The electronic excitation occurring on adsorbates at ultrafast time scales from optical lasers that initiate surface chemical reactions is still an open question. Here, we report the ultrafast temporal evolution of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) of a simple well known adsorbate prototype system, namely carbon (C) atoms adsorbed on a nickel (Ni(100)) surface, following intense laser optical pumping at 400 nm. We observe ultrafast (~100 fs) changes in both XAS and XES showing clear signatures of the formation of a hot electron-hole pair distribution on the adsorbate. This is followed by slower changes on a few ps time scale, shown to be consistent with thermalization of the complete C/Ni system. The electronic characterization of the cyanuric acid both in gas phase and when embedded within an H-bonded scheme forming a monolayer on the Au(111) surface has been performed by means of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The experimental spectra at the N, O, and C K-edges have been assigned with the support of DFT calculations, and the combination between theory and experiment has allowed to us investigate the effect of the H-bonding intermolecular interaction on the spectra. In particular, the H-bond formation in the monolayer leads to a quenching of the N 1s NEXAFS resonances associated with transitions to the sigma empty orbitals localized on the N-H portion of the imide group. On the other hand, the pi* empty states remain substantially unperturbed. From a computational point of view, it has been shown that the DFT-TP scheme is not able to describe the N 1s NEXAFS spectra of these systems, and the configuration mixing has to be included, through the TDDFT approach in conjunction with the range-separated XC CAM-B3LYP functional, to obtain a correct reproduction of the N 1s core spectra.

In this paper we performed the deposition and self-assembly of a Pd-cyclometallated compound on Ag(1 1 0) surface for the first time. The system is investigated from the morphological and chemical point of view by scanning tunneling microscopy and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, respectively, and the results are validated by ab-initio calculations. Our combined experimental and theoretical study aims at elucidating the atomistic details of the chemical steps following Pd cyclometallate deposition on the metallic substrate. To do that, we analyze the electronic and chemical properties of the species present on the surface at the end of the preparation process at room temperature and at 150 degrees C. We observe an unexpected complex chemistry: on one side, the organometallic molecules are found to dissociate into fragments, forming a well-ordered metal-carbon network; on the other side, Pd atoms become buried in the bulk of the metal substrate following metal exchange with surface Ag atoms. The details of this mechanistic study reveal the active role played by the metal substrate in promoting the chemistry of the deposited Pd cyclometallates and could open new perspectives for the application of this class of materials in heterogeneous catalysis.

The Pd cyclometallated complex [(5-bromo-2-phenylpyridine)Pd(μ-Cl)]2 is deposited on Ag(1 1 0) at room temperature by sublimation in ultra-high vacuum. The thermal evolution of the system is followed by scanning tunnelling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, while the initial and final configurations are validated by ab-initio calculations. We observe the surface induced dissociation of the molecule and the occurrence of a cross coupling reaction between the two organic fragments, leading to the surface assisted synthesis of diphenyl-bipyridine molecules. Such a process, occurring with low probability at RT, is thermally activated and competes with desorption. At variance with most cross-coupling reactions at surfaces reported in literature, in this case the reactants come from the dissociation of the same compound so that only one precursor is employed, leading to a simplified preparation protocol. The Br and Cl atoms dissociated from the molecule bind to the surface and promote an extended surface reconstruction upon annealing, which was not observed previously upon deposition of halogenated aromatic compounds.

The journal of chemical physics 157(16), 164705 (2022). doi:10.1063/5.0114399, We report on carbon monoxide desorption and oxidation induced by 400 nm femtosecond laser excitation on the O/Ru(0001) surface probed by time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-XAS) at the carbon K-edge. The experiments were performed under constant background pressures of CO (6 × 10$^{−8}$ Torr) and O$_2$ (3 × 10$^{−8}$ Torr). Under these conditions, we detect two transient CO species with narrow 2$π^*$ peaks, suggesting little 2π* interaction with the surface. Based on polarization measurements, we find that these two species have opposing orientations: (1) CO favoring a more perpendicular orientation and (2) CO favoring a more parallel orientation with respect to the surface. We also directly detect gas-phase CO2 using a mass spectrometer and observe weak signatures of bent adsorbed CO2 at slightly higher x-ray energies than the 2$π^*$ region. These results are compared to previously reported TR-XAS results at the O K-edge, where the CO background pressure was three times lower (2 × 10$^{−8}$ Torr) while maintaining the same O$_2$ pressure. At the lower CO pressure, in the CO 2$π^*$ region, we observed adsorbed CO and a distribution of OC–O bond lengths close to the CO oxidation transition state, with little indication of gas-like CO. The shift toward “gas-like” CO species may be explained by the higher CO exposure, which blocks O adsorption, decreasing O coverage and increasing CO coverage. Crown ethers, assembled into a regular 2D array via a chemical guesthost recognition process, have been successfully employed to trap sodium atoms on a surface, under ultra- high vacuum conditions.

