Search

With hundreds of active volcanoes varying in intensity on different timescales, Jupiter’s moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. Io has been observed from Earth using high-cadence near-infrared photometry during occultations by Jupiter and other Galilean moons since the 1980s. These observations encode a wealth of information about the volcanic features on its surface. We built a generative model for the observed occultation light curves using the code starry, which enables fast, analytic, and differentiable computation of occultation light curves in emitted and reflected light. Using this model, we are able to recover surface thermal emission maps of Io containing known volcanic hot spots without having to make assumptions about the locations, shapes, or number of hot spots. Our model is also directly applicable to the problem of mapping the surfaces of stars and exoplanets.

We present observations of five stellar occultations for (11351) Leucus and reports from two efforts on (21900) Orus. Both objects are prime mission candidate targets for the Lucy Discovery mission. Combined results for Leucus indicate a very dark surface with p V = 0.037 ± 0.001, which is derived from the average of the multichord occultations. Our estimate of the triaxial ellipsoidal shape is for axial diameters of 63.8 × 36.6 × 29.6 km assuming that the spin pole is normal to the line of sight. The actual shape of the object is only roughly elliptical in profile at each epoch. Significant topography is seen with horizontal scales up to 30 km and vertical scales up to 5 km. The most significant feature is a large depression on the southern end of the object as seen from a terrestrial viewpoint. For this work we developed a method to correct for differential refraction, accounting for the difference in color between the target object and the reference stars for astrometry derived from ground-based images.

The tenuous nitrogen (N2) atmosphere on Pluto undergoes strong seasonal effects due to high obliquity and orbital eccentricity, and has recently (July 2015) been observed by the New Horizons spacecraft. Aims. The main goals of this study are (i) to construct a well calibrated record of the seasonal evolution of surface pressure on Pluto and (ii) to constrain the structure of the lower atmosphere using a central flash observed in 2015. Methods. Eleven stellar occultations by Pluto observed between 2002 and 2016 are used to retrieve atmospheric profiles (density, pressure, temperature) between altitude levels of ~5 and ~380 km (i.e. pressures from ~ 10 μbar to 10 nbar). Results. (i) Pressure has suffered a monotonic increase from 1988 to 2016, that is compared to a seasonal volatile transport model, from which tight constraints on a combination of albedo and emissivity of N2 ice are derived. (ii) A central flash observed on 2015 June 29 is consistent with New Horizons REX profiles, provided that (a) large diurnal temperature variations (not expected by current models) occur over Sputnik Planitia; and/or (b) hazes with tangential optical depth of ~0.3 are present at 4–7 km altitude levels; and/or (c) the nominal REX density values are overestimated by an implausibly large factor of ~20%; and/or (d) higher terrains block part of the flash in the Charon facing hemisphere., European Research Council under the European Community’s H2020 2014-2020 ERC Grant Agreement n° 669416 “Lucky Star”, Grants 427700/2018-3, 310683/2017-3 and 473002/2013-2) and FAPERJ (Grant E-26/111.488/2013), Grant AYA2017-89637-R. We describe how near-field audio recording using a pocket digital sound recorder can usefully document volcanic activity, demonstrating the approach at Yasur, Vanuatu in May 2014. Prominent emissions peak at 263 Hz, interpreted as an organ-pipe mode. High-pass filtering was found to usefully discriminate volcano vent noise from wind noise, and autocorrelation of the high pass acoustic power reveals a prominent peak in exhalation intervals of ~ 2.5, 4 and 8 s, with a number of larger explosive events at ~ 200 s intervals. We suggest that this compact and inexpensive audio instrumentation can usefully supplement other field monitoring such as seismic or infrasound. A simple estimate of acoustic power interpreted with a dipole jet noise model yielded vent velocities too low to be compatible with pyroclast emission, suggesting difficulties with this approach at audio frequencies (perhaps due to acoustic absorption by volcanic gases).

We documented eruption activity at three primary vents at Yasur volcano, Tanna Island, Vanuatu using portable instrumentation in the field over a period of 5 h on 21 May 2014, and acquired aerial images of the craters and vents on 22 May 2014. Although limited in duration, our observations of eruption intervals, durations, temperatures, and speeds of ejected material illustrate the characteristics of the activity at the time at each of the primary vents, providing a useful snapshot of eruption behavior and revealing continued variability at Yasur in comparison to other observation campaigns. Hand-held, high-resolution, near-infrared observations of one of the vents gave peak temperatures of 850 °C to 930 °C for ejected clasts, with a maximum temperature of 1033 °C. These temperatures are significantly higher than previous measurements because exposed lavas could be resolved at timescales less than a second. Our aerial near-infrared images allowed us to estimate the combined area of the active vents within the crater to be ~ 150 m 2 , and comparison to MODIS radiance measurements in the same time frame yields temperatures, averaged over the combined vent area, of 530–730 °C. In the context of previous observations at Yasur, the activity in May 2014 exhibited lower overall intensity, as well as differences in the nature of the eruptions at the various vents, providing insight regarding the temporal variability of Yasur's activity.

