The electric dipole strength distribution in $^{58}$Ni between 6 and 20 MeV has been determined from proton inelastic scattering experiments at very forward angles at RCNP, Osaka. The experimental data are rather well reproduced by quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations including vibration coupling, despite a mild dependence on the adopted Skyrme interaction. They allow an estimate of the experimentally inaccessible high-energy contribution above 20 MeV, leading to an electric dipole polarizability $\alpha_\mathrm{D}(^{58}{\rm Ni}) = 3.48(31)$ fm$^3$. This serves as a test case for recent extensions of coupled-cluster calculations with chiral effective field theory interactions to nuclei with two nucleons on top of a closed-shell system., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Dispersion corrections to elastic electron scattering from $^{208}$Pb at energies up to 150 MeV are estimated within the second-order Born approximation. All strong transient nuclear excited states with angular momentum up to $L=3$ and natural parity are taken into consideration. It is found that at small scattering angles the high-lying $L=1$ isovector states provide the dominant contribution to the dispersive change of the differential cross section and of the beam-normal spin asymmetry. At the backmost angles these changes are considerably smaller and are basically due to the isoscalar $L=2$ and, to a lesser extent, $L=3$ states. In comparison with the findings for $^{12}$C, the dispersive cross-section modifications for $^{208}$Pb are significantly larger, while the spin-asymmetry changes are much smaller at all angles. The latter originates from the destructive interference of the multipole contributions in $^{208}$Pb that switch sign when proceeding from $L$ to $L+1$. This mechanism might be the origin of the small beam-normal spin asymmetries recently measured in ${}^{208}$Pb at much larger energies., Comment: Sent for publication

The structure of a vortex in the inner crust of a pulsar is calculated microscopically in the Wigner-Seitz cell approximation, simulating the conditions of the inner crust of a cold, non-accreting neutron star, in which a lattice of nuclei coexists with a sea of superfluid neutrons. The calculation is based on the axially deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov framework, using effective interactions. The present work extends and improves previous studies in four ways: i) it allows for the axial deformation of protons induced by the large deformation of neutrons due to the appearance of vortices; ii) it includes the effect of Coulomb exchange; iii) considers the possible effects of the screening of the pairing interaction; and iv) it improves the numerical treatment. We also demonstrate that the binding energy of the nucleus-vortex system can be used as a proxy to the pinning energy of a vortex and discuss in which conditions this applies. From our results, we can estimate the mesoscopic pinning forces per unit length acting on vortices. We obtain values ranging between $10^{14}$ to $10^{16}$ dyn/cm, consistent with previous findings., Comment: Paper submitted for publication

The electric dipole strength distribution in $^{40}$Ca between 5 and 25 MeV has been determined at RCNP, Osaka, from proton inelastic scattering experiments at very forward angles. Combined with total photoabsorption data at higher excitation energy, this enables an extraction of the electric dipole polarizability $\alpha_\mathrm{D}$($^{40}$Ca) = 1.92(17) fm$^3$. Together with the measured $\alpha_{\rm D}$ in $^{48}$Ca, it provides a stringent test of modern theoretical approaches, including coupled cluster calculations with chiral effective field theory interactions and state-of-the art energy density functionals. The emerging picture is that for this medium-mass region dipole polarizabilities are well described theoretically, with important constraints for the neutron skin in $^{48}$Ca and related equation of state quantities., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

A complete solution to the inverse problem of Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory is proposed. Our method consists of two steps. First, the effective KS potential is determined from the ground state density of a given system. Then, the knowledge of the potentials along a path in the space of densities is exploited in a line integration formula to determine numerically the KS energy of that system. A possible choice for the density path is proposed. A benchmark in the case of a simplified yet realistic nuclear system is shown to be successful, so that the method seems promising for future applications.

