Aim: This article presents an innovative methodological approach – the combination of grounded theory and professional biographical research – with the potential to create a typology of midwives and to reconstruct individual out-of-hospital career pathways. These initial results of an ongoing PhD study of midwives' career-related decision making processes regarding leaving or continuing to provide out-of-hospital obstetric care in Germany will serve as an example to demonstrate the value and relevance of the proposed combination – for the young discipline of midwifery science and regarding as yet unexplored aspects of professionalism in midwifery. Methodological relevance of the project: The profession ‘midwife’ is an under-researched topic in Germany, even more so within the qualitative paradigm. The increasing number of midwives leaving the profession, and in particular out-of-hospital-obstetric care, has resulted in a shortage of midwifery services. So far, however, there is hardly any empirical information available in Germany as to why midwives enter, remain in or leave this field. Gaining insights into factors influencing midwives’ decisions in this regard is as relevant to health science as it is to health policy. New methodological approaches are required to untangle the complexity of midwives’ professional development. Die Hohlwellenprüfeinrichtung ist für die mechanisierte Ultraschallprüfung an eingebauten Radsätzen ausgelegt. Ziel der Prüfung ist das Auffi nden von Querrissen in der Radsatzwelle. Als besonders anrissgefährdete Bereiche gelten die Querschnittsübergänge, insbesondere die Übergänge vom Radsatz zum Schaft der Welle. Für Wellen mit 30 mm Bohrungsdurchmesser ist die Prüfung in Axialrichtung mit einem Einschallwinkel von 45° voraus- und zurückschallend vorgegeben. Für die größeren Bohrungsdurchmesser erfolgt die Prüfung in Axialrichtung mit Einschallwinkeln von 0°, 45° und 70° voraus- und zurückschallend. Der Prüfstand basiert auf Forderungen der Deutschen Bahn AG. Die Anlage entstand im Auftrag der Staatlichen Chinesische Eisenbahn. Bis August 2007 wurden sechs Systeme ausgeliefert. Previous standards for the manufacturing inspection of railroad wheels using ultrasound, such as UIC 812, have been replaced by new standards, for example EN 13262 and RD32.144-2000, both requiring ultrasonic testing in immersion technique. These new standards require the development of an ultrasonic technique for 100% coverage of the wheel rim and wheel hub, and in special cases for both straight and curved wheel disks. In order to encompass a large variety of railroad wheel designs, inspection and handling techniques should be capable of dealing with wheel diameters ranging from 600 mm to 1300 mm (23" to 51") at testing cycles from 1 to 4 minutes per wheel. The current requirement for the minimum detectable flaw size is DSR 1 mm (disc shape reflector, DSR, 1 mm diameter) for high-speed train wheels rims and DSR 2mm for all other wheel rims. The minimum detectable flaw size for all other wheel areas (hub and disk areas) is DSR 3 mm. To meet all these criteria, the Rail Wheel Inspection (RWI) System was developed by IZFP and their partners. The system consists of an ultrasonic testing sub-system, immersion tank and transportation/handling sub-systems. Test cycles of 1 minute per wheel require two immersion tanks and two transportation/handling subsystems. The ultrasonic sub-system features modular computer-aided 6 to 16- channel UT electronics (PCUS 11) to employ 6 to 16 ultrasonic transducers (the precise number is determined by the testing procedure). Eisenbahnräder sind im Güter- und Personenverkehr hohen dynamischen Belastungen ausgesetzt. Der Hochgeschwindigkeitsverkehr von Eisenbahnen sowie der Transport von kostenintensiven und gefährlichen Gütern erfordern eine hochwertige Qualität von Eisenbahnrädern als wichtige Voraussetzung für den sicheren, störungsfreien Fahrbetrieb. Hochbelastete Räder müssen den Anforderungen der europäischen Norm EN 13262 entsprechen. Sie werden mittels Ultraschall geprüft.

The underfloor testing system UFPE is used to inspect mounted ICE-wheels on a stationary train all 240.000km. After approximately 500.000 km of usage, wheel sets of the InterCityExpress (ICE) are inspected after dismounting and refurbishment by the automatic ultrasonic inspection system AURA. Single wheels are inspected during the proscess of production by the automated ultrasonic rail wheel inspection system RWI.

Non-destructive testing of piping in operation is an urgent task, requiring development of new methods of control, oriented to the current condition of the plants. Control of welded joints in this respect is an area, which is relatively well-developed and specified in detail. As regards control of the pipe y, i.e. sections between welds, ability to control them is limited, in view of their large extent and presence of various anticorrosion and insulation coatings.

Radsätze von Hochgeschwindigkeitszügen (ICE u.a.) sind während ihrer Lebensdauer einer hohen dynamischen Belastung ausgesetzt. Derzeit werden die Radsätze von ICE-Zügen etwa alle 250 000 km einer zerstörungsfreien Prüfung im Bereich des Radkranzes und der Radscheibe unterzogen. Für eine neue Generation von europäischen Hochgeschwindigkeitszügen wird das zerstörungsfreie Prüfsystem »SUPRA« vorgestellt, mit dem sich Räder bei einer Überrollgeschwindigkeit von ca. 5 km/h prüfen lassen. Ein kostenintensiver Stillstand des Zuges während der zerstörungsfreien Werkstoffprüfung der Räder entfällt.