Observations from field remote sensing of the morphology, kinematics and temperature of the Marum/Mbwelesu lava lake in the Vanuatu archipelago in 2014 reveal a highly active, vigorously erupting lava lake. Active degassing and fountaining observed at the ~ 50 m lava lake led to large areas of fully exposed lavas and rapid (~ 5 m/s) movement of lava from the centers of upwelling outwards to the lake margins. These rapid lava speeds precluded the formation of thick crust; there was never more than 30% non-translucent crust. The lava lake was observed with several portable, handheld, low-cost, near-infrared imagers, all of which measured temperatures near 1000 °C and one as high as 1022 °C, consistent with basaltic temperatures. Fine-scale structure in the lava fountains and cooled crust was visible in the near infrared at ~ 5 cm/pixel from 300 m above the lake surface. The temperature distribution across the lake surface is much broader than at more quiescent lava lakes, peaking ~ 850 °C, and is attributed to the highly exposed nature of the rapidly circulating lake. This lava lake has many characteristics in common with other active lava lakes, such as Erta Ale in Ethiopia, being confined, persistent and high-temperature; however it was much more active than is typical for Erta Ale, which often has > 90% crust. Furthermore, it is a good analogue for the persistent, high-temperature lava lakes contained within volcanic depressions on Jupiter's moon Io, such as Pele, also believed from spacecraft and ground-based observations to exhibit similar behavior of gas emission, rapid overturn and fountaining.

Observations obtained with the near-infrared camera NIRC2, coupled to the adaptive optics system on the 10-m W.M. Keck II telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, on 14 August 2007 revealed an active and highly-energetic eruption at Pillan at 245.2 ± 0.7°W and 8.5 ± 0.5°S. A one-temperature blackbody fit to the data revealed a (blackbody) temperature of 840 ± 40 K over an area of 17 km2, with a total power output of ∼500 GW. Using Davies’ (Davies, A.G. [1996]. Icarus 124(1), 45–61) Io Flow Model, we find that the oldest lava present is less than 1-2 h old, having cooled down from the eruption temperature of >1400 K to ∼710 K; this young hot lava suggests that an episode of lava fountaining was underway. In addition to an examination of this eruption, we present data of the Pele and Pillan volcanoes obtained with the same instrument and telescope from 2002 through 2015. These data reveal another eruption at Pillan on UT 28 June 2010. Model fits to this eruption yield a blackbody temperature of 600–700 K over an area of ∼60 km2, radiating over 600 GW. On UT 18 February 2015 an energetic eruption was captured by the InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF) via mutual event occultations. The eruption took place at 242.7 ± 1°W and 12.4 ± 1°S, i.e., in the eastern part of Pillan Patera. Subsequent observations showed a gradual decrease in the intensity of the eruption. Images obtained with the Keck telescope on 31 March and 5 May 2015 revealed that the locations of the eruption had shifted by 120–160 km to the NW. In contrast to the episodicity of Pillan, Pele has been persistent, observed in every appropriate 4.7 μm observation. Pele was remarkably consistent in its thermal emission from the Galileo era through February 2002, when a blackbody temperature of 940 ± 40 K and an area of 6.5 km2 was measured. Since that time, however, the radiant flux from what is likely a apparently large, overturning lava lake has gradually subsided over the next decade by a factor of ∼4, while the location of the thermal source was moving back and forth between areas roughly ∼100 km to the W of the 2002 location and an area roughly ∼100 km to the SE of the 2002 location.

In July 2007, we observed a stellar occultation by Pluto from three sites in New Zealand and Australia. From these occultation observations, we find that Pluto’s atmospheric pressure is still at the increased level measured in 2002 and 2006 with a pressure at a radius of 1275 km of 2.09 ± 0.09 μbar. One of the sites, Mt. John Observatory, was ∼70 km from the shadow center and we recorded the first central-flash occultation by Pluto. We carried out a dual-wavelength observation from this site with two different cameras using filtered high-time resolution observations in the visible from the one-meter telescope at Mt. John Observatory. From our central-flash observations, we find the elliptical shape that best matches the data corresponds to a nearly prolate atmosphere with an ellipticity of 0.09. The flux observed in the central-flash data can be fit equally well with either a haze layer or a thermal gradient in the altitudes probed by the occultation. However, the star light contributing to the central-flash occultation for the haze layer model would pass through a radius of 1130 km from Pluto’s center. Given our current best estimate of Pluto’s surface radius is greater than 1151 km (Tholen, D.J., Buie, M.W. [1997]. Bulk properties of Pluto and Charon. In: Stern, S.A., Tholen, D.J. (Eds.), Pluto and Charon. The University of Arizona Press), we prefer the thermal gradient solution or a combination of haze and thermal gradient to explain the occultation light curves.

