The objective of this systematic review was to identify the association between overweight/obesity and level of physical activity in Brazilian children and adolescents in the school setting. For search strategy, the main reference databases (PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, ERIC) were used. Baseline searches resulted in 3,265 potentially relevant titles (2,775 titles after removal of duplicate studies); 21 studies met all inclusion criteria and were included for analysis. Studies were carried out from 2007 to 2019; 47.6% of them were conducted in Southern Brazil, and only one study had nationwide approach. Prevalence from 5.4% to 21% was identified for overweight, 3.5% to 16.9% for obesity and 11.8% to 40.1% for overweight + obesity. According to results, 64.3% of overweight, 69.8% of obese and 37.7% of young overweight people were considered insufficiently active. The non-standardization of instruments to assess levels of physical activity and the lack of information regarding other Brazilian regions were classified as important limitations. The results reinforce the increase in the prevalence of overweight in Brazilian children and adolescents, and the high prevalence of physical inactivity among them. For every ten overweight children/adolescents, six are reported to be insufficiently active.

Cardiorespiratory fitness is an important health status indicator. The purpose of this study was to verify the cardiorespiratory fitness according to age group and gender in children and adolescents from Sergipe, Brazil. It is a cross-sectional study with sample consisting of 195 adolescents of both genders with mean age of 11.75 ± 3.0 years. For the characterization of participants, a questionnaire with age and gender identification designed by researchers was used. Subsequently, participants were submitted to anthropometric evaluation in order to estimate the maturational stage by means of the peak height velocity (PHV). The 20-meter back-and-forth test was used to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness. Two-way ANOVA was applied with sample divided into two groups (“up to 13 years” and “above 13 years”). Polynomial contrast was used to identify the type of tendency for cardiorespiratory fitness, and simple contrast for multiple comparisons. All procedures were performed using SPSS version 22.0 software, considering 5% significance level. In the “over 13 years” group, there was a significant effect on the cardiorespiratory capacity behavior according to “gender” [F(1, 45) = 5.54, p = 0.02, r = 0.33] and “age” [F(4.45) = 3.37, p = 0.02, r = 0.48]. The simple contrast identified increased cardiorespiratory fitness behavior in relation to age groups of 15 and 16 year when compared to the age group of 14 years. It was concluded that gender and age positively influence cardiorespiratory fitness from the maturational reference age in the study group.

A flexibilidade é um componente da aptidão física relacionada à saúde que tem importância relacionada à manutenção da independência funcional e realização das atividades da vida diária. Esta revisão sistemática tem como objetivo analisar a evidência existente na literatura quanto a capacidade física flexibilidade em crianças e adolescentes brasileiros. As buscas foram realizadas nas bases de dados Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Scientific Eletronic Library Online, Sportdiscus, através da plataforma EBSCOhost e Pubmed. Rastreou-se 89.553 artigos, dos quais 69.197 foram excluídos por duplicidade, 20.124 pelo título, 160 pelo resumo, 56 após análise integral do artigo e restaram 16 para a análise qualitativa. Destes, a partir da leitura das referências foram identificados 57 títulos parcialmente elegíveis para a revisão, após a aplicação dos critérios de elegibilidade restaram apenas 18 para a análise qualitativa. Dos 34 estudos inclusos para a análise qualitativa, 25 foram excluídos e nove estudos foram incluídos na revisão. Todos os artigos apresentaram delineamento transversal e utilizaram o teste de sentar e alcançar para avaliar a flexibilidade. Ficou evidenciado que: a) a flexibilidade tem sido tratada como coadjuvante nos estudos com crianças e adolescentes; b) embora o sexo feminino tenha valores absolutos de flexibilidade maiores que o sexo oposto, o sexo masculino tem maior frequência de sujeitos que atingem os critérios de classificação de saúde, nesta variável; c) há uma maior prevalência do uso dos padrões de referência do FITNESSGRAM e da PROESP-BR.

The registration or insertion of older adults in Community Physical Activity Programs does not guarantee their stay over time. The purpose of this study was to analyze the length of stay of elderly in a Community Physical Activity Program and associated factors. This epidemiologic observational study of retrospective cohort performed in Aracaju City, Brazil, included a sample of 526 older adults (477 females) aged 66.4 ± 5.4 years. To characterize the profile and length of stay of individuals, descriptive statistics was used. To analyze the length of stay, the Kaplan-Meier non-parametric survival, estimator was used. To verify the association between variables in the observed time, the Cox regression model was applied. Inverse ratio equation (1/OR) was used to facilitate the understanding of significant values when necessary. In all analyses, 95% confidence interval and p≤0.05 were used. In the first three months, stay rate of 58.1% (95% CI = 54.6 - 61.3) was observed, with a risk estimative = 41.82%. Females presented a 45% chance of stay (OR = 0.69; 95% CI = 0.51 – 0.93) and individuals identified with osteoporosis had 32% more chances of stay (OR = 0.74, 95% CI, = 0.60-0.91). Only 1% of subjects remained until the end of the cohort. The stay rate was low throughout all series; the period with higher quitting rates was the 3rd and the 12th months, being associated with the female stay sex and undiagnosed osteoporosis.

