Search

Measurements of the angular momentum (spin) of astrophysical black holes are extremely important, as they provide information on the black hole formation and evolution. We present simulated observations of a X-ray binary system with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), with the aim to study the robustness of black hole spin and geometry measurements using X-ray polarimetry. As a representative example, we used the parameters of GRS 1915+105 in its former unobscured, soft state. In order to simulate the polarization properties, we modeled the source emission with a multicolor blackbody accounting for thermal radiation from the accretion disk, including returning radiation. Our analysis shows that the polarimetric observations in the X-ray waveband will be able to estimate both spin and inclination of the system with a good precision (without returning radiation we obtained for the lowest spin $\Delta a \leq 0.4$ (0.4/0.998 $\sim$ 40%) for spin and $\Delta i \leq 30^\circ$ (30$^\circ$/70$^\circ$ $\sim$ 43%) for inclination, while for the higher spin values we obtained $\Delta a \leq 0.12$ ($\sim$ 12%) for spin and $\Delta i \leq 20^\circ$ ($ \sim $ 29%) for inclination, within 1$ \sigma $ errors). When focusing on the case of returning radiation and treating inclination as a known parameter, we were able to successfully reconstruct spin and disk albedo in $\Delta a \leq 0.15$ ($\sim$ 15%) interval and $\Delta$ albedo $\leq 0.45$ (45%) intervals within 1$ \sigma $ errors. We conclude that X-ray polarimetry will be a useful tool to constrain black hole spins, in addition to timing and spectral-fitting methods., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The observed degree of linear polarization of ~10% is far below theoretical expectations for this object, and stays low throughout the spin cycle of the pulsar. Both the degree and angle of polarization exhibit variability with the pulse phase, allowing us to measure the pulsar spin position angle 57(2) deg and the magnetic obliquity 12(4) deg, which is an essential step towards detailed modelling of the intrinsic emission of X-ray pulsars. Combining our results with the optical polarimetric data, we find that the spin axis of the neutron star and the angular momentum of the binary orbit are misaligned by at least ~20 deg, which is a strong argument in support of the models explaining the stability of the observed superorbital variability with the precession of the neutron star. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited., This Article is based on observations made by IXPE, a joint US and Italian mission. Although the jets are known to be ultimately powered by a supermassive black hole, how the particles are accelerated to such high energies has been an unanswered question. The process must be related to the magnetic field, which can be probed by observations of the polarization of light from the jets. Measurements of the radio to optical polarization—the only range available until now—probe extended regions of the jet containing particles that left the acceleration site days to years earlier1,2,3, and hence do not directly explore the acceleration mechanism, as could X-ray measurements. Here we report the detection of X-ray polarization from the blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501). We measure an X-ray linear polarization degree ΠX of around 10%, which is a factor of around 2 higher than the value at optical wavelengths, with a polarization angle parallel to the radio jet. This points to a shock front as the source of particle acceleration and also implies that the plasma becomes increasingly turbulent with distance from the shock. © The Author(s) 2022., I.L. was supported by the JSPS postdoctoral short-term fellowship programme. In an X-ray pulsar, a neutron star accretes matter from a stellar companion through an accretion disk. The high magnetic field of the rotating neutron star disrupts the inner edge of the disc, funneling the gas to flow onto the magnetic poles on its surface. Hercules X-1 is in many ways the prototypical X-ray pulsar; it shows persistent X-ray emission and it resides with its companion HZ Her, a two-solar-mass star, at about 7~kpc from Earth1. Its emission varies on three distinct timescales2 the neutron star rotates every 1.2~seconds, it is eclipsed by its companion each 1.7~days, and the system exhibits a superorbital period of 35~days which has remained remarkably stable since its discovery3. Several lines of evidence point to the source of this variation as the precession of the accretion disc4,5, the precession of the neutron star6,7 or both8. Despite the many hints over the past fifty years, the precession of the neutron star itself has yet not been confirmed or refuted. We here present X-ray polarization measurements with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer9 (IXPE) which probe the spin geometry of the neutron star. These observations provide direct evidence that the 35-day-period is set by the free precession of the neutron star crust, which has the important implication that its moment of inertia eigenvalues differ fractionally by a few parts per ten million10. Furthermore, we find indications that the basic spin geometry of the neutron star is altered by torques on timescale of a few hundred days.