In February 2007, the New Horizons spacecraft flew by the Jupiter system, obtaining images of Io, the most volcanically active body in the Solar System. The Multicolor Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC), a four-color (visible to near infrared) camera, obtained 17 sets of images. The Long-Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), a high-resolution panchromatic camera, obtained 190 images, including many of Io eclipsed by Jupiter. We present a complete view of the discrete point-like emission sources in all images obtained by these two instruments. We located 54 emission sources and determined their brightnesses. These observations, the first that observed individual Ionian volcanoes on short timescales of seconds to minutes, demonstrate that the volcanoes have stable brightnesses on these timescales. The active volcanoes Tvashtar (63N, 124W) and E. Girru (22N, 245W) were observed by both LORRI and MVIC, both in the near-infrared (NIR) and methane (CH4) filters. Tvashtar was additionally observed in the red filter, which allowed us to calculate a color temperature of approximately 1200 K. We found that, with some exceptions, most of the volcanoes frequently active during the Galileo era continued to be active during the New Horizons flyby. We found that none of the seven volcanoes observed by New Horizons multiple times over short timescales showed substantial changes on the order of seconds and only one, E. Girru exhibited substantial variation over minutes to days, increasing by 25% in just over an hour and decreasing by a factor of 4 over 6 days. Observations of Tvashtar are consistent with a current eruption similar to previously observed eruptions and are more consistent with the thermal emission of a lava flow than the fire fountains inferred from the November 1999 observations. These data also present new puzzles regarding Ionian volcanism. Since there is no associated surface change or low albedo feature that could be identified nearby, the source of the emission from E. Girru is a mystery. Furthermore, the in-eclipse glows we observe over many paterae are likely to be gas emission from interaction with the magnetosphere, but the details of that process are not clear.

Volatiles play a critical role in determining the nature of volcanic activity on Earth, but their role in the volcanism on Io is less clear. To help determine that role we analyze Voyager and Galileo images of Loki Patera. Loki is the largest caldera in the Solar System and Io’s most powerful volcano, however its eruptive behavior is still not understood. It appears to be relatively volatile poor, in comparison to other sites like Pele where volatiles drive a 350 km high plume. A resurfacing wave, either from spreading flows or from foundering of a lava lake crust, periodically sweeps around Loki Patera. Photometry from Voyager I and II violet and blue images shows that most of the features in and around Loki have colors well matched by macroscopic mixing of sulfur and basalt. The dark western portion of the patera has the color of bare basalt. Assuming such a macroscopic sulfur–basalt mix, in the Voyager I images most of the rest of the patera appears to be covered with a background of 13–38% sulfur. We infer this background sulfur was deposited from the nearby plume observed by Voyager I and II. The surface of the patera is also dotted by numerous small bright areas which have colloquially been called “bergs”. We find that they are also composed of sulfur, with coverage ranging up to 100%. Darker regions adjacent to the patera, such as the “southwest overflow”, are a mixture of intermediate amounts of sulfur and basalt. The “bathtub ring” at the edge of the overflow is again roughly 100% sulfur, perhaps with significant amounts of SO 2 included. Colors seen during the Voyager II flyby are also consistent with this general pattern, but most of the patera has a sulfur abundance higher than that seen in Voyager I, while the then-dark southern portion is again close to the reflectance of bare basalt. We have also analyzed the spatial distribution of the bergs. They clearly avoid the inner and outer margins of the patera, and they also avoid each other. While a simple explanation of the above patterns could be that the bergs are fumarolic sulfur deposited on a periodically resurfaced lava lake crust, other observations seem inconsistent with that simple model. Careful comparison of Voyager I and Galileo data shows that the largest bergs in the southern patera have survived the intervening 22 years. This requires that at least those larger bergs represent some more permanent feature, perhaps higher standing kipuka, which avoid inundation by the lava resurfacing wave.