O objetivo do estudo foi estimar o tempo de permanência de participantes em um Programa Comunitário de Atividade Física (PCAF). Trata-se de uma coorte retrospectiva em que foi estimada a permanência de 727 participantes (55,16+11,78 anos) estratificados em três grupamentos etários (Grupo 1: 18 a 35 anos; Grupo 2: 36 a 59 anos; Grupo 3: acima dos 60 anos) de um PCAF através da observação às avaliações realizadas pelo programa no período de 26,5 meses. Aplicou-se a Análise de Sobrevivência pelo método de Kaplan Meier para analisar o tempo de permanência dos participantes e Log-Rank para estimar a permanência em relação às faixas etárias consideradas no estudo. Utilizou-se nível de significância de 5% em todas as análises. A média do tempo de permanência dos participantes foi de 16+7.9 meses. Dos 727 participantes somente seis (0,08%) permaneceram durante toda a coorte. A maior desistência (68%) foi percebida no primeiro ano do PCAF. Quando observados os grupamentos etários verificou-se diferença estatisticamente significativa (p=0,025) entre o tempo de permanência dos mesmos, sendo que os indivíduos do Grupo 1, com média de permanência de 12,4± 6,2 meses, não permaneceram após o 20º mês no programa e a permanência para os outros dois grupos foi de 16±7,9 meses. O tempo máximo de permanência dos participantes no programa foi de aproximadamente dois anos, com desistência de maioria dos participantes até o primeiro ano e maior permanência dos sujeitos adultos e idosos.

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to evaluate the acute resistance exercise on glucose metabolism in animals with insulin resistance. 30 Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control (CON), Dexamethasone Sedentary (DS) and dexamethasone + exercise (DE). Resistance exercise was conducted in the squat machine consisting of five sets, 10 repetitions, with intensity of 70% of 1RM. Concurrently, the DS and DE groups received daily intraperitoneal dexamethasone (4.0mg / kg). The body weight, glycemia and insulin sensitivity test were measured in all groups. One single resistance exercise session reduced blood glucose levels and improved insulin sensitivity. The DT group showed a lower area under the curve when compared to the DS group. The high intensity acute resistance exercise promoted a reduction of blood glucose levels and improved insulin sensitivity in rats with insulin resistance dexamethasone- induced.

Abstract Although sickle cell anemia (SCA) is related to inflammation, the profile of inflammatory markers in sickle cell trait (SCT) is poorly studied. This is a cross‐sectional study of inflammatory biomarkers carried out involving adults with SCA in steady state, SCT and controls. The SCA group had higher levels of lactato dehydrogenase, IL‐1β, IL‐6, IL‐10, and tumor necrosis factor alpha than the others, while the SCT group had similar levels to control group. In addition, SCA group had lower IL‐8/IL‐10 and soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells‐1/IL‐10 ratios. These findings indicate that individuals with SCT do not have a chronic inflammatory profile and reinforce that cytokines are involved in the maintenance of the inflammatory state in SCA.

In judo combat, the approach and gripping phases play a crucial role in determining victory, and it is believed that they can be influenced by the current rules. The objective of this study was to compare the technical-tactical actions executed by female judokas in the approach and gripping subphases during international competitions held in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic cycles, which featured different rules. We analyzed 1332 combat videos from the top 20 female judo athletes in the world rankings. These videos were equally distributed across weight divisions in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic cycles (48 kg = 132; 52 kg = 72; 57 kg = 109; 63 kg = 96; 70 kg = 69; 78 kg = 106; >78 kg = 82; total = 666 combats per cycle). This study compared the time of female judo combat phases in international competitions between two Olympic cycles (2016; 2020) according to weight divisions (48 kg = 132; 52 kg = 72; 57 kg = 109; 63 kg = 96; 70 kg = 69; 78 kg = 106; >78 kg = 82; total = 666 combats/cycle). The behaviors of 1,332 high-level female judo combats were randomly observed over two Olympic cycles (2016 = 666; 2020 = 666) from the top 20 athletes in the world ranking by weight division. We performed time-motion analysis according to the combat phase and sequential judo actions (approach, gripping, attack, defense, groundwork, pause, and effort: pause ratio) considering the moment when the combat ended (Regular time = RT; Golden score = GS). ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Although there is a growing body of research pointing towards the need to investigate how different movement behaviors, such as physical activity and sleep, influence each other, the joint relationship between these factors and insomnia has been little explored among adolescents in developing countries. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between daily physical activity and insomnia in a national sample of Brazilian adolescents, according to the Human Development Index (HDI) of each Brazilian region. DESIGN AND SETTINGS: Cross-sectional study on 102,072 Brazilian students aged 11 to 19 years, selected from all regions of the country. METHODS: Information on insomnia and physical activity was self-reported by adolescents. RESULTS: Our analyses revealed that girls who accumulated at least 60 minutes/day of physical activity on up to three days/week were less prone to present insomnia. This pattern of association was maintained only for those who lived in high HDI regions (odds ratio, 0.87; 95% confidence interval, 0.75-0.99). For boys, there was a positive association between the number of active days and protection against insomnia, especially for those who lived in high HDI regions. CONCLUSION: Even amounts of physical activity that were lower than the weekly guidelines, were associated with better sleep quality for Brazilian adolescents, especially girls, and even for those who lived in regions with greater social and economic vulnerability.

O objetivo do estudo foi identificar as estruturas para atividades físicas (AF) nas escolas brasileiras e relacioná-las ao Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH), Índice de Desenvolvimento da Educação Básica (IDEB) e indicadores de qualidade do Report Card Brasil (RCB). Trata-se de estudo descritivo que utilizou dados secundários do INEP-Brasil para a identificação e classificação da estrutura para prática de AF nas escolas brasileiras, a partir da existência de “pátio”, “quadras” e “materiais esportivos”, organizadas por escolas do nível “fundamental” e “médio”. Objetivou-se identificar a evidência quanto às associações entre atividade física (AF) e saúde mental (SM) em adolescentes escolarizados brasileiros. Trata-se de um estudo de Revisão Sistemática. Os estudos foram selecionados em português e inglês e identificados por meio de uma busca sistemática em seis bases de dados eletrônicas: PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus/Ebsco, ScIELO, ERIC, e LILACS, que compreendeu publicações até o final de 2019. Os critérios de inclusão foram: estudos com um desenho de coorte, descritivo de caráter exploratório, transversal, ou qualitativos; realizados com crianças e adolescentes; estudos que analisaram a relação entre AF e SM; estudos que investigaram adolescentes que praticavam AF nas escolas; estudos realizados no Brasil e os que obtiveram a pontuação mínima estabelecida de 60% conforme os critérios da qualidade metodológica do instrumento STROBE. A Educação Física oferecida no currículo da educação básica tem um efeito protetor sobre a SM no ambiente escolar. Além disso, mais de 300 min/semana de AF foi associado positivamente com a SM. Algumas associações foram negativas entre a AF e a SM, tais como: tempo excessivo de TV; isolamento social; insatisfação com o peso corporal. A AF escolar está associada positivamente à SM por promover bem-estar físico e psicológico, impactando na redução dos índices de problema de insônia, atenuando a solidão e melhorando a aparência física.

