Description of the subject. It is common for cultivated plants to face a single water deficit event, but in the wild plants are exposed to repeated cycles of drought and rehydration and the consequences of such repetitive events are less well understood. Objectives. The objective of this study was to understand how crambe’s performance under water limiting conditions is affected by previous exposure to water deficit. Method. Crambe plants were grown in 5.5 l pots and exposed to one (1WD) or three (3WD) water deficit cycles. As reference, plants were grown with daily irrigation. At the end of three water deficit cycles, the leaf anatomy, leaf relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance, extravasation of electrolytes and chlorophyll fluorescence were analyzed. Results. Under water deficit, RWC significantly decreased in 1WD plants. However, in plants of the FMS CR 1307 lineage, the application of three water deficit cycles did not change the RWC and decreased the stomatal conductance and extravasation of electrolytes compared to the reference plants. Likewise, the kinetic difference in chlorophyll fluorescence (K-band and L-band) indicated improved stability and efficiency in utilizing energy. Conclusions. Our results show that the drought stress imposed three times induced adjustments in the physiology and anatomy of crambe plants. The FMS CR 1307 lineage was better able to store information from previous stressful events than the FMS Brilhante and FMS CR 1326 lineages, showing better performance under water deficit.

Os cafeeiros conilon podem apresentar padrões divergentes para o acúmulo de matéria seca e desenvolvimento de frutos, sejam eles resultantes de fatores genéticos ou ambientais. O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar o acúmulo de matéria seca em órgãos aéreos e a produtividade do café conilon cultivado em condições de irrigação ou de sequeiro. O experimento foi realizado no Estado da Bahia (Brasil), localizado no Atlântico, ao longo de dois anos de avaliação. Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em parcelas subdivididas, com 14 repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de dois tipos de cultivo, sendo estes, irrigado e de sequeiro, nas parcelas e o tempo ao longo do ciclo reprodutivo nas sub-parcelas. O crescimento reprodutivo foi avaliado a partir de dez dias após a primeira floração e, em seguida, a cada 28 dias, até a completa maturação dos frutos. O acúmulo de matéria seca nos frutos do café conilon pode ser bem explicado usando modelos sigmoidais; enquanto o número de ramos e o acúmulo de biomassa nas folhas presentes se ajustam a modelos lineares, independentemente do cultivo irrigado ou de sequeiro. A magnitude e intensidade do acúmulo de biomassa, no entanto, é influenciada pelo uso da irrigação, o que provoca ganhos no acúmulo de biomassa por fruto.

Intercropped systems with Conilon coffee might provide a better environment for coffee production. The aim of this study was to assess the microclimate and development of Conilon coffee intercropped with papaya trees. Papaya was planted with spacing of 3.20 x 2.40 m. The coffee trees were planted after eight months, with spacing of 3.20 x 1.60 m, in-between papaya trees (in the same row). The measurements were taken 0, 40 and 80 cm away from the coffee plants, both in the north and south direction. Concomitantly, an adjoining full sunlight coffee system (not intercropped) was also assessed. The measurements included atmospheric parameters (temperature, irradiance, and relative humidity) and vegetative parameters for the coffee plants (leaf area, relative chlorophyll index, length of plagiotropic branches, length of orthotopic branches and number of nodes) in three periods of the year. The intercropped system of Conilon coffee and papaya trees led to a decrease in both irradiance and temperature, and higher means of relative humidity during daytime in all the periods assessed, which contributes to a better environment for coffee cultivation. The shadow provided by papaya trees in the coffee plants contributed to a higher leaf area but did not affect neither the growth of both plagiotropic and orthotopic branches, nor the number of nodes and the etiolation. The intercropped system of Conilon coffee and papaya trees may be potentially used as a farming system to mitigate climate change.

ABSTRACT There is currently a lack of information regarding the performance of cover crops grown in the Coastal Tablelands region in the North of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, where zero tillage is increasingly being adopted. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of six cover crops (ruzi grass, jack bean, and the millets ADR 300, ADR 500, ADRf 6010, and BRS 1501) under two irrigation regimes. A field experiment setup was based on randomized blocks with split plots and four repetitions. Shoot dry matter content, plant height, leaf area, chlorophyll fluorescence, and root growth of the cover crops were evaluated. The irrigation regime influences the agronomic performance of most of the cover crops, with the exception of jack bean and ADRf 6010 millet, which were tolerant to water deficiency, based on our evaluations of the variables shoot dry matter, plant height, and leaf area. In terms of biomass production, ADRf 6010 millet is the most suitable crop for use in conservation systems under conditions of water stress in this region.

