1. First High Resolution Interferometric Observation of a Solar Prominence With ALMA

Abstract: We present the first observation of a solar prominence at $84-116$ GHz using the high resolution interferometric imaging of ALMA. Simultaneous observations in H$\alpha$ from Bia{\l}kaw Observatory and with SDO/AIA reveal similar prominence morphology to the ALMA observation. The contribution functions of 3 mm and H$\alpha$ emission are shown to have significant overlap across a range of gas pressures. We estimate the maximum millimetre-continuum optical thickness to be $\tau_\mathrm{3mm}\approx 2$, and the brightness temperature from the observed H$\alpha$ intensity. The brightness temperature measured by ALMA is $\sim 6000-7000$ K in the prominence spine, which correlates well with the estimated brightness temperature for a gas temperature of 8000 K., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

2. First Spectral Analysis of a Solar Plasma Eruption Using ALMA

Abstract: The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the logarithmic millimeter continuum gradient observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) may be used to estimate optical thickness in the solar atmosphere. We discuss how using multi-wavelength millimeter measurements can refine plasma analysis through knowledge of the absorption mechanisms. Here we use sub-band observations from the publicly available science verification (SV) data, whilst our methodology will also be applicable to regular ALMA data. The spectral resolving capacity of ALMA SV data is tested using the enhancement coincident with an X-ray Bright Point (XBP) and from a plasmoid ejection event near active region NOAA12470 observed in Band 3 (84-116 GHz) on 17/12/2015. We compute the interferometric brightness temperature light-curve for both features at each of the four constituent sub-bands to find the logarithmic millimetre spectrum. We compared the observed logarithmic spectral gradient with the derived relationship with optical thickness for an isothermal plasma to estimate the structure's optical thicknesses. We conclude, within 90% confidence, that the stationary enhancement has an optical thickness between $0.02 \leq \tau \leq 2.78$, and that the moving enhancement has $0.11 \leq \tau \leq 2.78$, thus both lie near to the transition between optically thin and thick plasma at 100 GHz. From these estimates, isothermal plasmas with typical Band 3 background brightness temperatures would be expected to have electron temperatures of $\sim 7370 - 15300$ K for the stationary enhancement and between $\sim 7440 - 9560$ K for the moving enhancement, thus demonstrating the benefit of sub-band ALMA spectral analysis., Comment: To appear in ApJ

3. Spectral Gradient of the Thermal Millimetre Continuum as a Diagnostic for Optical Thickness in the Solar Atmosphere

Abstract: Aims. In this article we aim to show how the gradient of the thermal millimetre continuum spectrum, as emitted from the quiet solar atmosphere, may be used as a diagnostic for the optical thickness regime at the centre of the observing frequency band. Methods. We show the theoretical derivation of the gradient of the millimetre continuum for both logarithmic- and linear-scale spectra. We compare this expression with the empirical relationship between the slope of the millimetre continuum spectrum and the plasma optical thickness computed from both isothermal and multi-thermal two-dimensional cylindrical radiative transfer models. Results. It is found that the logarithmic-scale spectral gradient provides a clear diagnostic for the optical thickness regime for both isothermal and multi-thermal plasmas, provided that a suitable correction is made for a non-constant gaunt factor over the frequency band. For the use of observers we present values for this correction at all ALMA bands and at a wide range of electron temperatures. Conclusions. We find that the spectral gradient can be used to find (a) whether the source is fully optically thin, (b) the optical thickness of the source if it lies within the transitional regime between optically thin and thick plasma ({\tau} $\approx$ $10^{-1} - 10^{1}$), or (c) whether the source is fully optically thick for an isothermal plasma. A multi-thermal plasma will act the same as an isothermal plasma for case (a), however, the transitional regime will only extend from {\tau} $\approx$ $10^{-1} - 10^{0}$ . Above {\tau} = 1 the slope of the continuum will depend increasingly on the temperature gradient, as well as the optical thickness, reducing the reliability of the diagnostic.