Para avaliar o risco cardiovascular em adultos jovens, a comunidade científica tem utilizado indicadores antropométricos, os quais têm sido relacionados ao Nível de Atividade Física. Objetivo: Identificar as variáveis relacionadas ao nível de atividade física em estudantes de Educação Física de uma universidade do interior do Estado da Bahia. Método: A amostra foi selecionada por conveniência, sendo 41 estudantes (53% do sexo masculino) com média de idade de 22,31(4,20) anos. Os indivíduos foram divididos em “Ingressantes” e “Concluintes”. O IPAQ versão curta foi utilizado para averiguar o NAF, os dados antropométricos coletados foram: Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC); Circunferência Abdominal; Razão Cintura-Quadril; Percentual de gordura; Peso gordo. Abstract Aim: This study aimed to examine the association between physical activity (PA) indicators and TV viewing as a function of the Human Development Index (HDI). Method: This cross-sectional study was based on data from the National School Health Survey, which was composed of 102,072 students (14.28±1.03; 51.3% girls). Total PA, active commuting to school (ACS) and TV viewing were assessed by questionnaires and classified through a gradual scale ranging from “F” (low) to “A+” (high). The correlation between total PA, ACS, TV viewing and HDI was verified by Spearman’s Correlation and presented in rs. Results: HDI was positively associated with total PA [girls: rs = 0.572 (p < 0.001); boys: rs = 0.843 (p < 0.001)] and ACS [girls: rs = 0.433 (p < 0.001); boys: rs = 0.554 (p < 0.001)]; while a negative correlation was found between HDI and TV viewing [girls: rs = -0.330 (p < 0.001); boys: rs = -0.348 (p < 0.001)]. Conclusions: Brazilian adolescents from states with higher HDI were more active and spent more time watching TV than their counterparts from states with lower HDI.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors associated with negative Health Perception and Quality of Life (QoL) of older adults. This was a cross-sectional study composed of 224 older adults with a median age of 70.58±6.43 years old. A questionnaire was designed to incorporate ABEP (socioeconomic questionnaire), WHOQOL-BREF, IPAQ, and Senior Fitness Test (SFT). Binary logistic regression with p>0.05, organized in univariate and multivariate models in SPSS version 22. Variables upper extremities poor flexibility OR = 2.43 (1.37 – 4.31) and lower extremities poor flexibility OR = 2.69 (1.54 – 4.69) were significantly associated with negative health perception. Being not financial responsible OR= 0.33 (0.12 – 0.85) presented lower odds of negative QoL perception. The variable Lower extremities poor flexibility univariate OR= 2.52 (1.45 – 4.39) and multivariate model OR= 2.42 (1.38 – 4.24) showed almost three times higher probabilities of negative QoL perception.

Avaliar a relação do nível de atividade física com o perfil antropométrico, percepção de qualidade de vida e saúde mental em policiais militares do Estado de Sergipe (PM/SE). Estudo transversal que contou com 30 policiais militares do sexo masculino, com idade entre 28 a 40 anos. Utilizaram o pedômetro durante quatro dias, posteriormente responderam questionários sobre: Dados Demográficos, Antropométricos e Ocupacionais; IPAQ versão curta; WHOQOL; Escala de Ansiedade, Depressão e Estresse. Apresentaram, prevalência de policiais ativos (70%) e não apresentam sintomas para problemas que afetem a saúde mental. 66,67% relataram boa percepção e qualidade de vida e 70% estavam satisfeitos com sua saúde. The objective of the present study was to analyse the association between the level of physical activity and mental health indicators in this population. A total of 254 military police officers, male and female, aged between 21 and 55, participated in military battleships and police companies in the metropolitan region of Aracaju, Sergipe. They responded to an assessment form, available online, on Google Forms, containing questions about socio-demographic, anthropometric and occupational characteristics, quality of sleep (Pittsburgh scale), stress (EPS-10), anxiety and depression (HAD scale), Exhaustion syndrome (MBI - GS), suicidal ideation (YRBSS - adapted), and Physical Activity level (IPAQ-short). Officers classified as “insufficiently active” had a higher risk for “burnout syndrome” (OR = 2.49; CI: 95% 1.42-4.43) and a greater feeling of “deep sadness” (OR = 1.85; CI: 95% 1.03-3.33) compared with physically active colleagues. In addition, longer service time was a protective factor against anxiety (OR = 0.30; CI: 95% 0.13-0.68), burnout syndrome (OR = 0.28; CI: 95% 0.12 -0.67) and deep sadness (OR = 0.25; CI: 95% 0.11-0.57). Older officers are more likely to be affected by “deep sadness” (OR = 2.80; CI: 95% 1.37-5.71). It was concluded that physical activity is associated with changes in the mental health of the police officers evaluated.

