4. Mapping misorientation and crystallographic tilt in GaN layers via polychromatic microdiffraction

Abstract

The spatial distribution of strain, dislocations, and crystallographic orientation in uncoalesced and coalesced GaN layers grown on striped Si or SiC substrates was studied by polychromatic X-ray microdiffraction and high resolution monochromatic X-ray diffraction. Tilt boundaries formed at the column/wing interface depending on the growth conditions and geometry of the striped substrate. The measurements revealed that the free-hanging wings are tilted upward at room temperature. A misorientation between the GaN(0001) and the Si(111) or SiC(0001) surface normal is observed. Distinct structural properties of the pendeo and cantilever epitaxially grown samples are discussed.

20. Global Peginterferon Beta-1a Tolerability Management Best Practices: A Nurse-Focused Delphi Approach.

Abstract

Introduction: Injection site reactions (ISRs) and flu-like symptoms (FLS) are common in patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) treated with peginterferon beta-1a. The purpose of this Delphi analysis was to explore peginterferon beta-1a discontinuation rates across MS treatment centers, to obtain consensus on effective mitigation and management strategies for ISRs and FLS, and to identify areas where additional training and education for nurses and patients could improve treatment outcomes. Method(s): In this modified Delphi process, an international steering committee of eight MS-certified nurses developed two rounds of surveys, which were completed by 262 and 188 MS nurses, respectively, representing nine countries. Result(s): On average, nurses reported that 25% and 30% of patients treated with peginterferon beta-1a experienced ISRs and FLS, respectively. Discontinuation due to severe ISRs or FLS was most common in the first 6 months of treatment, yet follow-up visits typically took place 6 months after peginterferon beta-1a initiation. Preferred management strategies for ISRs included nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and rotation of the injection site, whereas preferred management strategies for FLS included acetaminophen/paracetamol and hydration/nutrition. Most nurses (77%) agreed that additional education and training on ISR and FLS management would bolster their confidence in treating patients with these symptoms. Conclusion(s): Delphi respondents reached consensus on ISR and FLS management strategies, which can help to inform treatment decisions. The results of this global Delphi analysis indicate that management of ISRs and FLS could be improved with more frequent follow-up visits and individualized training and education.Copyright © 2021, The Author(s).

32. In Vitro Investigation of Auranofin as a Treatment for Clostridium difficile Infection

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile infection is the leading cause of hospital-acquired gastrointestinal infection and incidence rates continue to rise. Clostridium difficile infection is becoming increasingly complex to treat owing to the rise in treatment failures and recurrent infections. There is a clear need for new therapeutic options for the management of this disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess auranofin, a drug approved for the treatment of arthritis, as a treatment for C. difficile infection. Previous investigations have demonstrated potential antimicrobial activity of auranofin against C. difficile and other organisms. METHODS: The activity of auranofin was assessed by in vitro investigations of its effect on C. difficile M7404 growth, vegetative cell viability, and spore viability. Activity of auranofin was also compared to that of the current treatments, metronidazole and vancomycin. RESULTS: Auranofin showed bactericidal activity at concentrations as low as 4.07 µg/mL, effectively reducing bacterial cell density by 50-70% and the viable vegetative cell and spore yields by 100%. The activity of auranofin was shown to be non-inferior to that of metronidazole and vancomycin. CONCLUSIONS: Auranofin is highly efficacious against C. difficile M7404 in vitro and has the potential to be an ideal therapeutic option for the treatment of C. difficile infection.
