Branching ratios, lepton forward-backward asymmetries, and lepton polarization asymmetries for the flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) dileptonic decays of the $\Lambda_b$ baryon to the ground state and a number of excited state $\Lambda$ baryons are calculated using form factors extracted using wave functions from a constituent quark model. The SM branching ratios for the transition to the ground state calculated using these quark model form factors are consistent with the recent measurement reported by the LHCb collaboration. It is shown that the lepton polarization asymmetries are largely insensitive to the transition form factors and, therefore, to the effects of QCD in the nonperturbative regime. These observables can therefore provide somewhat model independent ways of extracting various combinations of the Wilson coefficients., Comment: 44 pages, 34 figures, To be submitted to IJMPA. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1108.6129

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,Nuclear Experiment ,Physics - Accelerator Physics - Abstract
The Jefferson Lab Q_weak experiment determined the weak charge of the proton by measuring the parity-violating elastic scattering asymmetry of longitudinally polarized electrons from an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target at small momentum transfer. A custom apparatus was designed for this experiment to meet the technical challenges presented by the smallest and most precise ${\vec{e}}$p asymmetry ever measured. Technical milestones were achieved at Jefferson Lab in target power, beam current, beam helicity reversal rate, polarimetry, detected rates, and control of helicity-correlated beam properties. The experiment employed 180 microA of 89% longitudinally polarized electrons whose helicity was reversed 960 times per second. The electrons were accelerated to 1.16 GeV and directed to a beamline with extensive instrumentation to measure helicity-correlated beam properties that can induce false asymmetries. Moller and Compton polarimetry were used to measure the electron beam polarization to better than 1%. The electron beam was incident on a 34.4 cm liquid hydrogen target. After passing through a triple collimator system, scattered electrons between 5.8 degrees and 11.6 degrees were bent in the toroidal magnetic field of a resistive copper-coil magnet. The electrons inside this acceptance were focused onto eight fused silica Cerenkov detectors arrayed symmetrically around the beam axis. A total scattered electron rate of about 7 GHz was incident on the detector array. The detectors were read out in integrating mode by custom-built low-noise pre-amplifiers and 18-bit sampling ADC modules. The momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.025 GeV^2 was determined using dedicated low-current (~100 pA) measurements with a set of drift chambers before (and a set of drift chambers and trigger scintillation counters after) the toroidal magnet., Comment: 48 pages, 36 figures. - Abstract
Aim: Intraperitoneal drains are often placed during emergency colorectal surgery. However, there is a lack of evidence supporting their use. This study aimed to describe the efficacy and safety of intraperitoneal drain placement after emergency colorectal surgery. Method: COMPlicAted intra-abdominal collectionS after colorectal Surgery (COMPASS) is a prospective, international, cohort study into which consecutive adult patients undergoing emergency colorectal surgery were enrolled (from 3 February 2020 to 8 March 2020). The primary outcome was the rate of intraperitoneal drain placement. Secondary outcomes included rate and time-to-diagnosis of postoperative intraperitoneal collections, rate of surgical site infections (SSIs), time to discharge and 30-day major postoperative complications (Clavien–Dindo III–V). Multivariable logistic and Cox proportional hazards regressions were used to estimate the independent association of the outcomes with drain placement. Results: Some 725 patients (median age 68.0 years; 349 [48.1%] women) from 22 countries were included. The drain insertion rate was 53.7% (389 patients). Following multivariable adjustment, drains were not significantly associated with reduced rates (odds ratio [OR] = 1.56, 95% CI: 0.48–5.02, p = 0.457) or earlier detection (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.07, 95% CI: 0.61–1.90, p = 0.805) of collections. Drains were not significantly associated with worse major postoperative complications (OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 0.67–2.36, p = 0.478), delayed hospital discharge (HR = 1.11, 95% CI: 0.91–1.36, p = 0.303) or increased risk of SSIs (OR = 1.61, 95% CI: 0.87–2.99, p = 0.128). Conclusion: This is the first study investigating placement of intraperitoneal drains following emergency colorectal surgery. The safety and clinical benefit of drains remain uncertain. Equipoise exists for randomized trials to define the safety and efficacy of drains in emergency colorectal surgery.

