Abstract

Prior work shows that gift recipients are surprisingly insensitive to the amount of money givers spend, even though more expensive gifts represent a greater investment by givers and impart greater value to recipients. We suggest that recipients' apparent indifference may be explained by competing reactions to gift expenditure. Specifically, we propose that recipients are not unresponsive to gift expenditure, per se, but that money's association with instrumentality means that conspicuous monetary expenditures can cause recipients to contemplate givers' instrumental motives (i.e., become suspicious). Four studies show that large gift expenditures can cause recipients to become suspicious of givers' motives and that suspicion undermines recipients' otherwise positive reactions. We further show that expenditures that are less strongly associated with instrumentality (time and effort) and gifts that have a weaker association with money and instrumentality (experiential gifts) are less prone to suspicion and are appreciated more. 3. Increasing Organ Donor Registrations with Behavioral Interventions: A Field Experiment.

Abstract

Although prior research has advanced our understanding of the drivers of organ donation attitudes and intentions, little is known about how to increase actual registrations within explicit consent systems. Some empirical evidence suggests that costly, labor-intensive educational programs and mass-media campaigns might increase registrations; however, they are neither scalable nor economical solutions. To address these limitations, the authors conducted a field experiment (N = 3,330) in Ontario, Canada, testing the effectiveness of behaviorally informed promotion interventions as well as process improvements. They find that intercepting customers with materials targeting information and altruistic motives at the right time, along with streamlining customer service, significantly increased registrations. Specifically, the best-performing intervention, prompting perspective taking through reciprocal altruism ("If you needed a transplant would you have one?"), significantly increased new registration rates from 4.1% in the control condition to 7.4%. The authors followed up with seven posttests (total N = 3,376) to find support for their theoretical predictions and to explore the mechanisms through which the interventions may have operated. This article provides evidence for low-cost, scalable marketing solutions that increase organ donor registrations in a prompted choice context and has important implications for public policy and societal welfare. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine whether sensitizing people to their pain (through an affective pain prime) is qualitatively different from inducing sadness (through mood induction) and will lead to different effects on experienced sadness and participant’s subsequent willingness to pay. Previous research has found that inducing sadness, using a mood induction task (video + self-focused writing exercise), led to a positive effect on willingness to pay (WTP): the sadder participants the higher their WTP (Cryder et al. 2008). In our previous study (Exp 2, Mazar et al.) we conceptually primed affective pain through a scrambled-sentences task that included words related to sadness (i.e., social exclusion and heartbreak). We found the opposite pattern of results on WTP than Cryder et al. (2008): In a subsequent purchasing task, people conceptually primed with affective pain words had a significantly lower WTP for a product than those in a control group. We found no effects of our conceptual priming task on participants’ “current” aggregated mood and arousal. These results suggest that our priming task made participants more sensitive to affective pain (e.g., their pain of paying) rather than feeling actual pain and thus reduced their WTP. In this study, we will directly test our conceptual affective pain priming manipulation against the sadness mood induction task using manipulation checks from Dorison et al. (PNAS 2020) to replicate our previous findings and support the notion that feeling sad has not the same impact on purchasing behavior as conceptually priming people using our affective pain manipulation.

Le gène de 1'apolipoprotéine E qui est polymorphique, est directement impliqué dans la régulation du métabolisme des lipides. La fréquence de ses trois allèles a été mesurée dans plusieurs populations et différentes études ont montré que le polymorphisme de l'apo E exerçait une influence sur les concentrations de lipides, de lipoprotéines et d'apolipoprotéines dans les populations, l'allèle £2 ayant pour effet d'abaisser les niveaux de cholestérol total (Chol) et de cholestérol associé aux lipoprotéines de faible densité (LDLC), tandis que l'allèle £4 exerce un effet contraire. Vu l'importance de cet effet sur les niveaux lipidiques, l'hypothèse a été émise que la variation génétique au sein des apolipoprotéines pouvait être un déterminant majeur du risque de MCV. Dans le but de déterminer les effets du polymorphisme de l'apolipoprotéine E (apo E) sur le profil lipidique de la population du Lac St-Jean-Chibougamau, les phénotypes de l'apo E ainsi que les concentrations plasmatiques de cholestérol total (Chol), de cholestérol associé aux lipoprotéines de faible densité (LDL-C) et de haute densité (HDL-C) et de triglycérides (TG) ont été déterminés chez 435 personnes âgées de 18 à 74 ans. Les fréquences des allèles £2, £3 et £4 dans cette population, ont été estimées à 0.137, 0.749 et 0.1-14, respectivement. Pour les fins de l'analyse, l'échantillon a été subdivisé en trois sous-groupes: les hommes, les femmes pré-ménopausées et les femmes ménopausées. Après ajustement des données pour les effets de l'âge, du poids, de la taille, du ratio taille/hanche (WHR) et de l'indice de masse corporelle (BMI) dans chacun des sous-groupes, l'ANOVA a permis de mettre en évidence des différences significatives entre les groupes phénotypiques Apo E2 (E2/E2 et E3/E2), Apo E3 (E3/E3) et Apo E4 (E4/E3 et E4/E4) pour toutes les variables lipidiques chez les hommes et pour le CHOL et le LDL-C chez les femmes. 22. Increasing Timely Tax Payment with Implementation Intentions: A Field Experiment.

Abstract

The authors report a large-scale field experiment designed to increase tax filing behavior among late-filing organizations. Applying a novel theoretical perspective to the tax collection literature, the experiment tests the effects of instilling delinquent organizations with implementation intentions by providing them with a tax payment plan. At no additional cost to the government, this experiment caused subject organizations to remit tens of millions of additional tax dollars within a month and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in collection costs. These results suggest that tax payment procrastination may be explained not by a lack of motivations to pay, but rather the absence of a plan that facilitates putting those motivations into action. The results also clearly demonstrate the value of applying insights from the academic literature to governance and its financing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
