We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign with the Multi-Object Double Spectrograph (MODS) instrument mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), aimed at obtaining a spectroscopic redshift for seven Chandra J1030 sources with a photometric redshift >=2.7 and optical magnitude r_AB=[24.5-26.5]. We obtained a spectroscopic redshift for five out of seven targets: all of them have z_spec>=2.5, thus probing the reliability of the Chandra J1030 photometric redshifts. The spectroscopic campaign led to the serendipitous discovery of a z~2.78 large scale structure (LSS) in the J1030 field: the structure contains four X-ray sources (three of which were targeted in the LBT-MODS campaign) and two non-X-ray detected galaxies for which a VLT-MUSE spectrum was already available. The X-ray members of the LSS are hosted in galaxies that are significantly more massive (log(M_*/M_sun)=[10.0-11.1]) than those hosting the two MUSE-detected sources (log(M_*/M_sun)10, are among the best tracers of large scale structures and filaments in the cosmic web. Consequently, our result can explain why X-ray-detected AGN have also been shown to be efficient tracers of large scale structures., 16 pages, 9 Figures. In my presentation, I review the expected performances of the Athena-WFI survey, with a particular focus on the high redshift Universe and the first SMBH science topic. I put these performances in the broader context of present and future missions and facilities in other wavelengths, from optical/IR large-area surveys to mm/sub-mm and radio observations. The unique capability of Athena-WFIto identify obscured sources up to very high redshift, where they are expected to be the vast majority of the AGN population and derive their intrinsic accretion properties,makes it competitive even with the rich landscape of the late '30s.

The distribution and properties of the first galaxies and quasars are critical pieces of the puzzle in understanding galaxy evolution and cosmic reionization. Previous studies have often excluded unresolved sources as potential low redshift interlopers. We combine broadband color and photometric redshift analysis with morphological selections to identify a robust sample of candidates consistent with unresolved point sources at redshift $z\sim8$ using deep Hubble Space Telescope images. We also examine G141 grism spectroscopic data to identify and eliminate dwarf star contaminants. From these analyses, we identify three, bright ($M_{UV}\lesssim-22$ ABmag) dropout point sources at $7.5, Comment: 21 pages. 10 figures

High-$z$ AGNs hosted in gas rich galaxies are expected to grow through significantly obscured accretion phases. This may limit or bias their observability. In this work, we use \textsc{BlueTides}, a large volume cosmological simulation of galaxy formation to examine quasar obscuration for the highest-redshift ($z \geq 7$) supermassive black holes residing in the center of galaxies. We find that for the bright quasars, most of the high column density gas ($>90\%$) resides in the innermost regions of the host galaxy, (typically within $< 10$ ckpc), while the gas in the outskirts is a minor contributor to the $N_\mathrm H$. The brightest quasars can have large angular variations in galactic obscuration, over 2 orders of magnitude, where the lines of sight with the lowest obscuration are those formed via strong gas outflows driven by AGN feedback. We find that for the overall AGN population, the mean $N_\mathrm H$ is generally larger for high luminosity and BH mass, while the $N_\mathrm H$ distribution is significantly broadened, developing a low $N_\mathrm H $ wing due to the angular variations driven by the AGN outflows/feedback. The obscured fraction P($N_{\rm H} > 10^{23} {\rm cm}^{-2}$) typically range from 0.6 to 1.0 for increasing $L_{X}$ (with $L_X > 10^{43} \rm{ergs/s}$), with no clear trend of redshift evolution. With respect to the galaxy host property, we find a linear relation between $N_{\rm H}$, $M_*$ and $M_{\rm H_2}$ with $\log N_{\rm H} = (0.24 \pm 0.03) \log M_{*} + (20.7 \pm 0.3)$ and $\log N_{\rm H} = (0.47 \pm 0.03) \log M_{\rm H_2} + (18.4 \pm 0.3)$. The dust optical depth in the UV band $��_{\mathrm UV}$ has tight positive correlation with $N_{\rm H}$. Our dust extincted UVLF is about 1.5 dex lower than the intrinsic UVLF, implying that more than 99\% of the $z \sim 7$ AGNs are heavily dust extincted and therefore would be missed by the UV band observation.

We discovered a strongly lensed (\mu >40) Lya emission at z=6.629 (S/N~18) in the MUSE Deep Lensed Field (MDLF) targeting the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416. Dedicated lensing simulations imply that the Lya emitting region necessarily crosses the caustic. The arc-like shape of the Lya extends 3 arcsec on the observed plane and is the result of two merged multiple images, each one with a de-lensed Lya luminosity L~30.8(>~35.0). The inferred rest-frame Lya equivalent width is EWo > 1120 A if the IGM transmission is T(IGM), Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures and 1 table. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyse the properties of the CIV broad emission line in connection with the X-ray emission of 30 bright SDSS quasars at z~3.0-3.3 with pointed XMM-Newton observations, which were selected to test the suitability of AGN as cosmological tools. In our previous work, we found that a large fraction (~25%) of the quasars in this sample are X-ray underluminous by factors of >3-10. As absorbing columns of >10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be safely ruled out, their weakness is most likely intrinsic. Here we explore possible correlations between the UV and X-ray features of these sources to investigate the origin of X-ray weakness. We fit their UV SDSS spectra and analyse their CIV properties (e.g., equivalent width, EW; line peak velocity, $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$) as a function of the X-ray photon index and 2-10 keV flux. We confirm the trends of CIV $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$ and EW with UV luminosity at 2500 angstrom for both X-ray weak and X-ray normal quasars, as well as the correlation between X-ray weakness and CIV EW. In contrast to some recent work, we do not observe any clear relation between the 2-10 keV luminosity and $\upsilon_{\rm peak}$. We find a correlation between the hard X-ray flux and the integrated CIV flux for X-ray normal quasars, whilst X-ray weak quasars deviate from the main trend by more than 0.5 dex. We argue that X-ray weakness might be interpreted in a starved X-ray corona picture associated with an ongoing disc-wind phase. If the wind is ejected in the vicinity of the black hole, the extreme-UV radiation that reaches the corona will be depleted, depriving the corona of seeds photons and generating an X-ray weak quasar. Yet, at the largest UV luminosities (>10$^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$), there will still be an ample reservoir of ionising photons that can explain the excess CIV emission observed in the X-ray weak quasars with respect to normal sources of similar X-ray luminosities., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures (with 3 more figures in the Appendix), abstract abridged. I will report on the discovery of a galaxy overdensity around the luminous quasar SDSS J1030+0524 at z=6.31. The structure is populated by at least six members, identified through dedicated spectroscopic campaigns at the Keck, VLT and LBT, with redshifts in the range 6.219-6.355. Assuming negligible peculiar velocities, this range corresponds to radial separations of ~5 physical Mpc from the QSO, that are comparable to the observed projected separations. The result is significant at more than 3.5sigma, and the overdensity level is at least 1.5-2 within the large volume probed (∼780 physical Mpc3). This is the first spectroscopic confirmation of a galaxy overdensity around a supermassive black hole in the first billion years of the Universe. Our finding lends support to the idea that the most distant and massive black holes form and grow within massive (> 1e12 Msun) dark matter halos in large scale structures, and that the absence of earlier detections of such systems was likely due to observational limitations. Prospects for future observations are discussed.