The objective of this study was to increase the shoot and tuberous roots production of cassava to table, in São Mateus, ES. The experimental design was a completely randomized block design in a split-plot with four replications. The plots consisted of five water levels (T1 - non-irrigated treatment; T2 - irrigated treatment with 33% ETc replacement (crop evapotranspiration); T3 - 66% ETc replacement; T4 - 100% ETc replacement; and T5 - with replacement of 133% of ETc). The subplots consisted of three times (90, 180 and 300 DAE - days after emergence) of height and diameter measurement. The highest yields of table cassava are achieved with irrigation depth of 136% and 139% of ETc for root. total and commercial respectively, under the edaphoclimatic conditions studied in the northern state of Espirito Santo. Plants with larger irrigation depths grew faster in height and diameter and produced more. There was a positive correlation when the relationship between the variable fresh air mass (MFPA) and commercial (PC) and total (PT) productivity was verified.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate root development and productivity of ‘Pérola’ pineapple as a function of split N and K fertilization and fertigation management. Four different split nitrogen and potassium fertilizations were evaluated in combination, as well as four different fertigation managements. Root samples were analyzed using the Safira software and surface area, length, root volume per soil volume, root diameter, dry mass, specific surface and specific length were quantified. Average fruit mass and average productivity were also quantified. The different split fertilizations and fertigation management alternatives caused changes in the root system of ‘Pérola’ pineapple. Regarding dry root mass per cm3 of soil, irrigated and fertigated plants split in twenty-seven N applications and four K applications, was 0.106 g.cm3, while irrigated and fertigated plants split in fifty-four N applications and four K applications was 0.523 g.cm3. Regarding productivity and average fruit mass, monthly applications and in four K applications until the ninth month of plant age promote greater increments, while split nitrogen fertilization showed no influence.

The management of initial planting density can be a strategy to increase barium phytoextraction from soil, reducing the time required for soil decontamination. To delimit the ideal planting density for barium (Ba) phytoremediation using Typha domingensis, we conducted a 300-day experiment in an area accidentally contaminated with barite. Four initial planting densities were tested: 4, 8, 12, and 16 plantsm−2 (D4, D8, D12, and D16 treatments, respectively). Plant development was evaluated periodically, and the phytoextraction efficiency was determined at the end of the trial. The initial planting density affected Ba phytoremediation by T. domingensis monoculture. Phytoextraction potential was better represented by the mass-based translocation factor (mTF) than the concentration-based translocation factor. D16 promoted the highest final number of plants and biomass production, but the mass of Ba in the aerial part did not differ among D8, D12, and D16. D4 resulted in more Ba accumulated belowground than aboveground (6.3 times higher), whereas D12 and D16 achieved the greatest mTFs. Higher absorption of Ba from soil can be achieved using less T. domingensis individuals at the beginning of the treatment (D4 and D8) but with high accumulation in belowground tissues. We conclude that the D8 density is considered the most appropriate if considering the phytoextraction potential and field management facilitated using fewer plants.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the concentrations and accumulation of macronutrients in conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) fruit, and their concentrations in leaves, over two years, in irrigated and nonirrigated coffee plants. Three-year-old conilon coffee plants of the cultivar Emcapa 8111 genotype 02 were used. An experimental design was carried out in randomized complete blocks, in a split-plot arrangement, with 14 replicates. The main plot factor was irrigation versus nonirrigation of coffee plants, and the split-plot factor was different fruit and leaf collection times. Collections began 10 days after the beginning of flowering and were performed on average every 28 days, until full fruit ripening. At each sampling date, five plants per treatment were picked out, by collecting one plagiotropic branch by plant, separated into fruit and leaves. Each part was dried, weighed, and subjected to the chemical analysis. Macronutrient accumulations and their accumulation rates were determined. According to the regression analysis of the data, fruit macronutrient accumulation curves fit best to sigmoidal equations. Irrigation affects the macronutrient dynamics in fruit and leaves during the fruiting phase of conilon coffee, and increases the accumulation of nutrients in the plant tissues. The macronutrients found in greater quantities are N, K, and Ca, in fruit and leaves, regardless of the irrigation treatment.

The cultivation of Conilon coffee in the north of the State of Espirito Santo in Brazil, has largely been carried out under irrigation, due to the irregular distribution of rainfall. Irrigation and fertilisation management in coffee is directly related to yield and production costs, with fertigation emerging as an alternative, with nutrient being applied via the irrigation water, increasing the efficiency of the application. The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate vegetative growth in Conilon coffee irrigated with different instalments and doses of nitrogen and potassium, applied through fertigation. The work was carried out in a 24-month old commercial plantation of Conilon coffee (Coffea canephora), located in the town of São Mateus, in the State of Espirito Santo in Brazil. A completely randomised experimental design was used, in subdivided lots with four replications. The lots corresponded to the doses of nitrogen and potassium, with 60%, 80%, 100%, 120%, 140% and 160% of the recommended dose being applied. The sub-lots corresponded to 3, 9, 15 and 21 instalments of the fertilizer for the crop year. Vegetative growth in the orthotropic and plagiotropic branches was evaluated every 90 days. An increase in instalment promoted greater growth in the orthotropic branch and plagiotropic branch III, with the doses having no influence on the growth of these branches in the coffee plant. The plagiotropic branch II displayed maximum vegetative growth at the dose of 60% in nine instalments, and of 115% in 15 instalments. = O cultivo do café Conilon no Norte Capixaba tem sido feito predominantemente por meio de irrigação em razão das condições de distribuição irregular das chuvas. O manejo da irrigação e a adubação do cafeeiro estão diretamente ligados à produtividade e ao custo de produção, sendo que a fertirrigação surge como alternativa de aplicação de nutrientes via água de irrigação, aumentando a eficiência de aplicação. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o crescimento vegetativo do cafeeiro Conilon irrigado com diferentes parcelamentos e doses de nitrogênio e potássio, aplicados via fertirrigação. O trabalho foi conduzido em lavoura comercial de café Conilon (Coffea canephora), localizada no município de São Mateus, ES, com 24 meses de idade. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas com quatro repetições. As parcelas corresponderam às doses de nitrogênio e potássio, sendo aplicado: 60%, 80%, 100%, 120%, 140% e 160% da dose recomendada. As subparcelas corresponderam ao parcelamento das adubações, sendo: 3, 9, 15 e 21 vezes, para o ano safra. O crescimento vegetativo de ramos ortotrópicos e plagiotrópicos foi avaliado a cada 90 dias. O aumento do parcelamento proporcionou maior crescimento para os ramos ortotrópico e plagiotrópicos III, sendo que as doses não influenciaram no crescimento desses ramos do cafeeiro. O ramo plagiotrópico II apresentou máximo crescimento vegetativo na dose de 60%, parcelado em nove vezes, e 115%, para parcelamento em quinze vezes.

