Vascular PET grafts (Dacron) have shown good performance in large vessels (≥6mm) applications. To address the urgent unmet need for small-diameter (2–6mm) vascular grafts, proprietary high-compliance nonwoven PET fiber structures were modified with various PEG concentrations using PVA as a cross-linking agent, to fabricate non-thrombogenicmechanically compliant vascular grafts. The blood compatibility assays measured through platelet adhesion (SEM and mepacrine dye) and platelet activation (morphological changes, P-selectin secretion, and TXB2 production) demonstrate that functionalization using a 10% PEG solution was sufficient to significantly reduce platelet adhesion/activation close to optimal literature-reported levels observed on carbon-coated ePTFE.

Synthetic grafts from woven polyethylene terephthalate fibers or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene have been used for decades to replace diseased arteries. However, their thrombogenicity and low compliance (vs. arteries) inevitably lead to their occlusion. A need exists for new synthetic grafts with an anti-thrombogenic surface and high compliance to improve long-term patency. grafts from nonwoven PET fiber structures obtained from melt blowing are evaluated. Contrary to commercial woven Dacron™, they allow for mechanical compliance adjustment through control of fiber diameter, porosity and graft structure configuration. Their low thrombogenicity, when properly surface-treated using polyethylene glycol functionalization, artery-matching compliance and promising burst pressure are reported., Antec 2009, June 22-24, 2009, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Conductive micro and nanofibers have been produced by melt-spinning and electrospinning. Melt-spinning uses mechanical forces to stretch fibers while electrospinning allows the production of fibers using the force of an electric field to stretch them. Alternatively, textile multifilament fibers were coated with intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs).