O objetivo desse estudo foi analisar a associação entre as características antropométricas, ocupacionais, nível de atividade física e à ideação suicida em policiais militares de Aracaju e Região Metropolitana, Brasil. Participaram do estudo 254 policiais militares ativos do sexo masculino e feminino, com idade entre 21 e 55 anos. Os dados foram coletados através do Formulários Google, contendo questões sobre características sociodemográficas, antropométricas, ocupacionais e comportamentos de risco. Foi realizada estatística descritiva com média, desvio padrão, frequência absoluta, relativa e para os casos específicos, análise de regressão logística binária. Policiais militares com menos tempo de serviço tinham quatro vezes mais chances de apresentar tristeza profunda nos últimos 12 meses (OR = 0,22; 95% IC 0,09-0,51), e policiais mais velhos três vezes mais chances (OR = 3,12; 95% IC 1,64-7.97). Policiais que trabalhavam em turnos do dia alternados, apresentaram quatro vezes mais chances de ter planejado suicídio nos últimos 12 meses (OR = 4,67; 95% IC 1,08-20,16), e policiais com menos tempo de serviço apresentaram sete vezes mais chances (OR = 0,13; 95% IC 0,26-0,64). É observado que as características laborais estão associadas a ideação suicida. Também é percebido que à atividade física é um fator de proteção contra tristeza profunda.

Abstract Aims: 1) to identify the prevalence of active commuting to school (ACS) among Brazilian regions; and 2) to determine associated factors related to ACS in this population. Methods: Cross-sectional study comprising 16,493 adolescents (mean age 14.09±2.12 years). The data comes from the National School Health Survey (2015), and the information was collected by a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression models were performed to identify correlates of ACS. Results: Adolescents who live in the Southeast are more prone to have ACS compared to those who live in other regions. Do not have motor vehicles been positively associated with ACS [girls: 2.04 (1.72;2.42); boys 1.85(1.63;2.10)]. Those whom self-reported white was less prone to have ACS compared to their peers from other ethnicities. Those enrolled in private schools [girls: 0.43(0.34;0.54); boys (0.45(0.39;0.53)] and schools setting in rural area [girls: 0.38(0.25;0.57); boys: 0.51(0.37;71)] are less prone to show ACS. In addition, adolescents who accumulated less active time during physical education classes [girls: 0.80(0.66;0.97)] and extracurricular shifts [boys: 0.69(0.60;0.80)] were less prone to have an ACS, compared to their most active peers. Lastly, girls who spent ≤ 2 hours presented fewer odds to have an ACS [0.75(0.63;0.90)]. Conclusions: ACS was most prevalent among those who live in the Southeast region and seems to be negativity associated with the socioeconomic level. Moreover, less active adolescents during both school and leisure time may be more prone to have passive travel go/from school.

The present study aimed to verify the contribution of different physical activity domains to “total physical activity” in Brazilian adolescents. This is a cross-sectional study using secondary data from the third edition of the National School Health Survey - PeNSE, 2015. The sample consisted of 100,497 adolescents of both sexes enrolled in the 9th grade of elementary schools. A linear regression model was used to verify how much each domain contributed to total physical activity, considering gender, type of municipality and region. The domain with the largest contribution to “total physical activity” regardless of sociodemographic and environmental variables was “extra-school physical activity” (R2 = 0.60), followed by “active commuting” (R2 = 0.34), and finally “Physical Education classes” (R2 = 0.23). The contribution of the different domains varied by gender, type of municipality and region, and it was concluded that “extra-school physical activity” make the greatest contribution to “total physical activity”, followed by “active commuting” and “Physical Education classes”. In addition, variation was observed in the contribution of domains by gender, type of municipality and region.

Aging comprises a dynamic and progressive process, characterized by physiological and functional changes. Among these changes, increase in body fat is considered relevant, since it can leads to impaired physical fitness and augmented cardiometabolic risks. Considering this, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of overweight on functional capacity of physically active older women. A field survey was performed with 24 older women who practiced physical exercise. Participants were submitted to anamnesis, anthropometric measures (i.e., body mass and height); the Senior Fitness test; sit and reach flexibility test; and handgrip strength test. Pearson’s correlation test and multivariate logistic regression were used to verify the association between overweight and functional capacity. It was observed that hip flexibility (R=-0.494, p=0.014) and flexibility of the lower limbs (i.e., sit and reach test) showed negative correlation with the body mass index (R=-0.446, p=0.02); and after the multivariate logistic regression, negative correlation of lower limbs flexibility (B= -0,035, p=0,014) and the body mass index was observed. Thus, higher the body mass index among participants, lower hip flexibility they presented.

The aim of this study was to verify the association between school environment and accumulated physical activity in Brazilian adolescents. This is a study with secondary data from sample 1, from the third edition of the National School Health Survey, a study carried out with 102.072 children and adolescents enrolled in the ninth school grade. Questions about characteristics of the school environment and the offer of opportunities for physical activity practices were addressed, focusing on information regarding the structure for physical activity and about the regular practice of accumulated physical activities. Variables were organized from the structure of schools and opportunities for the practice of physical activities, while accumulated physical activity was used as the outcome variable. Data were analyzed from a binary logistic regression model, organized in crude and adjusted models, with a significance level of 5%. Data were analyzed from SPSS for Windows, version 22.0. Results indicate that, from the adjustment of variables, there was an association between the practice of accumulated physical activity and the existence of a sports court under conditions of use (OR=1.22, 95%CI=1.18-1.26), or presence of courtyard for use of physical education classes (OR=1.04, 95%CI=1.01-1.06). Association between the offer of varied physical activities, except for physical education classes, and the practice of accumulated physical activity (OR=1.05, 95%CI=1.02-1.08) was identified. Existence of a sports court/courtyard in schools and the offer of extracurricular physical activities are associated with the practice of accumulated physical activity in young Brazilian students.