The authors report for the first time on the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp. fragile (Suringar) Hariot from the Adriatic coast of the Abruzzi Region of Italy (central Adriatic Sea). Several thalli have been found stranded on the beach of Silvi Marina since November 2015. This species, native to East Asia, has widely invaded several locations of the Mediterranean where it has been probably introduced through boating or shellfish aquaculture.

Long-lived excitons formed upon visible light absorption play an essential role in photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and even in high-density information storage. Here, we describe a self-assembled two-dimensional metal-organic crystal, composed of graphene-supported macrocycles, each hosting a single FeN4 center, where a single carbon monoxide molecule can adsorb. In this heme-like biomimetic model system, excitons are generated by visible laser light upon a spin transition associated with the layer 2D crystallinity, and are simultaneously detected via the carbon monoxide ligand stretching mode at room temperature and near-ambient pressure. The proposed mechanism is supported by the results of infrared and time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopies, and by ab initio theoretical methods, opening a path towards the handling of exciton dynamics on 2D biomimetic crystals., Long-lived excitons in a two-dimensional metal-organic crystal can be produced by visible light and detected by infrared radiation. Here, the authors show that the excitonic state of a biomimetic macrocycle can be ‘read’ by measuring the vibrations of an adsorbed ligand.

The on-surface synthesis of boroxine-containing molecules can be a convenient method of introducing specific functionalities. Here, we show the validity of a previously described synthesis protocol on the Au (111) surface by applying it to a different molecular precursor. We study in detail the assembly of the precursor, highlighting possible intermediate stages of the condensation process. We combine scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray spectroscopies to fully characterize both the morphology and the electronic properties of the system. DFT calculations are presented to assign the main electronic transitions originating the B K-edge absorption spectrum. The study paves the way to a facile strategy for functionalizing a surface with molecules of tailored sizes and compositions.

Physical review letters 127(1), 016802 (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.127.016802, We use a pump-probe scheme to measure the time evolution of the C K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum from CO/Ru(0001) after excitation by an ultrashort high-intensity optical laser pulse. Because of the short duration of the x-ray probe pulse and precise control of the pulse delay, the excitation-induced dynamics during the first picosecond after the pump can be resolved with unprecedented time resolution. By comparing with density functional theory spectrum calculations, we find high excitation of the internal stretch and frustrated rotation modes occurring within 200 fs of laser excitation, as well as thermalization of the system in the picosecond regime. The ���100 fs initial excitation of these CO vibrational modes is not readily rationalized by traditional theories of nonadiabatic coupling of adsorbates to metal surfaces, e.g., electronic frictions based on first order electron-phonon coupling or transient population of adsorbate resonances. We suggest that coupling of the adsorbate to nonthermalized electron-hole pairs is responsible for the ultrafast initial excitation of the modes., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

The incorporation of singlet fission (SF) chromophores in solar cells is expected to bring significant increases in the power conversion efficiency thanks to multiexciton generation. However, efficient charge generation in the device is determined by the energy level alignment (ELA) between the active materials, which should favor exciton transport and separation under illumination. By combining ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and optical differential reflectance measurements, we determine the ELA in a prototypical SF heterojunction between pentacene (Pc) and perylene-tetracarboxylic-diimide (PTCDI) grown on Ag(111). Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on such a system reveals light-induced modifications of the ELA, by measuring the transient shift of the core level photoemission lines we observe an accumulation of long-lived holes in the PTCDI within the first hundred picoseconds after the optical pump.

