Hadal trenches are perceived as a unique deep-sea ecosystem with fundamentally different communities compared to the nearby abyss. So far, however, scarce information exists about how populations are genetically linked within a trench and about mechanisms for species divergence. The present study presents the morphological and molecular-genetic characterization and description of a new nannoniscid species within the genus Austroniscus Vanhöffen, 1914 obtained from abyssal and hadal depths of the Puerto Rico Trench, NW Atlantic. Samples were collected as part of the Vema-TRANSIT expedition onboard RV Sonne in January 2015. Because of the large depth differences between sampling locations (4,552–8,338 m), we expected to find different species within the genus inhabiting abyssal and hadal sites. Initial morphological examination using traditional light microscopy and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy was paired with subsequent molecular analysis based on mtDNA (COI and 16S). Contrary to our assumptions, combined morphological and molecular species delimitation analyses (sGMYC, mPTP, ABGD) revealed the presence of only one species spanning the abyssal and hadal seafloor of the Puerto Rico Trench. In addition, comparison with type material could show that this species belongs to a new species, Austroniscus brandtae n. sp., which is described herein. Incongruence between some species delimitation methods suggesting the presence of multiple species is interpreted as strong genetic population structuring within the trench, which is also supported by the analysis of the haplotype networks. The geographic and bathymetric distribution of Austroniscus species is discussed. The species described herein represents the first in the genus Austroniscus from the Atlantic Ocean and the deepest record of the genus to date, and hence significantly expanding previously known limits of its geographic and bathymetric range.

In the deep sea, the phylogeny and biogeography of only a few taxa have been well studied. Although more than 200 species in 32 genera have been described for the asellote isopod families Desmosomatidae Sars, 1897 and Nannoniscidae Hansen, 1916 from all ocean basins, their phylogenetic relationships are not completely understood. There is little doubt about the close relationship of these families, but the taxonomic position of a number of genera is so far unknown. Based on a combined morphological phylogeny using the Hennigian method with a dataset of 107 described species and a molecular phylogeny based on three markers (COI, 16S, and 18S) with 75 species (most new to science), we could separate Desmosomatidae and Nannoniscidae as separate families. However, we could not support the concept of the subfamilies Eugerdellatinae Hessler, 1970 and Desmosomatinae Hessler, 1970. Most genera of both families were well supported, but several genera appear as para- or even polyphyletic. Within both families, convergent evolution and analogies caused difficulty in defining apomorphies for phylogenetic reconstructions and this is reflected in the results of the concatenated molecular tree. There is no biogeographic pattern in the distribution as the genera occur over the entire Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, showing no specific phylogeographical pattern. Poor resolution at deep desmosomatid nodes may reflect the long evolutionary history of the family and rapid evolutionary radiations. Spatial patterns of genetic variation (based on COI and 16S mtDNA) for morphologically similar species in the isopod genus Nannoniscus G.O. Sars. 1870 were examined that occur broadly across the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ). Samples were obtained from five different licence areas as well as an Area of Particular Environmental Interest (APEI-6) with sites located at various distances (a few to several hundred kilometres) from one another. Applying three different species delimitation (SD) methods (sGMYC, mPTP and ABGD) of the molecular data, we could distinguish between four and 12 different molecular taxonomic operational units (MOTUs). Morphological analyses could confirm five distinct phenotypic clades that represent species new to science and are described here: Nannoniscus brenkei sp. nov., Nannoniscus hilario sp. nov., Nannoniscus magdae sp. nov., Nannoniscus menoti sp. nov. and Nannoniscus pedro sp. nov. Despite the assumed limited dispersal capacity of Nannoniscus species, we found haplotypes of two species to be geographically widespread (up to > 1400 km apart), as opposed to several divergent clades occurring in close vicinity or even sympatry. Geographic distance appeared to explain the phylogeographic structure of Nannoniscus species to some extent, although oceanographic features and level of environmental heterogeneity were probably equally important.