Die Sicherheit im Bahnbetrieb ist die wichtigste Forderung an jedes Bahnunternehmen. Zum sicheren Bahnbetrieb gehört auch die regelmäßige Kontrolle der Radsätze auf Fehler, insbesondere bei Hochgeschwindigkeitsfahrzeugen. Zur Überprüfung der ICE-Radsätze wurde eine neue Unterflurprüfeinrichtung entwickelt.

Drawings of objects were presented in series of 54 each to 14 German speaking subjects with the tasks to indicate by button presses a) whether the grammatical gender of an object name was masculine ("der") or feminine ("die") and b) whether the depicted object was man-made or nature-made. The magnetoencephalogram (MEG) was recorded with a whole-head neuromagnetometer and task-specific patterns of brain activity were determined in the source space (Minimum Norm Estimates, MNE). A left-temporal focus of activity 150-275 ms after stimulus onset in the gender decision compared to the semantic classification task was discussed as indicating the retrieval of syntactic information, while a more expanded left hemispheric activity in the gender relative to the semantic task 300-625 ms after stimulus onset was discussed as indicating phonological encoding. A predominance of activity in the semantic task was observed over right fronto-central region 150-225 ms after stimulus-onset, suggesting that semantic and syntactic processes are prominent in this stage of lexical selection.

Der hohen Verkehrsdichte in Deutschland entspricht die Politik und die Deutsche Bahn mit gezielten Maßnahmen zur Steigerung der Wirtschaftlichkeit, Verfügbarkeit und Sicherheit des Schienenverkehrs unter anderem für die zerstörungsfreie Werkstoffprüfung (zfP) an Rädern, Radsatzwellen und Schienen. Die Prüf- und Messtechnik beeinflusst den gesamten Lebensdauerzyklus von Bahnkomponenten, beginnend bei der Auslegung, Konstruktion, Fertigung über die Lebensdauer hin zur Wartung. Das Qualitätsmanagement auf der Basis von Datenbanken hilft bei der Überwachung sicherheitstechnisch relevanter Komponenten, wie den Radsätzen im Lebensdauerzeitraum.

Continuous improvements for track-bound vehicles, particularly high-speed trains such as the ICE or the TGV, require permanent development of the safety technology which in future must meet the quality standards expected from airlines. These new requirement present also a challenge for non-destructive testing. This paper introduces the recent development of system for ultrasonic inspection of wheel-sets. The fully automated testing station, named AURA, performs inspections of the rim and disk of wheel-sets after refurbishing at the maintenance facilities. Not only is the performance standard of AURA demonstrated, but also attention is drawn to the experience gained during operation of the tree AURA testing stations.

Zerstörungsfreie Verfahren zur Ermittlung von Werkstoffzuständen sind ein unverzichtbares Werkzeug zur Qualitätssicherung von Bauteilen. Für die Prüfung von Rohrinnenseiten in Heizkraftwerken auf Rißfreiheit wurde ein spezielles Molchsystem entwickelt und in der Praxis eingesetzt.

A multi-channel recording was used to comprehensively examine the topography of the PINV and topographical differences between CNV and PINV in schizophrenic patients and healthy controls. Scalp amplitude and scalp laplacian (CSD) maps of the terminal CNV (tCNV) and PINV, and the time course of the PINV over four post-imperative intervals (1.0-3.0 s after the imperative stimulus) were compared. CNV and PINV were induced in a modified visual delayed matching-te-sample task, in which the pattern of the imperative stimulus could either be clearly matched to one of two diamonds simultaneously presented as warning stimuli (140 trials), or was ambiguous (65 trials) with respect to the warning stimuli presented 4 s earlier. Using a 32-channel electrode montage, the EEG was recorded from 12 schizophrenic patients and 11 controls. Statistical analyses on a subset of 18 electrodes confirmed topographical differences of CSD-maps between tCNV and PINV. Negativity increased from tCNV to PINV and was larger on ambiguous than clear trials. Controls exhibited a pronounced hemispheric asymmetry with larger PINV over the right, particularly over lateral fronto-temporal sites, whereas asymmetry was small with a tendency for larger left frontal PINV in patients. The topographical differences between tCNV and PINV suggest functional differences between the two components.

In a series of studies we examined sensory evoked potentials to stimuli presented while subjects performed a primary task. The primary tasks were designed to induce changes in slow cortical potentials (SCP) such as P300, contingent negative variation (CNV), and postimperative negative variation (PINV). Brief auditory stimuli were presented before, during or after the primary task. The interactions between the two types of event-related potentials, SCP and the probe-evoked N 1/P2, served to further explore the nature of SCP, particularly in its relation to excitability in cortical neuronal networks. The functional state indicated by SCP was also probed in patients with a chronic schizophrenic disorder, who are known to exhibit deviant SCP. Increased amplitudes of the probe-evoked vertex potential (N 1/P2) and faster motor responses to probes during the CNV, and reduced N 1/P2-omplitudes and delayed motor responses during positive waves (P300) support the hypothesis that anticipatory cortical negativity indicates excitation in cortical neuronal networks while positive-going waves may indicate widespread cortical suppression (with focused islands of cortical excitability). Increased amplitudes of the N 1/P2 during the CNV but not during the PINV suggest a different functional significance of these two negative-going slow waves. Although schizophrenic patients displayed different amplitudes and scalp distribution, particularly of the PINV, suggesting a deviant spatia-temporal regulation of cortical excitability, the functional relation between SCP and probe-related activity was similar in schizophrenic patients and control subjects.