OBJECTIVES: This observational, cross-sectional study based aimed to test whether heart failure (HF)-disease management program (DMP) components are influencing care and clinical decision-making in Brazil. METHODS: The survey respondents were cardiologists recommended by experts in the field and invited to participate in the survey via printed form or email. The survey consisted of 29 questions addressing site demographics, public versus private infrastructure, HF baseline data of patients, clinical management of HF, performance indicators, and perceptions about HF treatment. RESULTS: Data were obtained from 98 centers (58% public and 42% private practice) distributed across Brazil. Public HF-DMPs compared to private HF-DMP were associated with a higher percentage of HF-DMP-dedicated services (79% vs 24%; OR: 12, 95% CI: 94-34), multidisciplinary HF (MHF)-DMP [84% vs 65%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-8), HF educational programs (49% vs 18%; OR: 4; 95% CI: 1-2), written instructions before hospital discharge (83% vs 76%; OR: 1; 95% CI: 0-5), rehabilitation (69% vs 39%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-9), monitoring (44% vs 29%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 1-5), guideline-directed medical therapy-HF use (94% vs 85%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 0-15), and less B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) dosage (73% vs 88%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-9), and key performance indicators (37% vs 60%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-7). In comparison to non- MHF-DMP, MHF-DMP was associated with more educational initiatives (42% vs 6%; OR: 12; 95% CI: 1-97), written instructions (83% vs 68%; OR: 2: 95% CI: 1-7), rehabilitation (69% vs 17%; OR: 11; 95% CI: 3-44), monitoring (47% vs 6%; OR: 14; 95% CI: 2-115), GDMT-HF (92% vs 83%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 0-15). In addition, there were less use of BNP as a biomarker (70% vs 84%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 1-8) and key performance indicators (35% vs 51%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 91,6) in the non-MHF group. Physicians considered changing or introducing new medications mostly when patients were hospitalized or when observing worsening disease and/or symptoms. Adherence to drug treatment and non-drug treatment factors were the greatest medical problems associated with HF treatment. CONCLUSION: HF-DMPs are highly heterogeneous. New strategies for HF care should consider the present study highlights and clinical decision-making processes to improve HF patient care.

The self-assembly of leucoquinizarin molecules on Au(111) surfaces is shown to be characterized by the molecules mostly being in their keto-enolic tautomeric form, with evidence of their temporary switching to other tautomeric forms. This reveals a metastable chemistry of the assembled molecules, to be considered for their possible employment in the formation of more complex hetero-organic interfaces.

The thermal treatment of a monolayer of 1-naphthylmethylamine (NMA) on Ni(1 1 1) surface reveals a complex chemistry promoted by the high surface reactivity. Both the amino-terminated functional group and the naphthalene body of NMA undergo a progressive dehydrogenation, which eventually leads to the coalescence of the molecules. As a result, 2D structures of increasing size are synthesized on the surface, characterized by a graphene-like lattice in which nitrogen atoms are mainly incorporated as pyridinic substitutional defects. In this paper, we show the evidence of the formation of extended nitrogen-doped graphene (N-GR) domains at temperatures as low as 300 °C, with band dispersion measurements that reveal p-type doping.

The transient dynamics of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules on a Ru(0001) surface following femtosecond optical laser pump excitation has been studied by monitoring changes in the unoccupied electronic structure using an ultrafast X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) probe. The particular symmetry of perpendicularly chemisorbed CO on the surface is exploited to investigate how the molecular orientation changes with time by varying the polarization of the FEL pulses. The time evolution of spectral features corresponding to the desorption precursor state was well distinguished due to the narrow line-width of the C K-edge in the X-ray absorption (XA) spectrum, illustrating that CO molecules in the precursor state rotated freely and resided on the surface for several picoseconds. Most of the CO molecules trapped in the precursor state ultimately cooled back down to the chemisorbed state, while we estimate that similar to 14.5 +/- 4.9% of the molecules in the precursor state desorbed into the gas phase. It was also observed that chemisorbed CO molecules diffused over the metal surface from on-top sites toward highly coordinated sites. In addition, a new "vibrationally hot precursor" state was identified in the polarization-dependent XA spectra.

The energy level alignment in the heterojunction formed by tetracene and copper phthalocyanine grown on the Ag(111) substrate has been studied for two different sequences of layer stacking. Filled and empty molecular levels as well as charge transfer states have been characterized by combining ultraviolet and two-photon photoemission spectroscopies. It is shown that the layer in contact with the substrate determines the molecular arrangements of the whole system, thus inducing different interface dipoles at the heterojunction, depending on the stacking sequence. Such dipoles strongly influence the exciton dynamics and charge separation at the interface. The accumulation of the charge carriers in the heterojunction has been observed by measuring the transient shift of core level photoemission lines, which arises after the resonant excitation of either of the two molecular constituents.

