Positive creativity involves creative ideas and products that are beneficial to humanity. This paper discusses the importance of fostering positive and transformational creativity in PK-12 and college settings, and concrete classroom strategies for nurturing positive creativity through a service learning pedagogy. A brief history of service learning pedagogy is discussed, along with a practical application of the K-12 Developmental Service Learning Typology, a theoretical service learning pedagogical model. This practical application highlights three examples of how service learning can foster positive and transformational creativity: experiential learning through community service or volunteering, problem-based learning through community exploration, and using Destination Imagination as a form of social or community activism. The latter two examples demonstrate using curiosity to create positive, novel, and useful products through a cycle of deep exploration of topics that each student has an intense interest in, called the Roberts Curiosity Community Exploration Cycle (R-CCEC).

BackgroundPostural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), and May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) are three syndromes that are often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. The true prevalence of these syndromes may be higher than currently reported. The following case series is the first to report a three-way association between POTS, EDS, and MTS.Case summaryWe describe three patients with concomitant POTS, EDS, and MTS. Although abdominopelvic vasculature evaluation can be difficult via conventional imaging techniques, we present the use of novel dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography with Differential Subsampling with Cartesian Ordering (DISCO) and four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging to aid vasculature evaluation and the diagnosis of MTS. Two patients underwent left common iliac vein stenting to treat MTS, experiencing significant improvement in their POTS symptoms and quality of life.DiscussionEhlers-Danlos syndrome, POTS, and MTS may interact synergistically to exacerbate symptoms. Patients with EDS should be evaluated for possible POTS and pelvic venous complications. Left common iliac vein stenting for MTS can mitigate POTS symptoms by decreasing lower extremity venous pooling and should be considered in this patient population. Further research is needed to understand the exact mechanism and intricacies of this syndrome triad.

Background Four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI has the potential to provide hemodynamic insights for a variety of abdominopelvic vascular diseases, but its clinical utility is currently impaired by background phase error, which can be challenging to correct. Purpose To assess the feasibility of using deep learning to automatically perform image-based background phase error correction in 4D flow MRI and to compare its effectiveness relative to manual image-based correction. Materials and Methods A convenience sample of 139 abdominopelvic 4D flow MRI acquisitions performed between January 2016 and July 2020 was retrospectively collected. Manual phase error correction was performed using dedicated imaging software and served as the reference standard. After reserving 40 examinations for testing, the remaining examinations were randomly divided into training (86% [85 of 99]) and validation (14% [14 of 99]) data sets to train a multichannel three-dimensional U-Net convolutional neural network. Flow measurements were obtained for the infrarenal aorta, common iliac arteries, common iliac veins, and inferior vena cava. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlation, Bland-Altman analysis, and F tests with Bonferroni correction. Results A total of 139 patients (mean age, 47 years ± 14 [standard deviation]; 108 women) were included. Inflow-outflow correlation improved after manual correction (ρ = 0.94, P < .001) compared with that before correction (ρ = 0.50, P < .001). Automated correction showed similar results (ρ = 0.91, P < .001) and demonstrated very strong correlation with manual correction (ρ = 0.98, P < .001). Both correction methods reduced inflow-outflow variance, improving mean difference from -0.14 L/min (95% limits of agreement: -1.61, 1.32) (uncorrected) to 0.05 L/min (95% limits of agreement: -0.32, 0.42) (manually corrected) and 0.05 L/min (95% limits of agreement: -0.38, 0.49) (automatically corrected). There was no significant difference in inflow-outflow variance between manual and automated correction methods (P = .10). Conclusion Deep learning automated phase error correction reduced inflow-outflow bias and variance of volumetric flow measurements in four-dimensional flow MRI, achieving results comparable with manual image-based phase error correction. © RSNA, 2021 See also the editorial by Roldán-Alzate and Grist in this issue.

