh surface waters. On the other hand, BIS was classified as hazardous to the environment in the acute III category. Locomotor behavior of D. rerio larvae was not affected by BIS and RAN. A disturbance on the total swimming distance at the dark cycle was observed only for larvae exposed to the highest test concentration of 500 mg L -1 of SOT. D. similis reproduction was affected by BIS with an EC 10 of 3.6 (0.1-34.0) mg L -1 . A risk quotient (RQ) of 0.04 was calculated for BIS in fresh surface water, considering a worst-case scenario. To the best of our knowledge, this study presents the first chronic toxicity data with BIS on non-target organisms.

Pharmaceuticals are frequently detected in aquatic environments as mixtures and can cause toxic effects to non-target organisms. We aimed to evaluate the single and mixture effects of the pharmaceuticals metformin, bisoprolol, ranitidine and sotalol using Daphnia similis and Danio rerio. In addition, we aimed to test the predictive accuracy of the mathematical models concentration addition and independent action and to evaluate the nature of the possible toxicological interactions among these pharmaceuticals using the combination index-isobologram model. The acute toxicity of these four pharmaceuticals individually and of their binary mixtures were evaluated using the D. similis tests. Developmental and behavioral effects induced by the pharmaceuticals in quaternary mixtures were evaluated using D. rerio embryos. We observed that most of the binary mixture effects were in the zone between the effects predicted by the concentration addition and the independent action model. The combination index-isobologram model showed to be adequate to describe the nature of possible interactions occurring between the combined pharmaceuticals. Developmental and behavioral acute adverse effects seem not to be induced by the joint action of the quaternary mixture of the evaluated pharmaceuticals on D. rerio embryos, at the concentrations at which they are usually found in surface fresh waters. However, from the results obtained with D. similis, we can conclude that assessing the ecological risk based on the effects of individual pharmaceuticals can underestimate the risk level posed by these environmental contaminants., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Actual acid mine drainage (AMD) containing a high concentration of sulfate (∼1,000 mg·L -1 ), dissolved metals, uranium, rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) was treated using a down-flow fixed-structured bed biological reactor (DFSBR). The reactor was operated in a continuous flow mode for 175 days and the temperature was maintained at 30 °C. The synthetic AMD was gradually replaced by the actual AMD in 20, 50 and 75% of the total medium volume. Sugarcane vinasse was used as the electron donor and the influent pH of the reactor was decreased from 6.9 to 4.6 until the system collapsed. REY elements and transition metals were removed from the actual AMD and precipitated in the down-flow fixed-structured bed reactor. Sulfate reduction achieved 67 ± 22% in Phase II and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was above 56% in Phases I and II. Removal of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Y was higher than 70% in both Phases II and III while Fe, Al, Si and Mn were removed with efficiencies of 79, 67, 48 and 25%, respectively. The results highlighted the potential use of DFSBR in the treatment of AMD, providing possibilities for simultaneous sulfate reduction and metal and REY recovery in a single unit.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is among the most serious threats to water and the typical alkali-based treatment costs are high. This study's main objective was the establishment of a highly efficient biological process using an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor to treat AMD based on a shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT) and lower organic matter input. The process was evaluated for a long-term operation (739 days) in terms of the influence of HRT (14-24 h), metal addition, sulfate loading rate (0.5-2.6 g SO 4 2-  l -1  d -1 ), and the COD/SO 4 2- ratio (0.67-1.0) using ethanol as the only electron donor at a pH of 4.0. Neutral effluent pH was achieved throughout the time apart from operational modifications. The reduction in HRT from 24 to 16 h and an increase in the sulfate loading rate (SLR) up to 2.25 g SO 4 2-  l -1  d -1 improved the sulfate removal to (92.1 ± 1.8)% with 80% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. However, the sulfate reduction was less than 80% when the HRT and SLR was changed to 14 h and 2.6 g SO 4 2-  l -1  d -1 , respectively. The oxidation of organic matter by sulfate reduction was greater than 50% regardless of the conditions imposed but the use of ethanol to treat AMD was more efficient when either the HRT was 16 h (1.5 g SO 4 2-  l -1  d -1 ) in the presence of Fe, Zn, and Cu or the HRT was 14 h (2.6 g SO 4 2-  l -1  d -1 ) but the COD/SO 4 2- ratio was reduced to 0.67. The fully optimized conditions of the UASB reactor were set at an HRT of 16 h, SLR of 1.5 g SO 4 2-  l -1  d -1 , and a COD/SO 4 2- ratio of 1.0.