O 3º Congresso Internacional de Atividade Física, Nutrição e Saúde proporcionou discussão, reflexão e prática acerca das bases teórico-metodológicas dirigidas às intervenções na área de Atividade Física, Nutrição e Saúde. Reflexões sobre o processo de envelhecimento, bem como os aspetos do envelhecer com saúde e qualidade de vida foram abordados no evento. O envelhecimento é um fenômeno natural, universal, irreversível e não ocorre de forma simultânea e igualitária nos seres humanos. Envelhecer faz parte da vida e, visto a luz dos conhecimentos atuais, nada é possível para fazer alterar este processo. Atualmente, o envelhecimento constitui um dos temas de maior interesse da sociedade devido à transição epidemiológica que o mundo está apresentando. Diante disso, procurar respostas sobre quais são as mudanças que ocorrem nesse período, quais são as causas e as consequências são os desafios da ciência com o objetivo de retardar esse processo. Para melhor compreensão da relação entre envelhecimento e saúde, uma abordagem multidimensional deve ser considerada, levando em consideração os aspectos biológicos, físicos, psicológicos, econômicos e sociais. Além disso, a qualidade de vida passa a ser um aspecto importante por atender as demandas de saúde da sociedade. Tais discussões realizadas servirão para subsidiar uma análise crítica sobre a atuação dos profissionais da saúde, no Brasil e no Estado de Sergipe. É inadiável, portanto, que os acadêmicos e os professores de todas as áreas do conhecimento, conscientizem-se de que é necessário atualização e capacitação constante.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between low levels of physical activity and consumption of fruits and vegetables among adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 2,057 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years from the city of Aracaju, Northeastern Brazil. We analyzed the level of physical activity, consumption of fruits and vegetables by standardized and validated questionnaires. The control variables were sex, age, socioeconomic status, maternal education, alcohol consumption and smoking. For data analysis, univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: The prevalence of low levels of physical activity was 81.9%; the inadequate consumption of fruits ocurred in 79.1% and the inadequate consumption of vegetables in 90.6%. Adolescents who consumed few fruits daily had an increase in 40% of chance of being insufficiently active and, for those who consumed few vegetable's the likelihood of being insufficiently active was 50% higher, compared to those who had adequate intake of these foods. CONCLUSIONS: Low levels of physical activity were associated with inadequate fruit and vegetable intake among adolescents in a city in northeastern Brazil. These findings suggest that insufficiently active adolescents have other unhealthy behaviors that may increase the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood.

Design. The social, cultural, and economic context can be an important variable in the perception and adoption of risk behaviors in adolescents. Objective. The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of simultaneous health risk behaviors and associated socioeconomic factors in adolescents living in the metropolitan region of Aracaju, State of Sergipe, Brazil. Methods. The sample consisted of 2,207 high school students aged 13–18 years. The risk behaviors measured were “low levels of physical activity,” “excessive daily TV time,” “high consumption of alcoholic beverages on a single occasion,” “involvement in fights,” “smoking cigarettes,” “carrying firearms,” and “marijuana consumption.” Information was obtained through self-administered questionnaire. Results. Considering the results, it was observed that female adolescents and those aged up to 16 years were less likely to have two or more health risk behaviors compared to males and those aged 17 years or more, respectively. It was also found that both high- and middle-income level adolescents had higher prevalence of having two or more health risk behaviors. Conclusions. It was concluded that male adolescents older than 16 years with better socioeconomic level were more exposed to the simultaneous presence of several health risk behaviors.

Níveis de aptidão aeróbica de crianças e adolescentes estão declinando em todo o mundo, enquadrando-se em risco para a saúde. No Brasil, aproximadamente, 60% dos escolares apresentam níveis de aptidão cardiorrespiratória abaixo do recomendado para a idade e sexo. O objetivo foi verificar a influência da maturação sexual e do nível de atividade física na aptidão cardiorrespiratória em escolares de ambos os sexos com idade de 9 a 14 anos. O estudo foi transversal com amostra composta por 747 indivíduos (47,12% do sexo feminino) e idade de 9 a 14 anos, matriculados na rede pública de ensino. Os indivíduos responderam o PAQ-C e o questionário sobre maturação sexual, além de participarem do shuttle run test. Para verificar a influência no VO2máx,os participantes foram categorizados em pré-púberes, púberes e pós-púberes e de acordo com o sexo e a interação (sexo vsmaturação). Foi utilizada a ANOVA para comparar as médias dos estágios de maturação e para avaliar se o sexo e a maturação afetavam o VO2máx. Houve influência da maturação (p < 0,0001; Eta2= 0,069; power = 1) e do sexo (p < 0,0001; Eta2 = 0,059; power = 1) na aptidão aeróbica. O VO2máxentre os estágios de maturação foi diferente entre os sexos. A maturação influenciou o VO2máx com tendência decrescente e linear (p < 0,0001; Eta2= 0,221; power = 1) para o sexo feminino. Verificou-se influência da maturação e do nível de atividade física na aptidão cardiorrespiratória em escolares da cidade de Aracaju.

The aim of this study was to verify the reliability of selected variables during Wingate anaerobic test, physiologic markers and perceptual associated in trained cyclists. Fifteen male cyclists performed three tests, with workload of 0.087 times the body mass. Measures of peak power, average power, minimum power, fatigue index, heart rate, perceived effort and lactate concentration were collected. It was verified data normality, applied ANOVA One Way repeated with Tukey as post-hoc test, intraclass coefficient correlation and Bland Altman test. Results showed no significant different for the peak power, fatigue index, lactate concentration, heart rate and perceived effort between tests. Of these, peak power, heart rate and perceived effort high and significant intraclass correlation scores were found (.797−.975). Also, peak power showed good agreement between tests. In conclusion, the Wingate anaerobic test showed high reliability for peak power, heart rate and perceived effort in recreational cyclists.

Objetivou-se verificar a associação entre a prática de futebol com fatores sociodemográficos em escolares. A amostra foi composta por 906 estudantes de escolas públicas de Aracaju, Sergipe, Brasil, com média de 15,11 (DP=2,19) anos de idade. Utilizou-se a regressão de Poisson para o cálculo da razão de prevalência (RP) e intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC95%). Dos estudantes investigados, 49,1% não praticavam futebol. Os escolares com maiores probabilidades de não praticar futebol foram os do sexo feminino (RP: 3,28; IC95%: 2,59-4,15) e do ensino médio (RP: 1,45; IC95%: 1,10-1,92). Quase metade dos estudantes não pratica futebol e, independente da faixa etária e nível econômico, em estudantes do sexo feminino e do ensino médio a probabilidade de prática na modalidade é ainda menor.

