The rheological and morphological properties of blends based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and a commercial ethylene–octene copolymer (EOC) produced by metallocene technology were investigated. The rheological properties were evaluated in steady and dynamic shear experiments at 190°C in shear rates ranging from 90 s⁻¹ to 1500 s⁻¹ and frequency range between 10⁻¹ rad/s and 10² rad/s, respectively. These blends presented a high level of homogeneity in the molten state and rheological behavior was generally intermediate to those of the pure components. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the blends exhibit dispersed morphologies with EOC domains distributed homogeneously and with particle size inferior to 2 μm. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work presents the vapor–liquid equilibrium calculations in an isothermal flash, applied to polymer solutions, using the Peng–Robinson cubic equation of state modified by Stryjek–Vera, and the mixing rule introduced by Wong–Sandler. This rule allows combining the rigid lattice thermodynamic model of Flory–Huggins to the Peng–Robinson–Stryjek–Vera equation of state. As the Gibbs free energy must be minimum in the equilibrium state, a stochastic optimization method, the simulated annealing algorithm, was used to find out the extreme of this thermodynamic potential.

Thermal and morphological studies have been performed on polymer blends based on ethylene–octene copolymer (PEE)/PP and ethylene–propylene–diene copolymer (EPDM)/PP. The thermal and morphological behavior of PEE, EPDM, PEE/PP, and EPDM/PP systems were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing light microscopy, respectively. It was observed that the behaviors of crystallization kinetics of PEE/PP and EPDM/PP blends were similar. It was also observed that addition up to 10–20% (w/w) of elastomers resulted in increasing of spherulite size. The heat of fusion (ΔHf) and crystallinity degree of PEE/PP and EPDM/PP systems decreased when the elastomer contents were increased. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of blends of high density polyethylene and poly(ethylene-co-1-octene) (PEO) were evaluated. The blends were prepared in a single screw extruder at 230°C and 50 rpm with volume fraction of elastomer varying in the range from 0.05 to 0.8. Factors such as chemical similarity and melt viscosity favor the interdiffusion process of phases, resulting in better interfacial adhesion. A synergistic effect on the strength at break and elongation at break for a particular range of blend composition was observed. Blends with a volume fraction of PEO higher than 5% presented a super tough behavior at room temperature. Dynamic viscoelastic properties of binary blends consisting of an isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) and ethylene-1-octene copolymer (PEE) were investigated to reveal the relation between miscibility in the molten state and the morphology in the solid state. In this study, PEE with 24 wt % of 1-octene was employed. The PEE/PP blend with high PEE contents showed two separate glass-relaxation processes associated with those of the pure components. These findings indicate that the blend presents a two-phase morphology in the solid state as well as in the molten state. The PEE/PP blend with low PEE content showed a single glass-relaxation process, indicating that PEE molecules were probably incorporated in the amorphous region of i-PP in the solid state. The DMTA analysis showed that the blends with low PEE contents presented only one dispersion peak, indicating a certain degree of miscibility between the components of these blends. Rheological and morphological studies were performed on polymer blends of ethylene-octene copolymer [polyethylene elastomer (PEE)] and polypropylene (PP). The viscosities of PEE, PP, and PEE/PP blends were analyzed using an Instron capillary rheometer and a Rheometrics Dynamic Stress Rheometer, SR 200. A non-Newtonian flow behavior was observed in all samples in the shear rate range from 27 to 2700 s⁻¹, whereas at shear rates in the range from 0.01 to 0.04 s⁻¹, a Newtonian flow behavior was verified. The scanning electron micrographs showed that dual-phase continuity may occur between 50 and 60 (wt %) of PEE. This result is consistent with the Sperling's model. The mechanical analysis showed that PEE/PP, with 5 wt % of PEE, presented an increase on the mechanical properties and as the PEE content increased, a negative deviation in relation to an empirical equation was observed. Thermal analysis showed that there were no change in the crystallization behavior of the matrix when different elastomer contents were added. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that samples with low PEE contents presented only one peak, indicating a certain degree of miscibility between the components of these blends. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new family of homogeneous polyolefin polymers that exhibit unique molecular and rheological properties designated polyolefin elastomers (POEs) are characterized by a narrow molecular weight and high degrees of comonomer distribution. Because these copolymers are often elastomeric in nature, one of the uses for these materials is as impact properties improver for brittle polymers such as polypropylene at low temperatures. In this work a study was carried out about the effectiveness of the polyethylene elastomer (POE) as an impact modifier for polypropylene in relation to the traditional modifier EPDM. In this study the flow properties of of the POE/PP and EPDM/PP blends were also evaluated. The blends were analyzed by solid-state ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (¹³C-NMR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that PEE/PP and EPDM/PP blends present a similar crystalline behavior, which resulted in a similar mechanical performance of the blends, on the composition analyzed. It was also verified that the POE/PP blend presents lower torque values than the EPDM/PP blend, which indicates a better processability when POE is used as an impact modifier. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