Time-resolved X-ray spectroscopies have the potential of unveiling ultrafast processes with chemical sensitivity, but their widespread application is still withheld by technical and experimental constraints on two levels: the count rate and the amount of signal to be measured. In this paper, we will give a brief overview of the available pulsed X-ray sources focusing in particular on those delivering photons with energies inside the water window (280-550 eV), thus allowing to access the C1s, N1s and O1s core levels which are relevant for the characterization of thin organic films and small molecules adsorbed on surfaces. We will mainly discuss the photon fluxes delivered by such sources in relation to their repetition rates, and we will see how these factors affect time-resolved measurements. The main purpose of this work is to discuss the most crucial parameter to adjust in pump-probe spectroscopies: the excitation density, which corresponds to the fraction of photoexcited molecules/atoms. We show that such quantity may be increased up to roughly 25% in gas phase and other robust samples, however, due to a lower damage threshold, in organic films it is typically constrained to be in the order of 1-5%. Despite the initially limited population of excited states in the latter case, we show that the evolution of the system may lead to a collective response of the material, which entirely modifies the measured core level line shape, thus providing a clear signal that may nonetheless offer valuable insights into the dynamics of the studied process.

The knowledge of the picosecond dynamics of the energy level alignment between donor and acceptor materials in organic photovoltaic devices under working conditions is a challenge for fundamental material research. We measured by means of time-resolved Resonant X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (RPES) the energy level alignment in ZnPc/C 60 films. We employed 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses to pump the system simulating sunlight excitation and X-rays from the synchrotron as a probe. We measured changes in the valence bands due to pump induced modifications of the interface dipole. Our measurements prove the feasibility of time-resolved RPES with high repetition rate sources.

Singlet fission, the generation of two triplet excited states from the absorption of a single photon, may potentially increase solar energy conversion efficiency. A major roadblock in realizing this potential is the limited number of molecules available with high singlet fission yields and sufficient chemical stability. Here, we demonstrate a strategy for developing singlet fission materials in which we start with a stable molecular platform and use strain to tune the singlet and triplet energies. Using perylene diimide as a model system, we tune the singlet fission energetics from endoergic to exoergic or iso-energetic by straining the molecular backbone. The result is an increase in the singlet fission rate by 2 orders of magnitude. This demonstration opens a door to greatly expanding the molecular toolbox for singlet fission.

Singlet fission is a photophysical process in which an optically excited singlet exciton is converted into two triplet excitons. Singlet fission sensitized solar cells are expected to display a greatly enhanced power conversion efficiency compared to conventional single-junction cells, but the efficient design of such devices relies on the selection of materials capable of harvesting triplets generated in the fission chromophore. To this aim, the possibility of measuring triplet exciton dynamics with chemical selectivity paves the way for the rational design of complex heterojunctions, with optimized triplet conversion. Here we exploit the chemical sensitivity of X-ray absorption spectroscopy to track triplet exciton dynamics at the picosecond timescale in multilayer films of pentacene, the archetypal singlet fission material. We experimentally identify the signature of the triplet exciton in the Carbon K-edge absorption spectrum and measure its lifetime of about 300 ps. Our results are supported by state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Excitons are neutral quasiparticles, which are investigated as a potential component to improve the performance of photovoltaic cells however it is first necessary to develop methods to achieve multiexciton generation such as singlet fission. To this end the authors theoretically and experimentally demonstrate long-lived triplet exciton states via singlet fission enabled by the intermolecular coupling geometries in pentacene films.

In this report we illustrate the instrumental developments involving the branchline of the ALOISA beamline at the Elettra synchrotron, with the setup of the ANCHOR-SUNDYN endstation. The ANCHOR experimental chamber is designed for the study of in-situ prepared organo-metallic hybrid interfaces, by means of synchrotron based soft x-ray spectroscopic techniques. SUNDYN is a femtosecond pulse width laser setup, optimized for the optical pump of organic systems. It has been integrated in the ANCHOR endstation in order to perform time resolved spectroscopies at MegaHertz repetition rate. By combining resonant photoemission spectroscopy and pump-probe X-ray spectroscopies in the same chamber, we can study the dynamics of the electronic structure of organo-metallic interfaces from the femtosecond to the nanosecond timescales. We provide here a detailed description of this setup and discuss some case study measurements obtained during the commissioning of the apparatus.

