Noise spectroscopy elucidates the fundamental noise sources in spin systems, which is essential for developing spin qubits with long coherence times for quantum information processing, communication, and sensing. But noise spectroscopy typically relies on microwave coherent spin control to extract the noise spectrum, which becomes infeasible when there are high-frequency noise components stronger than the available microwave power. Here, we demonstrate an alternative all-optical approach to performing noise spectroscopy. Our approach utilises coherent Raman rotations of the spin state with controlled timing and phase to implement Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) pulse sequences. Analysing the spin dynamics under these sequences enables us to extract the noise spectrum of a dense ensemble of nuclear spins interacting with a single spin in a quantum dot, which has thus far only been modelled theoretically. By providing large spectral bandwidths of over 100 MHz, our Raman-based approach could serve as an important tool to study spin dynamics and decoherence mechanisms for a broad range of solid-state spin qubits.

Background: Pediatric trigger thumb is a common condition that can occur bilaterally. There have been reports of a metachronous relationship between trigger thumbs developing in both extremities. Surgeons might consider delaying operative treatment of unilateral trigger thumb due to the concern that contralateral symptoms may develop later in childhood, requiring a second procedure and anesthetic event. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with pediatric trigger thumb from 2008 to 2016 at a large pediatric hospital. Data collected included age at presentation and onset, laterality, age and timing of onset of contralateral symptoms, time of index procedure and subsequent procedure (if any), severity of symptoms, previous treatments, range of motion, and birth history. Results: There were 198 patients with pediatric trigger thumb, with 55 patients (28%) presenting with or developing bilateral involvement. Fifty patients (25%) had bilateral involvement upon initial presentation. Five patients (3%) were subsequently diagnosed with contralateral trigger thumb after initial presentation of unilateral trigger thumb. Average time to contralateral trigger thumb development was 12 months after presentation in unilateral patients. Most patients presented with locked flexion contracture with palpable Notta’s nodule. Of the 5 patients who developed contralateral trigger thumbs, three required a second surgery after the index procedure. Conclusions: The vast majority of patients with bilateral trigger thumbs had bilateral involvement upon initial presentation to the pediatric hand clinic. Given the rarity of bilateral symptoms after initial unilateral presentation, we do not recommend delayed surgical intervention for patients with unilateral disease in children over 3 years of age.

The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent reverse total shoulder arthroplasty performed for primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) with an intact rotator cuff compared with rotator cuff tear arthropathy (CTA).This was a retrospective review of prospectively collected data including consecutive patients who underwent primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for GHOA or CTA with a minimum of 2-year follow-up. Baseline patient demographics and clinical outcomes including active range of motion, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, Single Assessment Numerical Evaluation, and visual analog scale for pain were collected. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of preoperative diagnosis on clinical outcomes.Patients with a preoperative diagnosis of GHOA demonstrated significantly better postoperative active forward elevation (138.6° versus 127.3°; P0.01), external rotation (54.2° versus 43.8°; P0.01), and change in internal rotation (Δ 2.1 points versus Δ 1.2 points; P0.01). Patients with GHOA demonstrated significantly better postoperative ASES (86.8 versus 76.6; P0.01), Single Assessment Numerical Evaluation (89.7 versus 78.5; P0.01), and visual analog scale scores (0.63 versus 1.2; P0.01). Minimal clinically important difference for ASES score was achieved by 97.5% of patients with GHOA compared with 86.7% of patients with CTA (P0.01), whereas substantial clinical benefit was achieved by 90.4% of patients with GHOA and 71.7% of patients with CTA (P0.01). After a multivariate linear regression analysis, postoperative ASES scores were independently associated with previous ipsilateral shoulder surgery (P = 0.042), preoperative ASES score (P = 0.01), and primary diagnosis of GHOA (P0.01).RTSA performed in patients with GHOA and an intact rotator cuff is associated with improved functional and clinical outcomes compared with those patients treated for CTA.Level III Therapeutic Study.