OBJECTIVE:We report here an initial experience using 4D flow MRI in pelvic imaging-specifically, in imaging uterine fibroids. We hypothesized that blood flow might correlate with fibroid volume and that quantifying blood flow might help to predict the amount of embolic required to achieve stasis at subsequent uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). MATERIALS AND METHODS:Thirty-three patients with uterine fibroids and seven control subjects underwent pelvic MRI with 4D flow imaging. Of the patients with fibroids, 10 underwent 4D flow imaging before UFE and seven after UFE; in the remaining 16 patients with fibroids, UFE had yet to be performed. Four-dimensional flow measurements were performed using Arterys CV Flow. The flow fraction of the internal iliac artery was expressed as the ratio of internal iliac artery flow to external iliac artery flow and was compared between groups. The flow ratios between the internal iliac arteries on each side were calculated. Fibroid volume versus internal iliac flow fraction, embolic volume versus internal iliac flow fraction, and embolic volume ratio between sides versus the ratio of internal iliac artery flows between sides were compared. RESULTS:The mean internal iliac flow fraction was significantly higher in the 26 patients who underwent imaging before UFE (mean ± standard error, 0.78 ± 0.06) than in the seven patients who underwent imaging after UFE (0.48 ± 0.07, p < 0.01) and in the seven control patients without fibroids (0.48 ± 0.08, p < 0.0001). The internal iliac flow fraction correlated well with fibroid volumes before UFE (r = 0.7754, p < 0.0001) and did not correlate with fibroid volumes after UFE (r = -0.3051, p = 0.51). The ratio of embolic required to achieve stasis between sides showed a modest correlation with the ratio of internal iliac flow (r = 0.6776, p = 0.03). CONCLUSION:Internal iliac flow measured by 4D flow MRI correlates with fibroid volume and is predictive of the ratio of embolic required to achieve stasis on each side at subsequent UFE and may be useful for preprocedural evaluation of patients with uterine fibroids.