In the state of Espírito Santo it is notorious the importance of agriculture for the State economy, several crops have been irrigated due to irregular distribution of rainfall. The daily reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is an important variable in irrigation management, making it possible to quantify the water demand of a culture and region. This study aimed to compare interpolation methods to the spatial distribution of daily ETo. The study included the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, with a total area of 46,184.1 km2 . Fifteen automatic meteorological stations were selected as the basis for interpolation and ten for cross-validation. The daily data analyzed were from the period 2010-2012, using three methods of interpolation, employed: the Kriging geostatistical method and deterministic methods Distance Square Inverse (IQD) and Spline Tensioned. Three sets of data were interpolated. The IQD interpolation presented the best performance for the variable among the three methods, presenting lower deviation and variation among the ETo values estimated by the Penman-Monteith method. The IQD interpolator showed, as a good method to estimate the daily reference evapotranspiration variable in places where do not have weather stations installed. The estimated values of ETo obtained by IQD interpolation method can be used with confidence in irrigation management. = No estado do Espírito Santo é notório o destaque da agricultura na sua economia, mas, devido a irregularidade na distribuição das chuvas, as culturas têm sido irrigadas, sendo assim, o manejo da irrigação se torna importante para a produção das culturas. A interpolação IQD apresentou o melhor desempenho para a variável, entre os três métodos, apresentando menor desvio e variação entre os valores de ETo estimados pelo método de Penman-Monteith. O interpolador IQD mostrou ser um bom método para estimar a variável evapotranspiração de referência diária em locais onde não tem estações meteorológicas instaladas. Os valores estimados de ETo, obtidos pelo método de interpolação IQD, podem ser usados com confiança no manejo da irrigação.

Phytoremediation is a technique that has been used with increasing frequency to decontaminate soils treated with herbicides that have long - term residual effects, such as sulfentrazone. The goal was to assess phytoremediation of the herbicide sulfentrazone under field conditions by the species Canavalia ensiformis and Crotalaria juncea . The treatments consisted of combinations of the plant species C. ensiformis and C. juncea plus a control treatment (with manual weeding) and four doses of the herbicide sulfentrazone. The experimental design used herein was a split - plot randomized block design with four replicates per subplot. The treatments were kept in the field for 75 days. After this period, the experimental area was again furrowed and fertilized, considering the requirements for Pennisetum glaucum , a plant used as an indicator of the presence of sulfentrazone. Thirty - four days after sowing pearl millet, the fresh and dry shoot masses of the plants were assessed. At the end of the cycle, the plant height, stem diameter, internode length, number of leaves, number of panicles, and fresh and dry panicle masses were determined. Previous cultivation of phytoremediation species C. ensiformis and C. juncea promotes sulfentrazone remediation. C. ensiformis is the most efficient species for the decontamination of the herbicide sulfentrazone under field conditions.