Background Mid-flexion instability after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a clinical entity that is not well studied and one that has been associated with patient dissatisfaction and inferior outcomes. We sought to provide a comprehensive review of risk factors associated with mid-flexion instability. Methods A comprehensive literature search of PUBMED, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library was performed using keywords “mid flexion,” “instability,” and “knee arthroplasty” in all possible combinations. All studies published from 2010 to 2020 in English were considered for inclusion. Research design, question studied, and outcomes were recorded for each study. Quantitative and qualitative analysis was performed. Results Eighteen articles meeting inclusion criteria were identified and reviewed. There were 5 computational studies, 5 cadaveric studies, and 8 clinical studies. There were 14 different risk factors investigated in relation to mid-flexion instability after TKA: 6 implant-related, 6 technique-related, and 2 patient-related factors. Of these risk factors, 5 had contradictory results published to date, resulting in an inconclusive association with mid-flexion instability. The results of this review suggest that the effects of joint line elevation and radius-of-curvature of the femoral component on mid-flexion instability are inconclusive while articular surface conformity and preoperative joint laxity may play a bigger role than previously thought. Conclusion Mid-flexion instability after TKA is a clinical entity distinct from other established forms of instability. There are patient-related, implant-related, and technique-related factors associated with mid-flexion instability. The majority of the evidence on this topic is derived from computational and cadaveric studies, underscoring the need for further clinical studies.

To determine whether articular cartilage damage noted at the time of primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) affects the likelihood of achieving ≥ 90% symmetry for isokinetic extension strength at 6 months after surgery or risk of recurrent ACL injury. Five hundred and eight patients underwent primary ACLR and diagnostic arthroscopy. All identified cartilage lesions were graded using the Outerbridge system. All patients underwent isokinetic strength testing. The association between cartilage Outerbridge grade and a ≥ 90% Limb Symmetry Index (LSI) and recurrent ACL injury risk at mean 38.7 month follow-up (SD 31.8) was evaluated via multivariate regression analysis. Grade 2 or higher damage was present in 394 (77.5%) of patients, grade 3 or higher in 143 (28.1%) and grade 4 in 83 (16.4%) at time of ACLR. Ipsilateral ACLR graft rupture occurred in 31 (6.1%) of patients. Contralateral ACL injury occurred in 19 (3.7%). Patients with grade 2 or higher damage were significantly less likely to meet an LSI goal of ≥ 90% for fast (300°/s) isokinetic extension. There was no association with slow isokinetic extension. Cartilage lesion severity at or beyond grade 2 had a similar effect on isokinetic testing results regardless of compartment involvement or performance of microfracture. Patients with grade 2–4 cartilage damage were less likely to sustain a second ipsilateral ACL injury or a contralateral native ACL injury. Cartilage damage seen at time of ACL reconstruction is common and associated with lower likelihood of achieving ≥ 90% symmetry for isokinetic extension strength at 6 months after surgery. However, lower recurrent ACL injury rates are seen in patients with concurrent cartilage damage. These data may inform future clinical decisions regarding operative managment of recurrent ACL injuries. III.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compressive neuropathy of the upper extremity. We sought to assess the subjective improvement in preoperative symptoms related to CTS, particularly those affecting sleep, and describe opioid consumption postoperatively. Methods: All patients undergoing primary carpal tunnel release (CTR) for electromyographically proven CTS were studied prospectively. All procedures were performed by hand surgery fellowship–trained adult orthopedic and plastic surgeons in the outpatient setting. Patients underwent either endoscopic or open CTR from June 2017 to December 2017. Outcomes assessed were pre- and postoperative Quick Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH), visual analog scale (VAS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores as well as postoperative pain control. Results: Sixty-one patients were enrolled. At 2 weeks, all showed significant ( P < .05) improvement in QuickDASH scores. At 6 weeks, 40 patients were available for follow-up. When compared with preoperative scores, QuickDASH (51 vs 24.5; P < .05), VAS (6.7 vs 2.9; P < .05), and PSQI (10.4 vs 6.4; P < .05) scores continued to improve when compared with preoperative scores. At 2-week follow-up, 39 patients responded to the question, “How soon after your carpal tunnel surgery did you notice an improvement in your sleep?” Seventeen patients (43.6%) reported they had improvement in sleep within 24 hours, 12 patients (30.8%) reported improvement between 2 and 3 days postoperatively, 8 patients (20.5%) reported improvement between 4 and 5 days postoperatively, and 2 patients (5.1%) reported improvement between 6 and 7 days postoperatively. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates rapid and sustained improvement in sleep quality and function following CTR.

