Textiles have been used in our daily life since antiquity in both economies and social relationships. Nowadays, there has never been a greater desire for intelligent materials. Smart fabric textiles with high-quality and high-performance fiber manufacturing with specific functions represented by clothing and apparel brands (such as astronaut suits that can regulate temperature and control muscle vibrations) are becoming increasingly prominent. Product applications also extend from the field of life clothing to the medical/health, ecology/environmental protection, and military/aerospace fields. In this context, this review proposes to demonstrate the recent advances and challenges regarding smart fabric textiles. The possibilities of innovative smart textiles extending the overall usefulness and functionalities of standard fabrics are immense in the fields of medical devices, fashion, entertainment, and defense, considering sufficient comfort as a parameter necessary for users to accept wearable devices. Smart textile devices require a multidisciplinary approach regarding the circuit design of the development of intelligent textiles, as the knowledge of intelligent materials, microelectronics, and chemistry are integrated with a deep understanding of textile production for optimum results.

This paper provides a full understanding of the pyrolysis mechanism of plant biomass (curaua) and cellulose – two materials that involve complex degradation stages. The chemical/physical reactions occurring in the corresponding mass loss stages are described in detail for each material. Multi-step degradation stages are identified by using Vyazovkin and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa methods and the individual contribution are discussed in terms of the chemical and physical steps involved in the process. The determination of multi-stages processes are rapidly determined applying an easy-to-use method as a first approach. We expect that this study helps to develop an understanding of the thermal degradation for future complex materials as well as to establish the initial guesses and to give an insight into the overall biomass decomposition. Final results can help to design of pyrolysis reactor and to develop new kinetic approaches.

Polysaccharides are formed by a long chain of monosaccharides, with the main function of promoting energetic and structural reserves for plants and animals. They can be applied as a base of electrolytes, using ionic liquids (ILs) as a solvent base. The study of electrolytes is an emerging field, as they are applied as secondary batteries, fuel cells, solar cells, supercapacitors and chemical sensors. They operate stably under extreme conditions, maintaining their high thermal stability. Furthermore, their low cost and environmentally safe character, compared to conventional electrolytes, have attracted considerable attention in the scientific field. ILs are composed entirely of ions and could be potentially applied as solvents. As electrolytes, ILs are environmentally friendly, and their use in combination with polysaccharides leads to a synergic effect. In the present study, a systematic review was performed of all papers published from 2014 to 2022 regarding ILs and polysaccharides through a search of three databases. Due to the large number of results found, only papers about electrolytes were considered and the main findings described. This study allows for easy identification of the most relevant fields of study with respect to ILs and polysaccharides, as well as the main gaps to be explored in the literature.

Lignocellulosic fibers are widely applied as reinforcement in polymer composites due to their properties. The thermal degradation behavior governs the maximum temperature at which the fiber can be applied without significant mass loss. It is possible to determine this temperature using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG). In particular, when curves are obtained at different heating rates, kinetic parameters can be determined by using Arrhenius-based equations, and more detailed characteristics of the material are obtained. However, every curve obtained at a distinct heating rate demands material, cost and time. Methods to predict thermogravimetric curves can be very useful in the materials science field, and in this sense, mathematical approaches are powerful tools, if well employed. For this reason, in the present study, thermogravimetric curves from curaua fiber were obtained at four different heating rates (5, 10, 20 and 40 °C·min−1) and Vyazovkin kinetic parameters were obtained using free available software. After, the experimental curves were fitted using an artificial neural network (ANN) approach followed by a Surface Response Methodology (SRM) aiming to obtain curves at any heating rate between the minimum and maximum experimental heating rates. Finally, Vyazovkin kinetic parameters were tested again, with the new predicted curves at the heating rates of 7, 15, 30 and 50 °C·min−1. Similar values of the kinetic parameters were obtained compared to the experimental ones. In conclusion, due to the capability to learn from the own data, ANN combined with SRM seems to be an excellent alternative to predict TG curves that do not test experimentally, opening the range of applications.

Ethanolic ionic liquid (IL) solutions, containing different 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C4MImCl) concentrations were used to modify the surface of commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The chosen ratios were: 4, 8, 16, and 32 wt.% of IL, in relation to the MCC mass. These treatments with IL did not affect the MCC morphology. FTIR analysis showed the characteristic bands of C4MImCl when the IL concentration was higher than 4 wt.%. XRD diffractograms show that the crystals may have been disrupted for IL concentrations above 4 wt.%. 1H NMR confirmed the formation of strong hydrogen bonds between C4MImCl and MCC, especially for MCC treated with 4 wt.% of IL. The functionalization using IL, regardless of the content, showed two DTG peaks, without altering the MCC Arrhenius’ parameters and degradation mechanisms. 4 wt.% of C4MImCl proved to be suitable for the MCC surface modification, improving thermal stability without detrimental effects on MCC morphology.