The pepper is an important vegetable in Brazilian agriculture, with many culinary uses. For satisfactory crop development, suitable irrigation management is necessary. Based on the importance of this crop, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of irrigation depths on the production components of two species of pepper of the genus Capsicum. The experiment was carried out under field conditions on a farm of CEUNES/ UFES in São Mateus, in the State of Espirito Santo, Brazil (ES). The experimental design was completely randomised into blocks of split lots, having five lots, two sub-lots and four replications. The lots comprised the irrigation depths of 40%, 70%, 100%, 130% and 160% of the Penman Monteith reference evapotranspiration (ETo) (FAO 56). In the sub-lots, two species of pepper were evaluated (the Lady’s Finger variety of Capsicum baccatum, and the Yellow Lantern variety of Capsicum chinense) employing drip irrigation. Under evaluation were productivity, average weight, average diameter and fruit length. Irrigation depth affected productivity and average fruit weight only. For the soil and climate conditions of São Mateus, ES, the production components of the Yellow Lantern pepper were higher than those of the Lady’s Finger. = A pimenta é uma olerícola importante na agricultura brasileira, tendo em vista o seu vasto uso culinário. Para que a cultura estudada se desenvolva satisfatoriamente é necessário o manejo adequado da irrigação. Com base na importância dessa cultura, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de lâminas de irrigação nos componentes de produção de duas espécies de pimenta do gênero Capsicum. O experimento foi desenvolvido em condições de campo, na fazenda do CEUNES/UFES, em São Mateus, no Espírito Santo, Brasil. Empregou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos inteiramente casualizados, em parcela subdividida, com quatro repetições. As parcelas consistiram de cinco lâminas de irrigação, correspondendo a 40%, 70%, 100%, 130%, 160% da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo) de Penman Monteith (FAO 56). Nas subparcelas foram avaliadas duas espécies de pimenta, sendo: Capsicum baccatum, da variedade Dedo-de-Moça, e a Capsicum chinense, da variedade De Cheiro. Avaliou-se a produtividade, a massa média, o diâmetro médio, bem como o comprimento dos frutos. As lâminas de irrigação apresentaram efeitos apenas para a produtividade e para a massa média dos frutos de pimenteira. Os componentes de produção da pimenta de ‘De Cheiro’ foram superiores aos do ‘Dedo-de-Moça’, para as condições edafoclimáticas de São Mateus-ES.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a estimativa da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo), para a região Sudeste do Brasil, a partir de dados meteorológicos limitados. O método de Penman-Monteith FAO 56 (PMp) foi tomado como referência. Três cenários com dados meteorológicos limitados, obtidos de rede de estações automáticas, foram utilizados para estimação da ETo: método padrão (PMp) com uso da radiação solar estimada pelo balanço entre ondas curtas e longas (PMKrs); método padrão com uso da pressão de vapor estimada pelas temperaturas máxima e mínima, e pela umidade relativa do ar (PMea); e método padrão com uso da velocidade de vento constante (2 m s-1; PMu2). A ETo também foi estimada pelos métodos de Hargreaves-Samani (HS) e de Turc. Os modelos foram analisados por meio de indicadores estatísticos de desvio absoluto médio (MBE), erro relativo (ER), raiz quadrada do erro quadrático médio (RMSE) e índice de Willmott (d). O método PMea é a melhor alternativa para estimar a ETo, seguido pelos métodos PMu2, para Espírito Santo e Rio de Janeiro, e PMKrs, para São Paulo e Minas Gerais. Os maiores erros são obtidos com o método de Hargreaves-Samani, que superestimou a ETo em comparação ao PMp, para a maioria das estações avaliadas.

Advento das mudanças climáticas, a escassez hídrica torna-se fator de risco para agricultura, responsável pela retirada de 70% da água doce dos mananciais. A fim de minimizar os desperdícios, buscam-se sistemas de irrigação eficientes bem manejados. Uma forma de verifica a eficiência de um sistema de irrigação é por meio da avaliação da uniformidade de aplicação de água. O coeficiente de uniformidade de Christiansen (CUC) é uma ferramenta eficiente e bastante utilizada. A fim de avaliar o desempenho de um sistema de irrigação fixa em microaspersor de alta vazão, para as condições climáticas do norte do Espírito Santo, avaliou-se o CUC para o sistema de irrigação operando sobre as pressões de serviço de 155, 207, 258 e 310 kPa, em diferentes horários (04h00min, 12h00min, e 21h00min) no período de setembro de 2015 a julho de 2016, compreendendo a estações secas e chuvosas. O CUC variou de 77,4 a 93,5% em virtude do horário e pressão utilizada.

Objetivou-se a partir de uma equação ajustada, estimar a erosividade da chuva para os dois anos de setembro de 2014 a agosto de 2015 e setembro de 2015 a agosto de 2016 para o município de São Mateus-ES. Os dados de precipitação foram obtidos na Estação Meteorológica Automática localizada no Centro Universitário Norte do Espírito Santo-Ceunes. A erosividade da chuva foi estimada a partir da equação EC30 = 6,4492*pi – 391,63, em que EC30 = produto da energia cinética da chuva pela sua intensidade máxima em 30 mm (MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1) e pi = precipitação média anual (mm).A precipitação total foi de 765,4 mm e 272,4 para os períodos de 2014/2015 e 2015/2016, respectivamente. Com precipitações médias de 63,8 mm (1° ano) e 22,7 mm (2° ano). O mês de outubro de 2014 apresentou a maior precipitação mensal, 183,6 mm. A energia cinética foi de 4544,59 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 para o 1° ano (2014/2015) e de 1.365,13 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 para o 2° ano (2015/2016). A erosividade da chuva para o período foi de 5.909,72 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1. O primeiro ano (2014/2015) apresentou a maior precitipação total. A erosividade da chuva para o período foi de 5.909,72 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1, sendo considerada como média-forte.