4. Solar prominence modelling and plasma diagnostics at ALMA wavelengths

Abstract: Our aim is to test potential solar prominence plasma diagnostics as obtained with the new solar capability of the Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array (ALMA). We investigate the thermal and plasma diagnostic potential of ALMA for solar prominences through the computation of brightness temperatures at ALMA wavelengths. The brightness temperature, for a chosen line of sight, is calculated using densities of hydrogen and helium obtained from a radiative transfer code under non local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) conditions, as well as the input internal parameters of the prominence model in consideration. Two distinct sets of prominence models were used: isothermal-isobaric fine-structure threads, and large-scale structures with radially increasing temperature distributions representing the prominence-to-corona transition region. We compute brightness temperatures over the range of wavelengths in which ALMA is capable of observing (0.32 - 9.6mm), however we particularly focus on the bands available to solar observers in ALMA cycles 4 and 5, namely 2.6 - 3.6mm (Band 3) and 1.1 - 1.4mm (Band 6). We show how the computed brightness temperatures and optical thicknesses in our models vary with the plasma parameters (temperature and pressure) and the wavelength of observation. We then study how ALMA observables such as the ratio of brightness temperatures at two frequencies can be used to estimate the optical thickness and the emission measure for isothermal and non-isothermal prominences. From this study we conclude that, for both sets of models, ALMA presents a strong thermal diagnostic capability, provided that the interpretation of observations is supported by the use of non-LTE simulation results., Comment: Submitted to Solar Physics

6. Radiative transfer in cylindrical threads with incident radiation VII. Multi-thread models

Abstract: We solved the radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium equations in a two-dimensional cross-section of a cylindrical structure oriented horizontally and lying above the solar surface. The cylinder is filled with a mixture of hydrogen and helium and is illuminated at a given altitude from the solar disc. We constructed simple models made from a single thread or from an ensemble of several threads along the line of sight. This first use of two-dimensional, multi-thread fine structure modelling combining hydrogen and helium radiative transfer allowed us to compute synthetic emergent spectra from cylindrical structures and to study the effect of line-of-sight integration of an ensemble of threads under a range of physical conditions. We analysed the effects of variations in temperature distribution and in gas pressure. We considered the effect of multi-thread structures within a given field of view and the effect of peculiar velocities between the structures in a multi-thread model. We compared these new models to the single thread model and tested them with varying parameters. These new computations show, for the first time, the effect of integrating the radiation emitted in H and He lines by several cylindrical threads that are static or moving along the line of sight. They can be used to interpret high-spatial and spectral resolutions of cylindrical structures found in the solar atmosphere, such as cool coronal loops or prominence threads., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: In this paper we present the results of the first low frequency all-sky search of continuous gravitational wave signals conducted on Virgo VSR2 and VSR4 data. The search covered the full sky, a frequency range between 20 Hz and 128 Hz with a range of spin-down between $-1.0 \times 10^{-10}$ Hz/s and $+1.5 \times 10^{-11}$ Hz/s, and was based on a hierarchical approach. The starting point was a set of short Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT), of length 8192 seconds, built from the calibrated strain data. Aggressive data cleaning, both in the time and frequency domains, has been done in order to remove, as much as possible, the effect of disturbances of instrumental origin. On each dataset a number of candidates has been selected, using the FrequencyHough transform in an incoherent step. Only coincident candidates among VSR2 and VSR4 have been examined in order to strongly reduce the false alarm probability, and the most significant candidates have been selected. Selected candidates have been subject to a follow-up by constructing a new set of longer FFTs followed by a further incoherent analysis, still based on the FrequencyHough transform. No evidence for continuous gravitational wave signals was found, therefore we have set a population-based joint VSR2-VSR4 90$\%$ confidence level upper limit on the dimensionless gravitational wave strain in the frequency range between 20 Hz and 128 Hz. This is the first all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves conducted, on data of ground-based interferometric detectors, at frequencies below 50 Hz. We set upper limits in the range between about $10^{-24}$ and $2\times 10^{-23}$ at most frequencies. Our upper limits on signal strain show an improvement of up to a factor of $\sim$2 with respect to the results of previous all-sky searches at frequencies below $80~\mathrm{Hz}$., Comment: 27 pages, 19 figures