We discuss the construction of a nuclear Energy Density Functional (EDF) from ab initio calculations, and we advocate the need of a methodical approach that is free from ad hoc assumptions. The equations of state (EoS) of symmetric nuclear and pure neutron matter are computed using the chiral NNLO$_{\rm sat}$ and the phenomenological AV4$^\prime$+UIX$_{c}$ Hamiltonians as inputs in the Self-consistent Green's Function (SCGF) and Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) methods, respectively. We propose a convenient parametrization of the EoS as a function of the Fermi momentum and fit it on the SCGF and AFDMC calculations. We apply the ab initio-based EDF to carry out an analysis of the binding energies and charge radii of different nuclei in the local density approximation. The NNLO$_{\rm sat}$-based EDF produces encouraging results, whereas the AV4$^\prime$+UIX$_{c}$-based one is farther from experiment. Possible explanations of these different behaviors are suggested, and the importance of gradient and spin-orbit terms is analyzed. Our work paves the way for a practical and systematic way to merge ab initio nuclear theory and DFT, while at the same time it sheds light on some of the critical aspects of this procedure., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

A formula to evaluate the effects of a general deformation on the Coulomb direct contribution to the energy of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) is presented and studied via a simple yet physical model. The toy model gives a reasonable account of microscopic deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) calculations in a test case, and provides a guidance when predicting unknown IAS energies. Thus, deformed HFB calculations, to predict the IAS energies, are performed for several neutron-deficient medium-mass and heavy nuclei which are now planned to be studied experimentally.

The Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model was devised to test the validity of different approximate formalisms to treat many-particle systems. The model was constructed to be exactly solvable and yet non-trivial, in order to capture some of the main features of real physical systems. In the present contribution, we explicitly review the fact that different many-body approximations commonly used in different fields in physics clearly fail to describe the exact LMG solution. With similar assumptions as those adopted for the LMG model, we propose a new Hamiltonian based on a general two-body interaction. The new model (Extended LMG) is not only more general than the original LMG model and, therefore, with a potentially larger spectrum of applicability, but also the physics behind its exact solution can be much better captured by common many-body approximations. At the basis of this improvement lies a new term in the Hamiltonian that depends on the number of constituents and polarizes the system; the associated symmetry breaking is discussed, together with some implications for the study of more realistic systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in JPhysG (Letter)

The dipole polarizability of stable even-mass tin isotopes 112,114,116,118,120,124 was extracted from inelastic proton scattering experiments at 295 MeV under very forward angles performed at RCNP. Predictions from energy density functionals cannot account for the present data and the polarizability of 208Pb simultaneously. The evolution of the polarizabilities in neighboring isotopes indicates a kink at 120Sn while all model results show a nearly linear increase with mass number after inclusion of pairing corrections., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Nuclear Density Functional Theory (DFT) plays a prominent role in the understanding of nuclear structure, being the approach with the widest range of applications. Hohenberg and Kohn theorems warrant the existence of a nuclear Energy Density Functional (EDF), yet its form is unknown. Current efforts to build a nuclear EDF are hindered by the lack of a strategy for systematic improvement. In this context, alternative approaches should be pursued and, so far, an unexplored avenue is that related to the inverse DFT problem. DFT is based on the one-to-one correspondence between Kohn-Sham (KS) potentials and densities. The exact EDF produces the exact density, so that from the knowledge of experimental or {\it ab initio} densities one may deduce useful information through reverse engineering. The idea has already been proven to be useful in the case of electronic systems. The general problem should be dealt with in steps, and the objective of the present work is to focus on testing algorithms to extract the Kohn-Sham potential within the simplest ansatz from the knowledge of the experimental neutron and proton densities. We conclude that while robust algorithms exist, the experimental densities present some critical aspects. Finally, we provide some perspectives for future works.

One of the few exact results for the description of the time-evolution of an inhomogeneous, interacting many-particle system is given by the Harmonic Potential Theorem (HPT). The relevance of this theorem is that it sets a tight constraint on time-dependent many-body approximations. In this contribution, we show that the original formulation of the HPT is valid also for the case of spin-, velocity- and density-dependent interactions. This result is completely general and relevant, among the rest, for nuclear structure theory both in the case of ab initio and of more phenomenological approaches. As an example, we report on a numerical implementation by testing the small-amplitude limit of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock -- also known as Random Phase Approximation (RPA) -- for the translational frequencies of a neutron system trapped in a harmonic potential., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. We study double charge-exchange phonon states in neutron-rich nuclei, in particular the double isobaric analog states and the double Gamow-Teller excitations, induced by the double isospin operator $\sum_{i,j=1}^At_-(i) t_-(j)$ and spin-isospin operator $\sum_{i,j=1}^A{\sigma}(i) t_-(i){\sigma}(j) t_-(j)$, respectively. We employ quartic commutator relations to evaluate the average energies $E_{\rm DIAS} - 2E_{\rm IAS}$ and $E_{\rm DGTR}-E_{\rm DIAS} - 2(E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS})$, and conventional double commutator relations to evaluate the average energies of $E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS}$ and $E_{\rm IAS}$. We have found that the corrections due to quartic commutators follow the approximate laws: $E_{\rm DIAS} - 2E_{\rm IAS}\approx \frac{3}{2} A^{-1/3}$ MeV and $E_{\rm DGTR}-E_{\rm DIAS} - 2(E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS})\approx 16 A^{-1}$ MeV. While the former is dominated by direct Coulomb effects, since Coulomb exchange cancels out to some extent with isospin symmetry breaking contributions originated form the nuclear strong force, the latter is sensitive to the difference in strength between the spin and spin-isospin chanels of the strong interaction.