Eurycope producta Sars, 1868 and Eurycope inermis Hansen, 1916 are two widely distributed and highly abundant isopod species complexes within Icelandic waters, a region known for its highly variable environment. The two species complexes have bathymetric depth ranges from 103 to 2029 m (E. producta) and from 302 to 2113 m (E. inermis). Molecular evidence was used for species delimitation within these species complexes by analyzing nuclear (18S rDNA, H3) and mitochondrial (16S rDNA, COI) sequence data. Tree-based methods (BI and ML) and four species delimitation methods (ABGD, GMYC, NDT, PTP) were applied, in order to disentangle the two species complexes. A total of eight and four species clades could be identified within samples of the E. producta and E. inermis complexes and respectively included the closely related species E. dahli Svavarsson, 1987; E. hanseni Ohlin, 1901; and E. cornuta Sars, 1864. The morphological findings coincide with the observed molecular species clades. The elucidated species clades were geographically and bathymetrically much more restricted than previously assumed. Eight species clades featured depth spans of less than 400 m and only four species clades featured depth spans of 1000 to 1500 m. Only two species clades (E. producta sensu stricto and E. inermis sensu stricto) were found on both sides of the Greenland-Scotland Ridge. Further, species distribution maps were generated using random forest, to predict potential distributional patterns for the resolved species clades of the two species complexes. We present the first attempt of combining morphological, molecular, and species distribution models in marine isopods thus far.

Oecidiobranchus (Isopoda, Asellota) is distinctive among asellote isopod genera in that most of its known species occur in the Nordic Seas and the Arctic Ocean. Some of these species are known only from a few specimens (i.e., poorly known). We used a combined morphological and genetic approach to evaluate the diversity of Oecidiobranchus species in this region. On the basis of genetics, at least three species were recognized, representing Oecidiobranchus cf. nanseni, Oecidiobranchus cf. plebejum, and a third, probably undescribed species. Oecidiobranchus cf. plebejum was found at several locations to the north of the large Greenland-Iceland-Faeroe Ridge, while O. cf. nanseni occurred on both sides of the ridge; temporal or spatial changes during and after the last ice age may have contributed to the genetic differences of populations on each side of the ridge. The wide distribution of the genus in the Nordic Seas and the Arctic Ocean suggests that the genus has been present there for an extensive period.

We found 72 species for COI and 45 for 16 S by species delimitation among 186 (from 195 extracted) desmosomatid (144) and nannoniscid (42) sequenced specimens of a total of > 400 specimens for both families. Multiple “discovery”-type species delimitation methods were used, so that consistency across methods could be assessed: The ABGD analysis detected a barcode gap of 3–6% for COI and 4–6% for 16 S, in the whole dataset. Most putative species have a horizontally limited distribution along the Vema fracture zone, although the details depend in part on the interpretation of species delimitation analyses. Putative species were mostly restricted to the eastern or western Vema fracture zone, with only eight crossing the complete Vema fracture zone. Our data suggest that even robustly-sampled species exhibited small ranges; the range estimates calculable from present data were around 500 km, and three were on the order of 1000–2500 km. We chose an abundant, but geographically restricted species (Eugerdella egoni Tschesche and Brix sp. nov.) collected at a single site in the Vema transform fault, and two species (Prochelator barnacki Bober and Brix sp. nov. and Whoia sockei Brix and Kihara sp. nov.) with a broad, but disjunct distribution in the Vema fracture zone for taxonomic description.

A new family of paratanaoidean Tanaidacea – Paranarthrurellidae fam. nov. – is erected to accommodate two genera without family classification (Paratanaoidea incertae sedis), namely Armatognathia Kudinova-Pasternak, 1987 and Paranarthrurella Lang, 1971. Seven new species of Paranarthrurella and two of Armatognathia are described from material taken in different deep-sea areas of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The type species of Paranarthrurella — P. caudata (Kudinova-Pasternak, 1965) — is redescribed based on the paratype. The genus Cheliasetosatanais Larsen and Araújo-Silva, 2014 originally classified within Colletteidae is synonymised with Paranarthrurella, and Arthrura shiinoi Kudinova-Pasternak, 1973 is transferred to Armatognathia. Amended diagnoses of Armatognathia and Paranarthrurella genera are given. Choosing characters for distinguishing and defining both genera was supported by Principal Component Analysis. Designation of the new family is supported by molecular phylogenetic analysis of COI and 18S datasets. The distribution of all species currently included in the new family was visualised and their bathymetric distribution analysed.

Although crustal trenches of the hadal zone, a global feature of the deep ocean floor, have been known geologically for decades, the biological connections between hadal trenches and neighboring abyssal regions are only beginning to be understood. Within the hadal community, both endemism and species diversity of invertebrate taxa appear to be high; however, the presence of cryptic species implies that the true diversity may be much greater. Desmosomatids and nannoniscids (Isopoda: Asellota) are common components of deep-sea communities and apparently underwent an ancient and rapid radiation into the deep sea, creating high diversity, often with little associated morphological difference. We used an integrated morphological and molecular approach to investigate the species diversity of hadal isopods in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench and compare morphological and genetic relationships. Our analyses delineated at most 38 species from the deep KKT trench. Thirty-four of these species are new to science, and seven are likely cryptic species, revealed only by genetic species delimitation. The combined morphological-molecular approach proved especially powerful in cases where sexual dimorphism has made species diagnosis problematic, such as the genus Mirabilicoxa Hessler, 1970 . Across the study region, diversity declined sharply with increasing depth in the trench, and most species’ depth ranges were narrow, on the order of hundreds of meters, implicating a strong vertical gradient in promoting divergence. Eugerdella hadalis Golovan & Brix sp. nov., the only true hadal species from the dataset, is described.

