We investigate the influence of the finite Larmor radius on the dynamics of guiding-center test particles subjected to an $\mathbf{E} \times \mathbf{B}$ drift in a large aspect-ratio tokamak. For that, we adopt the drift-wave test particle transport model presented by W. Horton [Physics of Plasmas \textbf{5}, 3910 (1998)] and introduce a second-order gyro-averaged extension, which accounts for the finite Larmor radius effect that arises from a spatially varying electric field. Using this extended model, we numerically examine the influence of the finite Larmor radius on chaotic transport and the formation of transport barriers. For non-monotonic plasma profiles, we show that the twist condition of the dynamical system, i.e.,\ KAM theorem's non-degeneracy condition for the Hamiltonian, is violated along a special curve, which, under non-equilibrium conditions, exhibits significant resilience to destruction, thereby inhibiting chaotic transport. This curve acts as a robust barrier to transport and is usually called shearless transport barrier. While varying the amplitude of the electrostatic perturbations, we analyze bifurcation diagrams of the shearless barriers and escape rates of orbits to explore the impact of the finite Larmor radius on controlling chaotic transport. Our findings show that increasing the Larmor radius enhances the robustness of transport barriers, as larger electrostatic perturbation amplitudes are required to disrupt them. Additionally, as the Larmor radius increases, even in the absence of transport barriers, we observe a reduction in the escape rates, indicating a decrease in chaotic transport., Comment: Forthcoming in Physics of Plasmas

Complex systems have motivated continuing interest from the scientific community, leading to new concepts and methods. Growing systems represent a case of particular interest, as their topological, geometrical, and also dynamical properties change along time, as new elements are incorporated into the existing structure. In the present work, an approach is the case in which systems grown radially around some straight axis of reference, such as particle deposition on electrodes, or urban expansion along avenues, roads, coastline, or rivers, among several other possibilities. More specifically, we aim at characterizing the topological properties of simulated growing structures, which are represented as graphs, in terms of a measurement corresponding to the accessibility of each involved node. The incorporation of new elements (nodes and links) is performed preferentially to the angular orientation respectively to the reference axis. The development of techniques that reduce experimental complexity and minimize errors is an utmost importance for modeling quantum channels. In general, quantum simulators are focused on universal algorithms, whose practical implementation requires extra qubits necessary to control the quantum operations. In contrast, our technique is based on finding a way to optimally sum Kraus operators. These operators provide us with an experimentally simplified setup where only a degree of freedom is needed to implement any one-qubit quantum channel. Therefore, using entanglement polarized photon pairs and post-processing techniques, we experimentally built the Kraus maps, carrying out unitary and projection operations.

In tokamaks, modification of the plasma profiles can reduce plasma transport, improving particle confinement. However, this improvement is still not completely understood. In this work, we consider a drift wave test particle model to investigate the influence of the electric and magnetic field profiles on plasma transport. Test particle orbits subjected to ExB drift are numerically integrated and their transport coefficient is obtained. We conclude that sheared profiles reduce particle transport, even for high amplitude perturbations. In particular, nonmonotonic electric and magnetic fields produce shearless transport barriers, which are particularly resistant to perturbations and reduce even more the transport coefficient., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Recent advances regarding the interplay between ab initio calculations and metrology are reviewed, with particular emphasis on gas-based techniques used for temperature and pressure measurements. Since roughly 2010, several thermophysical quantities - in particular, virial and transport coefficients - can be computed from first principles without uncontrolled approximations and with rigorously propagated uncertainties. In the case of helium, computational results have accuracies that exceed the best experimental data by at least one order of magnitude and are suitable to be used in primary metrology. The availability of ab initio virial and transport coefficients contributed to the recent SI definition of temperature by facilitating measurements of the Boltzmann constant with unprecedented accuracy. Presently, they enable the development of primary standards of temperature in the range 2.5-552 K and pressure up to 7 MPa using acoustic gas thermometry, dielectric constant gas thermometry, and refractive index gas thermometry. These approaches will be reviewed, highlighting the effect of first-principles data on their accuracy. The recent advances in electronic structure calculations that enabled highly accurate solutions for the many-body interaction potentials and polarizabilities of atoms - particularly helium - will be described, together with the subsequent computational methods, most often based on quantum statistical mechanics and its path-integral formulation, that provide thermophysical properties and their uncertainties. Similar approaches for molecular systems, and their applications, are briefly discussed. Current limitations and expected future lines of research are assessed., Comment: 59 pages, 9 figures

Quantum thermodynamics seeks to extend non-equilibrium stochastic thermodynamics to small quantum systems where non-classical features are essential to its description. Such a research area has recently provided meaningful theoretical and experimental advances by exploring the wealth and the power of quantum features along with informational aspects of a system's thermodynamics. The relevance of such investigations is related to the fact that quantum technological devices are currently at the forefront of science and engineering applications. This short review article provides an overview of some concepts in quantum thermodynamics highlighting test-of-principles experiments using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques.

Employing currently available quantum technology, we design and implement a non-classically correlated SWAP heat engine that allows to achieve an efficiency above the standard Carnot limit. Such an engine also boosts the amount of extractable work, in a wider parameter window, with respect to engine's cycle in the absence of initial quantum correlations in the working substance. The boosted efficiency arises from a trade-off between the entropy production and the consumption of quantum correlations during the full thermodynamic cycle. We derive a generalized second-law limit for the correlated cycle and implement a proof-of-principle demonstration of the engine efficiency enhancement by effectively tailoring the thermal engine on a cloud quantum processor.