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito o exercício resistido agudo sobre o metabolismo glicêmico em animais com resistência à insulina induzidos com dexametasona. Foram utilizados 30 ratos Wistar divididos em três grupos: Controle (CON), Dexametasona Sedentário (DS) e Dexametasona + Exercício (DE). O exercício resistido foi realizado no aparelho de agachamento composto por cinco séries, 10 repetições, com intensidade de 70% de 1RM. Concomitantemente, os grupos DS e DE recebiam diariamente dexametasona intraperitoneal (4,0mg/kg). Foram aferidos o peso corporal, a glicemia e o teste de sensibilidade à insulina de todos os grupos. Única sessão de exercício resistido reduziu a glicemia e melhorou a sensibilidade à insulina, o grupo DT apresentou menor área sob a curva em relação ao grupo DS. O exercício resistido agudo de alta intensidade promoveu redução da glicemia e melhorou a sensibilidade da insulina em ratos com resistência a insulina induzidos com dexametasona. Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a associação entre fatores da condição socioeconômica com a inatividade física, comportamento sedentário e excesso de peso corporal em jovens. A amostra deste estudo foi composta por 758 sujeitos, retirada da população de jovens em condição de alistamento militar. As variáveis independentes do estudo foram: classe econômica, estado civil, escolaridade, ser trabalhador. A inatividade física, exposição ao comportamento sedentário e excesso de peso corporal foram utilizados como variáveis dependentes. Após ajuste, verificou-se associação entre a inatividade física e os indicadores de condição econômica escolaridade (RP = 1,42; IC 95% = 1,00-2,01) e ser trabalhador (RP = 1,67; IC = 95% 1,21-2,32). O excesso de peso corporal associou-se com as classes econômicas "C" (RP = 2,60; IC 95% = 1,40-4,84) e "D/E" (RP = 2,08; IC 95% = 1,26-3,44). Conclui-se que jovens com maior escolaridade e que não trabalhavam foram mais inativos fisicamente e que os que estavam em menor condição econômica mostraram-se com excesso de peso corporal.Este estudio tiene como objetivo verificar la asociación entre los factores socioeconómicos con inactividad física, el sedentarismo y el sobrepeso en los jóvenes. La muestra de este estudio consistió de 758 sujetos, la retirada de la población joven en situación de alistamiento militar. Las variables independientes del estudio fueron: clase económica, estado civil, educación, ser trabajador. La inactividad física, el sedentarismo y la exposición al exceso de peso se utilizaron como la variable dependiente. Después del ajuste, compruebe COU una asociación entre la inactividad física y los indicadores de la educación la situación económica (RP = 1,42, IC 95% = 1,00 a 2,01) y de ser un trabajador (RP = 1,67, IC del 95%: 1,21 a 2,32). El exceso de peso se asocia con las clases económicas "C" (RP = 2,60, IC 95% = 1,40 a 4,84) y "D / E" (RP = 2,08, IC 95% = 1,26 a 3,44). Se llegó a la conclusión de que los jóvenes con más educación y que no estaban empleadas eran más inactivos físicamente y los que estaban mostraron una menor afección económica con exceso de peso corporal.The purpose of this study was to verify the association between socioeconomic factors and physical activity, sedentary behavior and overweight in youth. The sample was composed of 758 subjects from the population of initial military service . The independent variables were: socioeconomic class, marital status, educational level, and be worker. Physical Inactivity, exposures to sedentary behavior and be overweight were used as dependent variables. After adjustment, it was verified an association between physical inactivity and the indicators of economic status: education level (PR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.00 to 2.01) and be worker (PR = 1.67, CI95% =1.21 to 2.32). Overweight was associated with economic class "C" (PR = 2.60, 95% CI = 1.40 to 4.84) and "D/E" (PR = 2.08, CI95% = 1.26 to 3.44). It is concluded that youth with higher education level and not employed were more physically inactive. It was showed association between lower economic status and excess body weight.

OBJETIVO: Analisar os fatores associados à percepção negativa de saúde em idosos brasileiros. MÉTODOS: Estudo de base populacional com delineamento transversal realizado no ano de 2009, em três cidades do Brasil. A amostra estratificada de forma aleatória simples foi composta de 909 adultos de 60 a 91 anos. Na identificação dos fatores associados com a percepção negativa de saúde (PNS), foi realizada análise bruta e mutivariável por estimativas das Razões de Prevalência (RP), por meio da regressão de Poisson; p < 0.05. RESULTADOS: A prevalência para PNS foi de 49,6%, e após análise multivariada foi observado associação para os homens com o aumento da idade RP = 1,03 (IC = 1,01 - 1,06), risco de desnutrição RP = 1,66 (IC = 1,13 - 2,43) e incapacidade funcional RP = 1,79 (IC = 1,21-1,77). Para as mulheres, o uso superior a dois medicamentos RP = 1,41 (IC = 1,13 - 2,52), hipertensão arterial RP = 1,52 (IC = 1,43 - 1,97) e a incapacidade funcional RP = 1,36 (IC = 1,13 - 1,86). CONCLUSÕES: Quase a metade dos idosos possuem uma PNS, de maneira que ações preventivas de diminuição ao uso de medicamentos e comportamentos que favoreçam melhores condições nutricionais devem estar atreladas às políticas públicas à promoção da autonomia funcional e do bem-estar dos idosos.OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors associated with negative health perception in older Brazilians. METHODS: Population study of a cross-sectional sample, conducted in 2009 in three cities of Brazil. The stratified simple random sample consisted of 909 adults between 60 and 91 years of age. A gross and multivariate analysis by estimated prevalence rate (PR) using Poisson regression with calculation of adjusted prevalence ratios, p < 0.05 was performed to identify factors associated with negative perception of health (NPH). RESULTS: The prevalence of NPH was 49.6%. After the multivariate association, a certain association for men with older age PR = 1.03 (Cl = 1.01 to 1.06), risk of malnutrition PR = 1.66 (CI = 1.13 to 2.43) and disability PR = 1.79 (CI = 1.21 to 1.77) was observed. For women, the association was with taking more than two medications PR = 1.41 (CI = 1.13 to 2.52), hypertension PR = 1.52 (CI = 1.43 to 1.97) and functional disability PR = 1.36 (CI = 1.13 to 1.86). CONCLUSIONS: Nearly half of the elderly have NHP, therefore preventive actions that decrease drug use and encourage behaviors toward better nutritional conditions should be tied to public policies in order to promote the functional independence and well-being of the elderly.