Metformin (MET) is among the most consumed pharmaceuticals worldwide. This compound has been frequently detected in fresh surface water. However, ecotoxicological information for MET is still too limited, particularly regarding chronic and behavioral data. This study aimed to help filling these knowledge gaps, by carrying out both acute and chronic studies with four different test organisms from three different trophic levels. We assessed different endpoints, including the swimming behavior of Danio rerio larvae. We also derived both short-term and long-term environmental quality standards (EQS) for the protection of freshwater pelagic biota towards MET adverse effects. A risk quotient (RQ) was calculated for MET in fresh surface water, considering a worst-case scenario. Daphnia similis was by far the most sensitive species evaluated. An EC 10 of 4.4 mg L -1 was obtained from the reproduction test with D. similis. A long-term EQS of 88 μg L -1 was derived and a RQ of 0.38 was obtained. An ecological risk is not expected for the chronic exposure of pelagic freshwater species to MET, considering the endpoints and the standard bioassays usually recommended in standard protocols. However, endocrine disruptive effects and potential interactive effects of MET with other co-occurring contaminants cannot be ruled out. In this study, we obtained a composite based on carbon/iron oxide from red mud and PET (poly(ethylene terephthalate)) wastes by mechanical mixture (10, 15 and 20wt.% of PET powder/red mud) followed by a controlled thermal treatment at 400°C under air. XRD analyses revealed that the α-Fe2O3 is the main phase formed from red mud. TPR analyses showed that the iron oxide present in the composites undergoes reduction at lower temperature to form Fe(2+) species present in Fe3O4, indicating that the iron oxide in the composite can exhibit greater reactivity in the catalytic processes compared to the original red mud. In fact, catalytic tests showed that the composites presented higher capacity to remove methylene blue dye (MB), presenting about 90% of removal after 24h of reaction. The MB removal was also monitored by mass spectrometer with ionization via electrospray (ESI-MS), which demonstrated the occurrence of the oxidation process, showing the formation of MB oxidation products. The stability of the composites was confirmed after four reuse cycles. The results seem to indicate that PET carbon deposited over the iron oxide from red mud promotes adsorption of the contaminant allowing its contact with the iron atoms and their consequent reaction., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. The production of low-pH effluent with sulfate and metals is one of the biggest environmental concerns in the mining industry. The biological process for sulfate reduction has the potential to become a low-cost solution that enables the recovery of interesting compounds. The present study analyzed such a process in a horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactor, employing ethanol as the carbon and energy source. Results showed that a maximal efficiency in the removal of sulfate and ethanol could only be obtained by reducing the applied sulfate load (225.1 ± 38 g m(-3) d(-1)). This strategy led to over 75% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and sulfate removal. Among the COD/SO4(2-) studied ratios, 0.67 showed the most promising performance. The effluent's pH has naturally remained between 6.8 and 7.0 and the complete oxidation of the organic matter has been observed. Corrections of the influent pH or effluent recirculation did not show any significant effect on the COD and sulfate removal efficiency. Species closely related to strains of Clostridium sp. and species of Acidaminobacter hydrogenomorfans and Fusibacter paucivorans that can be related to the process of sulfate reduction were found in the HAIB reactors when the initial pH was 5 and the COD/SO4(2-) ratio increased to 1.0.