Area-preserving nontwist maps are used to describe a broad range of physical systems. In those systems, the violation of the twist condition leads to nontwist characteristic phenomena, such as reconnection-collision sequences and shearless invariant curves that act as transport barriers in the phase space. Although reported in numerical investigations, the shearless bifurcation, i.e., the emergence scenario of multiple shearless curves, is not well understood. In this work, we derive an area-preserving map as a local approximation of a particle transport model for confined plasmas. Multiple shearless curves are found in this area-preserving map, with the same shearless bifurcation scenario numerically observed in the original model. In tokamak-confined plasmas, particle transport can be reduced by modifying the radial electric field. In this paper, we investigate the influence of both a well-like and a hill-like shaped radial electric field profile on the creation of shearless transport barriers (STBs) at the plasma edge, which are a type of barrier that can prevent chaotic transport and are related to the presence of extreme values in the rotation number profile. For that, we apply an ExB drift model to describe test particle orbits in large aspect-ratio tokamaks. We show how these barriers depend on the electrostatic fluctuation amplitudes and on the width and depth (height) of the radial electric field well-like (hill-like) profile. We find that, as the depth (height) increases, the STB at the plasma edge becomes more resistant to fluctuations, enabling access to an improved confinement regime that prevents chaotic transport. We also present parameter spaces with the radial electric field parameters, indicating the STB existence for several electric field configurations at the plasma edge, for which we obtain a fractal structure at the barrier/non-barrier frontier, typical of quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems., Comment: 12 pages and 8 figures

Some internal transport barriers in tokamaks have been related to the vicinity of extrema of the plasma equilibrium profiles. This effect is numerically investigated by considering the guiding-center trajectories of plasma particles undergoing ExB drift motion, considering that the electric field has a stationary nonmonotonic radial profile and an electrostatic fluctuation. In addition, the equilibrium configuration has a nonmonotonic safety factor profile. The numerical integration of the equations of motion yields a symplectic map with shearless barriers. By changing the parameters of the safety factor profile, the appearance, and breakup of these shearless curves are observed. The successive shearless curves breakup and recovering is explained using concepts from bifurcation theory. We also present bifurcation sequences associated to the creation of multiple shearless curves. Phyllosilicate minerals, which form a class of naturally occurring layered materials (LMs), have been recently considered as a low-cost source of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Clinochlore [Mg5Al(AlSi3)O10(OH)8] is one of the most abundant phyllosilicate minerals in nature, exhibiting the capability to be mechanically exfoliated down to a few layers. An important characteristic clinochlore is the natural occurrence of defects and impurities which can strongly affect their optoelectronic properties, possibly in technologically interesting ways. In the present work, we carry out a thorough investigation of the clinochlore structure on both bulk and 2D exfoliated forms, discussing its optical features and the influence of the insertion of impurities on its macroscopic properties. Several experimental techniques are employed, followed by theoretical first-principles calculations considering several types of naturally-ocurring transition metal impurities in the mineral lattice and their effect on electronic and optical properties. We demonstrate the existence of requirements concerning surface quality and insulating properties of clinochlore that are mandatory for its suitable application in nanoelectronic devices. The results presented in this work provide important informations for clinochlore potential applications and establish a basis for further works that intend to optimize its properties to relevant 2D technological applications through defect engineering.

A quantum-controlled device may produce a scenario in which two general quantum operations can be performed in such a way that it is not possible to associate a definite order for the operations application. Such an indefinite causal order can be explored to produce nontrivial effects in quantum thermal devices. We investigate a measurement-powered thermal device that consists of generalized measurement channels with adjustable intensity parameters, where energy is exchanged with the apparatus in the form of work or heat. The measurement-based device can operate as a heat engine, a thermal accelerator, or a refrigerator, according to a measurement intensity setting. By employing a quantum switch of two measurement channels, we explore a thermal device fueled by an indefinite causal order. We also discuss how a coherent control over an indefinite causal order structure can change the operating regimes of the measurement-powered thermal device to produce an advantage when compared to a scenario with an incoherent control of the order switch., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, typos removed, closer to the published version

Naturally occurring van der Waals crystals have brought unprecedented interest to nanomaterial researchers in recent years. So far, more than 1800 layered materials (LMs) have been identified but only a few insulating and naturally occurring LMs were deeply investigated. Phyllosilicate minerals, which are a class of natural and abundant LMs, have been recently considered as a low-cost source of insulating nanomaterials. Within this family an almost barely explored material emerges: phlogopite [KMg3(AlSi3)O10(OH)2]. Here we carry out a high throughput characterization of this LM by employing several experimental techniques, corroborating the major findings with first-principles calculations. We show that monolayers (1L) and few-layers of this material are air and temperature stable, as well as easily obtained by the standard mechanical exfoliation technique, have an atomically flat surface, and lower bandgap than its bulk counterpart, an unusual trend in LMs. We also systematically study the basic properties of ultrathin phlogopite and demonstrate that natural phlogopite presents iron impurities in its crystal lattice, which decreases its bandgap from about 7 eV to 3.6 eV. Finally, we combine phlogopite crystals with 1L-WS2 in ultrathin van der Waals heterostructures and present a photoluminescence study, revealing a significant enhancement on the 1L-WS2 optical quality (i.e., higher recombination efficiency through neutral excitons) similarly to that obtained on 1L-WS2/hBN heterostructures. Our proof-of-concept study shows that phlogopite should be regarded as a good and promising candidate for LM-based applications as a low-cost layered nanomaterial.