- Abstract
The Terabyte Infrared Delivery (TBIRD) program will establish an optical communication link from a 6U CubeSat in low-Earth orbit (LEO) to a ground station at burst rates up to 200 Gbps, resulting in data volumes that can exceed 1 Terabyte in a single pass. The space and ground terminals utilize commercially available 1550-nm coherent transceivers in conjunction with an automatic repeat request (ARQ) system to guarantee robust communication in the presence of an atmospheric fading channel. This allows the system to perform a reliable end-toend transfer of data from the payload’s 2-TB storage buffer to the ground terminal. In this paper, we describe the system architecture, link analysis, and concept of operations for the upcoming TBIRD flight demonstration in 2022. We also provide an update on the development of the 3U terminal payload and the ground terminal at JPL’s Optical Communications Telescope Laboratory (OCTL).

Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence - Abstract
During the summer of 1989, the Forecast Systems Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sponsored an evaluation of artificial intelligence-based systems that forecast severe convective storms. The evaluation experiment, called Shootout-89, took place in Boulder, and focussed on storms over the northeastern Colorado foothills and plains (Moninger, et al., 1990). Six systems participated in Shootout-89. These included traditional expert systems, an analogy-based system, and a system developed using methods from the cognitive science/judgment analysis tradition. Each day of the exercise, the systems generated 2 to 9 hour forecasts of the probabilities of occurrence of: non significant weather, significant weather, and severe weather, in each of four regions in northeastern Colorado. A verification coordinator working at the Denver Weather Service Forecast Office gathered ground-truth data from a network of observers. Systems were evaluated on the basis of several measures of forecast skill, and on other metrics such as timeliness, ease of learning, and ease of use. Systems were generally easy to operate, however the various systems required substantially different levels of meteorological expertise on the part of their users--reflecting the various operational environments for which the systems had been designed. Systems varied in their statistical behavior, but on this difficult forecast problem, the systems generally showed a skill approximately equal to that of persistence forecasts and climatological (historical frequency) forecasts. The two systems that appeared best able to discriminate significant from non significant weather events were traditional expert systems. Both of these systems required the operator to make relatively sophisticated meteorological judgments. We are unable, based on only one summer's worth of data, to determine the extent to which the greater skill of the two systems was due to the content of their knowledge bases, or to the subjective judgments of the operator. A follow-on experiment, Shootout-91, is currently being planned. Interested potential participants are encouraged to contact the author at the address above., Comment: Appears in Proceedings of the Fifth Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI1989)

- Abstract
Early communication impairment is among the most-reported first concerns in parents of young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Using a parent-report questionnaire, we derived trajectory groups for early language and gesture acquisition in siblings at high risk for ASD and in children at low risk, during their first 2 years of life. Developmental skills at 6 months were associated with trajectory group membership representing growth in receptive language and gestures. Behavioral symptoms also predicted gesture development. All communication measures were strongly related to clinical and developmental outcomes. Trajectory groups further indicated slowest language/gesture acquisition in infants with later ASD diagnoses, in particular when associated with language delay. Overall, our results confirm considerable variability in communication development in high-risk infants.

Lepton polarization asymmetries for the flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) dileptonic decays of {\Lambda}b baryons are calculated using single-component analytic (SCA) and multicomponent numerical (MCN) form factors. We show that these polarization asymmetries are insensitive to the transition form factors and, thus, the effects of QCD in the nonperturbative regime. Therefore, these observables can provide somewhat model independent ways of extracting the Wilson coefficients., Comment: 3 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure, To appear in the proceedings for the Eleventh Conference on the Intersections of Particle and Nuclear Physics (CIPANP 2012)

The Heavy Diquark Symmetry (HDS) of Doubly Heavy Baryons (DHBs) provides new insights into the spectroscopy of these hadrons. We derive the consequences of this symmetry for the mass spectra and the decay widths of DHBs. We compare these symmetry constraints to results from a nonrelativistic quark model for the mass spectra and results from the $^3P_0$ model for strong decays. The quark model we implement was not constructed with these symmetries and contains interactions which explicitly break HDS. Nevertheless, these symmetries emerge. We argue that the $^3P_0$ model and any other model for strong transitions which employs a spectator assumption explicitly respects HDS. We also explore the possibility of treating the strange quark as a heavy quark and apply these ideas to $\Xi$, $\Xi_c$, and $\Xi_b$ baryons., Comment: 28 pages