Combined morphological and molecular analyses provided evidence for a new nannoniscid genus, Ketosoma gen. nov., including new species from abyssal waters of the equatorial NE Atlantic (eastern Vema Fracture Zone), SW Atlantic (Argentine Basin) as well as equatorial NE Pacific (Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone, CCZ). Using mitochondrial (COI and 16S) and nuclear (18S) DNA markers together with morphological information from light scanning and confocal laser scanning microscopy we found clear differences between Ketosoma and its putative sister taxon Thaumastosoma Hessler, 1970. The new genus can be distinguished from the latter by the presence of a robust seta on pereonite 1 anterolateral corner and the lack of a ventral spine on the female operculum and pereonite 7 amongst others. Different species delimitation (SD) analyses were performed alongside morphological assessment to delineate species within Ketosoma. Here, four new species are described: Ketosoma vemae gen. et sp. nov. and K. hessleri gen. et sp. nov. from the eastern Vema Fracture Zone, K. werneri gen. et sp. nov. from the Argentine Basin and K. ruehlemanni gen. et sp. nov. from the CCZ. There is morphological and genetic evidence for the presence of at least two further Ketosoma species from the CCZ. Species within Thaumastosoma are reassessed; Thaumastosoma platycarpus Hessler, 1970 and T. tenue Hessler, 1970 are redescribed based on type material and the diagnosis updated accordingly. Furthermore, a new Thaumastosoma species, T. diva sp. nov., is described from the Argentine Basin. Thaumastosoma distinctum (Birstein, 1963) and T. jebamoni (George, 2001) are assigned to Ketosoma, with the latter species regarded as a nomen dubium.

The Pleistocene and post-Pleistocene evolutionary history of many North Atlantic intertidal invertebrate species is well known, but the evolutionary history of the deep North Atlantic fauna is poorly understood, specifically whether colonization of the deep North Atlantic paralleled the patterns observed in shallow water. Contemporary pan-Atlantic species distributions could result from several colonization pathways that connected different regions of the Atlantic at different times (e.g. Arctic, Antarctic or Panamanian pathways). To test potential colonization pathways we quantified geographic variation in nuclear and mitochondrial markers from Atlantic samples ofNucula atacellana, a pan-Atlantic deep-sea protobranch bivalve, usingN. profundorumin the eastern central Pacific as an outgroup. We combined existing 16S data from North and South Atlantic populations ofN. atacellanawith new sequences of 16S, COI, and an intron of calmodulin from those populations, and newly sampled populations near Iceland. Population genetic analyses indicated a subtropical expansion via the Central American Seaway. We found no evidence for Transarctic migration to the Atlantic inN. atacellana, which suggests that colonization pathways may differ significantly between shallow- and deep-water fauna.

A molecular phylogeny of Protobranchia, the subclass of bivalve mollusks sister to the remaining Bivalvia, has long proven elusive, because many constituent lineages are deep-sea endemics, which creates methodological challenges for collecting and preserving genetic material. We obtained 74 representatives of all 12 extant protobranch families and investigated the internal phylogeny of this group using sequence data from five molecular loci (16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, and histone H3). Model-based and dynamic homology parsimony approaches to phylogenetic reconstruction unanimously supported four major clades of Protobranchia, irrespective of treatment of hypervariable regions in the nuclear ribosomal genes 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA. These four clades correspond to the superfamilies Nuculoidea (excluding Sareptidae), Nuculanoidea (including Sareptidae), Solemyoidea, and Manzanelloidea. Salient aspects of the phylogeny include (1) support for the placement of the family Sareptidae with Nuculanoidea; (2) the non-monophyly of the order Solemyida (Solemyidae + Nucinellidae); (3) and the non-monophyly of most nuculoid and nuculanoid genera and families. In light of this first family-level phylogeny of Protobranchia, we present a revised classification of the group. Estimation of divergence times in concert with analyses of diversification rates demonstrate the signature of the end-Permian mass extinction in the phylogeny of extant protobranchs.