In the past, the cumulative metallicity distribution function (CMDF) turned out as a useful tool to constrain the accretion history of various components of the Milky Way. In this Letter, by means of analytical, leaky-box chemical evolution models (i.e. including both infall and galactic outflows) we study the CMDF of local star-forming galaxies that follow two fundamental empirical scaling relations, namely the mass-metallicity and main sequence relations. Our analysis shows that galactic winds, which are dominant mostly in low-mass systems, play a fundamental role in shaping this function and, in particular, in determining its steepness and curvature. We show that the CMDF of low-mass (M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot} \le 10^{9.5}$) and high-mass (M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$>10$^{10.5}$) galaxies deviate substantially from the results of a 'closed-box' model, as the evolution of the former (latter) systems is mostly dominated by outflows (infall). In the context of galactic downsizing, we show that downward-concave CMDFs (associated with systems with extremely small infall timescales and with very strong winds) are more frequent in low-mass galaxies, which include larger fractions of young systems and present more substantial deviations from equilibrium between gas accretion and reprocessing (either via star formation or winds)., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters (A&A Letters), 6 pages, 4 figures

We report on a superdense star-forming region with an effective radius (R_e) smaller than 13 pc identified at z=6.143 and showing a star-formation rate density \Sigma_SFR~1000 Msun/yr/kpc2 (or conservatively >300 Msun/yr/kpc2). Such a dense region is detected with S/N>40 hosted by a dwarf extending over 440 pc, dubbed D1 (Vanzella et al. 2017b). D1 is magnified by a factor 17.4+/-5.0 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416 and elongated tangentially by a factor 13.2+/-4.0 (including the systematic errors). The lens model accurately reproduces the positions of the confirmed multiple images with a r.m.s. of 0.35", and the tangential stretch is well depicted by a giant multiply-imaged Lya arc. D1 is part of an interacting star-forming complex extending over 800 pc. The SED-fitting, the very blue ultraviolet slope (\beta ~ -2.5, F(\lambda) ~ \lambda^\beta) and the prominent Lya emission of the stellar complex imply that very young (< 10-100 Myr), moderately dust-attenuated (E(B-V), Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, MNRAS accepted

Context. A census of faint and tiny star forming complexes at high redshift is key to improving our understanding of reionizing sources, galaxy growth, and the formation of globular clusters. Aims. We present the MUSE Deep Lensed Field (MDLF) program, which is aimed at unveiling the very faint population of high redshift sources that are magnified by strong gravitational lensing and to significantly increase the number of constraints for the lens model. Methods. We describe Deep MUSE observations of 17.1 h of integration on a single pointing over the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS J0416, providing line flux limits down to 2 × 10−19 erg s−1 cm−2 within 300 km s−1 and continuum detection down to magnitude 26, both at the three sigma level at λ = 7000 Å. For point sources with a magnification (μ) greater than 2.5 (7.7), the MLDF depth is equivalent to integrating more than 100 (1000) h in blank fields, as well as complementing non-lensed studies of very faint high-z sources. The source-plane effective area of the MDLF with μ > 6.3 is < 50% of the image-plane field of view. Results. We confirm spectroscopic redshifts for all 136 multiple images of 48 source galaxies at 0.9 < z < 6.2. Within those galaxies, we securely identify 182 multiple images of 66 galaxy components that we use to constrain our lens model. This makes MACS J0416 the cluster with the largest number of confirmed constraints for any strong lens model to date. We identify 116 clumps belonging to background high-z galaxies; the majority of them are multiple images and span magnitude, size, and redshift intervals of [ − 18, −10], [ ∼ 400 − 3] parsec and 1 < z < 6.6, respectively, with the faintest or most magnified ones probing possible single gravitationally bound star clusters. The multiplicity introduced by gravitational lensing allows us, in several cases, to triple the effective integration time up to ∼51 h exposure per single family, leading to a detection limit for unresolved emission lines of a few 10−20 erg s−1 cm−2, after correction for lensing magnification. Ultraviolet high-ionization metal lines (and He IIλ1640) are detected with S/N > 10 for individual objects down to de-lensed magnitudes between 28 and 30. The median stacked spectrum of 33 sources with a median MUV ≃ −17 and ⟨z⟩ = 3.2 (1.7 < z < 3.9) shows high-ionization lines, suggesting that they are common in such faint sources. Conclusions. Deep MUSE observations, in combination with existing HST imaging, allowed us to: (1) confirm redshifts for extremely faint high-z sources; (2) peer into their internal structure to unveil clumps down to 100 − 200 pc scale; (3) in some cases, break down such clumps into star-forming complexes matching the scales of bound star clusters (< 20 pc effective radius); (4) double the number of constraints for the lens model, reaching an unprecedented set of 182 bona-fide multiple images and confirming up to 213 galaxy cluster members. These results demonstrate the power of JWST and future adaptive optics facilities mounted on the Extremely Large Telescopes (e.g., European-ELT Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY, MAORY, coupled with the Multi-AO Imaging CamerA for Deep Observations, MICADO) or Very Large Telescope (e.g., MCAO Assisted Visible Imager and Spectrograph, MAVIS) when combined in studies with gravitational telescopes.

We search for unresolved X-ray emission from lensed sources in the FOV of 11 CLASH clusters with Chandra data. We consider the solid angle in the lens plane corresponding to a magnification $��>1.5$, that amounts to a total of ~100 arcmin$^2$. Our main goal is to assess the efficiency of massive clusters as cosmic telescopes to explore the faint end of X-ray extragalactic source population. We search for X-ray emission from strongly lensed sources identified in the optical, and perform an untargeted detection of lensed X-ray sources. We detect X-ray emission only in 9 out of 849 lensed/background optical sources. The stacked emission of the sources without detection does not reveal any signal in any band. Based on the untargeted detection, we find 66 additional X-ray sources that are consistent with being lensed sources. After accounting for completeness and sky coverage, we measure for the first time the soft- and hard-band number counts of lensed X-ray sources. The results are consistent with current modelization of the AGN population distribution. The distribution of de-lensed fluxes of the sources identified in moderately deep CLASH fields reaches a flux limit of ~$10^{-16}$ and ~$10^{-15}$ erg/s/cm$^{2}$ in the soft and hard bands, respectively. We conclude that, in order to match the depth of the CDFS exploiting massive clusters as cosmic telescopes, the required number of cluster fields is about two orders of magnitude larger than that offered by the 20 years Chandra archive. A significant step forward will be made when future X-ray facilities, with ~1' angular resolution and large effective area, will allow the serendipitous discovery of rare, strongly lensed high-$z$ X-ray sources, enabling the study of faint AGN activity in early Universe and the measurement of gravitational time delays in the X-ray variability of multiply imaged AGN., Accepted for publication in A&A

The discovery of hundreds of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe powered by already grown SMBHs challenges our knowledge of SMBH formation. In particular, investigations of $z>6$ QSOs presenting notable properties can provide unique information on the physics of fast SMBH growth in the early universe. We present the results of follow-up observations of the $z=6.515$ radio-quiet QSO PSO167-13, which is interacting with a close companion galaxy. The PSO167-13 system has been recently proposed to host the first heavily obscured X-ray source at high redshift. We observed PSO167-13 with Chandra/ACIS-S (177 ks), and obtained new spectroscopic observations (7.2 h) with Magellan/FIRE. No significant X-ray emission is detected from the PSO167-13 system, suggesting that the obscured X-ray source previously tentatively detected was either due to a strong background fluctuation or is highly variable. The upper limit (90% confidence level) on the X-ray emission of PSO167-13 ($L_{2-10\,\mathrm{keV}}6$ QSO. The ratio between the X-ray and UV luminosity of $\alpha_{ox}6$ times weaker than the expectation based on its UV luminosity. The new Magellan/FIRE spectrum of PSO167-13 is strongly affected by the unfavorable sky conditions, but the tentatively detected C IV and Mg II emission lines appear strongly blueshifted. The most plausible explanations for the X-ray weakness of PSO167-13 are intrinsic weakness or small-scale absorption by Compton-thick material. The possible strong blueshift of its emission lines hints at the presence of nuclear winds, which could be related to its X-ray weakness., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