Tillage systems are a key element of the technology of crop production, both with a view to crop yield and from the perspective of soil conservation and sustainability of the production system. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the effects of five tillage systems on the physical properties of a cohesive Yellow Argisol. The experiment was installed in the field on January 21, 2011 and lasted 260 days, in an area previously used as pasture with Brachiaria grass without liming or fertilization, but irrigated by a low pressure spray system. The treatments, in five replications and in a randomized block design, consisted of: 1) disk plow (twice) + disk harrow + ridge-furrow tillage (raising a ridge along the planting row), 135 days after transplanting (DP + RID); 2) disk plow (twice) + disk harrow (DP no RID); 3) subsoiler (SB); 4) disk plow (twice) + disk harrow + scarification with three shanks along the plant row (DP + SPR); and 5) disk plow (twice) + disk harrow + scarification with three shanks in the total area (DP + STA). In all tillage systems, furrows were mechanically opened for the papaya plants. After the treatments, the mechanical resistance to penetration was determined, followed by soil moisture, mean weight diameter (MWD), geometric mean diameter (GMD), bulk density (BD), macroporosity (Ma), microporosity (Mi), and number of fruits per plant. There were differences in penetration resistance (PR) between treatments. The subsoiler was more effective to decrease RP to a distance of 0.35 m from the plants, perpendicular to the plant row. The scarifier resulted in a lower PR than DP or SB, even at the depth of 0.40 m, and it was more effective at greater distances perpendicular to the plant. All tillage systems induced a PR between 2.0 and 3.0 MPa at the depth with the highest concentration of papaya tree roots (0-0.25 m), improving the physical conditions to this depth. There was no statistical difference among the treatments for BD, Ma, Mi, MWD, and GMD at a depth of 0.20 m. The disk plow changed the physical properties of the soil most intensely to a depth of 0.20 m. The use of scarification, reduced tillage with a forest subsoiler, or ridge-furrow tillage did not improve the physical properties in the rhizosphere. Reduced tillage with a forest subsoiler resulted in a lower number of fruits per plant than all other treatments, which did not differ from each other.

Dentre as novas tecnologias, a fitorremediação é opção para a descontaminação de áreas que receberam intensas aplicações de herbicidas. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de selecionar espécies com potencial para a fitorremediação de solos contaminados com o herbicida sulfentrazone. As espécies testadas foram: Calopogonium mucunoides, híbrido de sorgo (Sorghum bicolor x Sorghum sudanense), Crotalaria breviflora, Crotalaria juncea, Canavalia ensiformis, Dolichos lablab, Stizolobium deeringianum e Stizolobium aterrimum, cultivadas em cinco doses do sulfentrazone (0, 200, 400, 800 e 1.600 g ha-1). O experimento foi instalado em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se vasos com capacidade para 6 L, preenchidos com amostras de solo coletadas na profundidade de 0-20 cm. Foram avaliadas a fitotoxicidade do herbicida, a altura de plantas e a massa de matéria seca da parte aérea e de raízes. As espécies que manifestaram os menores sintomas de fitotoxicidade e os maiores índices de altura e matéria fresca e seca foram C. juncea, C. ensiformis e D. lablab, sendo selecionadas como tolerantes ao herbicida sulfentrazone e com potencial para fitorremediação.Among the new technologies, phytoremediation is considered as an option for the decontamination of areas that thave undergone intense herbicide applications. This work aimed to select species with potential to the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with the herbicide sulfentrazone. The tested species were Calopogonium mucunoides, hybrid Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor x Sorghum sudanense), Crotalaria breviflora, Crotalaria juncea, Canavalia ensiformis, Dolichos lablab, Stizolobium deeringianum e Stizolobium aterrimum. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using 6 dm³ vases filled with soil samples collected at a depth of 20 cm. The experimental design was the randomized blocks in a factorial scheme of 8 x 5, with four repetitions, which were composed by the eight plant species, and five doses of sulfentrazone (0, 200, 400, 800 and 1,600g ha-1). We evaluated the phytotoxicity of the herbicide, plant height and dry weight of shoots and roots. The species showing the least symptoms of phytotoxicity and the highest rates of height and fresh and dry biomass were C. juncea, C. ensiformis and D. lablab, which were selected as tolerant to the herbicide sulfentrazone and with potential for phytoremediation.

Extreme temperatures and persistent water stress stand out among the main factors that restrict the vegetative growth and productivity of Coffea canephora. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vegetative growth of orthotropic and plagiotropic branches of C. canephora under non-irrigated and irrigated conditions, and their correlation with climatic factors in the Atlantic region of Bahia State, Brazil. The experiment was established with two treatments (non-irrigated and irrigated) in a completely random design with 14 replicates. One orthotropic and four plagiotropic branches were labelled on each plant. During the two-year experimental period, the growth of these branches was evaluated at 14-day intervals. Two harvests were performed to obtain productivity data. In summary, it was confirmed that irrigation resulted in an increased productivity of Conilon coffee in the Atlantic region of Bahia, Brazil. The growth rate of the orthotropic and plagiotropic branches was higher in irrigated plants. The growth rate of the plagiotropic branches was limited by the fruit load capacity. The growth rate of C. canephora branches was not limited by the minimum average air temperature in the Atlantic region of Bahia, Brazil.