We describe PCR primers and amplification protocols developed to obtain introns from conserved nuclear genes in deep-sea protobranch bivalves. Because almost no sequence data for protobranchs are publically available, mollusk and other protostome sequences from GenBank were used to design degenerate primers, making these loci potentially useful in other invertebrate taxa. Amplification and sequencing success varied across the test group of 30 species, and we present five loci spanning this range of outcomes. Intron presence in the targeted regions also varied across genes and species, often within single genera; for instance, the calmodulin and β-tubulin loci contained introns with high frequency, whereas the triose phosphate isomerase locus never contained an intron. In introns for which we were able to obtain preliminary estimates of polymorphism levels in single species, polymorphism was greater than traditional mitochondrial loci. These markers will greatly increase the ability to assess population structure in the ecologically important protobranchs, and may prove useful in other taxa as well.

The deep sea is a vast and essentially continuous environment with few obvious barriers to gene flow. How populations diverge and new species form in this remote ecosystem is poorly understood. Phylogeographical analyses have begun to provide some insight into evolutionary processes at bathyal depths ( 3000 m). Here, we quantify geographical and bathymetric patterns of genetic variation (16S rRNA mitochondrial gene) in the protobranch bivalve Ledella ultima, which is one of the most abundant abyssal protobranchs in the Atlantic with a broad bathymetric and geographical distribution. We found virtually no genetic divergence within basins and only modest divergence among eight Atlantic basins. Levels of population divergence among basins were related to geographical distance and were greater in the South Atlantic than in the North Atlantic. Ocean-wide patterns of genetic variation indicate basin-wide divergence that exceeds what others have found for abyssal organisms, but considerably less than bathyal protobranchs across similar geographical scales. Populations on either side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the North Atlantic differed, suggesting the Ridge might impede gene flow at abyssal depths. Our results indicate that abyssal populations might be quite large (cosmopolitan), exhibit only modest genetic structure and probably provide little potential for the formation of new species.

Pteropods and heteropods are two distinct groups of holoplanktonic gastropods whose species and genetic diversity remain poorly understood, despite their ubiquity in the world’s oceans. Some species apparently attain near cosmopolitan distributions, implying long-distance dispersal or cryptic species assemblages. We present the first multi-regional and species-rich molecular dataset of holoplanktonic gastropods, comprising DNA barcodes from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I subunit gene (COI) from 115 individuals of 41 species sampled from six ocean regions across the globe. Molecular analysis and assessment of barcoding utility supported the validity of several morphological subspecies and forms (e.g. of Creseis virgula and Limacina helicina), while others were not supported (e.g. Cavolinia uncinata). Significant genetic variation was observed among conspecific specimens collected in different geographic regions for some species, particularly in euthecosomatous pteropods. Several species of euthecosomes showed no evidence of genetic separation among distant ocean regions. Overall, we suggest some taxonomic revision of the holoplanktonic gastropods will be required, pending a more complete molecular inventory of these groups.

Species diversity of the metazoan holozooplankton assemblage of the Sargasso Sea, Northwest Atlantic Ocean, was examined through coordinated morphological taxonomic identification of species and DNA sequencing of a ∼650 base-pair region of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) as a DNA barcode (i.e., short sequence for species recognition and discrimination). Zooplankton collections were made from the surface to 5,000 meters during April, 2006 on the R/V R.H. Brown. Samples were examined by a ship-board team of morphological taxonomists; DNA barcoding was carried out in both ship-board and land-based DNA sequencing laboratories. DNA barcodes were determined for a total of 297 individuals of 175 holozooplankton species in four phyla, including: Cnidaria (Hydromedusae, 4 species; Siphonophora, 47); Arthropoda (Amphipoda, 10; Copepoda, 34; Decapoda, 9; Euphausiacea, 10; Mysidacea, 1; Ostracoda, 27); and Mollusca (Cephalopoda, 8; Heteropoda, 6; Pteropoda, 15); and Chaetognatha (4). Thirty species of fish (Teleostei) were also barcoded. For all seven zooplankton groups for which sufficient data were available, Kimura-2-Parameter genetic distances were significantly lower between individuals of the same species (mean=0.0114; S.D. 0.0117) than between individuals of different species within the same group (mean=0.3166; S.D. 0.0378). This difference, known as the barcode gap, ensures that mtCOI sequences are reliable characters for species identification for the oceanic holozooplankton assemblage. In addition, DNA barcodes allow recognition of new or undescribed species, reveal cryptic species within known taxa, and inform phylogeographic and population genetic studies of geographic variation. The growing database of “gold standard” DNA barcodes serves as a Rosetta Stone for marine zooplankton, providing the key for decoding species diversity by linking species names, morphology, and DNA sequence variation. In light of the pivotal position of zooplankton in ocean food webs, their usefulness as rapid responders to environmental change, and the increasing scarcity of taxonomists, the use of DNA barcodes is an important and useful approach for rapid analysis of species diversity and distribution in the pelagic community.