We report on ALMA observations of D1, a system at z~6.15 with stellar mass M_* ~ 10^7 M_sun containing globular cluster (GC) precursors, strongly magnified by the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1-2403. Since the discovery of GC progenitors at high redshift, ours is the first attempt to probe directly the physical properties of their neutral gas through infrared observations. A careful analysis of our dataset, performed with a suitable procedure designed to identify faint narrow lines and which can test various possible values for the unknown linewidth value, allowed us to identify a 4-sigma tentative detection of [CII] emission with intrinsic luminosity L_CII=(2.9 +/- 1.4) 10^6 L_sun, one of the lowest values ever detected at high redshift. This study offers a first insight on previously uncharted regions of the L_CII-SFR relation. Despite large uncertainties affecting our measure of the star formation rate, if taken at face value our estimate lies more than 1 dex below the values observed in local and high redshift systems. Our weak detection indicates a deficiency of [CII] emission, possibly ascribed to various explanations, such as a low-density gas and/or a strong radiation field caused by intense stellar feedback, and a low metal content. From the non-detection in the continuum we derive constraints on the dust mass, with 3-sigma upper limit values as low as a few 10^4 M_sun, consistent with the values measured in local metal-poor galaxies., MNRAS, accepted. 15 pages, 5 figures

X-rays offer a reliable method to identify Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). However, in the high-redshift Universe X-ray AGN are poorly sampled due to their relatively low space density and the small areas covered by X-ray surveys. In addition to wide-area X-ray surveys, it is important to have deep optical data in order to locate the optical counterparts and determine their redshifts. In this work, we build a high-redshift ($z\geqslant3.5$) X-ray selected AGN sample in the XMM-XXL northern field using the most updated [0.5-2 keV] catalogue along with a plethora of new spectroscopic and multi-wavelength catalogues, including the deep optical Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) data reaching magnitude limits i$\sim$26 mag. We select all the spectroscopically confirmed AGN and complement this sample with high-redshift candidates that are HSC g- and r-band dropouts. To confirm the dropouts, we derive their photometric redshifts using spectral energy distribution techniques. We end up with a sample of 54 high-z sources (28 with spec-z), the largest in this field so far (almost three times larger than in previous studies), and we estimate the possible contamination and completeness. We calculate the number counts (logN-logS) in different redshift bins and compare our results with previous studies and models. We provide the strongest high-redshift AGN constraints yet at bright fluxes ($\rm f_{0.5-2~keV} > 10^{-15} erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}$). The samples of $z\geqslant3.5$, $z\geqslant4$ and $z\geqslant5$ are in agreement with an exponential decline model similar to that witnessed at optical wavelengths. We present observations obtained with the VLT/MUSE optical integral field spectrograph of the radio source 3C277.3, located at a redshift of 0.085 and associated with the galaxy Coma A. An emission line region fully enshrouds the double-lobed radio source, which is ~60 kpc x 90 kpc in size. Based on the emission line ratios, we identified five compact knots in which the gas ionization is powered by young stars located as far as ~60 kpc from the host. The emission line filaments surrounding the radio emission are compatible with ionization from fast shocks (with a velocity of 350-500 km/s), but a contribution from star formation occurring at the edges of the radio source is likely. Coma A might be a unique example in the local Universe in which the expanding outflow triggers star formation throughout the whole radio source., Pre-proofs version - Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the X-ray source catalog for the ∼479 ks Chandra exposure of the SDSS J1030+0524 field, which is centered on a region that shows the best evidence to date of an overdensity around a z > 6 quasar, and also includes a galaxy overdensity around a Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II (FRII) radio galaxy at z = 1.7. Using wavdetect for initial source detection and ACIS Extract for source photometry and significance assessment, we create preliminary catalogs of sources that are detected in the full (0.5-7.0 keV), soft (0.5-2.0 keV), and hard (2-7 keV) bands, respectively. We produce X-ray simulations that mirror our Chandra observation to filter our preliminary catalogs and achieve a completeness level of > 91% and a reliability level of ∼95% in each band. The catalogs in the three bands are then matched into a final main catalog of 256 unique sources. Among them, 244, 193, and 208 are detected in the full, soft, and hard bands, respectively. The Chandra observation covers a total area of 335 arcmin2 and reaches flux limits over the central few square arcmins of ∼3 × 10-16, 6 × 10-17, and 2 × 10-16 erg cm-2 s-1 in the full, soft, and hard bands, respectively This makes J1030 field the fifth deepest extragalactic X-ray survey to date. The field is part of the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC), and is also covered by optical imaging data from the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), near-infrared imaging data from the Canada France Hawaii Telescope WIRCam (CFHT/WIRCam), and Spitzer IRAC. Thanks to its dense multi-wavelength coverage, J1030 represents a legacy field for the study of large-scale structures around distant accreting supermassive black holes. Using a likelihood ratio analysis, we associate multi-band (r, z, J, and 4.5 μm) counterparts for 252 (98.4%) of the 256 Chandra sources, with an estimated reliability of 95%. Finally, we compute the cumulative number of sources in each X-ray band, finding that they are in general agreement with the results from the Chandra Deep Fields., We acknowledge the referee for a prompt and constructive report. In their evolution, star-forming galaxies are known to follow scaling relations between some fundamental physical quantities, such as the mass-metallicity and the main sequence relations. We aim at studying the evolution of galaxies that, at a given redshift, lie simultaneously on the mass-metallicity and main sequence relations (MZR, MSR). To this aim, we use the analytical, 'leaky-box' chemical evolution model of Spitoni et al. (2017), in which galaxy evolution is described by an infall timescale $\tau$ and a wind efficiency $\lambda$. We provide a detailed analysis of the temporal evolution of galactic metallicity, stellar mass, mass-weighted age and gas fraction. The evolution of the galaxies lying on the MZR and MSR at $z\sim0.1$ suggests that the average infall time-scale in two different bins of stellar masses ($M_{\star}10^{10} M_{\odot}$) decreases with decreasing redshift. This means that at each redshift, only the youngest galaxies can be assembled on the shortest timescales and still belong to the star-forming MSR. In the lowest mass bin, a decrease of the median $\tau$ is accompanied by an increase of the median $\lambda$ value. This implies that systems which have formed at more recent times will need to eject a larger amount of mass to keep their metallicity at low values. Another important result is that galactic downsizing, as traced by the age-mass relation, is naturally recovered by imposing that local galaxies lie on both the MZR and MSR. Finally, we study the evolution of the hosts of C$_{\rm IV}$ -selected AGN, which at $z\sim 2$ follow a flat MZR, as found by Mignoli et al. (2019). If we impose that these systems lie on the MSR, at lower redshifts we find an 'inverted' MZR, meaning that some additional processes must be at play in their evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A), 20 pages, 26 figures