The study of the pathogenesis of preeclampsia has been hampered by a relative dearth of animal models. We developed a rat model of preeclampsia in which the excretion of a circulating inhibitor of Na/K ATPase, marinobufagenin (MBG), is elevated. These animals develop hypertension, proteinuria, and intrauterine growth restriction. The administration of a congener of MBG, resibufogenin (RBG), reduces blood pressure to normal in these animals, as is the case when given to pregnant animals rendered hypertensive by the administration of MBG. Studies of Na/K ATPase inhibition by MBG and RBG reveal that these agents are equally effective as inhibitors of the enzyme.

Cryptophycins, depsipeptides isolated from terrestrial blue–green algae, show potent activity against a variety of tumor cell lines. Given the potential of the cryptophycins for cancer therapy, we developed a new class of non-peptide peptidomimetic, designed to replace the 16-membered macrolide ring with a 7-membered azepine ring for attachment of the cryptophycin side chains with the required spatial orientation to mimic the conformation of the relevant region of the natural product. Monte Carlo conformational analysis revealed excellent overlay of the local minimum structural model 6 and X-ray structure of (+)-cryptophycin-3 ( 5 ). Starting from this structural model, we designed and synthesized compounds (+)-25 , (+)-30 , and (+)-34 as potential mimics of cryptophycins. Compounds (+)-25 , (+)-30 , and (+)-34 were tested for in vitro cytotoxicity against six human cancer cell lines. Although only modest activities were observed, these results suggested that a new series of bioactive cryptophycin analogues might be available by structural modification of the central ring system of the cryptophycins.

Despite promising early data, the natural product dolastatin 10 has not been successful as a single agent in phase II clinical trials. Herein the mechanism of action and efficacy of a synthetic analogue, auristatin PYE, was investigated in 2 human colon adenocarcinoma models, DLD-1 and COLO 205. In vivo efficacy was assessed in subcutaneous xenografts following intravenous administration. Mechanistic studies investigated effects of auristatin PYE on microtubule disruption using immunocytochemistry, whilst cell cycle effects were studied using flow cytometry. The tubulin-binding natural product combretastatin A-4 (CA-4) was tested for antitumor activity against fresh human tumors in vitro and 2 mouse tumors, both in vitro and in vivo. In colony forming assays using 10% fetal bovine serum, CA-4 was inhibitory in 27/40 human ovary cancers with a mean IC50 of 3.18 micrograms/mL for a 1-hour exposure (n = 35 specimens) and 0.27 microgramf1p4for a continuous exposure to CA-4 for 11-14 days (n = 5 specimens). Murine B-16 melanoma and P-388 leukemia were also highly sensitive to CA-4 in vitro with an identical IC50 value of 0.0007 micrograms/mL for continuous drug exposure for 8 days. Comparable in vitro cell culture studies performed in serum concentrations higher than 10%, revealed a significant loss of cytotoxic potency. Using the same reversed-phase HPLC technique as developed for paclitaxel, CA-4 was shown to bind to serum proteins (or = 30,000 mw)99% and to albumin approximately 70%. CA-4 was only marginally active (25% increased lifespan) in DBA/2 mice bearing P-388 leukemia who were given doses of 100 mg/kg IP on either days, 1, 5 and 9 (p = 0.075 by Wilcoxon analysis) or on consecutive days 1-9 (p = 0.19 compared to control). A higher IP dose of 150 mg/kg on days 1, 5 and 9 did not delay subcutaneous B-16 melanoma tumor growth in C57/B1 mice. These findings demonstrate a substantial loss of antitumor efficacy for CA-4 in physiologic serum concentrations in vitro. No consistent antitumor activity was observed in two murine tumor models in vivo.

The macrocyclic lactone bryostatin-1 was found to exert in vitro antineoplastic activity against several leukemic cell lines, including human K562 erythroleukemia, HL60 promyelocytic leukemia, REH and MOLT-4 lymphoblastic leukemias, CCRFCEM lymphoma, KG-1 myeloid leukemia, and murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia. No statistically significant difference in sensitivity to bryostatin-1 was found between adriamycin-resistant P388 and K526 subclones and their sensitive counterparts. Freshly explanted clonogenic leukemic cells showed a variable sensitivity to bryostatin-1 in 10/12 tested samples. The IC50 of clonogenic leukemic cells was 4 × 10–3 M bryostatin-1, and that of normal marrow CFU-GM was 10–5 M. Leukemic cells exposed to bryostatin-1 showed a variable degree of monocytic differentiation as evaluated by ANAE staining and morphology. Bryostatin-1 is also able to inhibit the growth of CFU-GM from myelodysplastic marrow and to shorten the duration of dysplastic hematopoiesis in liquid culture. In conclusion, these data suggest that bryostatin-1 is a potent antileukemic agent in vitro that may be potentially useful for clinical studies.