Structural adhesive joints are expected to retain integrity in their entire service-life that normally involves cyclic loading concurrent with environmental exposure. Under such a severe working condition, effective determination of fatigue life at different temperatures is crucial for reliable joint design. The main goal of this work was thus defined as evaluation of fatigue performance of adhesive joints at their extreme working temperatures in order to be compared with their fracture properties under static loading. A series of standard double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens have been bonded by three structural 3M epoxy adhesives selected from different applications. The specimens were tested under monotonic and cyclic opening loads (mode-I) in order to evaluate the quasi-static and fatigue performances of selected adhesives at room temperature, 80°C and -40°C. The test results revealed that the fatigue damage occurred at relatively low load levels when compared to quasi-static fracture forces. At room temperature, the maximum cyclic fatigue forces varied between 25% and 40% of corresponding quasi-static fracture loads of selected adhesives. More significant reductions in adhesive mechanical performances were observed at 80C. At cryogenic temperature, the adhesives had their own characterizations; mainly increasing the fatigue resistance but very sensitive to testing parameters such as loading rate or crosshead speed. In conclusion, the experimental observations showed a significant influence of fatigue loading on adhesive joints mechanical performances that should be considered in joint design, particularly at non-ambient temperatures.

Zooplankton species diversity and distribution are important measures of environmental change in the Arctic Ocean, and may serve as ‘rapid-responders’ of climate-induced changes in this fragile ecosystem. The scarcity of taxonomists hampers detailed and up-to-date monitoring of these patterns for the rarer and more problematic species. DNA barcodes (short DNA sequences for species recognition and discovery) provide an alternative approach to accurate identification of known species, and can speed routine analysis of zooplankton samples. During 2004–2008, zooplankton samples were collected during cruises to the central Arctic Ocean and Chukchi Sea. A ∼700 base-pair region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) gene was amplified and sequenced for 82 identified specimens of 41 species, including cnidarians (six hydrozoans, one scyphozoan), arthropod crustaceans (five amphipods, 24 copepods, one decapod, and one euphausiid); two chaetognaths; and one nemertean. Phylogenetic analysis used the Neighbor-Joining algorithm with Kimura-2-Parameter (K-2-P) distances, with 1000-fold bootstrapping. K-2-P genetic distances between individuals of the same species ranged from 0.0 to 0.2; genetic distances between species ranged widely from 0.1 to 0.7. The mtCOI gene tree showed monophyly (at 100% bootstrap value) for each of the 26 species for which more than one individual was analyzed. Of seven genera for which more than one species was analyzed, four were shown to be monophyletic; three genera were not resolved. At higher taxonomic levels, only the crustacean order Copepoda was resolved, with bootstrap value of 83%. The mtCOI barcodes accurately discriminated and identified known species of 10 taxonomic groups of Arctic Ocean holozooplankton. A comprehensive DNA barcode database for the estimated 300 described species of Arctic holozooplankton will allow rapid assessment of species diversity and distribution in this climate-vulnerable ocean ecosystem.

Previous genetic studies suggest Cape Cod, MA, as a phylogenetic break for benthic marine invertebrates; however, diffuse sampling in this area has hindered fine-scale determination of the break's location and underlying causes. Furthermore, some species exhibit breaks in different places, and others exhibit no breaks in this region. We analyze the phylogeographic patterns of 2 mitochondrial genes from 10 populations of the bamboo worm Clymenella torquata (Annelida: Maldanidae) focused around Cape Cod but extending from the Bay of Fundy, Canada, to New Jersey. A common invertebrate along the US coast, C. torquata, possesses life-history characteristics that should make it sensitive to factors such as dispersal barriers, bottlenecks, and founder events. As an inhabitant of soft sediments, C. torquata offers a unique contrast to existing research dominated by organisms dwelling on hard substrates. Our genetic data show a clear phylogenetic break and a cline of haplotype frequencies from north to south. Fine-scale sampling of populations on Cape Cod, combined with other sampled populations, confirm that this distinct break is not on the Cape Cod peninsula itself but to the south near a boundary of oceanic water masses. Low levels of gene flow occur in these populations, in an asymmetric manner congruent with coastal current patterns. No significant effect of Pleistocene glaciation was seen in the pattern of genetic diversity over the sampled range.