The diagnosis of a common cause of chronic pelvic pain can be made by visualizing reflux in the ovarian veins. Fluoroscopic venography is the gold standard for diagnosing ovarian vein reflux, but it is an invasive technique that exposes patients to ionizing radiation. MRI, with its lack of ionizing radiation and capability of high-temporal and spatial-resolution vascular imaging, has the potential to provide similar diagnostic information. This retrospective report describes and assesses the utility of a dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI technique based on Differential Subsampling with Cartesian Ordering (DISCO)–MRI in 30 patients with chronic pelvic pain. Among the 14 patients who underwent both DISCO–MRI and fluoroscopic venograms, 11 (78.6%) exhibited concordant results, while 3 patients (21.4%) had discordant findings. These results suggest the potential of multiphasic contrast-enhanced DISCO–MRI as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for evaluating chronic pelvic pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coarse woody debris (CWD) in the form of logs, downed wood, stumps and large tree limbs is an important structural habitat feature for many small mammal species, including the American marten (Martes americana). At a long-term experimental trial in northern temperate hemlock-cedar forests of British Columbia, Canada, we analysed the impact of varying amounts of overstory basal area retention: 0% (clearcut), 40%, 70%, and 100% (unharvested) on CWD volume, decay class, and inputs from windthrow over 27 years. We used CWD attributes (diameter, length, decay class, and height above the ground) known to be favourable for martens to create an index for assessing the impact of harvesting intensity on CWD habitat features. Stands with 70% retention had CWD attributes that resulted in CWD habitat features similar to unharvested stands. Clearcuts contained pieces that were smaller, more decayed, and closer to the ground, which contributed to a habitat that was less valuable, compared with stands that had higher retention. Over the 27-year period, windthrown trees were the majority of CWD inputs, and volume change was positively related to percent retention. Our results highlight that forest management influences CWD size and input dynamics over multiple decades, and the need for consideration of these impacts when undertaking long-term multiple-use forestry planning. Les debris ligneux grossier (DLG) sous forme de billes, de bois au sol, de souches et de grosses branches d'arbre constituent une importante caracteristique structurale de l'habitat de plusieurs petits mammiferes, incluant la marte d'Amerique (Martes americana). Dans le cadre d'un essai experimental a long terme dans des forets temperees nordiques de pruche et de thuya de la Colombie-Britannique, au Canada, nous avons analyse l'impact de la retention de differents niveaux de surface terriere : 0 (absence de recolte), 40,70 et 100 % (coupe rase) sur le volume, la classe de decomposition et les apports de DLG provenant des chablis sur une periode de 27 ans. Nous avons utilise les attributs (diametre, longueur, classe de decomposition et hauteur au-dessus du sol des DLG) censes etre favorables a la marte pour creer un indice permettant d'evaluer l'impact de l'intensite de la coupe sur les caracteristiques de l'habitat de DLG. Les peuplements avec 70 % de retention avaient des DLG dont les attributs correspondaient aux caracteristiques de l'habitat de DLG similaires a ce qu'on observe dans les peuplements non recoltes. Les coupes rases contenaient des pieces plus petites, plus decomposees et situees plus pres du sol qui constituaient un habitat moins interessant comparativement aux peuplements oU le taux de retention etait plus eleve. Durant la periode de 27 ans, la majorite des apports de DLG sont venus des arbres renverses par le vent et le changement de volume etait positivement relie au taux de retention. Nos resultats mettent en evidence l'influence de l'amenagement forestier sur la taille et la dynamique d'apport des DLG au cours de multiples decennies et le besoin de tenir compte de ces impacts lorsqu'on entreprend la planification a long terme de l'amenagement forestier polyvalent. This article reports on the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP), a new model of basic writing that has produced dramatic successes for the basic writing program at the Community College of Baltimore County. Borrowing from mainstreaming programs, studio courses, fast track programs, and learning communities, ALP, for four consecutive semesters, has doubled the number of basic writers who succeed in passing first-year composition, has cut the attrition rate for these students in half, has allowed them to accomplish this in half the time, and has done it all at slightly less cost per successful student than traditional basic writing courses. The beliefs and values students hold toward themselves, given tasks, and achievement itself can influence what tasks students seek, and whether they are able to obtain them. On the basis of previous research on underachievement and motivation, we developed the Achievement Orientation Model (AOM) to explore the issue of student achievement. The model posits that individuals' self-perceptions in three areas (self-efficacy, goal valuation, and environmental perceptions) interact to motivate students to self-regulate their behaviors and subsequently engage and achieve. Further, societal and cultural values influence students' attitudes in the three areas of self-efficacy, goal valuation, and environmental perceptions, as well as their ability to self-regulate, through students' interactions with their peers, parents, and teachers. In this paper, we discuss the components of the AOM, as well as the importance of talent development perspectives on shaping student attitudes that promote engagement and ultimately high levels of achievement.

The protein YbiV from Escherichia coli K12 MG1655 is a hypothetical protein with sequence homology to the haloacid dehalogenase (HAD) superfamily of proteins. Although numerous members of this family have been identified, the functions of few are known. Using the crystal structure, sequence analysis, and biochemical assays, we have characterized ybiV as a HAD phosphatase. The crystal structure of YbiV reveals a two domain protein, one with the characteristic HAD hydrolase fold, the other an inserted a/b fold. In an effort to understand the mechanism we also solved and report the structures of YbiV in complex with beryllofluoride (BeF3-) and aluminum trifluoride (AlF3) which have been shown to mimic the phosphorylated intermediate and transition state for hydrolysis, respectively, in analogy to other HAD phosphatases. Analysis of the structures reveals the substrate binding cavity, which is hydrophilic in nature. Both structure and sequence homology indicate ybiV may be a sugar phosphatase, which is supported by biochemical assays which measured the release of free phosphate on a number of sugar-like substrates. We also investigated available genomic and functional data in an effort to determine the physiological substrate.