We perform Time Dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations to investigate the small amplitude dipole response of selected neutron-rich nuclei and Sn isotopes. A detailed comparison with the dipole strength predicted by Random-Phase Approximation (RPA) calculations is presented for the first time. TDHF results are also confronted to Vlasov calculations, to explore up to which extent a semi-classical picture can explain the properties of the nuclear response. The focus is on the low-energy response, below the Giant Dipole Resonance region, where different modes of non negligible strength are identified. We show that the relative weight of these excitations evolves with nuclear global features, such as density profile and neutron skin, which in turn reflect impor tant properties of the nuclear effective interaction. A thorough analysis of the associated transition densities turns out to be quite useful to better characterize the mixed isoscalar(IS)/isovector(IV) nature of the different modes and their surface/volume components. In particular, we show that the dipole response in the so-called Pygmy Dipole Resonance region corresponds to isoscalar-like surface oscillations, of larger strength in nuclei with a more diffuse surface. The ratio between the IV and IS Energy Weighted Sum Rule fractions exhausted in this region is shown to almost linearly increase with the neutron skin thickness in Sn isotopes., Comment: 16 pages, 20 figures

This contribution reviews the present status on the available constraints to the nuclear equation of state (EoS) around saturation density from nuclear structure calculations on ground and collective excited state properties of atomic nuclei. It concentrates on predictions based on self-consistent mean-field calculations, which can be considered as an approximate realization of an exact energy density functional (EDF). EDFs are derived from effective interactions commonly fitted to nuclear masses, charge radii and, in many cases, also to pseudo-data such as nuclear matter properties. Although in a model dependent way, EDFs constitute nowadays a unique tool to reliably and consistently access bulk ground state and collective excited state properties of atomic nuclei along the nuclear chart as well as the EoS. For comparison, some emphasis is also given to the results obtained with the so called {\it ab initio} approaches that aim at describing the nuclear EoS based on interactions fitted to few-body data only. Bridging the existent gap between these two frameworks will be essential since it may allow to improve our understanding on the diverse phenomenology observed in nuclei. Examples on observations from astrophysical objects and processes sensitive to the nuclear EoS are also briefly discussed. As the main conclusion, the isospin dependence of the nuclear EoS around saturation density and, to a lesser extent, the nuclear matter incompressibility remain to be accurately determined. We analyze and propose a solution to the apparent inconsistency between our current knowledge of the Equation of State of asymmetric nuclear matter, the energy of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) in a heavy nucleus such as 208Pb, and the isospin symmetry breaking forces in the nuclear medium. This is achieved by performing state-of-the-art Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation calculations of the IAS that include all isospin symmetry breaking contributions. To this aim, we propose a new effective interaction that is successful in reproducing the IAS excitation energy without compromising other properties of finite nuclei., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Electron polarimeters based on Mott scattering are extensively used in different fields in physics such as atomic, nuclear or particle physics. This is because spin-dependent measurements gives additional information on the physical processes under study. The main quantity that needs to be understood in very much detail, both experimentally and theoretically, is the spin-polarization function, so called analyzing power or Sherman function. A detailed theoretical analysis on all the contributions to the effective interaction potential that are relevant at the typical electron beam energies and angles commonly used in the calibration of the experimental apparatus is presented. The main contribution leading the theoretical error on the Sherman function is found to correspond to radiative corrections that have been qualitatively estimated to be below the 0.5% for the considered kinematical conditions: unpolarized electron beams of few MeV elastically scattered from a gold and silver targets at backward angles., Comment: Accepted version

