Abstract

We have developed a new all-optical method to directly measure the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) equation of state (EOS) of fluids and transparent solids in the diamond anvil high pressure cell by measuring the volume of the sample chamber. Our method combines confocal microscopy and white light interference with a new analysis method which exploits the mutual dependence of sample density and refractive index: Experimentally, the refractive index determines the measured sample chamber thickness (and therefore the measured sample volume/density), yet the sample density is by far the dominant factor in determining the variation in refractive index with pressure. Our analysis method allows us to obtain a set of values for the density and refractive index which are mutually consistent, and agree with the experimental data within error. We have conducted proof-of-concept experiments on a variety of samples (H$_{2}$O, CH$_{4}$, C$_{2}$H$_{6}$, C$_{3}$H$_{8}$, KCl and NaCl) at ambient temperature, and at high temperatures up to just above 500 K. Our proof-of-concept data demonstrate that our method is able to reproduce known fluid and solid EOS within error. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our method allows us to directly and routinely measure the PVT EOS of simple fluids at GPa pressures up to, at least, 514 K (the highest temperature reached in our study). A reasonable estimation of the known sources of error in our volume determinations indicates that the error is currently $\pm$ 2.7% at high temperature, and that it is feasible to reduce it to ca. $\pm$ 1% in future work., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics of Fluids

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

5. "Turning up the heat": role of neurotrophic batokines in the postnatal maturation and remodeling of brown adipose tissue in deer mice.

Abstract

Activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis impacts energy balance and must be tightly regulated. Several neurotrophic factors, expressed in BAT of adult laboratory rodents, have been implicated in remodeling the sympathetic neural network to enhance thermogenesis [e.g., nerve growth factor (NGF), neuregulin-4 (NRG4), and S100b]. Here, we compare, to our knowledge, for the first time, the relative roles of three neurotrophic "batokines" in establishing/remodeling innervation during postnatal development and adult cold stress. We used laboratory-reared Peromyscus maniculatus, which rely heavily on BAT-based thermogenesis for survival in the wild, beginning between postnatal days (P) 8 and 10. BAT sympathetic innervation was enhanced from P6 to P10, and exogenous NGF, NRG4, and S100b stimulated neurite outgrowth from P6 sympathetic neurons. Endogenous BAT protein stores and/or gene expression of NRG4, S100b, and calsyntenin-3β (which may regulate S100b secretion) remained high and constant during development. However, endogenous NGF was low and ngf mRNA was undetectable. Conditioned media (CM) from cultured P10 BAT slices stimulated neurite outgrowth from sympathetic neurons in vitro, which was inhibited by antibodies against all three growth factors. P10 CM had significant amounts of secreted NRG4 and S100b protein, but not NGF. By contrast, BAT slices from cold-acclimated adults released significant amounts of all three factors relative to thermoneutral controls. These data suggest that although neurotrophic batokines regulate sympathetic innervation in vivo, their relative contributions differ depending on the life stage. They also provide novel insights into the regulation of BAT remodeling and BAT's secretory role, both of which are critical to our understanding of mammalian energy homeostasis. Abstract

Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

The aesthetic response to music is the purest and highest kind of musical appreciation, In aesthetic listening the subject is absorbed in the music aesthetic enjoyment enriches the life and the capacity to experience of the individual . The qua. music, identifying himself with the developing system of musical relationships, 3 . Musical absorption tends to inhibit extra-musical experience. 4 Absorption or self-individuation in the music depends on the degree to which the musical system is grasped and followed. 5 Thus aesthetic listening has an intellectual basis. The subject grasps. follows and understands the relationships as regards pitch , rhythm amd the dynamic qualities . He may know these only intuitively, 6 , Progress from the lower levels of musical experience to the highest depends on the subject's musical recep tivity and t a s t e , and on how far these have been developed by training and/or experience, 7 Musical meaning is only definable in musical terms; and can only be understood by the subject who grasps the music as an organic whole. 6 , The associative features of music cannot be e ntirely discounted in musical listening . At the highest level t h e ir effect is at a minimum. 9 , The emotional element in aesthetic listening is bound up with the intellectual grasp of the musical system. Extramusical emotion may be aroused by extra-musical factors, either objectively present (e.g. a programme) or subjectively supplied. In aesthetic absorption such emotion, tends to be inhibited,, 10 Aesthetic emotion results from the subjective apprehension of a unique and significant musical whole, possessing beauty and value in the light of the subject's musical background, 11 , Aesthetic listening has no practical value, but conation enters the experience. Underlying interest in the music for itself is a certain exaltation due to self individuation, the power to predict, and the unconscious feeling of creator-ship,

Abstract

This paper describes the work in progress to develop a new ECG signal filtering technique to aid the clinical analysis of atrial fibrillation. The method separates the wavelet transform modulus maxima corresponding to the signal scalogram into a number of components. These groups of maxima lines are then used to reconstruct separate signals representing each of the features, including atrial fibrillation., Presented at the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (23rd) held in Istanbul, Turkey on 25-28 Oct 2001.