FUNDAMENTO: A eficácia dos stents farmacológicos em reduzir os índices de eventos cardíacos não é uniforme a todos os subgrupos de lesões ou pacientes. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a evolução clínica tardia dos pacientes submetidos a implante de stents farmacológicos nas lesões ateroscleróticas da artéria descendente anterior e identificar, entre as características clínicas, angiográficas e do ultra-som intravascular, quais as que permitem predizer risco de eventos cardíacos. MÉTODOS: De maio de 2002 a agosto de 2005, foram tratados 205 pacientes com implante de 236 stents farmacológicos guiados pelo ultra-som intravascular. RESULTADOS: Com um acompanhamento médio de 711 dias, a taxa de trombose do stent foi de 0,48%, a mesma observada para infarto agudo do miocárdio ou cirurgia de revascularização. A taxa de revascularização da lesão tratada foi de 7,31% e a taxa global de eventos de 10,24%. Os indicadores de eventos, conforme análise multivariada, foram o implante de mais de um stent na mesma artéria, lesões concêntricas e área mínima intra-stent medida pelo ultra-som intravascular menor que 3,88 mm². CONCLUSÃO: Baseados nos dados obtidos, concluímos que a revascularização da artéria descendente anterior com implante de stents farmacológicos escolhidos e otimizados pelo ultra-som intravascular apresenta baixo índice de eventos tardios. O implante de dois stents farmacológicos para o tratamento das lesões longas foi o principal fator independente para a ocorrência de eventos tardios. A área luminal final maior que 3,88 mm² obtidos nos segmentos de pequenos diâmetros de referência é um indicador independente de evolução livre de eventos.FUNDAMENTO: La eficacia de los stents farmacológicos para reducir los índices de eventos cardiacos no es la misma para todos los subgrupos de lesiones o pacientes. El área luminal final mayor que 3,88 mm², obtenida en los segmentos de pequeños diámetros de referencia es un indicador independiente de evolución libre de eventos.BACKGROUND: The efficacy of pharmacological stents in decreasing the incidence of cardiac events is not homogeneous for all lesions or patient subgroups. OBJECTIVE: 1) To evaluate the late clinical evolution of patients submitted to pharmacological stent implantation in atherosclerotic lesions of the left anterior descending artery; 2) to identify, among the clinical, angiographic and intravascular ultrasonographic characteristics, the ones predictive of cardiac event risk. METHODS: From May 2002 to August 2005, 205 patients were treated with 236 pharmacological stent implants, guided by the intravascular US (IVUS). RESULTS: After a mean follow-up period of 711 days, the rate of stent thrombosis was 0.48%, the same observed for acute myocardial infarction or revascularization surgery. The revascularization rate of the treated lesion was 7.31% and the general event rate was 10.24%. The event indicators, according to the multivariate analysis were the implant of more than one stent in the same artery, concentric lesions and the minimal intra-stent area measured by IVUS < 3.88 mm². CONCLUSION: Based on the data obtained, we conclude that the revascularization of the left anterior descending artery with pharmacological stent implant, chosen and optimized by IVUS, presents a low incidence of late events. The implant of two pharmacological stents for the treatment of long lesions was the main independent factor for the occurrence of late events. The final luminal area > 3.88 mm² obtained in the small reference-diameter segments is an independent indicator of event-free evolution.