Density Functional Theory (DFT) is a powerful and accurate tool exploited in Nuclear Physics to investigate the ground-state and some collective properties of nuclei along the whole nuclear chart. Models based on DFT are, however, not suitable for the description of single-particle dynamics in nuclei. Following the field theoretical approach by A. Bohr and B. R. Mottelson to describe nuclear interactions between single-particle and vibrational degrees of freedom, we have undertaken important steps to build a microscopic dynamic nuclear model. In connection to that, one important issue that needs to be better understood is the renormalization of the effective interaction in the particle-vibration approach. One possible way to renormalize the interaction is the so called {\it subtraction method}. The model dependence in the correlations of the neutron-skin thickness in heavy nuclei with various symmetry energy parameters is analyzed by using several families of systematically varied microscopic mean field models. Such correlations show a varying degree of model dependence once the results for all the different families are combined. Some mean field models associated with similar values of the symmetry energy slope parameter at saturation density $L$, and pertaining to different families, yield a greater-than-expected spread in the neutron-skin thickness of the $^{208}$Pb nucleus. The effective value of the symmetry energy slope parameter $L_{\rm eff}$, determined by using the nucleon density profiles of the finite nucleus and the density derivative $S^\prime(\rho)$ of the symmetry energy starting from about saturation density up to low densities typical of the surface of nuclei, seems to account for the spread in the neutron-skin thickness for the models with similar $L$. The differences in the values of $L_{\rm eff}$ are mainly due to the small differences in the nucleon density distributions of heavy nuclei in the surface region and the behavior of the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities., Comment: 10 pages including 6 figures

We evaluate the second--order (beyond--mean--field) contribution to the equation of state of nuclear matter with the effective Skyrme force and use cutoff and dimensional regularizations to treat the ultraviolet divergence produced by the zero--range character of this interaction. An adjustment of the force parameters is then performed in both cases to remove any double counting generated by the explicit computation of beyond--mean--field corrections with the Skyrme force. In addition, we include at second order the rearrangement terms associated to the density--dependent part of the Skyrme force and discuss their effect. The information on the symmetry energy and its density dependence is deduced by comparing the available data on the electric dipole polarizability $\alpha_D$ of ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{120}$Sn, and ${}^{208}$Pb with the predictions of the Random Phase Approximation, using a representative set of nuclear energy density functionals. The calculated values of $\alpha_D$ are used to validate different correlations involving $\alpha_D$, the symmetry energy at the saturation density $J$, the corresponding slope parameter $L$ and the neutron skin thickness $\Delta r_{\!np}$, as suggested by the Droplet Model. A subset of models that reproduce simultaneously the measured polarizabilities in ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{120}$Sn, and ${}^{208}$Pb are employed to predict the values of the symmetry energy parameters at saturation density and $\Delta r_{\!np}$. The resulting intervals are: $J\!=\!30 \text{-}35$ MeV, $L\!=\!20 \text{-} 66$ MeV; and the values for $\Delta r_{\!np}$ in ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{120}$Sn, and ${}^{208}$Pb are in the ranges: 0.15\text{-}0.19 fm, 0.12\text{-}0.16 fm, and 0.13\text{-}0.19 fm, respectively. The strong correlation between the electric dipole polarizabilities of two nuclei is instrumental to predict the values of electric dipole polarizabilities in other nuclei., Comment: 12 pages, 2 tables and 6 figures