Three species of vestimentiferans are found at hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise (EPR). Tevnia jerichonana is an early colonist and Riftia pachyptila has the greatest biomass in established vent assemblages, but the role of Oasisia alvinae, a small species that occurs sporadically, is unknown. Anecdotal evidence suggests that O. alvinae may be abundant in the microhabitat underneath mussels. Previous studies have suggested that early T. jerichonana colonists may facilitate settlement of the late colonist R. pachyptila. To address potential mechanisms for the successional sequence and to explore the role of O. alvinae, we examined the effects of the presence of vestimentiferan (R. pachyptila and T. jerichonana) tubes and mussel (Bathymodiolus thermophilis) shell cover on recruitment of vestimentiferans on basalt blocks deployed at 9°50′N, 104°17′W on the EPR. A molecular assay was used to identify individuals to species since they were too small to be identified morphologically. Although colonists in both experiments belonged to all three species of vestimentiferans, only a few were T. jerichonana. Colonization of vestimentiferans did not increase in the presence of vestimentiferan tubes. The presence of mussel shell cover did not influence the proportions of R. pachyptila and O. alvinae, or the total number of colonists. Because the experimental blocks in this study were placed within dense clumps of R. pachyptila, we suggest that, while T. jerichonana may be an important cue for vestimentiferans settling at new vents, adult R. pachyptila also can act as a settlement cue for larvae. O. alvinae colonists were abundant in all of the treatments in our experiments, indicating that, although adults of this species are apparently rare at these sites, O. alvinae can settle in abundance if a suitable micro-environment is available.

Direct-developing lineages of the genus Lasaea are common constituents of both oceanic island and continental rocky shore crevice faunas in the eastern North Atlantic. We utilized mitochondrial gene sequence variation to flesh out the phylogenetic relationships of individuals sam- pled from 2 Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira) and from downstream continental (Iber- ian) sites. There was no evidence for colonization of the islands by upstream western North Atlantic congeners. Of 5 Lasaea clades detected in Iberia, 1 was also present on Madeira, whereas 4 of the 5 had representatives on the Azores. Madeira did not share haplotypes with the other sampling loca- tions. In contrast, the Azorean and Iberian samples shared multiple haplotypes and our phylogenetic tree topologies were consistent with a minimum of 6 inferred migration events across the >1400 km oceanic expanse separating these 2 regional populations. Three of the putative migration events involved a predominantly island clade whose topology was consistent with colonization by ancestral continental lineages, extensive island cladogenesis, and secondary downstream migrations back to the mainland. The remaining 3 inferred migration events were distributed across the tips of the phy- logenetic trees, a topology consistent with evolutionarily recent migrations against the prevailing current fields. Our results indicate that the pattern of easterly surface flow in the study area may gen- erate differentially effective dispersal filters downstream of the Azorean and Madeiran archipelagos. Evidence for countercurrent migration in marine populations should be assessed in light of the total- ity of surface-flow patterns in the study system, not merely the prevailing one.

We have reduced the effect of thermal gradients across a fiber grating-based dispersion compensation module by embedding the grating in a thermal conductor surrounded by a thermal insulator, which keeps the grating length at a nearly uniform temperature. We modeled the package performance with finite-element methods and confirmed the results experimentally. We have found no measurable perturbation in the device dispersion during thermal testing, even as 80/spl deg/C thermal gradients were imposed across the module.

Ecological speciation probably plays a more prominent role in diversification than previously thought, particularly in marine ecosystems where dispersal potential is great and where few obvious barriers to gene flow exist. This may be especially true in the deep sea where allopatric speciation seems insufficient to account for the rich and largely endemic fauna. Ecologically driven population differentiation and speciation are likely to be most prevalent along environmental gradients, such as those attending changes in depth. We quantified patterns of genetic variation along a depth gradient (1600-3800m) in the western North Atlantic for a protobranch bivalve ( Nuculaatacellana ) to test for population divergence. Multilocus analyses indicated a sharp discontinuity across a narrow depth range, with extremely low gene flow inferred between shallow and deep populations for thousands of generations. Phylogeographical discordance occurred between nuclear and mitochondrial loci as might be expected during the early stages of species formation. Because the geographic distance between divergent populations is small and no obvious dispersal barriers exist in this region, we suggest the divergence might reflect ecologically driven selection mediated by environmental correlates of the depth gradient. As inferred for numerous shallow-water species, environmental gradients that parallel changes in depth may play a key role in the genesis and adaptive radiation of the deep-water fauna.