Objetivou-se estimar a erosividade da chuva, mediante seis modelos matemáticos, de regressão linear avaliando entre estes, qual é mais indicado para as condições climáticas da região de São Mateus-ES. Os dados pluviométricos foram obtidos junto à Agência Nacional das Águas-ANA, sendo de 1947 a 2014 para Itauninhas, de 1971 a 2014 para Barra Nova, de 1981 a 2014 para São João da Cachoeira Grande e de 1993 a 2014 para Boca da Vala. Para estimar a erosividade da chuva, a partir da precipitação anual e do coeficiente de chuva, foram utilizadas diferentes equações utilizadas em outros estados com aplicação ao estado do Espírito Santo ou ajustadas para o próprio estado. Para os modelos matemáticos (II) e (I), os valores médios foram de 6.541,2 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 a 936,357 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 (Itauninhas), de 6.995,855 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 a 1.420,296 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 (Barra Nova), de 6.297,272 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 a 1.014,815 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 (São João da Cachoeira Grande) e de 5.427,659 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 a 1.626,489 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 ano-1 (Boca da Vala). Para os municípios de Barra Nova e Boca da Vala a erosividade da chuva foi estimada pela equação EI30 = 6,4492*pi – 391,63 com distribuição leptocúrtica. Para as outras duas localidades, a distribuição foi platicúrtica. A estação climatológica com o maior valor de erosividade média da chuva foi Barra Nova, enquanto Boca da Vala apresentou a menor erosividade, considerando apenas a estimativa da erosividade da chuva pelo modelo matemático II. Os maiores e menores valores de erosividade da chuva foram obtidos com os modelos matemáticos I e II. Para estimar a erosividade da chuva, nas condições climáticos da região de São Mateus-ES, o modelo matemático mais adequado é o II. Evaluation of mathematical models to estimate rainfall erosivity in the region of São Mateus-ES Abstract: This study aimed to estimate the rainfall erosivity by six mathematical models, linear regression, and evaluate these, which is more suitable for the climatic conditions of São Mateus-ES region. The rainfall data were obtained from the National Water Agency-ANA, and 1947-2014 for Itauninhas, 1971-2014 to Barra Nova, 1981-2014 for São João da Cachoeira Grande and 1993-2014 for Boca da Vala. To estimate the rainfall erosivity, from the annual precipitation and rainfall coefficient were used different equations used in other states with application to the state of the Holy Spirit or adjusted to the state itself. For mathematical models (II) and (I), the average values were 6541.2 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 to 936.357 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 (Itauninhas) of 6995.855 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1 to 1420.296 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 (Barra nova), to 6297.272 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 and 1014.815 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1 (São João da Cachoeira Grande) and 5427.659 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 to 1626.489 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 (Boca da Vala). For the municipalities of Barra Nova and Boca da Vala the rainfall erosivity was estimated by EI30 = 6.4492*pi - 391.63 with leptokurtic distribution. For the other two locations, the distribution was platykurtic. The climatological station with the highest amount of average rainfall erosivity was Barra Nova, while Boca da Vala had the lowest erosivity, considering only an estimated rainfall erosivity by the mathematical model II. The highest and lowest values erosivity of the rain were obtained with the mathematical models I and II. To estimate the rainfall erosivity in the climatic conditions of São Mateus-ES region, the most suitable mathematical model is II.

Estudos que visem elucidar a variação espacial de atributos de solo associada à resposta de produção das lavouras podem contribuir para a aplicação racional de insumos, possibilitando ganhos econômicos e ambientais. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a variabilidade espacial dos micronutrientes Fe, Cu, Zn e Mn e da matéria orgânica, bem como sua correlação espacial com a produtividade de uma lavoura de pimenta-do-reino cultivada em um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico. O estudo foi realizado em uma lavoura comercial de pimenta-do-reino da variedade Bragantina, em regime de irrigação por microaspersão, no município de São Mateus-ES. A área experimental possui dimensões de 100 x 120 m, onde se amostrou uma malha de 126 pontos com distância mínima de 5 m entre eles. Em cada ponto amostral foram coletadas três subamostras de solo na projeção da copa da pimenteira-do-reino, compondo uma amostra, na profundidade de 0-20 cm. A produtividade da lavoura foi estimada por meio da colheita das três plantas circunvizinhas a cada ponto amostral. Os atributos estudados apresentaram estrutura de dependência espacial forte e moderada, sendo o modelo esférico o que melhor se ajustou para todas as variáveis avaliadas. Verificou-se correlação espacial negativa para o teor de Fe e positiva para os teores de Zn, Mn e matéria orgânica do solo com a produtividade da pimenta-do-reino.

The Brazilian coffee planting presents a great importance in the creation of job opportunities, resources, and exchange value, being very diversified, with local particularities. The Brazilian Savannah covers more than 200 million ha, distributed along the States of Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Tocantins, Bahia, Piauí, Maranhão, and Distrito Federal, and has reached a yield of more than 5 million bags per year, mainly for Coffea arabica L. The coffee growing, in that region, stands out for presenting yield above the national average and for using, in a more efficient way, agricultural inputs, irrigation, improved varieties, and mechanization, among other practices. The irrigated coffee crop, in Brazil, covers 240,000 ha, most of these in the Brazilian Savannah, representing 10% of the total planted area and 25% of the total coffee yield. The most used irrigation systems are the sprinkler ones (conventional, net sprinkler, and center pivot) and the located ones (dripping and modified). Its climate favours coffee quality, as it allows harvesting under low air humidity conditions, since rainfall is concentrated in the summer. It is also observed, in the Brazilian Savannah areas, higher insolation rates, mainly in the autumn and winter months, favorable to yield and quality. The most planted varieties are the Catuaí and Mundo Novo ones, along with other promising drought and diseases resistant materials.