The outer crust structure and composition of a cold, non-accreting magnetar is studied. We model the outer crust to be made of fully equilibrated matter where ionized nuclei form a Coulomb crystal embedded in an electron gas. The main effects of the strong magnetic field are those of quantizing the electron motion in Landau levels and of modifying the nuclear single particle levels producing, on average, an increased binding of nucleons in nuclei present in the Coulomb lattice. The effect of an homogeneous and constant magnetic field on nuclear masses has been predicted by using a covariant density functional, in which induced currents and axial deformation due to the presence of a magnetic field that breaks time-reversal symmetry have been included self-consistently in the nucleon and meson equations of motion. Although not yet observed, for $B\gtrsim 10^{16}$G both effects contribute to produce different compositions and to enlarge the range of pressures typically present in common neutron stars. Specifically, in such a regime, the magnetic field effects on nuclei favor the appearance of heavier nuclei at low pressures. As $B$ increases, such heavier nuclei are also preferred up to larger pressures. We investigate the impact of the neutron-skin thickness Delta(R) on the energy difference between the anti-analog giant dipole resonance (AGDR), E(AGDR), and the isobaric analog state (IAS), E(IAS), in a heavy nucleus such as 208Pb. For guidance, we first develop a simple and analytic, yet physical, approach based on the Droplet Model that linearly connects the energy difference E(AGDR)-E(IAS) with Delta(R). To test this correlation on more fundamental grounds, we employ a family of systematically varied Skyrme energy density functionals where variations on the value of the symmetry energy at saturation density J are explored. The calculations have been performed within the fully self consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) plus charge-exchange random phase approximation (RPA) framework. We confirm the linear correlation within our microscopic apporach and, by comparing our results with available experimental data in 208Pb, we find that our analysis is consistent with Delta(R) = 0.204 \pm 0.009 fm, J = 31.4 \pm 0.5 MeV and a slope parameter of the symmetry energy at saturation of L = 76.4 \pm 5.4 MeV - the attached errors correspond to a lower-limit estimate of the systematic plus experimental uncertainties. These results are in agreement with those extracted from different experimental data albeit, L and Delta(R) are somewhat large when compared to previous estimations based on giant resonance studies., Comment: Submitted to Phys. In this contribution, we review some works related with the extraction of the symmetry energy parameters from isovector nuclear excitations, like the giant resonances. Then, we move to the general issue of how to assess whether correlations between a parameter of the nuclear equation of state and a nuclear observable are robust or not. We study symmetric nuclear matter at finite temperature, with particular emphasis on the liquid-gas phase transition. We use a standard covariance analysis to propagate statistical uncertainties from the density functional to the thermodynamic properties. We use four functionals with known covariance matrices to obtain as wide a set of results as possible. Our findings suggest that thermodynamical properties are very well constrained by fitting data at zero temperature. The propagated statistical errors in the liquid-gas phase transition parameters are relatively small., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. We present the covariance analysis of two successful nuclear energy density functionals, (i) a non-relativistic Skyrme functional built from a zero-range effective interaction, and (ii) a relativistic nuclear energy density functional based on density dependent meson-nucleon couplings. The covariance analysis is a useful tool for understanding the limitations of a model, the correlations between observables and the statistical errors. We show, for our selected test nucleus 208Pb, that when the constraint on a property A included in the fit is relaxed, correlations with other observables B become larger; on the other hand, when a strong constraint is imposed on A, the correlations with other properties become very small. We analyze the influence of the single-particle structure on the neutron density distribution and the neutron skin in Ca, Ni, Zr, Sn, and Pb isotopes. The nucleon density distributions are calculated in the Hartree-Fock+BCS approach with the SLy4 Skyrme force. A close correlation is found between the quantum numbers of the valence neutrons and the changes in the position and the diffuseness of the nuclear surface, which in turn affect the neutron skin thickness. Neutrons in the valence orbitals with low principal quantum number and high angular momentum mainly displace the position of the neutron surface outwards, while neutrons with high principal quantum number and low angular momentum basically increase the diffuseness of the neutron surface. The impact of the valence shell neutrons on the tail of the neutron density distribution is discussed., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

The recent progress in the studies of nuclear charge-exchange excitations with localized covariant density functional theory is briefly presented, by taking the fine structure of spin-dipole excitations in 16O as an example. The density dependence of the symmetry energy around saturation density, characterized by the slope parameter L, is studied using information provided by the neutron skin thickness in finite nuclei. An estimate for L is obtained from experimental data on neutron skins extracted from antiprotonic atoms. We also discuss the ability of parity-violating elastic electron scattering to obtain information on the neutron skin thickness in 208Pb and to constrain the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. The size and shape of the neutron density distribution of 208Pb predicted by mean-field models is briefly addressed. A completely microscopic beyond mean-field approach has been elaborated to overcome some intrinsic limitations of self-consistent mean-field schemes applied to nuclear systems, such as the incapability to produce some properties of single-particle states (e.g. spectroscopic factors), as well as of collective states (e.g. their damping width and their gamma decay to the ground state or to low lying states). Since commonly used effective interactions are fitted at the mean-field level, one should aim at refitting them including the desired beyond mean-field contributions in the refitting procedure. If zero-range interactions are used, divergences arise. We study the electric dipole polarizability $\alpha_D$ in ${}^{208}$Pb based on the predictions of a large and representative set of relativistic and non-relativistic nuclear mean field models. We adopt the droplet model as a guide to better understand the correlations between $\alpha_D$ and other isovector observables. Insights from the droplet model suggest that the product of $\alpha_D$ and the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density $J$ is much better correlated with the neutron skin thickness $\Delta r_{np}$ of ${}^{208}$Pb than the polarizability alone. Correlations of $\alpha_D J$ with $\Delta r_{np}$ and with the symmetry energy slope parameter $L$ suggest that $\alpha_D J$ is a strong isovector indicator. Hence, we explore the possibility of constraining the isovector sector of thenuclear energy density functional by comparing our theoretical predictions against measurements of both $\alpha_D$ and the parity-violating asymmetry in ${}^{208}$Pb. We find that the recent experimental determination of $\alpha_D$ in ${}^{208}$Pb in combination with the range for the symmetry energy at saturation density $J=[31\pm (2)_{\rm est.}]$\,MeV suggests $\Delta r_{np}({}^{208}{\rm Pb}) = 0.165 \pm (0.009)_{\rm exp.} \pm (0.013)_{\rm theo.} \pm (0.021)_{\rm est.} {\rm fm}$ and $L= 43 \pm(6)_{\rm exp.} \pm (8)_{\rm theo.}\pm(12)_{\rm est.}$ MeV.