A novel bioreactor, employing a silicone membrane for microaeration, was studied for partial sulfide oxidation to elemental sulfur. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of using an internal silicone membrane reactor (ISMR) to treat dissolved sulfide and to characterize its microbial community. The ISMR is an effective system to eliminate sulfide produced in anaerobic reactors. Sulfide removal efficiencies reached 96 % in a combined anaerobic/microaerobic reactor and significant sulfate production did not occur. The oxygen transfer was strongly influenced by air pressure and flow. Pyrosequencing analysis indicated various sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) affiliated to the species Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, Sulfuricurvum kujiense and Pseudomonas stutzeri attached to the membrane and also indicated similarity between the biomass deposited on the membrane wall and the biomass drawn from the material support, supported the establishment of SOB in an anaerobic sludge under microaerobic conditions. Furthermore, these results showed that the reactor configuration can develop SOB under microaerobic conditions and can improve and reestablish the sulfide conversion to elemental sulfur.

This paper assesses a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) regarding the technology used, as well as organic matter and nutrient removal efficiencies aiming to optimize the treatment processes involved and wastewater reclamation. The WWTP consists of a dissolved air flotation (DAF) system, an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, an aerated-facultative pond (AFP) and a chemical-DAF system. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) (97.9 ± 1.0%), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (98.6 ± 1.0%) and oil and grease (O&G) (91.1 ± 5.2%) at the WWTP, the nitrogen concentration of 17 ± 11 mg N-NH3 and phosphorus concentration of 1.34 ± 0.93 mg PO4(-3)/L in the final effluent indicate that the processes used are suitable to comply with discharge standards in water bodies. Nitrification and denitrification tests conducted using biomass collected at three AFP points indicated that nitrification and denitrification could take place in the pond.

Generally, roofs are the best candidates for rainwater harvesting. In this context, the correct evaluation of the quantity and quality of runoff from roofs is essential to effectively design rainwater harvesting systems. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a kinematic wave based numerical model in simulating runoff on sloping roofs, by comparing the numerical results with the ones obtained from laboratory rainfall simulations on a real-scale Lusa ceramic tile roof. For all studied slopes, simulated discharge hydrographs had a good adjust to observed ones. Coefficient of determination and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency values were close to 1.0. Particularly, peak discharges, times to peak, peak durations and runoff volumes were very well simulated.

Quantum dot (Qdot) biosensors have consistently provided valuable information to researchers about cellular activity due to their unique fluorescent properties. Many of the most popularly used Qdots contain cadmium, posing the risk of toxicity that could negate their attractive optical properties. The design of a non-cytotoxic probe usually involves multiple components and a complex synthesis process. In this paper, the design and synthesis of a non-cytotoxic Qdot-chitosan nanogel composite using straight-forward cyanogen bromide (CNBr) coupling is reported. The probe was characterized by spectroscopy (UV-Vis, fluorescence), microscopy (Fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering. This activatable ("OFF"/"ON") probe contains a core-shell Qdot (CdS:Mn/ZnS) capped with dopamine, which acts as a fluorescence quencher and a model drug. Dopamine capped "OFF" Qdots can undergo ligand exchange with intercellular glutathione, which turns the Qdots "ON" to restore fluorescence. These Qdots were then coated with chitosan (natural biocompatible polymer) functionalized with folic acid (targeting motif) and Fluorescein Isothiocyanate (FITC; fluorescent dye). To demonstrate cancer cell targetability, the interaction of the probe with cells that express different folate receptor levels was analyzed, and the cytotoxicity of the probe was evaluated on these cells and was shown to be nontoxic even at concentrations as high as 100 mg/L.