We report the results of new XMM-Newton observations of the middle-aged ($\sim$10$^5$ yr) radio pulsar PSR J1740+1000 carried out in 2017-2018. These long pointings ($\sim$530 ks) show that the non-thermal emission, well described by a power-law spectrum with photon index $\Gamma=1.80\pm0.17$, is pulsed with a $\sim$30% pulsed fraction above 2 keV. The thermal emission can be well fit with the sum of two blackbodies of temperatures $kT_1=70\pm4$ eV, $kT_2=137\pm7$ eV, $R_1=5.4_{-0.9}^{+1.3}$ km and $R_2=0.70_{-0.13}^{+0.15}$ km (for a distance of 1.2 kpc). We found no evidence for absorption lines as those observed in the shorter XMM-Newton observations ($\sim$67 ks) of this pulsar carried out in 2006. The X-ray thermal and non-thermal components peak in anti-phase and none of them is seen to coincide in phase with the radio pulse. This, coupled with the small difference in the emission radii of the two thermal components, disfavors an interpretation in which the dipolar polar cap is heated by magnetospheric backward-accelerated particles. Comparison with the other thermally-emitting isolated neutron stars with spectra well described by the sum of two components shows that the ratios $T_2$/$T_1$ and $R_2$/$R_1$ are similar for objects of different classes. The Vela pulsar wind nebula is powered by a young pulsar (B0833-45, aged 11,000 years)1 and located inside an extended structure called Vela X, which is itself inside the supernova remnant2. Previous X-ray observations revealed two prominent arcs that are bisected by a jet and counter jet3,4. Radio maps have shown high linear polarization of 60% in the outer regions of the nebula5. Here we report an X-ray observation of the inner part of the nebula, where polarization can exceed 60% at the leading edge—approaching the theoretical limit of what can be produced by synchrotron emission. We infer that, in contrast with the case of the supernova remnant, the electrons in the pulsar wind nebula are accelerated with little or no turbulence in a highly uniform magnetic field. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited., The IXPE is a joint US and Italian mission. It is of common consensus that the synchrotron emission is responsible for the low frequency peak, while the origin of the high frequency hump is still debated. The analysis of X-rays and their polarization can provide a valuable tool to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the origin of high-energy emission of blazars. We report the first observations of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, from which an upper limit to the polarization degree ΠX < 12.6% was found in the 2–8 keV band. We contemporaneously measured the polarization in radio, infrared, and optical wavelengths. Our multiwavelength polarization analysis disfavors a significant contribution of proton-synchrotron radiation to the X-ray emission at these epochs. Instead, it supports a leptonic origin for the X-ray emission in BL Lac. © 2022. The Author(s). The Galactic Center harbors diffuse X-ray emission co-spatial with giant molecular clouds and featuring hard X-ray spectra with a prominent fluorescent iron line at 6.4 keV [1–3]. These spectral properties are characteristic of the reflected emission from a neutral gas illuminated by X-rays. However, there are no persistent X-ray sources in that region that are bright enough to provide the required illumination level. Moreover, the observed diffuse emission is variable on time scales of years [4, 5], implying that the primary source of X-rays must be variable, too. The most exciting and far-reaching scenario is that a very powerful flare from the central supermassive black hole of the Milky Way, Sgr A*, provided the required flux of X-ray photons, when for a period shorter than a few years it became at least five orders of magnitude brighter than is typically observed today. Even if the primary emission was unpolarized, the reflected emission should be polarized in the direction perpendicular to the scattering plane with the degree of polarization being set by the scattering angle. Therefore, by measuring X-ray polarization one can infer the direction towards the primary source and, simultaneously, the mutual positions in space of the source and the cloud [6]. Here, we report the detection of X-ray polarization from the Galactic Center region obtained by the recently launched Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) mission. For a large region where Chandra and XMM-Newton identify spectral signatures of the reflection, IXPE measures a polarization degree of 31% ± 11% with a polarization angle -48° ± 11° for the scattered continuum. The latter corroborates the conjecture that Sgr A* is the primary source of illuminating photons, while the former implies that some 200 years ago our Galactic Center hosted an extremely bright active galactic nucleus, on par with the ones found in Seyfert galaxies, though only for a short time.

The 7.66 s pulsations were clearly detected throughout the IXPE observations as well as in the NICER soft X-ray observations, which we used as the basis for our timing analysis and to constrain the spectral shape over the 0.4–10 keV energy band. Chandra HETGS high-resolution X-ray spectra were also obtained near the times of the IXPE observations for firm spectral modeling. Polarization measurements could provide information on their magnetic fields and surface properties. We observed polarized x-rays from the magnetar 4U 0142+61 using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and found a linear polarization degree of 13.5 ± 0.8% averaged over the 2– to 8–kilo–electron volt band. The polarization changes with energy: The degree is 15.0 ± 1.0% at 2 to 4 kilo–electron volts, drops below the instrumental sensitivity ~4 to 5 kilo–electron volts, and rises to 35.2 ± 7.1% at 5.5 to 8 kilo–electron volts. The polarization angle also changes by 90° at ~4 to 5 kilo–electron volts. The overall polarization degree of 1.8% ± 0.3% is detected by summing over a large region, assuming circular symmetry for the polarization vectors. The measurements imply an average polarization degree for the synchrotron component of ∼2.5%, and close to 5% for the X-ray synchrotron-dominated forward shock region. These numbers are based on an assessment of the thermal and nonthermal