We present a series of new, publicly available mock catalogs of X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs), non-active galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. They are based on up-to-date observational results on the demographic of extragalactic X-ray sources and their extrapolations.These mocks reach fluxes below 1E-20 erg s-1 cm-2 in the 0.5-2 keV band, i.e., more than an order of magnitude below the predicted limits of future deep fields, and therefore represent an important tool for simulating extragalactic X-ray surveys with both current and future telescopes. We use our mocks to perform a set of end-to-end simulations of X-ray surveys with the forthcoming Athena mission and with the AXIS probe, a sub-arcsecond resolution X-ray mission concept proposed to the Astro 2020 Decadal Survey. We find that these proposed, next generation surveys may transform our knowledge of the deep X-ray Universe. As an example, in a total observing time of 15\,Ms, AXIS would detect ~225,000 AGNs and ~$50,000 non-active galaxies, reaching a flux limit f_0.5-2~5E-19 erg/s/cm2 in the 0.5-2 keV band, with an improvement of over an order of magnitude with respect to surveys with current X-ray facilities. Consequently, 90% of these sources would be detected for the first time in the X-rays. We present a procedure to constrain the redshifts of obscured ($N_H > 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) based on low-count statistics X-ray spectra, which can be adopted when photometric and/or spectroscopic redshifts are unavailable or difficult to obtain. We selected a sample of 54 obscured AGN candidates on the basis of their X-ray hardness ratio, $HR>-0.1$, in the Chandra deep field ($\sim$479 ks, 335 arcmin$^2$) around the $z=6.3$ QSO SDSS J1030+0524. The sample has a median value of $\approx80$ net counts in the 0.5-7 keV energy band. We estimate reliable X-ray redshift solutions taking advantage of the main features in obscured AGN spectra, like the Fe 6.4 keV K$\mathrm{\alpha}$ emission line, the 7.1 keV Fe absorption edge and the photoelectric absorption cut-off. The significance of such features is investigated through spectral simulations, and the derived X-ray redshift solutions are then compared with photometric redshifts. Both photometric and X-ray redshifts are derived for 33 sources. When multiple solutions are derived by any method, we find that combining the redshift solutions of the two techniques improves the rms by a factor of two. Using our redshift estimates ($0.1\lesssim z \lesssim 4$), we derived absorbing column densities in the range $\sim 10^{22}-10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ and absorption-corrected, 2-10 keV rest-frame luminosities between $\sim 10^{42}$ and $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with median values of $N_H = 1.7 \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $L_{\mathrm{2-10\, keV}} = 8.3\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, respectively. Our results suggest that the adopted procedure can be applied to current and future X-ray surveys, for sources detected only in the X-rays or that have uncertain photometric or single-line spectroscopic redshifts., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures

We report on the spectroscopic confirmation of a large-scale structure around the luminous z = 6.31 quasi-stellar object (QSO) SDSS J1030+0524, powered by a one billion solar mass black hole. The structure is populated by at least six members, namely, four Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs), and two Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs). The four LBGs were identified among a sample of 21 i-band dropouts with zAB < 25.5 selected up to projected separations of 5 physical Mpc (15 arcmin) from the QSO. Their redshifts were determined through multi-object spectroscopic observations at 8-10 m class telescopes lasting up to eight hours. The two LAEs were identified in a 6 h VLT/MUSE observation centered on the QSO. The redshifts of the six galaxies cover the range between 6.129-6.355. Assuming that the peculiar velocities are negligible, this range corresponds to radial separations of ±5 physical Mpc from the QSO, that is comparable to the projected scale of the observed LBG distribution on the sky. We conservatively estimate that this structure is significant at a level > 3.5σ and that the level of the galaxy overdensity is at least 1.5-2 within the large volume sampled (∼780 physical Mpc3). The spectral properties of the six member galaxies (Lyα strength and UV luminosity) are similar to those of field galaxies at similar redshifts. This is the first spectroscopic identification of a galaxy overdensity around a supermassive black hole in the first billion years of the Universe. Our finding lends support to the idea that the most distant and massive black holes form and grow within massive (>1012 M) dark matter halos in large-scale structures and that the absence of earlier detections of such systems is likely due to observational limitations., We acknowledge funding from the INAF main-stream (1.05.01.86.31) and from the agreement ASI-INAF n. 2017-14-H.O. We present a VLT/X-Shooter spectroscopy of the Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy 'Ion2' at z=3.2121 and compare it to that of the recently discovered strongly lensed LyC-emitter at z=2.37, known as the 'Sunburst' arc. Three main results emerge from the X-Shooter spectrum: (a) the Lya has three distinct peaks with the central one at the systemic redshift, indicating a ionised tunnel through which both Lya and LyC radiation escape; (b) the large O32 oxygen index ([OIII]4959-5007 / [OII]3727-3729) of 9.18(-1.32/+1.82) is compatible to those measured in local (z~0.4) LyC leakers; (c) there are narrow nebular high-ionisation metal lines with \sigma_v < 20 km/s, which confirms the presence of young hot, massive stars. The HeII1640 appears broad, consistent with a young stellar component including Wolf-Rayet stars. Similarly, the Sunburst LyC-emitter shows a triple-peaked Lya profile and from VLT/MUSE spectroscopy the presence of spectral features arising from young hot and massive stars. The strong lensing magnification, (\mu > 20), suggests that this exceptional object is a gravitationally-bound star cluster observed at a cosmological distance, with a stellar mass M, Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures and 1 table, MNRAS accepted. Based on ALMA Band 3 observations of the CO(2→1) line transition, we report the discovery of three new gas-rich (MH2 ∼ 1.5 − 4.8 × 1010 M⊙) galaxies in an overdense region at z = 1.7 that already contains eight spectroscopically confirmed members. This leads to a total of 11 confirmed overdensity members within a projected distance of ∼1.15 Mpc and in a redshift range of Δz = 0.012. Under simple assumptions, we estimate that the system has a total mass of ≥3 − 6 × 1013 M⊙, and show that it will likely evolve into a ≳1014 M⊙ cluster at z = 0. The overdensity includes a powerful Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II (FRII) radio galaxy, around which we discovered a large molecular gas reservoir (MH2 ∼ 2 × 1011 M⊙). We fit the FRII resolved CO emission with a 2D Gaussian model with a major (minor) axis of ∼27 (∼17) kpc, which is a factor of ∼3 larger than the optical rest-frame emission. Under the assumption of a simple edge-on disk morphology, we find that the galaxy interstellar medium produces a column density toward the nucleus of ∼5.5 × 1023 cm−2. A dense interstellar medium like this may then contribute significantly to the total nuclear obscuration measured in the X-rays (NH, X ∼ 1.5 × 1024 cm−2) in addition to a small, paresec-scale absorber around the central engine. The velocity map of this source unveils a rotational motion of the gas that is perpendicular to the radio jets. All ALMA sources have a dust-reddened counterpart in deep Hubble Space Telescope images (bands i, z, H), while we do not detect any molecular gas reservoir around the known UV-bright, star-forming members discovered by MUSE. This highlights the capability of ALMA of tracing gas-rich members of the overdensity. For the MUSE sources, we derive 3σ upper limits to the molecular gas mass of MH2 ≤ 2.8 − 4.8 × 1010 M⊙. We derive star formation rates in the range ∼5 − 100 M⊙ yr−1 for the three new ALMA sources. The FRII is located at the center of the projected spatial distribution of the structure members, and its velocity offset from the peak of the redshift distribution is well within the velocity dispersion of the structure. All this, coupled with the large amount of gas around the FRII, its stellar mass of ∼3 × 1011 M⊙, star formation rate of ∼200 − 600 M⊙ yr−1, and powerful radio-to-X-ray emission, suggests that this source is the likely progenitor of the future brightest cluster galaxy.