The width and temperature of the active fissures on Saturn’s satellite Enceladus provide key observable constraints on physical models of these geyser-like eruptions. We analyze a sequence of high spatial resolution near-infrared spectra acquired with VIMS at 0.025 s intervals during a 74 km altitude flyover of the South Pole of Enceladus by the Cassini spacecraft on 14 April 2012 UTC. A thermal-emission spectrum covering 3- to 5-μm wavelengths was detected as the field of view crossed one of the four major fissures, Baghdad Sulcus, within 1 km of 82.36S latitude and 28.24W longitude. We interpret this spectrum as thermal emission from a linear fissure with temperature 197 ± 20 K and width 9 m. At the above wavelengths, the spectrum is dominated by the warmest temperature component. Looking downward into the fissure at only 13° from the vertical, we conclude that our results measure the temperature of the interior fissure walls (and the H 2 O vapor) at depths within 40 m of the surface.

The Pele region of Io has been the site of vigorous volcanic activity from the time of the first Voyager I observations in 1979 up through the final Galileo ones in 2001. There is high-temperature thermal emission from a visibly dark area that is thought to be a rapidly overturning lava lake, and is also the source of a large sulfur-rich plume. We present a new analysis of Voyager I visible wavelength images, and Galileo Solid State Imager (SSI) and Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) thermal emission observations which better define the morphology of the region and the intensity of the emission. The observations show remarkable correlations between the locations of the emission and the features seen in the Voyager images, which provide insight into eruption mechanisms and constrain the longevity of the activity. We also analyze an additional wavelength channel of NIMS data (1.87 μm) which paradoxically, because of reduced sensitivity, allows us to estimate temperatures at the peak locations of emission. Measurements of eruption temperatures on Io are crucial because they provide our best clues to the composition of the magma. High color temperatures indicative of ultramafic composition have been reported for the Pillan hot spot and possibly for Pele, although recent work has called into question the requirement for magma temperatures above those expected for ordinary basalts. Our new analysis of the Pele emission near the peak of the hot spot shows color temperatures near the upper end of the basalt range during the I27 and I32 encounters. In order to analyze the observed color temperatures we also present an analytical model for the thermal emission from fire-fountains, which should prove generally useful for analyzing similar data. This is a modification of the lava flow emission model presented in Howell (Howell, R.R. [1997]. Icarus 127, 394–407), adapted to the fire-fountain cooling curves first discussed in Keszthelyi et al. (Keszthelyi, L., Jaeger, W., Milazzo, M., Radebaugh, J., Davies, A.G., Mitchell, K.L. [2007]. Icarus 192, 491–502). When applied to the I32 observations we obtain a fire-fountain mass eruption rate of 5.1 × 10 5 kg s −1 for the main vent area and 1.4 × 10 4 kg s −1 for each of two smaller vent regions to the west. These fire-fountain rates suggest a solution to the puzzling lack of extensive lava flows in the Pele region. Much of the erupted lava may be ejected at high speed into the fire-fountains and plumes, creating dispersed pyroclastic deposits rather than flows. We compare gas and silicate mass eruption rates and discuss briefly the dynamics of this ejection model and the observational evidence.

Loki is the largest patera and the most energetic hotspot on Jupiter's moon Io, in turn the most volcanically active body in the Solar System, but the nature of the activity remains enigmatic. We present detailed analysis of Galileo Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) and PhotoPolarimeter/Radiometer (PPR) observations covering the 1.5–100 μm wavelength range during the I24, I27, and I32 flybys. The general pattern of activity during these flybys is consistent with previously proposed models of a resurfacing wave periodically crossing a silicate lava lake. In particular our analysis of the I32 NIMS observations shows, over much of the observed patera, surface temperatures and implied ages closely matching those expected for a wave advancing counterclockwise at 0.94–1.38 km/day. The age pattern is different than other published analyses which do not show as clearly this azimuthal pattern. Our analysis also shows two additional distinctly different patera surfaces. The first is located along the inner and outer margins where components with a 3.00–4.70-μm color temperature of 425 K exist. The second is located at the southwestern margin where components with a 550-K color temperature exist. Although the high temperatures could be caused by disruption of a lava lake crust, some additional mechanism is required to explain why the southwest margin is different from the inner or outer ones. Finally, analysis of the temperature profiles across the patera reveal a smoothness that is difficult to explain by simple lava cooling models. Paradoxically, at a subpixel level, wide temperature distributions exist which may be difficult to explain by just the presence of hot cracks in the lava crust. The resurfacing wave and lava cooling models explain well the overall characteristics of the observations. However, additional physical processes, perhaps involving heat transport by volatiles, are needed to explain the more subtle features.