This paper aimed to select species with potential for phytoremediation of soils contaminated with the herbicide sulfentrazone. Eight species were evaluated: Arachis pintoi, Eleusine coracana, Crotalaria spectabilis, Crotalaria ochroleuca, Cajanus cajan, Leucaena leucocephala, Stizolobium cinereum, and Raphanus sativus. The experiment was set-up inside a greenhouse, using pots with a capacity of 6dm3 filled with soil samples collected at a depth of 0-20cm. The experimental design was arranged into randomised blocks in a factorial scheme (8 × 5) with four replications, which consisted of the combination between the species and five doses of sulfentrazone (0, 200, 400, 800, and 1,600g ha-1). The herbicide phytotoxicity, plant heights, and dry masses of shoots and roots were evaluated. The species Cajanus cajan and Leucaena leucocephala had a higher tolerance to sulfentrazone up to a dose of 400g ha-1, showing minor symptoms of phytotoxicity and smaller decreases in plant heights and in dry matter accumulation, both in the shoots and roots, when compared to the control treatment, indicating, thus, the potential to be used for further studies on phytoremediation of sulfentrazone in soil. Este trabalho teve como objetivo selecionar espécies com potencial para a fitorremediação de solos contaminados com o herbicida sulfentrazone. Foram avaliadas oito espécies: Arachis pintoi, Eleusine coracana, Crotalaria spectabilis, Crotalaria ochroleuca, Cajanus cajan, Leucaena leucocephala, Stizolobium cinereum e Raphanus sativus. O experimento foi instalado em casa de vegetação, com a utilização de vasos com capacidade para 6 dm3 preenchidos com porções de solo coletadas na profundidade de 0-20 cm. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 8 × 5, com quatro repetições, composto pela combinação entre as espécies e cinco doses do sulfentrazone (0, 200, 400, 800 e 1.600 g ha-1). Foram avaliadas a fitotoxicidade do herbicida, a altura de plantas e a massa da matéria seca da parte aérea e de raízes. As espécies Cajanus cajan e Leucaena leucocephala apresentaram maior tolerância ao sulfentrazone até a dose de 400 g ha-1, mostrando menores sintomas de fitotoxicidade e menores reduções na altura de plantas e no acúmulo de matéria seca, tanto na parte aérea como nas raízes, em relação ao tratamento controle, indicando, com isso, potencial de utilização para posteriores estudos de fitorremediação de sulfentrazone em solo.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo apresentar um zoneamento de risco climático, baseado no atendimento hídrico para o café Conilon para o estado do Espírito Santo, em função da variação das necessidades de água nas fases fenológicas do florescimento, granação dos frutos e crescimento vegetativo. Foi realizada para cada fase fenológica uma análise frequencial da evapotranspiração relativa, obtida pela relação entre as evapotranspirações real e de referência, provenientes de um modelo de balanço hídrico sequencial. Posteriormente procedeu-se a espacialização de riscos climáticos de atendimento hídrico para o café Conilon considerando simultaneamente as fases fenológicas da floração, granação e crescimento vegetativo. Os resultados indicaram que devido à característica heterogênea do regime pluviométrico, associada às diferentes demandas hídricas, ocorre uma variação espacial do risco climático ao atendimento hídrico no Estado e que a partir da análise simultânea de atendimento hídrico nas diferentes fases fenológicas do café Conilon, identificou-se que 58% da área do Espírito Santo, concentrada principalmente na região norte, apresenta alto risco climático nas fases vegetativa do florescimento, granação e crescimento vegetativo.A frequencial analysis of the crop water requirement index of the Conilon coffee (Coffea canephora), determined for the occurrence of relative evapotranspiration (ETr/ETo) > 0.65 above 80% of the years, was carried through for the phenological stages of the flowering, bean formation and vegetative growth. The areas with climatic risk of water deficit were zoned by a geographic information system considering simultaneously the three phenological stages. The results showed that due to heterogeneous rain characteristics, associate to the different water requirements, occurs a space variation of the climatic risk to the water required in the State. In analysis of water required in the different phonological stages of the Conilon coffee, it was identified that 58% of the area of the state of Espirito Santo, mainly in the north part, presents high climatic risk of water required in the phases of the flowering, bean formation and vegetative growth.