arXiv:2004.07604v2, We present the X-ray spectra of 185 bright sources detected in the XMM-Newton deep survey of the Chandra Deep Field South with the three EPIC cameras combined. The 2–10 keV flux limit of the sample is 2 × 10−15 erg s−1 cm−2. The sources are distributed over a redshift range of z = 0.1−3.8, with 11 new X-ray redshift measurements included. A spectral analysis was performed using a simple model to obtain absorbing column densities, rest-frame 2–10 keV luminosities, and Fe K line properties of 180 sources at z > 0.4. Obscured AGN are found to be more abundant toward higher redshifts. Using the XMM-Newton data alone, seven Compton-thick AGN candidates were identified, which set the Compton-thick AGN fraction at ≃4%. An exploratory spectral inspection method with two rest-frame X-ray colours and an Fe line strength indicator was introduced and tested against the results from spectral fitting. This method works reasonably well to characterise a spectral shape and can be useful for a pre-selection of Compton-thick AGN candidates. We found six objects exhibiting broad Fe K lines out of 21 unobscured AGN of best data quality, implying a detection rate of ∼30%. Five redshift spikes, each with more than six sources, are identified in the redshift distribution of the X-ray sources. Contrary to the overall trend, the sources at the two higher redshift spikes, at z = 1.61 and z = 2.57, exhibit a puzzlingly low obscuration., We acknowledge financial contribution from the agreement ASI-INAF n.2017-14-H.O. We present the first detection of an X-ray flare from an ultracool dwarf of spectral class L. The event was identified in the EXTraS database of XMM-Newton variable sources, and its optical counterpart, J0331-27, was found through a cross-match with the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 release. Next to an earlier four-photon detection of Kelu-1, J0331-27 is only the second L dwarf detected in X-rays, and much more distant than other ultracool dwarfs with X-ray detections (photometric distance of 240 pc). From an optical spectrum with the VIMOS instrument at the VLT, we determine the spectral type of J0331-27 to be L1. The X-ray flare has an energy of E_X,F ~ 2x10^33 erg, placing it in the regime of superflares. No quiescent emission is detected, and from 2.5 Msec of XMM data we derive an upper limit of L_X,qui < 10^27 erg/s. The flare peak luminosity L_X,peak = 6.3x10^29 erg/s, flare duration tau_decay ~ 2400 s, and plasma temperature (~16 MK) are similar to values observed in X-ray flares of M dwarfs. This shows that strong magnetic reconnection events and the ensuing plasma heating are still present even in objects with photospheres as cool as ~2100 K. However, the absence of any other flares above the detection threshold of E_X,F ~2.5x10^32 erg in a total of ~2.5 Ms of X-ray data yields a flare energy number distribution inconsistent with the canonical power law dN/dE ~ E^-2, suggesting that magnetic energy release in J0331-27 -- and possibly in all L dwarfs -- takes place predominantly in the form of giant flares., 5 pages, 3 figures. A flourishing research line investigates how technology may help in supporting the autonomy and social inclusion of people with Intellectual Disability (ID). Many attempts are made to increase the use of technological tools in order to make the contexts of life more accessible, not only from the point of view of physical access, but also in terms of access to knowledge. However, previous literature lacks an evidence-based investigation, and a participatory research approach is missing. This preliminary study aims to present a person-centered research methodology involving two people with disabilities who have lived for about a year in an apartment designed for independent living. Participants were actively involved in the co-construction of strategies that might facilitate autonomy in community living settings through the use of recent low-cost devices. Preliminary results are reported with the intent to: (i) explain which are the obstacles/needs that could be met through the use of technologies in community-based care settings; (ii) describe how technological devices may prove to be functional for people with disability (e.g. the processes that should guide the implementation of clear and informative contents).

We present the joint Chandra, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR analysis of two nearby Seyfert galaxies, NGC 3081 and ESO 565-G019. These are the only two having Chandra data in a larger sample of ten low redshift ($z \le 0.05$), candidates Compton-thick Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) selected in the 15-150 keV band with Swift-BAT that were still lacking NuSTAR data. Our spectral analysis, performed using physically-motivated models, provides an estimate of both the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) and average (N$_{H,S}$) column densities of the two torii. NGC 3081 has a Compton-thin l.o.s. column density N$_{H,z}$=[0.58-0.62] $\times 10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$, but the N$_{H,S}$, beyond the Compton-thick threshold (N$_{H,S}$=[1.41-1.78] $\times 10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$), suggests a "patchy" scenario for the distribution of the circumnuclear matter. ESO 565-G019 has both Compton-thick l.o.s. and N$_{H,S}$ column densities (N$_{H,z}>$2.31 $\times 10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$ and N$_{H,S} >$2.57 $\times 10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$, respectively). The use of physically-motivated models, coupled with the broad energy range covered by the data (0.6-70 keV and 0.6-40 keV, for NGC 3081 and ESO 565-G019, respectively) allows us to constrain the covering factor of the obscuring material, which is C$_{TOR}$=[0.63-0.82] for NGC 3081, and C$_{TOR}$=[0.39-0.65] for ESO 565-G019., 15 pages, 22 figures, Accepted for publication on ApJ

