2. On the nature of the blue giants in NGC 330

Abstract

The young SMC cluster NGC 330 contains a number of blue stars that lie above the main-sequence turnoff found from our isochrone fitting and below the position of the blue supergiants. We used our own, new spectroscopy and published data on these stars to investigate their possible nature. Problems in interpreting the evolutionary status of the blue giants have been found in several preceding studies. In theoretical H-R diagrams, these stars lie in the rapidly traversed post main-sequence gap, similar to the unexpected concentration found by Fitzpatrick & Garmany (1990) in the H-R diagram of the LMC. We argue that these stars probably are core H burning main-sequence stars that appear as blue stragglers resulting from binary evolution as described in the simulations of Pols \& Marinus (1994) and effects of rapid rotation. Many of the blue stragglers are Be stars and likely rapid rotators. We suggest that there is evidence for the presence of blue stragglers also in NGC 1818, NGC 2004, and NGC 2100. We point out that blue stragglers may be a general phenomenon in the CMDs of young clusters in the Magellanic Clouds and discuss the implications for IMF and age determinations., Comment: Latex with links to 2 postscript figures, uuencoded gzipped tar file. The application of an informatics evaluation framework that provides a heuristic for matching the stage of system design and level of evaluation is illustrated. The advanced information system helps in increasing the understanding of their effective use in complex settings and to adapt them to a range of user population, but without sound evaluation methodologies throughout the stages of system development, information systems have less potential to influence healthcare processes.

© 2019 Human Kinetics, Inc. Assessment of physical literacy poses a dilemma of what instrument to use. There is currently no guide regarding the suitability of common assessment approaches. The purpose of this brief communication is to provide a user's guide for selecting physical literacy assessment instruments appropriate for use in school physical education and sport settings. Although recommendations regarding specific instruments are not provided, the guide offers information about key attributes and considerations for the use. A decision flow chart has been developed to assist teachers and affiliated school practitioners to select appropriate methods of assessing physical literacy. School physical education and sport scenarios are presented to illustrate this process. It is important that practitioners are empowered to select the most appropriate instrument/s to suit their needs.

© 2019 Human Kinetics, Inc. Purpose: The development of a physical literacy definition and standards framework suitable for implementation in Australia. Method:Modified Delphi methodology. Results: Consensus was established on four defining statements: Core-Physical literacy is lifelong holistic learning acquired and applied in movement and physical activity contexts; Composition-Physical literacy reflects ongoing changes integrating physical, psychological, cognitive, and social capabilities; Importance-Physical literacy is vital in helping us lead healthy and fulfilling lives through movement and physical activity; and Aspiration-A physically literate person is able to draw on his/her integrated physical, psychological, cognitive, and social capacities to support health promoting and fulfilling movement and physical activity, relative to the situation and context, throughout the lifespan. The standards framework addressed four learning domains (physical, psychological, cognitive, and social), spanning five learning configurations/levels. Conclusion: The development of a bespoke program for a new context has important implications for both existing and future programs.

27. The problem of temporal scale in optimization: three contrasting views of hummingbird visits to flowers

Abstract

We modeled hummingbird visits to flowers on three temporal scales: tongue loading, the licking cycle, and entire visits to flowers. The nectar concentration that maximizes energy intake rate increases with the temporal scale of integration; therefore, optimal nectar concentration for nectar volumes that require many licks is higher than predicted by models that assume single licks. Since birds must position, insert, and withdraw their bills in addition to licking nectar, the optimum at the scale of flower visits is even higher. This "overhead time cost" of handling flower morphology, for most nontraplining hummingbirds under most natural conditions, is as great as or greater than the cost of handling nectar. For these birds, the potential variation in the fine-scale factors that determine nectar intake rate during licking has little effect on flower-handling time and therefore is unlikely to determine optimal nectar concentration or the profitability of visiting flowers. The conclusion that energy intake rate and optimal nectar concentration are sensitive to temporal scale of integration applies at all scales in hummingbird foraging systems, and we suggest that it also generalizes across systems.

Abstract

A t(17;19) chromosomal translocation in early B-lineage acute leukemia was shown to result in chimeric transcripts that contain sequences from the E2A basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor gene on chromosome 19, fused to sequences from a previously unidentified gene (HLF) on chromosome 17 that encodes a hepatic leukemia factor. The chimeric protein consisted of the amino-terminal transactivation domain of E2A linked to the carboxyl-terminal basic region-leucine zipper domain of HLF. HLF was normally expressed in liver and kidney, but not in lymphoid cells, and was found to be closely related to the leucine zipper-containing transcription factors DBP (albumin D-box binding protein) and TEF (thyrotroph embryonic factor), which regulate developmental stage-specific gene expression.

Abstract

Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are intended to provide evidence based knowledge for decision making for patient care. However, these guidelines have been poorly adopted by healthcare providers. One reason for this may be the static paper-based formats, isolated from the point of care. Biomedical informatics has provided a solution to this limitation through Computer Interpretable Guidelines (CIGs). An essential component of this process is CPG translation to a computer interpretable model. From the guideline modeling literature, the translators of CPGs typically are physicians. It is not known if other healthcare providers (i.e., Advance Practice Nurses [APNs]) comprehend CPGs similarly. This descriptive study utilized novice and expert APN and physician participants (varied by level of expertise) in a CPG comprehension task. Demographic data, verbal protocols, and recall model drawings were obtained and analyzed by description, protocol analysis, discourse analysis, and content analysis. The findings of this study indicate similar comprehension by the expert APNs and physicians suggesting that either type of expert may be utilized for modeling CPGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The number of health sciences educational programs that are integrating personal digital assistants (PDAs) into their curricula is on the rise. In this paper, we report an evaluation of the usefulness of a PDA-based advanced practice nursing (APN) student clinical log through faculty stakeholder exemplars in three areas: pediatric asthma care; procedures of Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) students; and diagnostic and screening procedures of Women's Health NP students. We generated descriptive data through routine queries and through custom SQL queries at the request of a specific faculty member who wished to examine a particular aspect of an educational program. In addition, we discussed the potential implications of the data with the respective faculty members. The exemplars provide evidence that faculty stakeholders found the APN student clinical log to be useful for a variety of purposes including monitoring of student performance, benchmarking, and quality of care assessments.