Objetivou-se analisar o estilo de vida de acadêmicos de Educação Física de uma universidade pública do estado de Sergipe, Brasil. A amostra probabilística foi de 217 alunos da Universidade Federal de Sergipe com 20,6 (±3,1) anos de idade, sendo 105 da licenciatura e 112 do bacharelado. Da amostra analisada, 3,3% (IC95%: 0,9-1,6) apresentou um estilo de vida inadequado. A maior parte dos alunos, 57,4% (IC95%: 50,7-64,0), não atendeu as recomendações para atividade física. Estudantes da licenciatura estavam mais inadequados que os do bacharelado no conjunto do estilo de vida global e nas condutas de sono, cinto de segurança, estresse e sexo seguro. Os achados contribuem para que a universidade elabore campanhas e programas de extensão no campus para promoção do estilo de vida saudável.

Objetivou-se verificar a prevalência do sedentarismo no recreio escolar e fatores sociodemográficos associados em estudantes do ensino fundamental e médio da rede estadual de Aracaju, Sergipe. Informações sociodemográficas e de atividade física (AF) no recreio foram coletadas por meio de questionários em uma amostra de 973 estudantes. Os estudantes foram classificados, de acordo com o padrão de AF no recreio, como “sedentários” e “ativos”. As características da amostra indicaram que a maior parte era do sexo feminino (56,9%), de nível econômico médio (59,9%), cursava o ensino fundamental (50,1%) e era constituída de alunos sedentários no recreio (58,2%). Os grupos de alunos com maiores probabilidades de sedentarismo foram o sexo feminino (RP:1,37; IC95%:1,16-1,63) e os do ensino médio (RP:1,40; IC95%:1,18-1,65). Observou-se que mais da metade era sedentária no recreio e que, independentemente do nível econômico, os estudantes do sexo feminino e do ensino médio são os grupos com maiores probabilidades de apresentar tal comportamento.

The objective of this study was to determine the physical activity level (PAL) and sedentary behavior of students from the city of Aracaju (SE). A total of 1028 students of both genders participated in the study, with a mean age of 15.38 (2.44) years for girls and 15.24 (2.40) years for boys. Among the sample, 24.7% were children and 75.3% were adolescents, with a mean age of 12.07 (0.88) and 16.39 (1.72) years, respectively. An instrument already used in Brazilian studies was applied to identify the average time (hours) watching TV per day (hTV) and PAL – PAQ-C. Descriptive statistics, t-test for independent samples, Fisher’s exact test and comparison test between two proportions were used for data analysis, with the level of significance set at 5% (p≤0.05). Boys presented a significantly higher physical activity score 2.25 (0.60) than girls. The prevalence of sedentarism was 72.5, 89.3 and 85.2% in the groups of children and adolescents and in the group as a whole, respectively, for girls, and 55.4, 74.8 and 69.8% for boys. No differences in hTV were observed between genders or between sedentary and physically active students (p > 0.05). We conclude that a) there is a high prevalence of “sedentary” and “very sedentary” children and adolescents; b) boys present a higher PAL than girls; c) adolescents are less active than children, and d) the number of hTV is high in the group studied.

The objective of this study was to analyze the maximum oxygen uptake of children and adolescents during puberty. The study enrolled 779 children and adolescents of both sexes from Cotinguiba, SE, Brazil, 404 of whom were female and 379 of whom were male. Measurements were taken of weight, height and skin folds. Body fat percentage and lean body mass. Sexual maturity stages were established by self-assessment, based on appearance of pubic hair. The children's VO2max was estimated from the results of a 20 meter shuttle-run test. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and analysis of variance (p²0.05). The results suggest that absolute VO2max (l/min) increases progressively in both sexes as maturity advances. Significant differences between sexes are observed from maturity stage P3 onwards. The aim of this study was to analyze the variables that evidence growth characteristics in children and adolescents from Northeast Area of Brazil and to compare with other national and international studies. The main results showed that, for the stature, in both genders, the curves presented an ascending tendency with similar values. For the body mass, the curves from the Northeastern Brazil showed similar values as well, while the NCHS curves presented higher values. The same behavior was observed for BMI. RESUMO A monitorização do crescimento pode ser considerada como um dos mais importantes indicadores quanto à qualidade de vida de um país, ou a extensão das distorções existentes em uma mesma população em seus diferentes subgrupos. O Objetivo do presente foi analisar o comportamento de variáveis que possam evidenciar as características de crescimento em crianças e adolescentes da Região Nordeste do Brasil e comparar com outros estudos nacionais e internacionais. Para a análise foram utilizadas tabelas normativas construídas a partir das pesquisas de Silva (2002), Silva Júnior (1998), INAN (1989) e NCHS (2002). Verificou-se que, para a estatura, em ambos os gêneros, as curvas analisadas apresentam uma tendência ascendente com valores muito próximos entre si. Para a massa corporal pôde-se perceber que as curvas dos estados nordestinos apresentam valores próximos entre si, enquanto a curva do NCHS tem valores mais expressivos, ocorrendo o mesmo comportamento para o IMC.