This study presents a review of the investigated antihypertensives in different aquatic compartments. It aims to compare these data with those regarding ecotoxicity effects in order to find out ecotoxicological data gaps for these pharmaceuticals and to point out the need for future studies. In addition, part of this article is dedicated to the risk assessment of the parent compounds atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol and verapamil, which are of great environmental concern in terms of contamination levels and for which there are sufficient ecotoxicological data available. 79 articles were retrieved presenting quantization data for 34 different antihypertensives and/or their metabolites. Only 43 articles were found regarding acute and chronic ecotoxicological effects of antihypertensive drugs. The results indicated that the beta-blockers atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol are the antihypertensives most frequently detected in the aquatic environment. They are also the drugs which reached the highest maximum concentrations in surface waters in the data reported in the literature. The highest percentages of ecotoxicity data regarding antihypertensives were also related to these beta-blockers. On the other hand, there is clearly a lack of ecotoxicity data, especially the chronic ones, regarding other antihypertensives. The environmental risk assessment (ERA) showed that all three of the evaluated beta-blockers can pose a potential long-term risk for non-target organisms of both fresh and marine water species. However, more meaningful ecotoxicity data for antihypertensives, including saltwater species, are required to refine and enlarge these results. Antihypertensive pharmaceuticals, including the beta-blockers, are one of the most detected therapeutic classes in the environment. The ecotoxicity of propranolol hydrochloride and losartan potassium was evaluated, both individually and combined in a binary mixture, by using the Lemna minor growth inhibition test. The endpoints evaluated in the single-pharmaceutical tests were frond number, total frond area and fresh weight. For the evaluation of the mixture toxicity, the selected endpoint was frond number. Water quality criteria values (WQC) were derived for the protection of freshwater and saltwater pelagic communities regarding the effects induced by propranolol and losartan using ecotoxicological data from the literature, including our data. The risks associated with both pharmaceutical effects on non-target organisms were quantified through the measured environmental concentration (MEC)/predicted-no-effect concentration (PNEC) ratios. For propranolol, the total frond area was the most sensitive endpoint (EC50 = 77.3 mg L(-1)), while for losartan there was no statistically significant difference between the endpoints. Losartan is only slightly more toxic than propranolol. Both concentration addition and independent action models overestimated the mixture toxicity of the pharmaceuticals at all the effect concentration levels evaluated. The joint action of both pharmaceuticals showed an antagonistic interaction to L. minor. Derived WQC assumed lower values for propranolol than for losartan. The MEC/PNEC ratios showed that propranolol may pose a risk for the most sensitive aquatic species, while acceptable risks posed by losartan were estimated for most of aquatic matrices. To the authors knowledge these are the first data about losartan toxicity for L. minor.

This paper analyzes the influence of carbon source and inoculum origin on the dynamics of biomass adhesion to an inert support in anaerobic reactors fed with acid mine drainage. Formic acid, lactic acid and ethanol were used as carbon sources. Two different inocula were evaluated: one taken from an UASB reactor and other from the sediment of a uranium mine. The values of average colonization rates and the maximum biomass concentration (C(max)) were inversely proportional to the number of carbon atoms in each substrate. The highest C(max) value (0.35 g TVS g(-1) foam) was observed with formic acid and anaerobic sludge as inoculum. Maximum colonization rates (v(max)) were strongly influenced by the type of inoculum when ethanol and lactic acid were used. For both carbon sources, the use of mine sediment as inoculum resulted in a v(max) of 0.013 g TVS g(-1) foam day(-1), whereas 0.024 g TVS g(-1) foam day(-1) was achieved with anaerobic sludge., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. This paper describes the development of ZnO nanoparticles by a chemical method, to test them in the photocatalysis of the degradation of textile dyes, using Rhodamine B (RhB) as a probe reaction. The samples were submitted to different heat treatments in order to observe the annealing effects on the photocatalytical properties, surface decontamination and the consequent particle change, in terms of crystallinity. The as-prepared samples (ZOA) correspond to a metastable phase (oxy or hydroxy zinc acetate) and post annealing leads to ZnO crystallization. In spite of the XRD patterns showing only the ZnO phase for heat treatment at 100 degrees C, FTIR data show that carboxylate groups remains attached to the ZnO surface up to 300 degrees C. Up to 300 degrees C the presence of these carboxylate groups, provided by the synthesis method, showed to be more relevant to photoactivity than the specific surface area. At higher temperatures, crystallinity becomes the dominant factor and an increasing of crystallinity favors the photoactivity.