Experimental and theoretical efforts are being devoted to the study of observables that can shed light on the properties of the nuclear symmetry energy. We present our new results on the excitation energy [X. Roca-Maza et al., Phys. Rev. C 87, 034301 (2013)] and polarizability of the Isovector Giant Quadrupole Resonance (IVGQR), which has been the object of new experimental investigation [S. S. Henshaw et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 222501 (2011)]. We also present our theoretical analysis on the parity violating asymmetry at the kinematics of the Lead Radius Experiment [S. Abrahamyan et al. (PREx Collaboration), Phys. Zero-range effective interactions are commonly used in nuclear physics to describe a many-body system in the mean-field framework. If they are employed in beyond- mean-field models, an artificial ultraviolet divergence is generated by the zero-range of the interaction. We analyze this problem in symmetric nuclear matter with the t0-t3 Skyrme model. In this case, the second-order energy correction diverges linearly with the momentum cutoff. After that, we extend the work to the case of nuclear matter with the full Skyrme interaction. A strong divergence related to the velocity-dependent terms of the interaction is obtained. Moreover, a global fit can be simultaneously performed for both symmetric and nuclear matter with different neutron-to-proton ratios. Recent improvements in the experimental determination of properties of the Isovector Giant Quadrupole Resonance (IVGQR), as demonstrated in the A=208 mass region, may be instrumental for characterizing the isovector channel of the effective nuclear interaction. We analyze properties of the IVGQR in 208Pb, using both macroscopic and microscopic approaches. The microscopic method is based on families of non-relativistic and covariant Energy Density Functionals (EDF), characterized by a systematic variation of isoscalar and isovector properties of the corresponding nuclear matter equations of state. The macroscopic approach yields an explicit dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy at some subsaturation density, for instance S(\rho=0.1 fm^{-3}), or the neutron skin thickness \Delta r_{np} of a heavy nucleus, on the excitation energies of isoscalar and isovector GQRs. Using available data it is found that S(\rho=0.1 fm{}^{-3})=23.3 +/- 0.6 MeV. Results obtained with the microscopic framework confirm the correlation of the \Delta r_{np} to the isoscalar and isovector GQR energies, as predicted by the macroscopic model. By exploiting this correlation together with the experimental values for the isoscalar and isovector GQR energies, we estimate \Delta r_{np} = 0.14 +/- 0.03 fm for 208Pb, and the slope parameter of the symmetry energy: L = 37 +/- 18 MeV.