Abstract: We report results of a wideband search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars within the Orion spur towards both the inner and outer regions of our Galaxy. As gravitational waves interact very weakly with matter, the search is unimpeded by dust and concentrations of stars. One search disk (A) is $6.87^\circ$ in diameter and centered on $20^\textrm{h}10^\textrm{m}54.71^\textrm{s}+33^\circ33'25.29"$, and the other (B) is $7.45^\circ$ in diameter and centered on $8^\textrm{h}35^\textrm{m}20.61^\textrm{s}-46^\circ49'25.151"$. We explored the frequency range of 50-1500 Hz and frequency derivative from $0$ to $-5\times 10^{-9}$ Hz/s. A multi-stage, loosely coherent search program allowed probing more deeply than before in these two regions, while increasing coherence length with every stage. Rigorous followup parameters have winnowed initial coincidence set to only 70 candidates, to be examined manually. None of those 70 candidates proved to be consistent with an isolated gravitational wave emitter, and 95% confidence level upper limits were placed on continuous-wave strain amplitudes. Near $169$ Hz we achieve our lowest 95% CL upper limit on worst-case linearly polarized strain amplitude $h_0$ of $6.3\times 10^{-25}$, while at the high end of our frequency range we achieve a worst-case upper limit of $3.4\times 10^{-24}$ for all polarizations and sky locations., Comment: Fixed minor typo - duplicate name in the author list

Abstract: Mixing gene pools in translocations can create populations with higher genetic diversity and evolutionary potential compared to single sources. However, the benefits of outcrossing on genetic rescue may depend on species' life history, notably mating systems. We assessed outcomes on growth and survival of different kinds of cross in a translocated population of the highly endangered mixed‐mating species Banksia brownii, established from multiple sources. We genetically assigned plants grown from field‐pollinated seed as of selfed, within‐source or between‐source (referring to the original source populations) cross types, and estimated proportion of heterozygous loci for each plant. We modeled the associations among genetic predictors (cross type, level of genetic diversity, and ancestry) and fitness proxies measured in glasshouse and field. At the translocation site, selfing rates were approximately 53–70% and crossing among sources was rare, both likely owing to different patterns of flowering among plants. Offspring of selfed plants were consistently smaller in volume in the glasshouse than were offspring from within‐source crosses. There was no evidence from the first 3 years that survival in the field was influenced by any predictor tested, but the smaller volume of selfed plants in the glasshouse and correlation of glasshouse size at 5 months with the size of the same plants at 3 years in the field suggest that more time may be needed to observe any effects of outcrossing on survival and fitness. Abstract: In this paper we present the results of the first low frequency all-sky search of continuous gravitational wave signals conducted on Virgo VSR2 and VSR4 data. The search covered the full sky, a frequency range between 20 Hz and 128 Hz with a range of spin-down between $-1.0 \times 10^{-10}$ Hz/s and $+1.5 \times 10^{-11}$ Hz/s, and was based on a hierarchical approach. The starting point was a set of short Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT), of length 8192 seconds, built from the calibrated strain data. Aggressive data cleaning, both in the time and frequency domains, has been done in order to remove, as much as possible, the effect of disturbances of instrumental origin. On each dataset a number of candidates has been selected, using the FrequencyHough transform in an incoherent step. Only coincident candidates among VSR2 and VSR4 have been examined in order to strongly reduce the false alarm probability, and the most significant candidates have been selected. Selected candidates have been subject to a follow-up by constructing a new set of longer FFTs followed by a further incoherent analysis, still based on the FrequencyHough transform. No evidence for continuous gravitational wave signals was found, therefore we have set a population-based joint VSR2-VSR4 90$\%$ confidence level upper limit on the dimensionless gravitational wave strain in the frequency range between 20 Hz and 128 Hz. This is the first all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves conducted, on data of ground-based interferometric detectors, at frequencies below 50 Hz. We set upper limits in the range between about $10^{-24}$ and $2\times 10^{-23}$ at most frequencies. Our upper limits on signal strain show an improvement of up to a factor of $\sim$2 with respect to the results of previous all-sky searches at frequencies below $80~\mathrm{Hz}$., Comment: 27 pages, 19 figures