We discuss the extension of the superflavor symmetry of doubly heavy baryons to states which contain an excited heavy diquark, and we examine some of the consequences of this symmetry for the spectra of doubly heavy baryons and heavy mesons. We explore the ramifications of a proposed symmetry that relates heavy diquarks to doubly heavy mesons. We present a method for determining how the excitation energy of a system containing two heavy quarks will scale as one changes the strength of the interactions and the reduced mass of the system. We use this to derive consequences of the heavy diquark-doubly heavy meson symmetry. We compare these consequences to the results of a quark model as well as the experimental data for doubly and singly heavy mesons. We also discuss the possibility of treating the strange quark as a heavy quark and apply the ideas developed here to strange hadrons., Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures, and 17 tables included

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
In this paper we consider a sequential "meson emission" mechanism for charmonium decays of the type Psi -> N Nbar m, where Psi is a generic charmonium state, N is a nucleon and m is a light meson. This decay mechanism, which may not be dominant in general, assumes that an NNbar pair is created during charmonium annihilation, and the light meson m is emitted from the outgoing nucleon or antinucleon line. A straightforward generalization of this model can incorporate intermediate N* resonances. We derive Dalitz plot event densities for the cases Psi = eta_c, J/psi, chi_c0, chi_c1} and psi' and m = pi0, f0 and omega (and implicitly, any 0^{-+}, 0^{++} or 1^{--} final light meson). It may be possible to separate the contribution of this decay mechanism to the full decay amplitude through characteristic event densities. For the decay subset Psi -> p pbar pi0 the two model parameters are known, so we are able to predict absolute numerical partial widths for Gamma(Psi -> p pbar pi0). In the specific case J/psi -> p pbar pi0 the predicted partial width and M_{p pi0} event distribution are intriguingly close to experiment. We also consider the possibility of scalar meson and glueball searches in Psi -> p pbar f0. If the meson emission contributions to Psi -> N Nbar m decays can be isolated and quantified, they can be used to estimate meson-nucleon strong couplings {g_NNm}, which are typically poorly known, and are a crucial input in meson exchange models of the NN interaction. The determination of g_NNpi from J\psi -> p pbar pi0 and the (poorly known) g_NNomega and the anomalous "strong magnetic" coupling kappa_{NNomega} from J/psi -> p pbar omega are considered as examples., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The polarization observable I^s, a feature exclusive to the acoplanar kinematics of multi-meson final states produced via linearly polarized photons, has been measured for the first time. Results for the reaction g p -> p pi0 eta are presented for incoming photon energies between 970 MeV and 1650 MeV along with the beam asymmetry I^c. The comparably large asymmetries demonstrate a high sensitivity of I^s to the dynamics of the reaction. Fits using Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis demonstrate that the new polarization observables carry significant information on the contributing partial waves., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, v2 to appear in Phys. The semileptonic decays of the lowest-lying double-heavy baryons is treated in a quark model. For the $\Xi_{bb}$, hyperfine mixing in the spin wave function leaves the total rate for decay into the lowest lying daughter baryons essentially unchanged, but changes the relative rates into the $\Xi_{bc}$ and $\Xi_{bc}^\prime$. The same pattern is obtained in the decays of the $\Omega_{bb}$. For the $\Xi_{bc}$, this mixing leads to factor of about 17 suppression in the decay rate to the $\Xi_{cc}^*$, and a factor of two suppression in the total decay rate. For the $\Omega_{bc}$, the decay to the $\Omega_{cc}^*$ is suppressed by a factor of more than 30 from the unmixed case, and the total decay rate is decreased to about 40% of the decay rate obtained when mixing is ignored., Comment: 7 pages

A quark model is applied to the spectrum of baryons containing heavy quarks. The model gives masses for the known heavy baryons that are in agreement with experiment, but for the doubly-charmed baryon Cascade_{cc}, the model prediction is too heavy. Mixing between the Cascade_Q and Cascade_Q^\prime states is examined and is found to be small for the lowest lying states. In contrast with this, mixing between the Cascade_{bc} and Cascade_{bc}^\prime states is found to be large, and the implication of this mixing for properties of these states is briefly discussed. We also examine heavy-quark spin-symmetry multiplets, and find that many states in the model can be placed in such multiplets. We compare our predictions with those of a number of other authors., Comment: Version published in International Journal of Modern Physics A