We present a new Skyrme energy density functional (EDF) named SAMi [Phys. Rev. C 86 031306(R)]. This interaction has been accurately calibrated to reproduce properties of doubly-magic nuclei and infinite nuclear matter. The novelties introduced in the model and fitting protocol of SAMi are crucial for a better description of the Gamow-Teller Resonance (GTR). Those are, on one side, the two-component spin-orbit potential needed for describing different proton high-angular momentum spin-orbit splitings and, on the other side, the careful description of the empirical hierarchy and positive values found in previous analysis of the spin (G_0) and spin-isospin (G_0^') Landau-Migdal parameters: 0 < G_0 < G_0^', a feature that many of available Skyrme forces fail to reproduce. When employed within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation, SAMi produces results on ground and excited state nuclear properties that are in good agreement with experimental findings. The static dipole polarizability, $\alpha_{\rm D}$, in ${}^{208}$Pb has been recently measured with high-resolution via proton inelastic scattering at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP). This observable is thought to be intimately connected with the neutron skin thickness, $r_{\rm skin}$, of the same nucleus and, more fundamentally, it is believed to be associated with the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Electron scattering on unstable nuclei is planned in future facilities of the GSI and RIKEN upgrades. Motivated by this fact, we study theoretical predictions for elastic electron scattering in the N=82, N=50, and N=14 isotonic chains from very proton-deficient to very proton-rich isotones. We compute the scattering observables by performing Dirac partial-wave calculations. The charge density of the nucleus is obtained with a covariant nuclear mean-field model that accounts for the low-energy electromagnetic structure of the nucleon. For the discussion of the dependence of scattering observables at low-momentum transfer on the gross properties of the charge density, we fit Helm model distributions to the self-consistent mean-field densities. We find that the changes shown by the electric charge form factor along each isotonic chain are strongly correlated with the underlying proton shell structure of the isotones. We conclude that elastic electron scattering experiments in isotones can provide valuable information about the filling order and occupation of the single-particle levels of protons., Comment: 13 pages; 19 figures

A correct determination of the spin-isospin properties of the nuclear effective interaction should lead, among other improvements, to an accurate description of the Gamow-Teller Resonance (GTR). These nuclear excitations impact on a variety of physical processes: from the response in charge-exchange reactions of nuclei naturally present in the Earth, to the description of the stellar nucleosynthesis, and of the pre-supernova explosion core-collapse evolution of massive stars in the Universe. A reliable description of the GTR provides also stringent tests for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay calculations. We present a new Skyrme interaction as accurate as previous forces in the description of finite nuclei and of uniform matter properties around saturation density, and that account well for the GTR in ${}^{48}$Ca, ${}^{90}$Zr and ${}^{208}$Pb, the Isobaric Analog Resonance and the Spin Dipole Resonance in ${}^{90}$Zr and ${}^{208}$Pb., Comment: Predictions on the IAR and SDR and comparison with the SGII interaction for the GTRs where added

The symmetry energy contribution to the nuclear Equation of State (EoS) impacts various phenomena in nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, and nuclear reactions. Its determination is a key objective of contemporary nuclear physics with consequences for the understanding of dense matter within neutron stars. We examine the results of laboratory experiments that have provided initial constraints on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence at and somewhat below normal nuclear matter density. Some of these constraints have been derived from properties of nuclei. Others have been derived from the nuclear response to electroweak and hadronic probes. We also examine the most frequently used theoretical models that predict the symmetry energy and its slope. By comparing existing constraints on the symmetry pressure to theories, we demonstrate how the contribution of the three-body force, an essential ingredient in neutron matter models, can be determined., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