We discuss the properties of the nucleus and inner coma of Comet Hale–Bopp (C/1995 O1) as derived from observations of its occultation of Star PPM 200723 on 5 October 1996, while the comet was 2.83 AU from the Sun. Compared to previous occultations by active comets, this is possibly the closest to the nucleus one has ever observed. Three chords (lightcurves) through the comet's inner coma were measured, though only one chord has a strong indication of measuring the occultation, and that was through thin cirrus. We have constrained the radius of the nucleus and properties of the coma using a simple model; there is a large valid section of parameter space. Our data show the optical depth of the coma was ≥1 within 20 to 70 km of the center of the (assumed spherical) nucleus, depending on the coma's structure and the nucleus' size. The dependence of the dust coma's opacity on cometocentric distance, ρ, was steeper than expected for force-free, radial flow, being probably as steep as or steeper than 1/ρ1.4 within 100 km of the nucleus (though it is marginally possible to fit one coma hemisphere with a 1/ρ law). Assuming the dust coma flowed radially from a spot at the center of the nucleus and that the coma's profile was not any steeper than ρ−2, the upper limit to the radius of the nucleus is about 30 km, though relaxing these assumptions limits the radius to 48 km. The chord through the coma does not show the same coma structure within 100 km of the nucleus as that which is apparent in larger-scale (∼700 km/pixel) imaging taken just before the event, suggesting that (a) the star's path sampled the acceleration region of the dust, and/or (b) azimuthal variation in the inner coma is different than that seen in the outer coma.

Multispectral images of Mars, taken at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) near and at the 1995 opposition, are used to identify and track its atmospheric clouds and ground ices. Band depth mapping is used to help distinguish between the composition of volatiles and provide a check for the techniques of principal components analysis (PCA) and linear mixture modeling (LMM). PCA/LMM are used to create maps that track clouds and volatiles, a technique that requires no a priori spectral information in order to create these maps. Band depth maps at 3.33 μm, which have been shown to trace CO 2 frosts, show some transient features which could indicate polar CO 2 clouds at the time of these observations. We show that band depth maps at 2.25 μm are good tracers of H 2 O frosts and that band depth maps at 3.69 μm can distinguish between coarse- and fine-grained water frosts. These maps have allowed the detection of fine-grained water frosts in the north polar region and along the morning and evening limb regions. From the PCA technique we find that just two principal components can account for over 99% of the data variance. The first of these is an infrared albedo unit and the second is an ice/thermal unit. Plotting the spectral data cubes in this new vector space, we find that most of the martian disk can be modeled by spectrally mixing three endmember spectra having extreme values of these principal components. The morning and evening regions of Mars are composed of 40–60% of the north polar ice/thermal component endmember, indicating a frost component there consistent with the band depth mapping results. With a combination of these techniques it is possible to not only identify the extensive martian clouds, but to also determine composition. These new results are particularly relevant in light of recent Mars Pathfinder descent temperature profile data that indicated upper atmosphere temperatures below the CO 2 frost condensation point, implying that CO 2 ice clouds may be an important radiative component of the current martian climate.

We monitored Io's volcanic thermal emission from 1.7 to 4.8 µm in 1995/96. The data reveal a number of brightenings when Io's thermal emission increased several-fold. We use a model of emission from lava flows to understand observations of two brightenings in 1996. The brightenings were caused by eruptions ≃ 3km² in extent, with eruptive rates of 104-106 m²s−1 and with maximum lava temperatures ≥ 1400 K. These events were probably lava lakes and/or fire fountains.

This paper presents new results about Triton's atmospheric structure from the analysis of all ground-based stellar occultation data recorded to date, including one single-chord occultation recorded on 1993 July 10 and nine occultation lightcurves from the double-star event on 1995 August 14. These stellar occultation observations made both in the visible and in the infrared have good spatial coverage of Triton, including the first Triton central-flash observations, and are the first data to probe the altitude level 20–100 km on Triton. The small-planet lightcurve model of J. L. Elliot and L. A. Young (1992, Astron. J. 103, 991–1015) was generalized to include stellar flux refracted by the far limb, and then fitted to the data. Values of the pressure, derived from separate immersion and emersion chords, show no significant trends with latitude, indicating that Triton's atmosphere is spherically symmetric at ∼50-km altitude to within the error of the measurements; however, asymmetry observed in the central flash indicates the atmosphere is not homogeneous at the lowest levels probed (∼20-km altitude). From the average of the 1995 occultation data, the equivalent-isothermal temperature of the atmosphere is 47 ± 1 K and the atmospheric pressure at 1400-km radius (∼50-km altitude) is 1.4 ± 0.1 μbar. Both of these are not consistent with a model based on Voyager UVS and RSS observations in 1989 (D. F. Strobel, X. Zhu, M. E. Summers, and M. H. Stevens, 1996, Icarus 120, 266–289). The atmospheric temperature from the occultation is 5 K colder than that predicted by the model and the observed pressure is a factor of 1.8 greater than the model. In our opinion, the disagreement in temperature and pressure is probably due to modeling problems at the microbar level, since measurements at this level have not previously been made. Alternatively, the difference could be due to seasonal change in Triton's atmospheric structure.

