Recent decades have seen a massive expansion in higher education (HE), fuelled by high expectations about its private benefits. This has raised concerns about the impact on the employability of recent graduates and the potential mismatches between their skills and the competences required by the job structure. Equally, it could set the ground for a possible transformation of demand for graduate skills and the emergence of new employment profiles. In this article, data for Portugal for the period 2000-2010 were used to look at compositional changes in graduate employment and the incidence of three potential problems in graduates' transition to the labour market: overeducation, overskilling and education--job mismatches. The implications of growing demand heterogeneity on increasing inequality in graduate labour markets and on the expectations supporting mass HE in a country that rapidly expanded access to tertiary education as a strategy to converge with the productivity levels of other more developed economies are discussed.

Multiple imperatives call for more diversity in organizations, yet we know surprisingly little about why some organizations become more diverse than others. We focus on the early stages of organizations—the composition of founding teams (FTs) and the evolution of subsequent hiring practices, namely the prominence of finding new employees via founders' prior employer and educational affiliations. Drawing upon theories of entrepreneurial resource mobilization and attraction–selection–attrition (ASA), we argue that FTs with common professional ties imprint post‐founding hiring routines by making affiliation‐based hiring (ABH) a more prominent practice to select new personnel. We posit that, although ABH fades quickly after founding, using this hiring strategy in the early stages of an organization shapes its trajectory for diversity and contributes to workforce homogenization in several dimensions as new firms mature. Using a mixed‐methods approach combining large‐scale employer–employee linked data from Denmark and in‐depth surveys with founders from the US and UK, we find robust support for our theory and provide novel insights to the hiring processes in entrepreneurial firms. Our work advances our understanding of the enigmatic origins of within‐organization homogeneity progression and offers important contributions to both theory and practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This text is a summary of a special issue of the journal Industry and Innovation, which focuses on Grand Innovation Challenges (GICs). The special issue includes four articles that explore different aspects of innovation in relation to these challenges. The articles cover topics such as the resilience of innovation systems, the challenges posed by online labor platforms, the coordination challenges faced by ecosystem orchestrators in the metaverse, and the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in open social innovation. The authors of the special issue call for research that addresses GICs from various perspectives and suggest several areas for future research. Overall, the special issue aims to shape the research agenda for innovation studies and invites scholars to contribute to the ongoing debates. [Extracted from the article]

The expansion of higher education systems has often been associated with the need for increasing diversification, namely at the program level, based on the pressures to adapt more general programmes to a more diverse student population and multiple regional, social, and economic needs. This paper explores empirically the question of programme diversity by drawing on the Portuguese higher education' experience, which presented massive expansion during the last decades and significant institutional competition in recent years. The study provides a longitudinal approach and analyzes in detail the evolution of diversification and specialization of the public and private sectors, as well as the university and polytechnic subsectors. The analysis aims at helping to illustrate the relevance of analysing diversity from an empirical point of view and its contribution to our understanding of the complex relationships between competition and diversity in contemporary higher education.
