2. Transforming Information Literacy Conversations to Enhance Student Learning: New Curriculum Dialogues

Abstract

Information literacy is an essential component of the La Trobe University inquiry/research graduate capability and it provides the skill set needed for students to take their first steps on the path to engaging with academic information and scholarly communication processes. A deep learning approach to information literacy can be achieved if students have an opportunity to build awareness of generic skills followed by practice in their discipline context. This article describes a collaborative model for developing and embedding information literacy resources within disciplines, that is based on Biggs and Tang's (2007) concept of constructive alignment, and that is suitable for implementation on an institutional scale. The article explores the application of the model through interviews with academics and concludes by providing a set of reflections on the importance of librarians taking an educationally theorised approach to both teaching and learning conversations related to information literacy and to the development of curriculum resources. All of which, need to be focused on collecting evidence of student learning outcomes. (Contains 1 table, 2 figures, and 6 footnotes.)

Abstract

La Trobe University Library has embarked on an institution-wide project with the objective of enabling students to engage with scholarly and credible information from the first year. This initiative by the library is in response to La Trobe curriculum reform. In particular, it aligns information literacy with the inquiry/research graduate capability at an institutional level. Outcomes of the project have resulted in a new La Trobe model for embedding information literacy, a toolkit, and significant changes in practice in areas of the curriculum where inquiry/research is mapped. As a result academic staff have noted improved student performance and academic research readiness.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify likely pathogenic (LP) and pathogenic (P) genetic results for autism that can be returned to participants in SPARK (SPARKforAutism.org): a large recontactable cohort of people with autism in the United States. We also describe the process to return these clinically confirmed genetic findings.

Abstract

The surface activities of lysozyme and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicles at aqueous/compressed fluid interfaces are examined through high-pressure interfacial tension measurements using the pendant drop technique. The surface pressures infer pressure-dependent morphological changes within the DPPC monolayer.

Abstract

Information literacy is an essential component of the La Trobe University inquiry/research graduate capability and it provides the skill set needed for students to take their first steps on the path to engaging with academic information and scholarly communication processes. A deep learning approach to information literacy can be achieved if students have an opportunity to build awareness of generic skills followed by practice in their discipline context. This article describes a collaborative model for developing and embedding information literacy resources within disciplines, that is based on Biggs and Tang's (2007) concept of constructive alignment, and that is suitable for implementation on an institutional scale. The article explores the application of the model through interviews with academics and concludes by providing a set of reflections on the importance of librarians taking an educationally theorised approach to both teaching and learning conversations related to information literacy and to the development of curriculum resources. All of which, need to be focused on collecting evidence of student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Introduction: The use of NPWT and eHAM can aid in the closure of chronic wounds with exposed bone and tendon., Objective: The authors examined the time to skin grafting and wound closure in 10 patients after treatment with either NPWT with eHAM (group 1, n = 5) or NPWT without eHAM (group 2, n = 5)., Results: The average time to closure was similar between group 1 and group 2 (15.2 weeks vs 14.6 weeks) despite a nearly twofold greater initial wound area. However, the rate of wound closure per week was better in group 1 than in group 2 in terms of both area (9.0 cm2 vs 6.8 cm2) and volume (12.3 cm3 vs 5.4 cm3). In addition, the rate of wound closure per week at skin grafting was better in group 1 than group 2 in terms of both area (4.5 cm2 vs 3.8 cm2) and volume (25.9 cm3 vs 4.1 cm3). All patients in group 1 received skin grafts within 2 to 3 weeks after their second eHAM application., Conclusion: The results of this small case series suggest that eHAM has a synergistic effect when used in combination with NPWT for the treatment of chronic wounds with exposed bone and tendon.