The population of heavy ions in Io's torus is ultimately derived from Io volcanism. Ground-based infrared observations of Io between October 1991 and March 1992, contemporaneous with the 8 February 1992 Ulysses observations of the Io torus, show that volcanic thermal emission was at the low end of the normal range at all Io longitudes during this period. In particular, the dominant hot spot Loki was quiescent. Resolved images show that there were at least four hot spots on Io's Jupiter-facing hemisphere, including Loki and a long-lived spot on the leading hemisphere (Kanehekili), of comparable 3.5-micrometer brightness but higher temperature.

[1] We report the observation of two stellar occultations by Titan on 14 November 2003, using stations in the Indian Ocean, southern Africa, Spain, and northern and southern Americas. These occultations probed altitudes between ∼550 and 250 km (∼1 to 250 μbar) in Titan's upper stratosphere. The light curves reveal a sharp inversion layer near 515 ± 6 km altitude (1.5 μbar pressure level), where the temperature increases by 15 K in only 6 km. This layer is close to an inversion layer observed fourteen months later by the Huygens HASI instrument during the entry of the probe in Titan's atmosphere on 14 January 2005 [Fulchignoni et al., 2005]. Central flashes observed during the first occultation provide constraints on the zonal wind regime at 250 km, with a strong northern jet (∼200 m s -1 ) around the latitude 55°N, wind velocities of ∼150 m s -1 near the equator, and progressively weaker winds as more southern latitudes are probed. The haze distribution around Titan's limb at 250 km altitude is close to that predicted by the Global Circulation Model of Rannou et al. (2004) in the southern hemisphere, but a clearing north of 40°N is necessary to explain our data. This contrasts with Rannou et al.'s (2004) model, which predicts a very thick polar hood over Titan's northern polar regions. Simultaneous observations of the flashes at various wavelengths provide a dependence of τ ∝ λ -q , with q = 1.8 ± 0.5 between 0.51 and 2.2 μm for the tangential optical depth of the hazes at 250 km altitude.

We present the results of our monitoring study of the IR photometric and spectroscopic variability of the T Tau multiple system. We also present data on the apparent position of T Tau S with respect to T Tau N, and two new spatially resolved observations of the T Tau Sa-Sb binary. T Tau N has not varied by more than 0.2 magnitudes in K and L' flux during the 8 years of our observations, though its Br gamma and Br alpha emission line fluxes have varied by nearly a factor of four during this time. For the unresolved T Tau S system, we have derived a 20 year light curve based on our images and on measurements available in the literature. T Tau S varies by 2-3 magnitudes in K and L'-band brightness in a ``redder when faint'' manner, consistent with changes along the line of sight in the amount of material that follows an ISM extinction law. Absorption in the 3.05um water-ice feature is seen only in the spectra of T Tau S and it displays variations in depth and profile. H_2 (2.12 um) emission is also detected only at the position of T Tau S; the H_2, Br gamma and Br alpha emission line fluxes also vary. We have found that the apparent positions of T Tau S with respect to T Tau N and T Tau Sb with respect to Sa are consistent with gravitationally bound orbital motion. The possible orbits of the T Tau S binary imply that Sa is likely the most massive component in this young triple. A reanalysis of the motion of the radio source associated with T Tau S provides no evidence for an ejection event in the T Tau system., Comment: 49 pages, including 17 figures. We report the discovery of soft (0.25--2 keV) x-ray emission from the Galilean satellites Io and Europa, probably Ganymede, and from the Io Plasma Torus (IPT). Bombardment by energetic (>10 keV) H, O, and S ions from the region of the IPT seems the likely source of the x-ray emission from the Galilean satellites. According to our estimates, fluorescent x-ray emission excited by solar x-rays, even during flares from the active Sun, charge-exchange processes, previously invoked to explain Jupiter's x-ray aurora and cometary x-ray emission, and ion stripping by dust grains fail to account for the observed emission. On the other hand, bremsstrahlung emission of soft X-rays from non-thermal electrons in the few hundred to few thousand eV range may account for a substantial fraction of the observed x-ray flux from the IPT., 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Construction of a two-telescope Michelson spatial inteferometer to be operated at a nominal wavelength of 2.2 microns in the near-IR began in May 1987. Nearly all of the mechanical, electronic, and optical hardware of the Infrared Michelson Array (IRNMA) is currently in place and has been tested. Proof-of-concept has been demonstrated, and efforts are currently underway to improve the system operation to produce reliable, calibrated fringe visibilities.