The objective of this study was to obtain nanowhiskers from bleached and milled curaua fibers. Nanowhiskers were obtained via a TEMPO system. TEM micrographies proved the fibers were obtained. FTIR analysis showed characteristic peaks of the oxidation products for the samples submitted to the treatment, suggesting that the it was effective for cellulose. The results show that the TEMPO method increased crystallinity and decreased the degree of polymerization. As for thermal stability, the nanowhiskers were more thermally stable than the other samples. Based on our findings, the use of nanowhiskers may be suitable for a variety of applications, such as the production of nanocomposites.

Unbleached cellulose from Pinus elliotti and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used for the manufacturing of bio-based cellulose-biochar-PEG cryogels. The cryogels were prepared by the sol-gel method, where biochar was added to a cellulose/PEG suspension, and subsequently freeze-dried. Also, biochar from poultry little waste was employed as reinforcement, aiming to increase mechanical and thermal properties. The main resuls showed that, for cryogels with biochar (5.0 wt% in relation to cellulose) and PEG (5.0 wt% in relation to the cryogels mass), an increase of the compressive strength by about 30% was achieved. The thermal conductivity of the same samples with biochar reached similar results (0.041 W m

This study aims to evaluate the influence of using a bleached Curauá fiber (CF) as filler in a novel rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composite. The influence of 0.1, 0.5 and 1 wt.% of the reinforcements on the processing characteristics, cellular structure, mechanical, dynamic-mechanical, thermal, and flame behaviors were assessed and discussed for RPUF freely expanded. The results showed that the use of 0.5 wt.% of CF resulted in RPUF with smoother cell structure with low differences on the processing times and viscosity for the filled pre-polyol. These morphological features were responsible for the gains in mechanical properties, in both parallel and perpendicular rise directions, and better viscoelastic characteristics. Despite the gains, higher thermal conductivity and lower flammability were reported for the developed RPUF composites, related to the high content of cellulose and hemicellulose on the bleached CF chemical composition. This work shows the possibility of using a Brazilian vegetable fiber, with low exploration for the manufacturing of composite materials with improved properties. The developed RPUF presents high applicability as enhanced cores for the manufacturing of structural sandwich panels, mainly used in civil, aircraft, and marine industries.

Toughening epoxy resins by adding different agents has been employed as a way to reduce brittleness in composites. Some hybridization strategies combining liquid rubbers and rigid fillers can be found in the literature, but the pair cellulose-based reinforcement, such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and liquid acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is hardly studied. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of hybridizing MCC and amino-functionalized MCC (MCCSi) with NBR on the thermal, mechanical, and dynamic-mechanical behavior of epoxy. X-ray microtomography showed a good dispersion of MCCSi fillers in epoxy/NBR compared to the non-treated MCC filler. NBR with MCCSi was found to slightly increase the thermal stability of epoxy. The addition of MCC, regardless of the functionalization, decreased tensile strength and elastic modulus, but improved impact strength and toughness properties (KIC). Also, MCCSi composites displayed better dynamic-mechanical behavior, attributed to the enhanced chemical interaction, with a small effect on glass transition temperature.

Background and purpose Some studies have shown that air pollution, often assessed by thin particulate matter with diameter below 2.5 µg/m3 (PM2.5), may contribute to severe COVID‐19 courses, as well as play a role in the onset and evolution of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the impact of air pollution on COVID‐19 has never been explored specifically amongst patients with MS (PwMS). This retrospective observational study aims to explore associations between PM2.5 and COVID‐19 severity amongst PwMS. Methods Data were retrieved from an Italian web‐based platform (MuSC‐19) which includes PwMS with COVID‐19. PM2.5 2016–2018 average concentrations were provided by the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service. Italian patients inserted in the platform from 15 January 2020 to 9 April 2021 with a COVID‐19 positive test were included. Ordered logistic regression models were used to study associations between PM2.5 and COVID‐19 severity. Results In all, 1087 patients, of whom 13% required hospitalization and 2% were admitted to an intensive care unit or died, were included. Based on the multivariate analysis, higher concentrations of PM2.5 increased the risk of worse COVID‐19 course (odds ratio 1.90; p = 0.009). Conclusions Even if several other factors explain the unfavourable course of COVID‐19 in PwMS, the role of air pollutants must be considered and further investigated., Air pollution, often assessed by particulate matter with diameter below 2.5 µg/m3, may contribute to severe COVID‐19 courses. 1087 patients were included, of whom 13% required hospitalization and 2% were admitted to an intensive care unit or died. This work presents the short-term creep behavior of novel epoxy composites reinforced by post-consumed yerba-mate (YM). Particulate composites were manufactured using 5, 10, and 20 wt.% of YM. The composite morphologies were related to the dynamic mechanical and creep behavior at the glassy state (∼30°C). Creep tests were performed using three different stress loads (1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 MPa). Weibull model, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) were used to fit the experimental curves and to predict results. A better fit was obtained using the ANN approach than the Weibull model due to the capability of ANN to learn from own data and in fitting complex nonlinear data. The RSM approach proved to be an intelligent and reliable technique to access a higher range of results, reducing experimental time and cost and keeping statistical significance. Also, the present methodology can be extended to model and predict other properties and/or optimize parameters.