The relation between the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density and the neutron skin thickness is investigated. Constraints on the slope of the symmetry energy are deduced from the neutron skin data obtained in experiments with antiprotonic atoms. Two types of neutron skin are distinguished: the "surface" and the "bulk". A combination of both types forms neutron skin in most of nuclei. The accurate characterization of the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence is one of the outstanding open problems in nuclear physics. A promising nuclear observable in order to constrain the density dependence of the symmetry energy at saturation is the neutron skin thickness of medium and heavy nuclei. Recently, a low-energy peak in the isovector dipole response of neutron-rich nuclei has been discovered that may be correlated with the neutron skin thickness. The existence of this correlation is currently under debate due to our limited experimental knowledge on the microscopic structure of such a peak. We present a detailed analysis of Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) plus random phase approximation (RPA) predictions for the dipole response in several neutron-rich nuclei and try to elucidate whether models of common use in nuclear physics confirm or dismiss its possible connection with the neutron skin thickness. The recent high-resolution measurement of the electric dipole (E1) polarizability (alphad) in 208Pb [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 062502 (2011)] provides a unique constraint on the neutron-skin thickness of this nucleus. The neutron-skin thickness (rskin) of 208Pb is a quantity of critical importance for our understanding of a variety of nuclear and astrophysical phenomena. To assess the model dependence of the correlation between alphad and rskin, we carry out systematic calculations for 208Pb, 132Sn, and 48Ca based on the nuclear density functional theory (DFT) using both non-relativistic and relativistic energy density functionals (EDFs). Our analysis indicates that whereas individual models exhibit a linear dependence between alphad and rskin, this correlation is not universal when one combines predictions from a host of different models. By averaging over these model predictions, we provide estimates with associated systematic errors for rskin and alphad for the nuclei under consideration. We conclude that precise measurements of rskin in both 48Ca and 208Pb---combined with the recent measurement of alphad---should significantly constrain the isovector sector of the nuclear energy density functional., Comment: Manuscript contains 5 pages, 2 figures, and 1 table. The isospin character, the collective or single-particle nature, and the sensitivity to the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy of the low-energy isovector dipole response (known as pygmy dipole resonance) are nowadays under debate. In the present work we study, within the fully self-consistent non-relativistic mean field (MF) approach based on Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation (RPA), the measured even-even nuclei ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{132}$Sn and ${}^{208}$Pb. To analyze the model dependence in the predictions of the pygmy dipole strength, we employ three different Skyrme parameter sets. We find that both the isoscalar and the isovector dipole responses of all three nuclei show a low-energy peak that increases in magnitude, and is shifted to larger excitation energies, with increasing values of the slope of the symmetry energy at saturation. We highlight the fact that the collectivity associated with the RPA state(s) contributing to this peak is different in the isoscalar and isovector case, or in other words it depends on the external probe. While the response of these RPA states to an isovector operator does not show a clear collective nature, the response to an isoscalar operator is recognizably collective, for {\it all} analyzed nuclei and {\it all} studied interactions., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Although ab-initio calculations of relativistic Brueckner theory lead to large scalar isovector fields in nuclear matter, at present, successful versions of covariant density functional theory neglect the interactions in this channel. A new high precision density functional DD-ME$\delta$ is presented which includes four mesons $\sigma$, $\omega$, $\delta$, and $\rho$ with density dependent meson-nucleon couplings. It is based to a large extent on microscopic ab-initio calculations in nuclear matter. Only four of its parameters are determined by adjusting to binding energies and charge radii of finite nuclei. The other parameters, in particular the density dependence of the meson-nucleon vertices, are adjusted to non-relativistic and relativistic Brueckner calculations of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter. The isovector effective mass $m_{p}^{\ast}-m_{n}^{\ast}$ derived from relativistic Brueckner theory is used to determine the coupling strength of the $\delta$-meson and its density dependence., Comment: Published Phys. We review and extend with nonrelativistic nuclear mean field calculations a previous study of the impact of the nuclear symmetry energy on the structure and composition of the outer crust of nonaccreting neutron stars. First, we develop a simple "toy model" to understand the most relevant quantities determining the structure and composition of the outer crust: the nuclear symmetry energy and the pressure of the electron gas. While the latter is a well determined quantity, the former ---specially its density dependence--- still lacks an accurate characterization. We thus focus on the influence of the nuclear symmetry energy on the crustal composition. For that, we employ different nuclear models that are accurate in the description of terrestrial nuclei. We show that those models with stiffer symmetry energies ---namely, those that generate thicker neutron skins in heavy nuclei and have smaller symmetry energies at subnormal nuclear densities--- generate more exotic isotopes in the stellar crust than their softer counterparts., Comment: Contribution to the book "Neutron Star Crust". We study whether the neutron skin thickness $\Delta r_{np}$ of ${}^{208}$Pb originates from the bulk or from the surface of the neutron and proton density distributions in mean field models. We find that the size of the bulk contribution to $\Delta r_{np}$ of ${}^{208}$Pb strongly depends on the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy, while the surface contribution does not. We note that most mean field models predict a neutron density for ${}^{208}$Pb between the halo and skin type limits. We investigate the dependence of parity- violating electron scattering at the kinematics of the PREX experiment on the shape of the nucleon densities predicted by the mean field models for ${}^{208}$Pb. A precise determination of the neutron skin thickness of a heavy nucleus sets a basic constraint on the nuclear symmetry energy (the neutron skin thickness is the difference of the neutron and proton rms radii of the nucleus). The parity radius experiment (PREX) may achieve it by electroweak parity-violating electron scattering (PVES) on 208Pb. We investigate PVES in nuclear mean field approach to allow the accurate extraction of the neutron skin thickness of 208Pb from the parity-violating asymmetry probed in the experiment. We demonstrate a high linear correlation between the parity-violating asymmetry and the neutron skin thickness in successful mean field forces as the best means to constrain the neutron skin of 208Pb from PREX, without assumptions on the neutron density shape.