In this second paper on IRMA (Infrared Michelson Array) the control and data acquisition system for the instrument are described. This paper will concentrate on a description of the computer-siderostat control system. Three personal computer based systems perform the high level control such as star catalog maintenance, current coordinate computations and siderostat/delay line position and rate computations, control of the analog to digital conversion, data storage and quick look data reduction. Low level control, such as generating the pulses that are sent to various drive micro-steppers are performed by seperate Motorola 68000 based microprocessor boards. Command words are passed between the control computers and the various microprocessor boards through a multichannel parallel-to-serial interface. Loki is the most powerful volcano in the Solar System. It has been observed to be in continuous though variable activity since 1979. Synthesis of more than a decade of groundbased data suggests that Loki eruptions are cyclic, with a 540 day period. Application of a simple lava cooling model to temperatures in Loki Patera, and eruption start and end times, implies that brightenings are due to a resurfacing wave propagating across the patera. The data are most consistent with lava lake overturn, but resurfacing by lava flows cannot be ruled out. A porosity gradient in the lake crust could cause lava lake overturn to occur periodically on the timescale observed.

We present an IR lunar occultation and direct imaging search for companions in the Ophiuchus star-forming region and update a similar search of the Taurus region. The search is sensitive to companions in the angular separation range 0.005-10 sec. In Ophiuchus, we surveyed 35 young star targets; this sample contains at least 10 binaries, two triples, and one quadruple. Ten of the companion stars are newly discovered. In Taurus, the survey now includes 47 systems among which there are at least 22 binaries and four triples. Only two companion stars are newly identified because there is strong overlap with prior work. All the triples and quadruple are hierarchical. The observed binary frequency in Ophiuchus, in the 3-1400 AU range of separations, is at least 1.1 +/- 0.3 that of the nearby solar-like stars. This value is a lower bound because we make no corrections for incompleteness. In Taurus, in the same range of separations, the observed binary frequency is at least 1.6 +/- 0.3 that of the nearby solar-like stars. This value extends Ghez et al.'s (1993) and Leinert's et al.'s (1993) determination of an excess binary frequency to 3 AU separation. We used the weak-line T Tauri star/T Tauri star (WT/TT) type and the K-L color index to distinguish between systems with and without inner disks. We find no convincing difference in the binary frequency or distribution of separations of the systems with and without inner disks. The 1.3 mm continuum emission of the single systems exceeds that of the multiples suggesting that their extensive outer disks are more massive. The specific angular momenta of the binaries overlap those of molecular cloud cores measured by Goodman et al. (1993).

We describe the general data-reduction techniques that we developed to deal with stellar interferograms. The techniques that we describe here were used to obtain the fundamental visibility data from raw Earth-scanned interferograms obtained with the infrared Michelson array stellar interferometer. The reduced visibility data have resulted in new direct angular diameter measurements and effective temperature determinations for α Her, α Ori, and Mira. These astrophysical results were previously published. We point out that the data-reduction techniques described here are completely general in the sense that they can be used to reduce the data from any stellar interferometer that records the temporal data stream as the fringe packet is swept by the detectors.

Lunar occultation observations of the active T Tauri star DG Tau show that in the infrared K band it has a core-halo structure: 20-25 percent of the flux comes from a region 10 AU in extent and the rest from an unresolved core smaller than an AU. These results are consistent with those reported by Leinert et al. from a separate observation. The results obtained here and those of Leinert et al., measuring the intensity distribution projected along directions spanning roughly 40 deg, indicate that the resolved structure is not highly elongated. The extended emission is interpreted as star light scattered by optically thin dust located in a halo surrounding the star.

Twenty-eight young stars systems in the northern Taurus star-forming region are surveyed for multiplicity. These observations, made by infrared lunar occultation and imaging techniques, can identify binaries in the angular separation range 0.005-10 arcsec. Of the 28 systems, 11 are binaries and two are triples, giving an observed multiplicity of 1.5 stars per system. The binary frequency and distribution of separations are similar to those of the main-sequence F and G spectral-type stars. Stars that have detected companions and those without are indistinguishable in H-alpha equivalent width, indicating that stars with active inner disks are represented in both groups. The multiple systems are in general weaker 1.3 mm continuum emitters than the single stars, indicating that the large-scale disks in these systems are less massive. However, there are important exceptions so the evolution of disks in multiple systems is not clear.