29. Evidence for a J/psi-ppbar Pauli Strong Coupling ?

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The couplings of charmonia and charmonium hybrids (generically Psi) to ppbar are of great interest in view of future plans to study these states using an antiproton storage ring at GSI. These low to moderate energy Psi-ppbar couplings are not well understood theoretically, and currently must be determined from experiment. In this letter we note that the two independent Dirac (gamma_mu) and Pauli (sigma_munu) ppbar couplings of the J/psi and psi' can be constrained by the angular distribution of e+e- -> (J/psi, psi') -> ppbar on resonance. A comparison of our theoretical results to recent unpolarized data allows estimates of the ppbar couplings; in the better determined J/psi case the data is inconsistent with a pure Dirac (gamma_mu) coupling, and can be explained by the presence of a sigma_munu term. This Pauli coupling may significantly affect the cross section of the PANDA process p pbar -> pi0 J/psi near threshold. There is a phase ambiguity that makes it impossible to uniquely determine the magnitudes and relative phase of the Dirac and Pauli couplings from the unpolarized angular distributions alone; we show in detail how this can be resolved through a study of the polarized reactions., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. v2 generalizes v1 to complex J/psi-ppbar couplings

The semileptonic decays of $\Omega_c$ and $\Omega_b$ are treated in the framework of a constituent quark model developed in a previous paper on the semileptonic decays of heavy $\Lambda$ baryons. Analytic results for the form factors for the decays to ground states and a number of excited states are evaluated. For $\Omega_b$ to $\Omega_c$ the form factors obtained are shown to satisfy the relations predicted at leading order in the heavy-quark effective theory at the non-recoil point. A modified fit of nonrelativistic and semirelativistic Hamiltonians generates configuration-mixed baryon wave functions from the known masses and the measured $\lcle$ rate, with wave functions expanded in both harmonic oscillator and Sturmian bases. Decay rates of $\ob$ to pairs of ground and excited $\omc$ states related by heavy-quark symmetry calculated using these configuration-mixed wave functions are in the ratios expected from heavy-quark effective theory, to a good approximation. Our predictions for the semileptonic elastic branching fraction of $\Omega_Q$ vary minimally within the models we use. We obtain an average value of (84$\pm$ 2%) for the fraction of $\Omega_c\to \Xi^{(*)}$ decays to ground states, and 91% for the fraction of $\Omega_c\to \Omega^{(*)}$ decays to the ground state $\Omega$. The elastic fraction of $\ob \to \omc$ ranges from about 50% calculated with the two harmonic-oscillator models, to about 67% calculated with the two Sturmian models., Comment: 52 pages, 8 figures

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
We explore some of the rich structure of the polarization observables recently developed for processes like $\gamma N\to\pi\pi N$ and $\gamma N\to K \bar{K} N$ in the framework of a specific model for the latter process. Emphasis is placed on observables that may be accesible at existing facilities in the near future. The sensitivity of the observables to the details of the model indicate that they will be a very useful tool in differentiating between different models for reactions like these. In the framework of a model for $\gamma N\to K \bar{K} N$, we examine the sensitivity of the observables to coupling constants of the $\phi$, to the properties of the $\Lambda(1405)$, and to the existence of the $\Theta^+$., Comment: 21 pages, latex, 17 figures, 1 style file included

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
We develop polarization observables for the processes $\gamma N\to\pi\pi N$ and $\pi N\to\pi\pi N$, using both a helicity and hybrid helicity-transversity basis. Such observables are crucial if processes that produce final states consisting of a spin-1/2 baryon and two pseudoscalar mesons are to be fully exploited for baryon spectroscopy. We derive relationships among the observables, as well as inequalities that they must satisfy. We also discuss the observables that must be measured in `complete' experiments, and briefly examine the prospects for measurement of some of these observables in the near future., Comment: 20 pages, using revtex4