Suprascapular nerve entrapment by a ganglion cyst can produce pain and shoulder dysfunction. We report six cases with the associated arthroscopic intraarticular findings of a posterior capsulolabral injury (only the second such description) and review the literature. Based on the current literature and our experience, we document our treatment algorithm for suprascapular nerve entrapment secondary to a ganglion cyst. We believe it is necessary to evaluate and treat the intraarticular pathology as well as the ganglion cyst/nerve entrapment to successfully manage these patients.

A membrane deflection technique has been developed to measure the isotropic residual stress in biaxially-constrained coatings. The technique has been demonstrated on various materials, including polyimide, latex rubber and photoresist coatings. Stress values obtained from membrane deflection compared well with results obtained from time-averaged vibrational holographic interferometry except for values obtained from samples where rigidity effects were found to be important. A criterion based on the thickness, rigidity, stress and sample radius is also discussed, establishing the applicability of the technique to samples of low rigidity.

A high-pressure curing technique was developed to help determine the effects of solvent presence during the thermal curing of the polyimide poly (N,N'-bis-phenoxyphenylpyro-mellitimide) (PMDA-ODA). A powder form of this aromatic polyimide was produced from a polyamic acid solution using the high-pressure thermal curing technique. Preliminary characterization of the powder indicates a high degree of crystallinity with a measured density of 1.46 ± 0.01 g/cm3 and a distinct melting point of 594°C. The addition of chemical curing agents to the polyamic acid solution prior to thermal treatment reduced the amount of crystallinity observed in the cured material. Molecular weight measurements of the polyamic acid precursor and powder suggest that the high degree of order observed in the powder is a result of degradation during cure. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.11

Adhesive joints are normally subjected to different working conditions in their service-life. This may involve both static and cyclic loadings. In many instances, a combination of various loading conditions occurs that can be further provoked by exposure to hostile environments. This, in turn, leads to the need to characterize the joint behavior under different combinations of working conditions. Extensive experimental tests are needed in order to evaluate the joint performance under such variable working conditions. This implies the development of low cost and efficient testing techniques that reduces the extra needs to operator time and sophisticated test procedures. Taking this objective into account, a novel technique in mechanical evaluation of adhesive joints was developed in the present work. Alternative monotonic and variable-amplitude cyclic loads were applied on the same double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens under cleavage mode. DCB specimens were made from aluminum bars joined together by a two-part toughened structural adhesive. On one face, a series of crack detection sensors were bonded to control the testing machine for switching between monotonic and cyclic loadings. The testing machine had two aligned hydraulic actuators applying bending forces on the upper and lower arms of the DCB specimen. The effects of testing frequency and applied load history were also investigated within a range of 4 to 20 Hz for a nominal adhesive thickness of 0.5 mm. The fatigue performance of each configuration was represented by a power-law relationship and was compared for different testing conditions. The test results revealed that the fatigue damage occurred at relatively lower load levels (35%) when compared with monotonic fracture load. The power-law constants for the tested adhesive were influenced by testing frequency but not sensitive to loading order.

A model based on linear elasticity is presented describing the stresses arising during the processing of polymeric films on tenter frames. The model demonstrates that large in-plane shear stresses, resulting from gradients in the line, produce anisotropic stresses in the film. The magnitude of the anisotropy is found to vary transversely across the line, becoming isotropic in the center and achieving maximum values at the edges of the line. The principal directions of the stress tend to lie at ±45° to the machine direction but may be altered by machine and transverse drawing by the frame. These results agree with orientation measurements reported in the literature on polyimide films produced on tentering frames.

Arrow worms (Phylum Chaetognatha) are abundant planktonic organisms and important predators in many food webs; yet, the classification and evolutionary relationships among chaetognath species remain poorly understood. A seemingly simple body plan is underlain by subtle variation in morphological details, obscuring the affinities of species within the phylum. Many species achieve near global distributions, spanning the same latitudinal bands in all ocean basins, while others present disjunct ranges, in some cases with the same species apparently found at both poles. To better understand how these complex evolutionary and geographic variables are reflected in the species makeup of chaetognaths, we analyze DNA barcodes of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) gene, from 52 specimens of 14 species of chaetognaths collected mainly from the Atlantic Ocean. Barcoding analysis was highly successful at discriminating described species of chaetognaths across the phylum, and revealed little geographical structure. This barcode analysis reveals hitherto unseen genetic variation among species of arrow worms, and provides insight into some species relationships of this enigmatic group.