We present the first infrared angular diameter measurements of α Her, a bright cool supergiant. The measurements are the first astronomical scientific results from the infrared Michelson array (IRMA), a prototype near-infrared, broadband, two-telescope interferometer. Here we report on visibilities obtained with telescope separations of 4.8, 8.0, and 12.0 m. The data were fit with both uniform disk and limb darkened models.

This paper presents results of NIR photometric observations of IRC + 10216 star during the time interval 1965-1990, which were combined with measurements of the circumstellar shell surrounding IRC + 10216 by IR speckle interferometry. Using these data together with published observations, a very precise light curve was constructed, demonstrating the occurrence of long-term changes in the circumstellar shell surrounding IRC + 10216. The observations are discussed in the framework of two alternatives: (1) the occurrence of dynamical changes in the shell and (2) blocking of the direct light from the star to a portion of the shell by intervening material.

The progress of an infrared K band lunar occultation search for binaries among premain-sequence stars is reported. From the fall of 1986 to the fall of 1989, 13 objects have been observed, all in the Taurus star-forming region. Five new binaries have been discovered: DF Tau, DI Tau, FS Tau (Haro 6-5) A, FV Tau (Haro 6-8), and FW Tau, with projected separations ranging from 0.01 to 0.57 arcsec. Including results reported previously, a total of 31 objects, 21 in Taurus and 10 in Ophiuchus, have been surveyed and nine double systems have been found. The detected binary frequency (0.29) seems consistent with that of the solar-type main-sequence field stars.

Io's active hot spots, which are presently mapped on the basis of IR photometry of this moon's occultation by other Gallilean satellites, are obtained with greatest spatial resolution near the sub-earth point. A model is developed for the occultation lightcurves, and its fitting to the data defines the apparent path of the occulting satellite relative to Io; the mean error in apparent relative position of occulting satellites is of the order of 178 km. A heretofore unknown, 20-km diameter hot spot is noted on Io's leading hemisphere.

Evidence is reported for hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) on Io's surface. An infrared band at 3.915 (+/- 0.015) micrometers in several ground-based spectra of Io can be accounted for by reflectance from H(2)S frost deposited on or cocondensed with sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) frost. Temporal variation in the occurrence and intensity of the band suggests that condensed H(2)S on Io's surface is transient, implying a similar variation of H(2)S abundance in Io's atmosphere. The band was observed in full-disk measurements of Io at several orbital longitudes, including once at 24 degrees ( approximately 0.5 hour after Io's reappearance after an eclipse)-but not after another reappearance at 22 degrees -and once at 95 degrees (on Io's leading hemisphere). These results suggest that condensed H(2)S is sparse and variable but can be widespread on Io's surface. When present, it would not only produce the infrared band but would brighten Io's typical surface at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths.

We have monitored the angularly resolved near infrared and 3.1 micron ice-band flux of the components of the young binary Haro 6-10 on 23 occasions during the years 1988 to 2000. Our observations reveal that both the visible star Haro 6-10 (Haro 6-10S) and its infrared companion (Haro 6-10N) show significant variation in flux on time scales as short as a month. The substantial flux decrease of Haro 6-10S over the last four years carries the reddening signature of increased extinction. However, a comparable K-band flux increase observed in the IRC is associated with a dimming in the H-band and cannot be explained by lower extinction. Absorption in the 3.1 micron water-ice feature was always greater towards the IRC during our observations, indicating a larger amount of obscuring material along its line of sight. We detect variability in the ice-band absorption towards Haro 6-10S and Haro 6-10N, significant at the 3.5 sigma and 2.0 sigma levels, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 6 Figures, Accepted for Publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Galileo has now completed 7 years exploring Jupiter. The spacecraft obtained breathtaking views of the four major satellites, and studied Jupiter's clouds and atmospheric composition, rings, small satellites, and magnetic field. It had five successful close flybys and many distant observations of Io. Scientists already knew from Voyager and Earth-based astronomy that Io is by far the most volcanically active object in the solar system. Galileo has given us stunning color panoramas of Io's surface and unprecedented close views of erupting volcanoes (Figure 1) and the largest active flows observed anywhere. Among recent discoveries about Io, perhaps most astonishing since Voyager, is that some lavas possess emission temperatures greater than any lavas erupted on Earth today and possibly since the start of Earth's geologic history. The Io science community has identified three alternative interpretations of Io's hottest lavas: (1) ultramafic material similar to komatiite; (2) superheated lava; or (3) an ultra-refractory substance deficient in silica and rich in Ca-Al oxides.