In the Mediterranean area land degradation phenomena are becoming more and more important due to future climate change and increasing climate variability, as highlighted in recent global assessment projects such as the "Millennium Ecosystem Assessment" or "The Dialogue on Water and Climate". Thus, there is consistent evidence that extreme events such as droughts and floods are more frequent than before. On the other hand the Mediterranean area is strongly influenced by human activities such as cultivation over hundreds of years. However, in the last decades the cultivation methods and techniques are subject to profound changes such as mechanization, use of fertilizers and pesticides, remodellation of entire hillslopes etc. This particular situation leads to, and aggravates the existing stress on land resources. As a result, land degradation and soil erosion phenomena are leading to decreasing soil productivity or the loss of fertile top soil and related water quality and quantity issues. The Centre for Soil Erosion Studies (CRES) in Grosseto, Tuscany recently started a study to identify and monitor changes of land-use in southern Tuscany, Italy. The aim of this study is to assess land degradation sensitivity by scenario analysis. As a proxi for land degradation surface wash erosion processes such as rill and interill erosion processes are chosen. These present day processes are identified by aerial photo interpretation and subsequently modelled with a simple RUSLE approach on a monthly basis. In this study boundary conditions such as future precipitation were taken from the A2 future climate scenario published by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)-Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES). Moreover, current land-use was identified from aerial photographs and future land-use scenarios were developed considering ecological and socio-economical issues for present day conditions of the test area. Subsequently, the different climate and land-use scenarios were analysed to study soil erosion susceptibility on the landscape scale. The study shows that even with a decline in precipitation volume until 2070, in some months higher erosion rates occur due to higher rainfall erosivity. Furthermore, land-use changes play an important role for soil erosion susceptibility. As shown, the various scenarios can effectively reduce or enhance soil erosion. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: To evaluate whether a short-term moderate intensity exercise program could change inflammatory parameters, and improve different components of metabolic syndrome in sedentary patients. Methods: Sixteen patients completed the 12-week program of supervised exercise, which consisted of a 40 to 50 minutes of walking, 3 times a week, reaching 50 to 60% of the heart rate reserve. The parameters evaluated before and after intervention were waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, C-reactive protein and interleukin 8. Results: There was a significant reduction in waist circumference (102.1±7.5cm to 100.8±7.4cm; p=0.03) and in body mass index (29.7±3.2kg/m2 versus 29.3±3.5kg/m2; p=0.03). LaMMA Consortium, with collaboration of Regione Toscana and Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (MiBAC), has created the web Geographical Information System for Cultural Heritage and Protected Landscape of Regione Toscana. This system now makes it possible to access the digital maps and the digital archives of archaeological, architectural and landscape related restrictions over the entire region. In order to continuously update the realized system for maintaining its utility and validity, Regione Toscana together with MiBAC signed a protocol agreement (2004), according to which every new restriction measure issued is sent as a copy also to the regional offices and then to LaMMA Consortium, that attends to update the digital archives and the digital maps. Thanks to this agreement, the system counts today over 18,000 measures, with an average yearly increase of almost 250 measures, that determine restrictions for 9.000 areas. These con-siderations, coupled with the recent spread of somemosquito vector borne diseases in Europe [6,7] and theincreasing number of imported malaria cases recordedin the Continent [8] have renewed interest in the possi-ble reintroduction of malaria in Southern Europe [7-9],particularly in the countries facing the Western Medi-terranean Basin, where potential Anopheline vectors arestill present [10-13]. Moreover, in recent years auto-chthonous malaria cases have been sporadically reportedin Italy, France, Spain and Greece [14-20].In 2005, a five-year study was implemented in Italy, aswell as in other South European countries, with the aim toassess the status of the local potential malaria vectors andthe possible re-introduction of malaria transmission[21-25]. In Italy, the selected study area was the Maremmaplain, a region that was hyperendemic for malaria until60 years ago [26-28] and that more recently was recog-nized as the major “at risk” area for the malaria reintro-duction into Italy [14,29,30].In Maremma, after the malaria eradication campaign(1947-1951), Anopheles labranchiae, the main endophilicvector of the Anopheles maculipennis complex was dra-matically reduced in abundance. However, in subsequentyears, the species has progressively re-colonized most ofthe area coming back to substantial densities [31-33].This was mainly due to the introduction of intensive ricecultivation in the early 1970s. Since then, Maremma hasbeen subjected to continuous entomological surveillancethat was intensified after1997, when an autochthonousPlasmodium vivax malaria case, transmitted byAn. lab-ranchiae, occurred in the Province of Grosseto [14]. Thestudies carried out in the area since eradication, providesa database that allowed a follow-up the history of malariaand its vectors in Maremma over the past 60 years. Start-ing from the findings of the most recent entomologicaland environmental studies [23,34], the present study waschosen to evaluate the malariogenic potential of the areausing a multifactorial approach.Methods

For the first time, one female individual of blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896, a species native to the western Atlantic coasts, is reported from Abruzzi waters (central Adriatic Sea).