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
We examine cross sections for the processes $\gamma N\to NK\bar{K}$ in the framework of a phenomenological Lagrangian. We include contributions from $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ resonances up to spin 3/2, as well as those from an exotic $\Theta^+$. We allow the $\Theta^+$ to have spin 1/2 or 3/2, with either positive or negative parity in each case. We also allow the state to be either isovector or isoscalar. We find that the scenario that most closely matches observations at Jefferson Laboratory requires a moderately large coupling of the $\Theta^+$ to $NK^*$., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, one style file replaced to fix figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The radiative decays of $D^*$, $B^*$, and other excited heavy mesons are analyzed in a relativistic quark model for the light degrees of freedom and in the limit of heavy quark spin-flavor symmetry. The analysis of strong decays carried out in the corresponding chiral quark model is used to calculate the strong decays and determine the branching ratios of the radiative $D^*$ decays. Consistency with the observed branching ratios requires the inclusion of the heavy quark component of the electromagnetic current and the introduction of an anomalous magnetic moment for the light quark. It is observed that not only $D$, but also $B$ meson transitions within a heavy quark spin multiplet are affected by the presence of the heavy quark current., Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX. Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The application of quark models to the spectra and strong and electromagnetic couplings of baryons is reviewed. This review focuses on calculations which attempt a global description of the masses and decay properties of baryons, although recent developments in applying large N_c QCD and lattice QCD to the baryon spectrum are described. After outlining the conventional one-gluon-exchange picture, models which consider extensions to this approach are contrasted with dynamical quark models based on Goldstone-boson exchange and an algebraic collective-excitation approach. The spectra and electromagnetic and strong couplings that result from these models are compared with the quantities extracted from the data and each other, and the impact of various model assumptions on these properties is emphasized. Prospects for the resolution of the important issues raised by these comparisons are discussed., Comment: 91 page review article; 25 figures, 9 tables; submitted to Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The application of the tensor formalism of the heavy quark effective theory (HQET) at leading order to strong decays of heavy hadrons is presented. Comparisons between experimental and theoretical predictions of ratios of decay rates for B mesons, D mesons and kaons are given. The application of HQET to strange mesons presents some encouraging results. The spin-flavor symmetry is used to predict some decay rates that have not yet been measured., Comment: 10 pages

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
It is pointed out that the third of five low-lying P11 states predicted by a constituent quark model can be identified with the third of four states in a solution from a three-channel analysis by the Zagreb group. This is one of the so-called ``missing'' resonances, predicted at 1880 MeV. The fit of the Zagreb group to the pi N -> eta N data is the crucial element in finding this fourth resonance in the P11 partial wave., Comment: 8 pages, revtex; expanded acknowledgements

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The amplitudes for one-pion mediated transitions between heavy meson excited states are obtained in the framework of the relativistic chiral quark model. The effective coupling constants to pions and the decay widths of excited heavy mesons with l<=2 for non-radially excited, and the l=0 radially excited mesons are presented for both charmed and beauty mesons. We also discuss the allowed decays of strange excited heavy mesons by emission of a K-meson., Comment: 20 pages, revtex

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The strong decays of excited nonstrange baryons into the final states Lambda K, Sigma K, and for the first time into Lambda(1405) K, Lambda(1520) K, Sigma(1385) K, Lambda K*, and Sigma K*, are examined in a relativized quark pair creation model. The wave functions and parameters of the model are fixed by previous calculations of N pi and N pi pi, etc., decays. Our results show that it should be possible to discover several new negative parity excited baryons and confirm the discovery of several others by analyzing these final states in kaon production experiments. We also establish clear predictions for the relative strengths of certain states to decay to Lambda(1405) K and Lambda(1520) K, which can be tested to determine if a three-quark model of the Lambda(1405) K is valid. Our results compare favorably with the results of partial wave analyses of the limited existing data for the Lambda K and Sigma K channels. We do not find large Sigma K decay amplitudes for a substantial group of predicted and weakly established negative-parity states, in contrast to the only previous work to consider decays of these states into the strange final states Lambda K and Sigma K., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, RevTeX

Nuclear Theory ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The decays of excited nonstrange baryons into the final states Delta eta and Delta omega are examined in a relativized quark pair creation model. The wavefunctions and parameters of the model are fixed by previous calculations of N pi and N pi pi, etc., decays through various quasi-two body channels including N eta and N omega. Our results show that the combination of thresholds just below the region of interest and the isospin selectivity of these channels should allow the discovery of several new baryons in such experiments., Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX

TRANSITION to adulthood ,YOUNG adults ,COGNITIVE interviewing ,ADULT literacy ,DELPHI method - Abstract
Purpose: Following increased interest in physical literacy (PL), development of appropriate tools for assessment has become an important next step for its operationalization. To forward the development of such tools, the objective of this study was to build the foundations of the Évaluation de la Littératie Physique (ELIP), designed to help reduce existing tensions in approaches to PL assessment that may be resulting in a low uptake into applied settings. Methods: We followed two steps: (1) the development of the first version of ELIP by deploying a Delphi method (n = 30); and (2) the modification of items through cognitive interviews with emerging adults (n = 32). Results: The expert consensus highlighted four dimensions of PL to be assessed--physical; affective; cognitive; and social--with new perspectives, including a preference for broad motor tests over fitness. Conclusion: Results offer new insights into the assessment of emerging adults' PL, but ELIP still requires further work concerning validity, reliability, and sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