For over 60 years, the scientific community has studied actively growing central super-massive black holes (active galactic nuclei -- AGN) but fundamental questions on their genesis remain unanswered. Numerical simulations and theoretical arguments show that black hole growth occurs during short-lived periods ($\sim$ 10$^{7}$ -10$^{8}$ yr) of powerful accretion. Major mergers are commonly invoked as the most likely dissipative process to trigger the rapid fueling of AGN. If the AGN-merger paradigm is true, we expect galaxy mergers to coincide with black hole accretion during a heavily obscured AGN phase (N$_H$ $ > 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$). We investigate the population of high-redshift ($3\leq z < 6$) AGN selected in the two deepest X-ray surveys, the 7 Ms \textit{Chandra} Deep Field-South and 2 Ms \textit{Chandra} Deep Field-North. Their outstanding sensitivity and spectral characterization of faint sources allow us to focus on the sub-$L_*$ regime (log$L_{\mathrm{X}}\lesssim44$), poorly sampled by previous works using shallower data, and the obscured population. Taking fully into account the individual photometric-redshift probability distribution functions, the final sample consists of $\approx102$ X-ray selected AGN at $3\leq z < 6$. The fraction of AGN obscured by column densities log$N_{\mathrm{H}}>23$ is $\sim0.6-0.8$, once incompleteness effects are taken into account, with no strong dependence on redshift or luminosity. We derived the high-redshift AGN number counts down to $F_{\mathrm{0.5-2\,keV}}=7\times10^{-18}\,\mathrm{erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, extending previous results to fainter fluxes, especially at $z>4$. We put the tightest constraints to date on the low-luminosity end of AGN luminosity function at high redshift. The space-density, in particular, declines at $z>3$ at all luminosities, with only a marginally steeper slope for low-luminosity AGN. By comparing the evolution of the AGN and galaxy densities, we suggest that such a decline at high luminosities is mainly driven by the underlying galaxy population, while at low luminosities there are hints of an intrinsic evolution of the parameters driving nuclear activity. We study the X-ray variability properties of distant AGNs in the Chandra Deep Field-South region over 17 years, up to $z\sim 4$, and compare them with those predicted by models based on local samples. We use the results of Monte Carlo simulations to account for the biases introduced by the discontinuous sampling and the low-count regime. We confirm that variability is an ubiquitous property of AGNs, with no clear dependence on the density of the environment. The variability properties of high-z AGNs, over different temporal timescales, are most consistent with a Power Spectral Density (PSD) described by a broken (or bending) power-law, similar to nearby AGNs. We confirm the presence of an anti-correlation between luminosity and variability, resulting from the dependence of variability on BH mass and accretion rate. We explore different models, finding that our acceptable solutions predict that BH mass influences the value of the PSD break frequency, while the Eddington ratio $\lambda_{Edd}$ affects the PSD break frequency and, possibly, the PSD amplitude as well. We derive the evolution of the average $\lambda_{Edd}$ as a function of redshift, finding results in agreement with measurements based on different estimators. The large statistical uncertainties make our results consistent with a constant Eddington ratio, although one of our models suggest a possible increase of $\lambda_{Edd}$ with lookback time up to $z\sim 2-3$. The physics and demographics of high-redshift obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) is still scarcely investigated. New samples of such objects, selected with different techniques, can provide useful insights into their physical properties. Aims. With the goal to determine the properties of the gas in the emitting region of type 2 AGN, in particular, the gas metal content, we exploit predictions from photoionization models, including new parameterizations for the distance of gas distribution from the central source and internal microturbulence in the emitting clouds, to interpret rest-frame UV spectral data. Methods. We selected a sample of 90 obscured (type 2) AGN with 1.45 ≤ z ≤ 3.05 from the zCOSMOS-deep galaxy sample by 5σ detection of the high-ionization C iv λ1549 narrow emission line. This feature in a galaxy spectrum is often associated with nuclear activity, and the selection effectiveness has also been confirmed by diagnostic diagrams based on utraviolet (UV) emission-line ratios. We applied the same selection technique and collected a sample of 102 unobscured (type 1) AGN. Taking advantage of the large amount of multiband data available in the COSMOS field, we investigated the properties of the Civ-selected type 2 AGN, focusing on their host galaxies, X-ray emission, and UV emission lines. Finally, we investigated the physical properties of the ionized gas in the narrow-line region (NLR) of this type 2 AGN sample by combining the analysis of strong UV emission lines with predictions from photoionization models. Results. We find that in order to successfully reproduce the relative intensity of UV emission lines of the selected high-z type 2 AGN, two new ingredients in the photoionization models are fundamental: small inner radii of the NLR (≈90 pc for LAGN = 1045 erg s−1 ), and the internal dissipative microturbulence of the gas-emitting clouds (with vmicr ≈ 100 km s−1 ). With these modified models, we compute the gas-phase metallicity of the NLR, and our measurements indicate a statistically significant evolution of the metal content with redshift. We present a multi-wavelength study of seven AGN at spectroscopic redshift >2.5 in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South, selected to have good FIR/sub-mm detections. Our aim is to investigate the possibility that the obscuration observed in the X-rays can be produced by the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. Based on the 7 Ms Chandra spectra, we measured obscuring column densities N$_{H, X}$ in excess of 7x10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and intrinsic X-ray luminosities L$_{X}$>10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for our targets, as well as equivalent widths for the Fe K$\alpha$ emission line EW>0.5-1 keV. We built the UV-to-FIR spectral energy distributions by using broad-band photometry from CANDELS and Herschel catalogs. By means of an SED decomposition technique, we derived stellar masses (M$_{*}$~10$^{11}$ Msun), IR luminosities (L$_{IR}$>10$^{12}$ Lsun), star formation rates (SFR~190-1680 Msun yr$^{-1}$) and AGN bolometric luminosities (L$_{bol}$~10$^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$) for our sample. We used an empirically-calibrated relation between gas masses and FIR/sub-mm luminosities and derived M$_{gas}$~0.8-5.4x10$^{10}$ Msun. High-resolution (0.3-0.7'') ALMA data (when available, CANDELS data otherwise) were used to estimate the galaxy size and hence the volume enclosing most of the ISM under simple geometrical assumptions. These measurements were then combined to derive the column density associated with the ISM of the host, on the order of N$_{H, ISM}$~10$^{23-24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The comparison between the ISM column densities and those measured from the X-ray spectral analysis shows that they are similar. This suggests that, at least at high redshift, significant absorption on kpc scales by the dense ISM in the host likely adds to or substitutes that produced by circumnuclear gas on pc scales (i.e., the torus of unified models). We present the mean spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of optically selected quasars (QSOs) at redshifts of $1 \le z \le 5$. To derive it, we exploit photometric information from SDSS, UKIDSS, and WISE surveys in combination with a stacking analysis of \textit{Herschel}, \textit{AKARI}, and \textit{Planck} maps at the location of the QSOs. The near-UV and optical parts of the reconstructed mean rest-frame SED are similar to those found in other studies. However, the SED shows an excess at 1-2 $\mu$m (when compared to the aforementioned SEDs normalized in the near-UV) and a prominent bump around 4-6 $\mu$m, followed by a decrease out to $\sim 20 \,\mu$m and a subsequent far-IR bump. From the fitted SEDs we estimate the average active galactic nuclei (AGN) luminosity $L_{\rm AGN}$ and star formation rate (SFR) as function of cosmic time, finding typical $L_{\rm AGN} \sim 10^{46} - 10^{47}$ erg/s and SFR $\sim 50 - 1000\, M_{\odot}/$yr. We develop mid-IR based criteria to split the QSO sample, finding that these allow us to move along the average relationship in the SFR vs. $L_{\rm AGN}$ diagram toward increasing AGN luminosities. When interpreted in the context of the in-situ coevolution scenario presented by Lapi et al. 2014, our results suggest that the detection in the far-IR band is an effective criterion to select objects where the star formation is on the verge of being affected by energy/momentum feedback from the central AGN., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, text updated to match the accepted version, ApJ in press