Mitochondrial genomes are useful tools for inferring evolutionary history. However, many taxa are poorly represented by available data. Thus, to further understand the phylogenetic potential of complete mitochondrial genome sequence data in Annelida (segmented worms), we examined the complete mitochondrial sequence for Clymenella torquata (Maldanidae) and an estimated 80% of the sequence of Riftia pachyptila (Siboglinidae). These genomes have remarkably similar gene orders to previously published annelid genomes, suggesting that gene order is conserved across annelids. This result is interesting, given the high variation seen in the closely related Mollusca and Brachiopoda. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence, amino acid sequence, and gene order all support the recent hypothesis that Sipuncula and Annelida are closely related. Our findings suggest that gene order data is of limited utility in annelids but that sequence data holds promise. Additionally, these genomes show AT bias (approximately 66%) and codon usage biases but have a typical gene complement for bilaterian mitochondrial genomes.

Forty-six second-chromosome lines of Drosophila melanogaster isolated from five natural populations were surveyed for restriction map variation in a 65-kb region surrounding the gene (Ddc) encoding dopa decarboxylase (DDC). Sixty-nine restriction sites were scored, 13 of which were polymorphic. Average heterozygosity per nucleotide was estimated to be 0.005. Eight large (0.7-5.0 kb) inserts, two small inserts (100 and 200 bp) and three small deletions (100-300 bp) were also observed across the 65-kb region. We see no evidence for a reduction in either nucleotide heterozygosity or insertion/deletion variation in the central 26-kb segment containing Ddc and a dense cluster of lethal complementation groups and transcripts (greater than or equal to 9 genes) compared to that seen in the adjacent regions (totaling 39 kb) in which only a single gene and transcript has been detected, or to that observed for other gene regions in D. melanogaster. The distribution of restriction site variation shows no significant departure from that expected under an equilibrium neutral model. However insertions and deletions show a significant departure from neutrality in that they are too rare in frequency, consistent with them being deleterious on average. Significant linkage disequilibrium among variants exists across much of the 65-kb region. Lower regional rates of recombination combined with the influence of polymorphic chromosomal inversions, rather than epistatic selection among genes in the dense cluster, probably are sufficient explanations for the creation and/or maintenance of the linkage disequilibrium observed in the Ddc region. We have also assayed adult DDC enzyme activity in these same lines. Twofold variation in activity among lines is observed within our sample. Significant associations are observed between level of DDC enzyme activity and restriction map variants. Surprisingly, one line with a 5.0-kb insert within an intron and one line with a 1.5-kb insert near the 5' end of Ddc each show normal adult DDC activities.

Around 1650 a Neapolitan named Laurent Tonti fled to France to escape civil disorders in his native land. Before long the Italian promoter's schemes to replenish the public treasury captured the ear and imagination of Louis XIV's powerful minister, Cardinal Mazarin. The monarchy, in fact, rewarded Tonti with an annual pension.1

T WHAT early American fiscal policymakers derived a good many ideas from England is beyond doubt. Obvious examples are Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton's funding system, sinking fund, and Bank of the United States. Less publicized is Hamilton's unrealized scheme to revive a curious sort of life annuity known as the tontine. The episode belies Hamilton's reputation as an advocate of perpetual government indebtedness; in fact, he envisioned his tontine as part of a conversion scheme leading to partial liquidation of the national debt. It is no accident that the proposal Hamilton mentioned in his Report Relative to a Provision for the Support of Public Credit (I790) resembled quite closely Prime Minister William Pitt's tontine of I789, for in matters of public finance, at least, Hamilton believed that success was related to adopting the "sounds and appearances" of orthodoxy.1 To him that meant England. Hamilton's tontine, in other words, came from a financially respectable source. But if the tontine was politically acceptable in England at that moment, it had become discredited, as far too expensive a luxury, in France, which had launched a series of ambitious tontine schemes during the hundred years prior to Hamilton's proposal. It was in France that shortly after i650 Lorenzo Tonti attempted to sell his novel venture to a royal government pressed for money. Although Tonti's original plan failed, almost forty years later the French crown, in the face of war and in search of more revenue, saw fit to rehabilitate his project. What resulted was a sophisticated variety of life annuity with obvious appeal to speculators. Tonti had pointed out that by his plan one could eventually make a fortune.2 The life annuity, from which the tontine stems, had been known for centuries but had not been adopted by the French crown as a steady source