This article discusses physical capacity and health-promotion-oriented motor tests in children and adolescents, in order to provide a foundation for future studies that intend to debate this topic. The idea of evaluating physical activity levels in a population is aimed to determine the level of physical fi tness, and to verify that this is in line with criteria for good health. From a functional point of view, .good health is defined by the following components: body composition (not considered in this article), strength, muscular endurance capacity and fl exibility. These components are measured by test batteries that are intended to measure the health of individuals and/or populations. The starting point for this debate is the published reference literature that classifi es motor tests as either norm-referenced or criterion-referenced standards. RESUMO Este artigo discute as capacidades físicas e os testes motores voltados à promoção da saúde em crianças e adolescentes, de forma a subsidiar trabalhos em que este tema esteja em voga. A idéia de avaliar a atividade física em uma população é baseada no desejo de determinar o estado de atividade atual da mesma, e verifi car se ela está de acordo com os critérios apropriados para uma boa saúde. Do ponto de vista morfofuncional, uma boa “saúde relatada” é defi nida a partir dos componentes: composição corporal (não abordado neste trabalho), força e resistência muscular e fl exibilidade, componentes estes que são verifi cados a partir da aplicação de testes ou baterias de testes que pretendem medir e verifi car os níveis individuais e/ou populacionais de saúde relatada. A literatura de referência, que classifi ca os testes motores como referenciados a partir de normas ou critérios é o ponto de partida para esse debate.

Introduction. Several studies have pointed to the high prevalence of low levels of physical activity in adolescents, suggesting the need for more effective interventions for this group. The aim of this study was to present evidence of intervention programs for efficacy of physical activity for adolescents. Methods. Surveys in PubMed, SportDiscus, LiLacs, and SciELO databases were conducted using keywords to identify population, intervention, and outcome, as well as DeCS and MeSH terms in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, whenever appropriate. The review included observational studies with minimal intervention of six months, minimum sample size of 100 adolescents, written in any language, and those who have reached STROBE score greater than 70%. Results. Only seven studies met all inclusion criteria. Of these, five were pre- and postintervention and two had n>2000 participants. Interventions were of several types, durations, and strategies for physical activity implementation. Behavior change was assessed in 43% of studies and three reported success in some way. Conclusion. Due to heterogeneity in their contents and methodologies, as well as the lack of jobs that accompany adolescents after the intervention period, one cannot draw conclusions about the actual effects of the intervention programs of physical activity on the behavior of young people.

The aim of this study was to identify prevalence and factors associated with violent behavior among adolescents in Aracaju and Metropolitan region. The study included 2207 adolescents (16.03 ± 1.08 years old) enrolled in high schools of the State Public Network. Violent behavior was identified from question 14 of the YRBS-2007 questionnaire with responses categorized as “never” and “one or more times.” Higher prevalence in males in relation to risk factors for adoption of violent behavior was found: cigarette consumption (7.3%), alcohol consumption (39.1%), and marijuana use (3.4%). Data analysis used descriptive statistics and logistic regression with hierarchical model at two levels: (a) sociodemographic variables and (b) behavioral variables. For both sexes, association between violent behavior and cigarette smoking (OR = 3.77, CI 95% = 2.06–6.92 and OR = 1.99, CI 95% = 1.04 to 3.81, male and female, resp.) and alcohol consumption (OR = 3.38, CI 95% = 2.22 to 5.16 and OR = 1.83, CI 95% = 1.28 to 2.63, male and female, resp.) was verified. It was concluded that violent behavior is associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes among adolescents.

This study aimed to identify the prevalence and factors associated with suicidal ideation among Brazilian adolescents. The instrument designed for the research was used considering three models with outcomes that identified the following: (a) adolescent had considered suicide, (b) adolescents have planned suicide, and (c) adolescents have attempted suicide. Logistic Regression was used in all models with significance level of 5%. An association between being female and suicidal ideation (OR=2.18, CI 95% 1.60 to 2.97), suicide planning (OR=1.80, CI 95% = 1.26–2.56), and suicide attempt (OR=2.91, CI 95% 1.79 to 4.75) was found. Violent behavior/involvement in fights was associated with thinking about suicide (OR=2.00, CI 95% = 1.43 to 2.81), suicide planning (OR=1.65, CI 95% = 1.10–2.46), and suicide attempt (OR=2.35, CI 95% = 1.49 to 3.70). For cigarette consumption, association was found with suicide ideation (OR=1.62, CI 95% 1.03 to 2.55), planning (OR=1.88, CI 95% = 1.15 to 3.08), and attempt (OR=2.35, CI 95% 1.37 to 4.03). For alcohol consumption, association was found with suicide ideation (OR=1.93, CI 95% 1.47 to 2.54), planning (OR=2.22, CI 95% 1.61 to 3.08), and attempt (OR=1.73, CI 95% 1.15 to 2.59). It was concluded that suicidal ideation was associated with female sex, involvement in fights, and illicit drug use.

Objective. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of excess television time and verify correlated factors in adolescent males and females. Methods. This cross-sectional study included 2,105 adolescents aged from 13 to 18 years from the city of Aracaju, Northeastern Brazil. Television time was self-reported, corresponding to the time spent watching television in a typical week. Several correlates were examined including age, skin color, socioeconomic status, parent education, physical activity level, consumption of fruits and vegetables, smoking status, alcohol use, and sports team participation. Results. The prevalence excess television time (≥2 hours/day) in girls and boys was 70.9% and 66.2%, respectively. Girls with low socioeconomic status or inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables were more likely to have excess television time. Among boys, those >16 years of age or with black skin color were more likely to have excess television time. Conclusions. Excess television time was observed in more than two-thirds of adolescents, being more evident in girls. Correlated factors differed according to sex. Efforts to reduce television time among Brazilian adolescents, and replace with more active pursuits, may yield desirable public health benefits.