International audience; EMWF (Embedded Workflow Framework) is an open source middleware for flexible (i.e., configurable, customizable and adaptable), user-centric automation and assistive devices and systems. EMWF 1.0 provides a light-weight workflow manager and engines on Windows CE, Windows XP Embedded, and Linux. It is for small embedded automation devices. EMWF 2.0 also provides basic message passing and real-time scheduling mechanisms and workflow communication facility. This paper describes EMWF 1.0 and extensions in EMWF 2.0, as well as case studies on workflow-based design and implementation as motivations for EMWF and the extensions.

International audience; Most of the existing clock synchronization algorithms for wireless sensor networks can be viewed as proactive clock synchronization since they require nodes to periodically synchronize their clock to a reference node regardless of whether they use time information or not. However, the proactive approach wastes unnecessary energy and bandwidth when nodes don't use time information for their operations. In this paper, we propose a new clock synchronization scheme called Reactive Clock Synchronization (RCS) that can be carried out on demand. The main idea is that a source node initiates a synchronization process in parallel with a data communication. To propagate clock information only when there is traffic, we embed the synchronization process in a data communication process. The results from detailed simulations confirm that RCS consumes only less than 1 percent of the energy consumption compared to two representative existing algorithms while it improves the clock accuracy by up to 75.8%.

International audience; The development of embedded systems challenges software engineers with timely delivery of optimised code that is both safe and resource-aware. Within this context, we focus on distributed systems with small, specialised node hardware, specifically, wireless sensor network (WSN) systems. Model-driven software development (MDSD) promises to reduce errors and efforts needed for complex software projects by automated code generation from abstract software models. We present an approach for MDSD based on the data-centric OMG middleware standard DDS. In this paper, we argue that the combination of DDS features and MDSD can successfully be applied to WSN systems, and we present the design of an appropriate approach, describing an architecture, metamodels and the design workflow. Finally, we present a prototypical implementation of our approach using a WSN-enabled DDS implementation and a set of modelling and transformation tools from the Eclipse Modeling Framework.

International audience; The analysis of worst-case execution times has become mandatory in the design of hard real-time systems: it is absolutely necessary to know an upper bound of the execution time of each task to determine a task schedule that insures that deadlines will all be met. The OTAWA toolbox presented in this paper has been designed to host algorithms resulting from research in the domain of WCET analysis so that they can be combined to compute tight WCET estimates. It features an abstraction layer that decouples the analyses from the target hardware and from the instruction set architecture, as well as a set of functionalities that facilitate the implementation of new approaches.

In many engineering disciplines, large systems are built from prefabricated components with known and validated properties. Components are connected via stable, understandable, and standardized interfaces. The system engineer has knowledge about the global properties of the components-as they relate to the system functions-and of the detailed specification of the component interfaces. Knowledge about the internal design and implementation of the components is neither needed, nor available in many cases. A prerequisite for such a constructive approach to system building is that the validated properties of the components are not affected by the system integration. This composability requirement is an important constraint for the selection of a platform for the component-based design of large distributed embedded systems. Component-based design is a meet-in-the middle design method. On one side the functional and temporal requirements on the components are derived top-down from the desired application functions. On the other side, the functional and temporal capabilities of the components are contained in the specifications of the available components (bottom up). During the design process a proper match between component requirements and component capabilities must be established. If there is no component available that meets the requirements, a new component must be developed. A prerequisite of any component-based design is a crystal clear component concept that supports the precise specification of the services that are delivered and acquired across the component interfaces. In real-time systems, where the temporal properties of component services are as important as the value properties, the proper notion of a component is a hardware software unit. In the first part of this presentation the different interfaces of an embedded system component will be introduced. The services of the component are provided by the linking interface (LIF) that must be precisely specified in the domains of value and time. The technology independent interface TII is used to parameterize a component to the given application environment. While a component provider must assure that the component works properly in all configurations that are covered by the parameter space, the component user is primarily interested in the correct operation of the concrete component configuration. The following parts will be concerned with the composition of components and the notion of emerging properties in systems of components.