Abstract: Continuous ground-based observations of ionospheric and magnetospheric regions are critical to the Geospace Environmental Modeling (GEM) program. It is therefore important to establish clear intercalibrations between different ground-based instruments and satellites in order to clearly place the ground-based observations in context with the corresponding in situ satellite measurements. HF-radars operating at high latitudes are capable of observing very large spatial regions of the ionosphere on a nearly continuous basis. In this paper we report on an intercalibration study made using the Polar Anglo-American Conjugate Radar Experiment radars located at Goose Bay, Labrador, and Halley Station, Antarctica, and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites. The DMSP satellite data are used to provide clear identifications of the ionospheric cusp and the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL). The radar data for eight cusp events and eight LLBL events have been examined in order to determine a radar signature of these ionospheric regions. This intercalibraion indicates that the cusp is always characterized by wide, complex Doppler power spectra, whereas the LLBL is usually found to have spectra dominated by a single component. The distribution of spectral widths in the cusp is of a generally Gaussian form with a peak at about 220 m/s. The distribution of spectral widths in the LLBL is more like an exponential distribution, with the peak of the distribution occurring at about 50 m/s. There are a few cases in the LLBL where the Doppler power spectra are strikingly similar to those observed in the cusp.

44. Observations of an enhanced convection channel in the cusp ionosphere

Abstract: The development of an enhanced convection channel within the Southern Hemisphere cusp ionosphere is studied on the basis of the combined PACE radar and DMSP satellite data sets. All data (solar wind and ionosphere) suggest that the event is a signature of enhanced magnetic merging, i.e., the ionospheric signature of a flux transfer event. It is suggested that such a signature arises from several minutes of continuous, enhanced merging rather than short-lived pulses of enhanced merging. The channel propagated westward at about 3 km/s and, when fully formed, its zonal dimension was comparable with the average width of the cusp. It is shown that the formation of polar patches is associated with the occurrence of convection channels.

Abstract: The effects of magnetic storm phases on F-layer irregularities from auroral to equatorial latitudes in a nearly constant western longitude zone are presented by considering scintillation, spread F, and low-energy (less than 12 eV) electron precipitation data for eight magnetic storms that occurred during the high solar flux period September-November 1981. In the equatorial region, F-layer irregularities can be inhibited during the main phase. In the high latitude region, F-layer irregularities are found to be generated at the auroral latitudes during the main phase. During the recovery phase, when there are conditions of low magnetic activity, low auroral irregularities, and low-energy electron precipitation crossing the subauroral regions, strong F-layer irregularities are found to be generated in the subauroral regions.

Abstract: This paper presents two case studies of the large-scale nightside ionospheric plasma convection observed in the two polar regions utilizing HF backscatter radars. The times at which the nightside flow reversal (the Harang discontinuity) occurs is seen to differ by several hours between the two study periods and between the two hemispheres. Flow reversal appeared simply to be shifted to later magnetic times in the Southern Hemisphere, while the evening westward flow was disrupted by the occurrence of eastward flow ahead of the Harang discontinuity in the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract: The high temporal and spatial resolution of the Polar Anglo-American Conjugate Experiment radar data have permitted the evolution and formation of a transient plasma velocity signature in the cusp ionosphere to be studied. The signature satisfies a number of the predictions of theoretical models that require the formation of vortices. A much weaker enhancement in velocities is shown in the Northern Hemisphere, which is consistent with the vector superposition arguments presented by Crooker (1979) for the antiparallel merging model.

48. A Classification and Comparison of Multiple Comparisons.

Abstract: A fairly large number of different methods exist for evaluating comparisons or null hypothetical contrasts. Because it is difficult to choose among them, this paper develops a 2 by 2 classification of the methods. The first dimension of the classification is decision-based error rate vs. experimentwise error rate. The second dimension is planned vs. post-hoc contrast. Most of the generally useful and better-known methods are considered; t, Bonferroni, Dunnett, Duncan Multiple Range, Rodger, Scheffe, Tukey, and Newman-Keuls Multiple Range. Each method is classified and discussed. If one has very specific questions to be answered, and a very good idea of what the true population means are, use carefully planned tests; otherwise use post-hoc methods.