The aim of this work was to evaluate irrigation effects on the productivity and income of coffee cultivars (Catuaí IAC 44, Acaiá Cerrado MG 1474, Rubi MG 1192, Topázio MG 1190, Oeiras MG 6851, and Katipó), in order to identify the potentiality for the irrigated coffee production in the Cerrado area, in the southwest region of the Goiás State. The coffee cultivars, planted with 3.50 m between rows, and 0.50 m between plants in the row, were evaluated without irrigation and irrigated with sprinkling and drip systems. The trial was conducted, from 2002 to 2006, at the Universidade Federal de Goiás, Jataí Campus, in the Goiás State, concentrating irrigation from May to September. The irrigation water management was controlled through soil water balance. The irrigation process doubled the productivity and decreased the processing yield rate, while no significant difference was found among the irrigation methods. The Katipó cultivar showed a significantly higher productivity rate, with a good potential to be cultivated on the region and no influence of the water supply system, i.e., without irrigation, sprinkle irrigation, or drip irrigation. The cultivar Acaiá Cerrado MG 1474 featured the lowest productivity rate. KEY-WORDS: Coffea arabica; irrigated coffee; drip irrigation; sprinkle irrigation. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da irrigação na produtividade e renda das cultivares de cafeeiro Catuaí IAC 44, Acaiá Cerrado MG 1474, Rubi MG 1192, Topázio MG 1190, Oeiras MG 6851 e Katipó, com a finalidade de se identificar a potencialidade da produção de café arábica, nas condições de Cerrado, no sudoeste goiano (17º52'S, 51º42'W e altitude de 696 m). As cultivares de cafeeiro, plantadas no espaçamento de 3,50 m x 0,50 m, foram avaliadas em condições não irrigadas e irrigadas por aspersão, ou gotejamento. O experimento foi conduzido no período de 2002 a 2006, na Universidade Federal de Goiás, Campus de Jataí, Goiás, com as irrigações concentradas no período de maio a setembro. O manejo de água na irrigação foi feito por meio de balanço de água no solo. A irrigação dobrou a produtividade dos cafeeiros e reduziu a renda no beneficiamento do café, não sendo observadas diferenças significativas entre os métodos de irrigação empregados. A cultivar Katipó apresentou produtividade significativamente superior às demais, mostrando-se promissora para o cultivo na região, independentemente do regime de suprimento de água, ou seja, não irrigado, irrigado por aspersão, ou irrigado por gotejamento. A cultivar Acaiá Cerrado MG 1474 foi a que apresentou menor produtividade.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Coffea arabica; cafeicultura irrigada; gotejamento; aspersão.

A pimenta é uma olerícola importante na agricultura brasileira, tendo em vista o seu vasto uso culinário. Para que a cultura estudada se desenvolva satisfatoriamente é necessário o manejo adequado da irrigação. Com base na importância dessa cultura, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de lâminas de irrigação nos componentes de produção de duas espécies de pimenta do gênero Capsicum. O experimento foi desenvolvido em condições de campo, na fazenda do CEUNES/UFES, em São Mateus, no Espírito Santo, Brasil. Empregou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos inteiramente casualizados, em parcela subdividida, com quatro repetições. As parcelas consistiram de cinco lâminas de irrigação, correspondendo a 40%, 70%, 100%, 130%, 160% da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo) de Penman Monteith (FAO 56). Nas subparcelas foram avaliadas duas espécies de pimenta, sendo: Capsicum baccatum, da variedade Dedo-de-Moça, e a Capsicum chinense, da variedade De Cheiro. Avaliou-se a produtividade, a massa média, o diâmetro médio, bem como o comprimento dos frutos. As lâminas de irrigação apresentaram efeitos apenas para a produtividade e para a massa média dos frutos de pimenteira. Os componentes de produção da pimenta de ‘De Cheiro’ foram superiores aos do ‘Dedo-de-Moça’, para as condições edafoclimáticas de São Mateus-ES.

ABSTRACT Knowledge of the wet bulb and the root system of the Conilon coffee plant is highly important for the correct management of irrigation. Therefore, the aim of this work was to characterize the wet bulb and Conilon coffee root distribution under drip irrigation. The experiment was conducted in the city of São Mateus, ES, Brazil with five replications of a completely randomized design of a 4 x 6 split-plot scheme, which represents four points located according to plant location and six depths. Two points were located in the plant line and two points between lines. For row spacing, we used a split-plot scheme 5 x 6 with five points in relation with plant location and six depths with five replications. The coffee roots were analysed by volume, superficial area, length and diameter. The wet bulb was measured with tubes located in six points near the plants with two points in the plant row (between two plants) and five points between rows. The measurements were conducted at four depth ranges with three replications. The wet bulb reached a depth of between 0.40 and 0.50 m, providing an excess of water in depth, evidencing the importance of this characterization for the irrigation management of drip-irrigated Conilon coffee. The depth of the radicular system for better irrigation management efficiency of drip-irrigated coffee is 0.30 m, exhibiting 67.4% of root volume and 68.0% of surface area.

RESUMO Existem poucas informações quanto à fitorremediação do herbicida sulfentrazone, reforçando assim a necessidade de pesquisas que visam oferecer alternativas seguras para sua utilização em sistemas que integram a sucessão/rotação de culturas, focando a sustentabilidade da produção agrícola, sem prejuízos ao sistema produtivo e ao ambiente. Com isso, objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a influência da densidade populacional de Canavalia ensiformis sobre a fitorremediação de solo contaminado com o herbicida sulfentrazone. O experimento constou de um fatorial 4 x 3, no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. O primeiro fator foi constituído pela combinação de quatro densidades populacionais da espécie fitorremediadora C. ensiformis (0; 10; 20 e 40 plantas m-2) e o segundo por três doses do herbicida sulfentrazone (0; 200 e 400 g ha-1). Aos 75 dias após a emergência, as plantas foram cortadas na altura do coleto. Nesse mesmo período, efetuou-se, no próprio vaso, a semeadura da espécie bioindicadora da presença do sulfentrazone, milheto (Pennisetum glaucum), na qual foram avaliadas a fitotoxicidade, a altura e a biomassa fresca e seca da parte aérea e da raiz. O cultivo prévio da espécie fitorremediadora C. ensiformis promoveu a remediação do solo contaminado com sulfentrazone. A densidade populacional mínima de C. ensiformis que possibilita o desenvolvimento do milheto é de 10 plantas m-2. Todavia, melhores resultados foram obtidos na densidade de 40 plantas m-2.