International audience; Chilenski and Miller [1] claim that the error detection probability of a test set with full modified condition/decision coverage (MC/DC) on the system under test converges to 100% for an increasing number of test cases, but there are also examples where the error detection probability of an MC/DC adequate test set is indeed zero. In this work we analyze the effective error detection rate of a test set that achieves maximum possible MC/DC on the code for a case study from the automotive domain. First we generate the test cases automatically with a model checker. Then we mutate the original program to generate three different error scenarios: the first error scenario focuses on errors in the value domain, the second error scenario focuses on errors in the domain of the variable names and the third error scenario focuses on errors within the operators of the boolean expressions in the decisions of the case study. Applying the test set to these mutated program versions shows that all errors of the values are detected, but the error detection rate for mutated variable names or mutated operators is quite disappointing (for our case study 22% of the mutated variable names, resp. 8% of the mutated operators are not detected by the original MC/DC test set). With this work we show that testing a system with a test set that achieves maximum possible MC/DC on the code detects less errors than expected.

International audience; As embedded systems take more important roles at many places, it is more important for them to be able to show the evidences of system failures. Providing such evidences makes it easier to investigate the root causes of the failures and to prove the responsible parties. This paper proposes simultaneous logging and replaying of a system that enables recording evidences of system failures. The proposed system employs two virtual machines, one for the primary execution and the other for the backup execution. The backup virtual machine maintains the past state of the primary virtual machine along with the log to make the backup the same state as the primary. When a system failure occurs on the primary virtual machine, the VMM saves the backup state and the log. The saved backup state and the log can be used as an evidence. By replaying the backup virtual machine from the saved state following the saved log, the execution path to the failure can be completely analyzed. We developed such a logging and replaying feature in a VMM. It can log and replay the execution of the Linux operating system. The experiment results show the overhead of the primary execution is only fractional.

International audience; Real-time systems need to be time-predictable in order to prove the timeliness of all their time-critical responses. While this is a well-known fact, recent efforts of the community on concretizing the predictability of task timing have shown that there is no common agreement about what the term time-predictability exactly means. In this paper we propose a universal definition of time-predictability that combines the essence of different discussions about this term. This definition is then instantiated to concrete types of time-predictability, like worst-case execution time (WCET) predictability. Finally, we introduce the concept of a timing barrier as a mechanism for constructing time-predictable systems.

International audience; Ubiquitous Systems are expected in the near future to have much more impact on our daily tasks thanks to advances in embedded systems, "Plug-n-Play" protocols and software architectures. Such protocols target home devices and enables automatic discovery and interaction among them. Consequently, smart applications are shaping the home into a smart one by orchestrating devices in an elegant manner. Currently, several protocols coexist in smart homes but interactions between devices cannot be put into action unless devices are supporting the same protocol. Furthermore, smart applications must know in advance names of services and devices to interact with them. However, such names are semantically equivalent but syntactically different needing translation mechanisms. In order to reduce human efforts for achieving interoperability, we introduce an approach combining ontology alignment techniques with those of Model Driven Engineering domain to reach a dynamic service adaptation.

International audience; Dynamic Quality-of-Service (QoS) management has been shown to be an effective way to make an efficient use of systems resources, such as computing, communication or energy. This is particularly important in resource-contrained embedded systems, such as vehicles, multimedia devices, etc.. Deploying dynamic QoS management requires using an appropriate schedulability test that is fast enough and ensures continued schedulability while the system adapts its configuration. In this paper we consider four utilization-based tests with release jitter, a particularly relevant feature in distributed systems, three of which were recently proposed and one is added in this work. We carry out an extensive comparison using random task sets to characterize their relative merits and we show a case study where multiple video streams are dynamically managed in a fictitious automotive application using such schedulability bounds.

International audience; Future space systems require innovative computing system architectures, on account of their size, weight, power consumption, cost, safety and maintainability requisites. The AIR (ARINC 653 in Space Real-Time Operating System) architecture answers the interest of the space industry, especially the European Space Agency, in transitioning to the flexible and safe approach of having onboard functions of different criticalities share hardware resources, while being functionally separated in logical containers (partitions). Partitions are separated in the time and space domains. In this paper we present the evolution of the AIR architecture, from its initial ideas to the current state of the art. We describe the research we are currently performing on AIR, which aims to obtain an industrial-grade product for future space systems, and lay the foundations for further work.