We report the discovery of a galaxy overdensity around a Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II (FRII) radio galaxy at z=1.7 in the deep multiband survey around the z=6.3 QSO SDSS J1030+0524. Based on a 6hr VLT/MUSE and on a 4hr LBT/LUCI observation, we identify at least eight galaxy members in this structure with spectroscopic redshift z=1.687-1.699, including the FRII galaxy at z=1.699. Most of the identified overdensity members are blue, compact galaxies that are actively forming stars at rates of $\sim$8-60 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. Based on a 500ks Chandra ACIS-I observation we found that the FRII nucleus hosts a luminous QSO ($L_{2-10keV}=1.3\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, intrinsic and rest-frame) that is obscured by Compton-thick absorption ($N_H=1.5\pm0.6\times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$). Our Chandra observation, the deepest so far for a distant FRII within a galaxy overdensity, revealed significant diffuse X-ray emission within the region covered by the overdensity. In particular, X-ray emission extending for $\sim$240 kpc is found around the Eastern lobe of the FRII. Four out of the six MUSE star forming galaxies in the overdensity are distributed in an arc-like shape at the edge of this diffuse X-ray emission. The probability of observing by chance four out of the six $z=1.7$ sources at the edge of the diffuse emission is negligible. In addition, these four galaxies have the highest specific star formation rates of the MUSE galaxies in the overdensity and lie above the main sequence of field galaxies of equal stellar mass at z=1.7. We propose that the diffuse X-rays originate from an expanding bubble of gas that is shock-heated by the FRII jet, and that star formation is promoted by the compression of the cold interstellar medium of the galaxies around the bubble, which may be remarkable evidence of positive AGN feedback on cosmological scales. While theoretical arguments predict that most of the early growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) happened during heavily obscured phases of accretion, current methods used for selecting $z>6$ quasars (QSOs) are strongly biased against obscured QSOs, thus considerably limiting our understanding of accreting SMBHs during the first Gyr of the Universe from an observational point of view. We report the $Chandra$ discovery of the first heavily obscured QSO candidate in the early universe, hosted by a close ($\approx5$ kpc) galaxy pair at $z=6.515$. One of the members is an optically classified type 1 QSO, PSO167-13. The companion galaxy was first detected as a [C II] emitter by ALMA. An X-ray source is significantly ($P=0.9996$) detected by $Chandra$ in the 2-5 keV band, with $2\times10^{24}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ and $N_H>6\times10^{23}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at $68\%$ and $90\%$ confidence levels, respectively. Thus, regardless of which of the two galaxies is associated with the X-ray emission, this source is the first heavily obscured QSO candidate at $z>6$., Comment: A&A Letters, accepted

State-of-the-art models of massive black hole formation postulate that quasars at $z>6$ reside in extreme peaks of the cosmic density structure in the early universe. Even so, direct observational evidence of these overdensities is elusive, especially on large scales ($\gg$1 Mpc) as the spectroscopic follow-up of $z>6$ galaxies is observationally expensive. Here we present Keck / DEIMOS optical and IRAM / NOEMA millimeter spectroscopy of a $z\sim6$ Lyman-break galaxy candidate originally discovered via broadband selection, at a projected separation of 4.65 physical Mpc (13.94 arcmin) from the luminous $z$=6.308 quasar J1030+0524. This well-studied field presents the strongest indication to date of a large-scale overdensity around a $z>6$ quasar. The Keck observations suggest a $z\sim6.3$ dropout identification of the galaxy. The NOEMA 1.2mm spectrum shows a 3.5$��$ line that, if interpreted as [CII], would place the galaxy at $z$=6.318 (i.e., at a line-of-sight separation of 3.9 comoving Mpc assuming that relative proper motion is negligible). The measured [CII] luminosity is $3\times10^8$ L$_\odot$, in line with expectations for a galaxy with a star formation rate $\sim15$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, as inferred from the rest-frame UV photometry. Our combined observations place the galaxy at the same redshift as the quasar, thus strengthening the overdensity scenario for this $z>6$ quasar. X-ray emission from AGN is believed to be produced via Comptonization of optical/UV seed photons emitted by the accretion disk, up-scattered by hot electrons in a corona surrounding the black hole. A critical compactness vs. temperature threshold is predicted above which any increase in the source luminosity, for a fixed size, would then generate positron-electron pairs rather than continue heating the coronal plasma. Current observations seem to confirm that all AGN populate the region below this critical line. These models, however, have never been probed by observations in the high-luminosity regime, where the critical line is expected to reach low temperatures. To fill this observational gap, we selected two luminous ($log(L_{bol})>47.5$ erg/s) quasars, 2MASSJ1614346+470420 ($z=1.86$) and B1422+231 ($z=3.62$), and obtained XMM-Newton and NuSTAR deep observations for them. We performed detailed spectral analysis of their quasi-simultaneous soft and hard X-ray data, in order to constrain the parameters of their coronae. Using a phenomenological cut-off power-law model, with the inclusion of a reflection component, we derived rest-frame values of the high energy cut-off of $E_{cut}=106^{+102}_{-37}$ keV and $E_{cut}=66^{+17}_{-12}$ keV, respectively. Comptonization models consistently give as best-fit parameters electron temperatures of $\sim45$ keV and $\sim28$ keV, respectively, and optically thick coronae ($��>1$). X-ray emission from QSOs has been used to assess SMBH accretion properties up to $z$~6. However, at $z>6$ only ~15 QSOs are covered by sensitive X-ray observations, preventing a statistically significant investigation of the X-ray properties of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe. We present new Chandra observations of 10 $z>6$ QSOs, selected to have virial black-hole mass estimates from Mg II line spectroscopy. Adding archival X-ray data for an additional 15 $z>6$ QSOs, we investigate the X-ray properties of the QSO population in the first Gyr of the Universe, focusing in particular on the $L_{UV}-L_{X}$ relation, which is traced by the $\alpha_{ox}$ parameter, and the shape of their X-ray spectra. We performed photometric analyses to derive estimates of the X-ray luminosities, and thus the $\alpha_{ox}$ values and bolometric corrections ($K_{bol}=L_{bol}/L_{X}$). We compared the resulting $\alpha_{ox}$ and $K_{bol}$ distributions with the results found for QSO samples at lower redshift. Finally, we performed a basic X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest $z>6$ QSOs to derive their individual photon indices, and joint spectral analysis of the whole sample to estimate the average photon index. We confirm a lack of significant evolution of $\alpha_{ox}$ with redshift, extending the results from previous works up to $z>6$, and the trend of an increasing bolometric correction with increasing luminosity found for QSOs at lower redshifts. The average power-law photon index of our sample ($\Gamma=2.20_{-0.34}^{+0.39}$ and $\Gamma=2.13_{-0.13}^{+0.13}$ for sources with $30$ net counts, respectively) is slightly steeper than, but still consistent with, typical QSOs at $z=1-6$. All these results point toward a lack of substantial evolution of the inner accretion-disk/hot-corona structure in QSOs from low redshift to $z>6$. We present a new catalogue of ~2,400 optically selected quasars with spectroscopic redshifts and X-ray observations from either Chandra or XMM-Newton. The sample can be used to investigate the non-linear relation between the UV and X-ray luminosity of quasars, and to build a Hubble diagram up to redshift z~7.5. We selected sources that are neither reddened by dust in the optical/UV nor obscured by gas in the X-rays, and whose X-ray fluxes are free from flux-limit related biases. After checking for any possible systematics, we confirm, in agreement with our previous works, that (i) the X-ray to UV relation provides distance estimates matching those from supernovae up to z~1.5, and (ii) its slope shows no redshift evolution up to z~5. We provide a full description of the methodology for testing cosmological models, further supporting a trend whereby the Hubble diagram of quasars is well reproduced by the standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model up to z~1.5-2, but strong deviations emerge at higher redshifts. Since we have minimized all non-negligible systematic effects, and proven the stability of the $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm UV}$ relation at high redshifts, we conclude that an evolution of the expansion rate of the Universe should be considered as a possible explanation for the observed deviation, rather than some systematic (redshift-dependent) effect associated with high-redshift quasars., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Galaxy clusters in the local universe descend from high-redshift overdense regions known as protoclusters. The large gas reservoirs and high rate of galaxy interaction in protoclusters are expected to trigger star-formation activity and luminous SMBH accretion in the host galaxies. We investigated the AGN content of a gas-rich and starbursting protocluster at $z=4$, known as the Distant Red Core (DRC). We observed with Chandra (139 ks) the 13 identified members of the structure, and searched for luminous and possibly obscured AGN among them. We also tested whether a hidden AGN can power the $Ly\alpha$ blob (LAB) detected with VLT/MUSE in the DRC. We detected obscured X-ray emission from the two most gas-rich members of the DRC, named DRC-1 and DRC-2. Both of them are resolved into multiple interacting clumps in high-resolution ALMA and HST observations. In particular, DRC-2 is found to host a luminous ($L_{2-10\,\mathrm{keV}}\approx3\times10^{45}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$) Compton-thick ($N_H\gtrsim10^{24}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$) QSO, comparable to the most luminous QSOs known at all cosmic times. The AGN fraction among DRC members is consistent with results found for lower redshift protoclusters. However, X-ray stacking analysis reveals that SMBH accretion is likely also taking place in other DRC galaxies that are not detected individually by Chandra. Our results point toward the presence of a strong link between large gas reservoirs, galaxy interactions, and luminous and obscured nuclear activity in protocluster members. The powerful and obscured QSO detected in DRC-2 is likely powering the nearby LAB detected with VLT/MUSE, possibly through photoionization; however, we propose that the diffuse $Ly\alpha$ emission may be due to gas shocked by a massive outflow launched by DRC-2 over a $\approx10$ kpc scale., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Population synthesis models of actively accreting super-massive black holes (or active galactic nuclei -- AGN) predict a large fraction that must grow behind dense, obscuring screens of gas and dust. Deep X-ray surveys are thought to have provided the most complete and unbiased samples of AGN, but there is strong observational evidence that a portion of the population of obscured AGN is being missed. In this paper we use a sample of AGN derived from the deepest X-ray survey to date, the Chandra 7Ms GOODS-South Survey, to investigate the nature of low flux X-ray sources. We make full use of the extensive multi-wavelength coverage of the GOODS-South field, and cross-match our objects with wavelengths from the Radio to the IR. We find the low X-ray flux AGN in our sample have X-ray luminosities that indicate low-luminosity AGN classification, while their radio, infrared and optical counterparts indicate moderate to powerful AGN classification. We find the predicted column densities is on average an order of magnitude higher than the calculated column densities via X-ray detections for X-ray faint sources. We interpret our results as evidence of obscured AGN disguising as low-luminosity AGN via their X-ray luminosities. When we compare the estimation of the obscured AGN space density with and without these objects, we find a difference of 40% in the lowest X-ray luminosity regime probed by our sample., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