radiation contributions, for which we used a detailed spatial-spectral model based on Chandra X-ray data. A pixel-by-pixel search for polarization provides a few tentative detections from discrete regions at the ∼ 3σ confidence level. Given the number of pixels, the significance is insufficient to claim a detection for individual pixels, but implies considerable turbulence on scales smaller than the angular resolution. Cas A's X-ray continuum emission is dominated by synchrotron radiation from regions within ≲1017 cm of the forward and reverse shocks. We find that (i) the measured polarization angle corresponds to a radially oriented magnetic field, similar to what has been inferred from radio observations; (ii) the X-ray polarization degree is lower than in the radio band (∼5%). Since shock compression should impose a tangential magnetic-field structure, the IXPE results imply that magnetic fields are reoriented within ∼1017 cm of the shock. If the magnetic-field alignment is due to locally enhanced acceleration near quasi-parallel shocks, the preferred X-ray polarization angle suggests a size of 3 × 1016 cm for cells with radial magnetic fields. © 2022. The soft X-ray pulsar RX J1856.5-3754 is the brightest member of a small class of thermally-emitting, radio-silent, isolated neutron stars. Its X-ray spectrum is almost indistinguishable from a blackbody with $kT^\infty\approx 60$ eV, but evidence of harder emission above $\sim 1$ keV has been recently found. We report on a spectral and timing analysis of RX J1856.5-3754 based on the large amount of data collected by XMM-Newton in 2002--2022, complemented by a dense monitoring campaign carried out by NICER in 2019. Through a phase-coherent timing analysis we obtained an improved value of the spin-down rate $\dot{\nu}=-6.042(4)\times10^{-16}$ Hz s$^{-1}$, reducing by more than one order magnitude the uncertainty of the previous measurement, and yielding a characteristic spin-down field of $1.47\times10^{13}$ G. We also detect two spectral components above $\sim1$ keV: a blackbody-like one with $kT^\infty=138\pm13$ eV and emitting radius $31_{-16}^{+8}$ m, and a power law with photon index $\Gamma=1.4_{-0.4}^{+0.5}$. The power-law 2--8\,keV flux, $(2.5_{-0.6}^{+0.7})\times10{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, corresponds to an efficiency of $10^{-3}$, in line with that seen in other pulsars. We also reveal a small difference between the $0.1$--$0.3$ keV and $0.3$--$1.2$ keV pulse profiles, as well as some evidence for a modulation above $1.2$ keV. These results show that, notwithstanding its simple spectrum, \eighteen still has a non-trivial thermal surface distribution and features non-thermal emission as seen in other pulsars with higher spin-down power., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using observations of X-ray pulsar Her X-1 by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, we report on a highly significant detection of the polarization signal from an accreting neutron star. The observed degree of the linear polarization of ∼ 10% is found to be far below theoretical expectations for this object, and stays low throughout the spin cycle of the pulsar. Both the polarization degree and the angle exhibit variability with pulse phase, which allowed us to measure the pulsar spin position angle and magnetic obliquity of the neutron star, which is an essential step towards detailed modeling of the intrinsic emission of X-ray pulsars. Combining our results with the optical polarimetric data, we find that the spin axis of the neutron star and the angular momentum of the binary orbit are misaligned by at least ∼20 deg, which is a strong argument in support of the models explaining stability of the observed super-orbital variability with the precession of the neutron star.

We report a polarimetric observation of the XRB Cygnus X-1 using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. The electric field position angle aligns with the outflowing jet, indicating that the jet is launched from the inner x-ray–emitting region. The polarization degree is 4.01 ± 0.20% at 2 to 8 kiloelectronvolts, implying that the accretion disk is viewed closer to edge-on than the binary orbit. Nearly simultaneous observations of Cen A were also taken with the Swift, NuSTAR, and INTEGRAL observatories. No statistically significant degree of polarization is detected with IXPE. These observations have a minimum detectable polarization at 99% confidence (MDP99) of 6.5% using a weighted, spectral model-independent calculation in the 2–8 keV band. The polarization angle ψ is consequently unconstrained. Spectral fitting across three orders of magnitude in X-ray energy (0.3–400 keV) demonstrates that the SED of Cen A is well described by a simple power law with moderate intrinsic absorption (NH ∼ 1023 cm−2) and a Fe Kα emission line, although a second unabsorbed power law is required to account for the observed spectrum at energies below 2 keV. This spectrum suggests that the reprocessing material responsible for this emission line is optically thin and distant from the central black hole. Our upper limits on the X-ray polarization are consistent with the predictions of Compton scattering, although the specific seed photon population responsible for the production of the X-rays cannot be identified. The low polarization degree, variability in the core emission, and the relative lack of variability in the Fe Kα emission line support a picture where electrons are accelerated in a region of highly disordered magnetic fields surrounding the innermost jet. © 2022. We report here the results of the first IXPE observation of a weakly magnetized neutron star, GS 1826−238, performed on 2022 March 29–31 when the source was in a high soft state. An upper limit (99.73% confidence level) of 1.3% for the linear polarization degree is obtained over the IXPE 2–8 keV energy range. Coordinated INTEGRAL and NICER observations were carried out simultaneously with IXPE. The spectral parameters obtained from the fits to the broadband spectrum were used as inputs for Monte Carlo simulations considering different possible geometries of the X-ray emitting region. Comparing the IXPE upper limit with these simulations, we can put constraints on the geometry and inclination angle of GS 1826–238. © 2023. The Author(s).
