13. The antimicrobial capacity of Cistus salviifolius and Punica granatum plant extracts against clinical pathogens is related to their polyphenolic composition

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to human health worldwide. Plant compounds may help to overcome antibiotic resistance due to their potential resistance modifying capacity. Several botanical extracts and pure polyphenolic compounds were screened against a panel of eleven bacterial isolates with clinical relevance. The two best performing agents, Cistus salviifolius (CS) and Punica granatum (GP) extracts, were tested against 100 Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates, which resulted in average MIC50 values ranging between 50-80 mu g/mL. CS extract, containing hydrolyzable tannins and flavonoids such as myricetin and quercetin derivatives, demonstrated higher activity against methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates. GP extract, which contained mostly hydrolyzable tannins, such as punicalin and punicalagin, was more effective against methicillin-sensitive S. aureus isolates. Generalized linear model regression and multiple correspondence statistical analysis revealed a correlation between a higher susceptibility to CS extract with bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and quinolones. On the contrary, susceptibility to GP extract was related with bacteria sensitive to quinolones and oxacillin. Bacterial susceptibility to GP and CS extracts was linked to a resistance profile based on cell wall disruption mechanism. In conclusion, a differential antibacterial activity against S. aureus isolates was observed depending on antibiotic resistance profile of isolates and extract polyphenolic composition, which may lead to development of combinatorial therapies including antibiotics and botanical extracts.

Abstract

National audience; Introducing legumes in modern cropping systems increases crop diversity and reduces the use of external inputs. It thus contributes to achieving sustainable food and feed production. Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is an environmentally friendly, nutritious, protein-rich legume food crop. It is grown in a wide range of climatic conditions and fixes atmospheric nitrogen through bacterial symbiosis. In France, lentil cultivated areas are continuously increasing but are still largely inferior to the areas cultivated with cereals or other legumes such as pea and faba bean. One of the most serious problems for lentil cultivation is due to the insect pests known as seed beetles (Coleoptera, Bruchinae). Their larvae feed on developing seeds provoking severe yield losses. Lentil is also susceptible to root rot. Various fungal and fungus-like organisms including Aphanomyces and Pythium make up a disease complex and provoke poor root development and stunting/yellowing of aerial parts. The French research project called RésiLens (2019-2021), funded by the special allocation account for agriculture and rural development (CasDAR), aims at addressing these urgent questions. Seven public and private partners will be working together to characterize the diversity of a lentil collection comprising 300 accessions at the phenotypic and molecular levels. Phenotyping trials under different environments will allow generating knowledge about lentil response to main stresses and identifying resistant genitors for breeding.

27. Is it possible to predict the presence of colorectal cancer in a blood test? A probabilistic approach method

Abstract

Introduction: The assessment of the state of immunosurveillance (the ability of the organism to prevent the development of neoplasias) in the blood has prognostic implications of interest in colorectal cancer. We evaluated and quantified a possible predictive character of the disease in a blood test using a mathematical interaction index of several blood parameters. The predictive capacity of the index to detect colorectal cancer was also assessed. Methods: We performed a retrospective case-control study of a comparative analysis of the distribution of blood parameters in 266 patients with colorectal cancer and 266 healthy patients during the period from 2009 to 2013. Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed between patients with colorectal cancer and the control group in terms of platelet counts, fibrinogen, total leukocytes, neutrophils, systemic immunovigilance indexes (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio), hemoglobin, hematocrit and eosinophil levels. These differences allowed the design of a blood analytical profile that calculates the risk of colorectal cancer. This risk profile can be quantified via a mathematical formula with a probabilistic capacity to identify patients with the highest risk of the presence of colorectal cancer (area under the ROC curve = 0.85). Conclusions: We showed that a colorectal cancer predictive character exists in blood which can be quantified by an interaction index of several blood parameters. The design and development of interaction indexes of blood parameters constitutes an interesting research line for the development and improvement of programs for the screening of colorectal cancer.

Abstract

International audience; The haematological side effects of antitubercular drugs are not well known. We report the observation of a patient who received Rifater for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. After one month of treatment, he developed an acute pulmonary infection, with neutropenia (1218/microl) and thrombocytopenia (109,000/microl), requiring suspension of his antitubercular drugs. After the reintroduction of he again developed thrombocytopenia (6,000/microl) associated with bleeding and required treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin. The introduction of a combination of moxifloxacin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol was followed by a new relapse of the thrombocytopenia. Responsibility of pyrazinamide was then suspected and later confirmed by the evolution of platelet levels after stopping and reintroducing this antibiotic. This is the third reported case of pyrazinamide induced thrombocytopenia, whose frequency is probably underestimated because of the use of compound treatment.

38. Conformación, engrasamiento y sistemas de clasificación de la canal caprina

Abstract

España es el segundo país productor de ganado caprino de In UE, con un 21 % del censo total, tras Grecia que posee el 48,7% (Delfa, 2004). A pesar de ello no existe en nuestro país ningún distintivo o Marca de Calidad para la canal y carne caprina, mientras que en Portugal, con un censo del 27,8% del español y una producción de carne que tan solo supone el 13,9% de la española, tiene cinco Indicaciones Geográficas Protegidas. Existe por lo tanto un gran desconocimiento sobre las razas caprinas autóctonas españolas, que se acrecienta con las de aptitud cárnica. A este respecto, Devendra (2000) y Lebbie (2000) indicaban la existencia de importantes lagunas en el conocimiento de esta especie, reconociendo recientementc Morand-Fehr y Lebbie (2004) la necesidad de analizar su situación actual con el fin de prepararla para los retos de un próximo futuro.

Existen diferentes definiciones según autores, así para Sañudo y Sierra (1986), es el arte complejo que trata de adecuar unos máximos beneficios a unos gustos del mercado, dividiendo la canal en diferentes trozos a los que se les adscribe distintas categorías.