Context. Obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) represent a significant fraction of the entire AGN population, especially at high redshift (∼70% at z = 3 − 5). They are often characterized by the presence of large gas and dust reservoirs that are thought to sustain and possibly obscure vigorous star formation processes that make these objects shine at FIR and submillimeter wavelengths. Studying the physical properties of obscured AGN and their host galaxies is crucial to shedding light on the early stages of a massive system lifetime. Aims. We aim to investigate the contribution of the interstellar medium (ISM) to the obscuration of quasars in a sample of distant highly star forming galaxies and to unveil their morphological and kinematics properties. Methods. We exploit Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Cycle 4 observations of the continuum (∼2.1 mm) and high-J CO emission of a sample of six X-ray selected, FIR detected galaxies hosting an obscured AGN at zspec > 2.5 in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South. We measured the masses and sizes of the dust and molecular gas by fitting the images, visibilities, and spectra, and we derived the gas density and column density on the basis of a uniform sphere geometry. Finally, we compared the measured column densities with those derived from the Chandra X-ray spectra. Results. We detected both the continuum and line emission for three sources for which we measured both the flux density and size. For the undetected sources, we derived an upper limit on the flux density from the root mean square of the images. We found that the detected galaxies are rich in gas and dust (molecular gas mass in the range < 0.5–2.7 × 1010 M⊙ for αCO = 0.8 and up to ∼2 × 1011 M⊙ for αCO = 6.5, and dust mass < 0.9–4.9 × 108 M⊙) and generally compact (gas major axis 2.1–3.0 kpc, dust major axis 1.4–2.7 kpc). The column densities associated with the ISM are on the order of 1023 − 24 cm−2, which is comparable with those derived from the X-ray spectra. For the detected sources we also derived dynamical masses in the range 0.8–3.7 × 1010 M⊙. Conclusions. We conclude that the ISM of high redshift galaxies can substantially contribute to nuclear obscuration up to the Compton-thick (> 1024 cm−2) regime. In addition, we found that all the detected sources show a velocity gradient reminding one rotating system, even though two of them show peculiar features in their morphology that can be associated with a chaotic, possibly merging, structure.

We present an X-ray point-source catalog from the XMM-Large Scale Structure survey region (XMM-LSS), one of the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS) fields. We target the XMM-LSS region with $1.3$ Ms of new XMM-Newton AO-15 observations, transforming the archival X-ray coverage in this region into a 5.3 deg$^2$ contiguous field with uniform X-ray coverage totaling $2.7$ Ms of flare-filtered exposure, with a $46$ ks median PN exposure time. We provide an X-ray catalog of 5242 sources detected in the soft (0.5-2 keV), hard (2-10 keV), and/or full (0.5-10 keV) bands with a 1% expected spurious fraction determined from simulations. A total of 2381 new X-ray sources are detected compared to previous source catalogs in the same area. Our survey has flux limits of $1.7\times10^{-15}$, $1.3\times10^{-14}$, and $6.5\times10^{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over 90% of its area in the soft, hard, and full bands, respectively, which is comparable to those of the XMM-COSMOS survey. We identify multiwavelength counterpart candidates for 99.9% of the X-ray sources, of which 93% are considered as reliable based on their matching likelihood ratios. The reliabilities of these high-likelihood-ratio counterparts are further confirmed to be $\approx 97$% reliable based on deep Chandra coverage over $\approx 5$% of the XMM-LSS region. Results of multiwavelength identifications are also included in the source catalog, along with basic optical-to-infrared photometry and spectroscopic redshifts from publicly available surveys. We compute photometric redshifts for X-ray sources in 4.5 deg$^2$ of our field where forced-aperture multi-band photometry is available; $>70$% of the X-ray sources in this subfield have either spectroscopic or high-quality photometric redshifts., MNRAS, accepted. 34 pages, 25 figures, and 8 tables. We observed the FRII radio galaxy 3C459 (z=0.22) with the MUSE spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) as part of the MURALES project (a MUse RAdio Loud Emission line Snapshot survey). We detected diffuse nuclear emission and a filamentary ionized gas structure forming a one-sided, triangular-shaped region extending out to $\sim$80 kpc. The central emission line region is dominated by two compact knots of similar flux: the first (N1) cospatial with the radio core and the (N2) second located 1.2" (5.3 kpc) to the SE. The two regions differ dramatically from the point of view of velocity (with an offset of ~400 km/s), line widths, and line ratios. This suggests that we are observing a dual AGN system formed by a radio loud AGN and type 2 QSO companion, which is the result of the recent merger that also produced its disturbed host morphology. The alternative possibility that N2 is just a bright emission line knot resulting from, for example, a jet-cloud interaction, is disfavored because of 1) the presence of a high ionization bicone whose apex is located at N2; 2) the observed narrow line widths; 3) its line luminosity (~10^42 erg s-1) typical of luminous QSOs; and 4) its location, which is offset from the jet path.
