In the summer of 1999, the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline Company excavated a 3-m-deep trench across northern Nova Scotia exposing a continuous transect of surficial deposits along a 237-km corridor. A Lateglacial palaeosol with preserved A horizon (peat and wood) buried under 2–10 m of surface till consisted mainly of herbaceous plant material with few large wood fragments. Large pieces of wood from two sites yielded conventional radiocarbon ages of 10.9 14C kyr BP (GSC-6435) and 10.8 14C kyr BP (GSC-6419). Previous to these finds, only a few localities were known to reveal till overlying peat, so the extent of Younger Dryas (YD) glaciers could not be clearly established. Glacial flow lines indicated by fabric and fluting of the YD surface till sheet in northern Nova Scotia and ice-marginal deposits imply an ice cap centred over eastern P.E.I. and the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. This glacier also dammed a series of glacial lakes against the highland-rimmed west coast of Cape Breton Island. Glaciers developed and advanced during the YD in the uplands and offshore shelf areas from small remnants of Late Wisconsinan ice. Renewed ice growth was enabled by increased precipitation and local cooling in the Gulf of St. Lawrence due to deflection of the jet stream and expanded sea-ice cover in the North Atlantic. The YD may provide an analogy to glacier development in Maritime Canada during the interglacial/glacial transition.

The start of deglaciation is recorded in the Minas Basin region of Nova Scotia by the deltaic, glaciofluvial and glaciomarine sediments of the Five Islands Formation. Shell dates on bottomset beds of a delta at Spencers Island range from 14,300 to 12,600, 14C yearsB.P. The time of complete deglaciation of Nova Scotia is still unknown; the uncertainty is at least partially due to evidence for a climatic oscillation at the end of the Late Wisconsinan. Peat beds were deposited during the interval between 12,700 and 10,500 B.P. They overlie previous glacial and fluvial deposits and are overlain by deposits of various origins. Pollen in these peat beds records the migration of spruce into the region indicating climatic warming, and a subsequent deterioration of climate is recorded by the return of tundra-like flora. The peat beds are truncated by a variety of deposits, including fluvial gravel and sand, lacustrine sand, silt and clay, and diamictons. Periglacial landforms and structures have been observed in some of these deposits. At Collins Pond, on the shore of Chedabucto Bay, a diamicton overlying a peat bed is characterized by strong fabrics parallel to the trend of other ice-flow landforms in the region. The evidence suggests that at least some of these deposits are glacigenic, indicating that glaciers were active in Nova Scotia until about 10,000 B.P.

Seven of the more than twenty five buried organic deposits in Atlantic Canada assigned to pre-Wisconsinan non-glacial intervals possibly relate to the climatic optimum of the Sangamon Interglaciation, that is substage 5e of the deep-sea oxygen isotope record. These sites are East Bay and Green Point on Cape Breton Island. Addington Forks and East Milford in mainland Nova Scotia. Le Bassin and Portage-du-Cap on the Iles de la Madeleine, Québec, and Woody Cove, Newfoundland. Except for Woody Cove, none of the sites records a complete climatic cycle, and the sequence of events must be pieced together from their disparate records. The spectra, characterized by significant amounts of thermophilous taxa that are not as abundant or present in the region today, are similar in general to Holocene spectra at sites immediately south of the lower Great Lakes. Between 815 and 755 cm depth, organic sedimentation is interrupted by pink clay deposition related to a period of slope instability. During this period Picea pollen is replaced by Betula, Salix and AInus while Gramineae and Cyperaceae representation increases, indicating cooler climate. Above this interval, 755 cm of gyttja represents a second period of organic accumulation. Analysis of this sediment reveals the same pollen succession observed in the basal organic silt, indicating warmer climate. The palynological succession typical of the Atlantic Region follows : pine, hemlock, birch, beech and finally spruce and herbs. Seven 14C dates define the chronology. The four lower dates are deemed anomalous, and an alternative chronology for this part is proposed. Environmental conditions (vegetation and climate) of Maritime Canada are reconstructed as a regional contribution to a national synthesis on the paleoenvironment of Canada 6000 yr BP. Ten new sites, including three complete sequences and seven short sequences bracketing the 6 ka period, are added to the existing pollen dataset for this region. The vegetation prevalent 6000 yr BP in New Brunswick was a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with pine, mostly white pine (Pinus strobus) in the northwest, and a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) in the south and southeast. In the northwest, fir (Abies) replaced pine at high elevations and a boreal forest grew on the New Brunswick Highlands. The dominant vegetation at 6000 yr BP in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia was a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with hemlock dominating. Cape Breton Island was covered by a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with pine and/or fir, except for the southern part of the Island where hemlock was probably present. Overburden removal for quarrying operations at the Milford Gypsum Quarry, East Milford, Nova Scotia, exposed 2 m of compacted and distorted peat and organic clays with abundant plant remains, associated with inorganic and laminated clays and sands. The non-glacial sediments were underlain by a grey till-like deposit and overlain by more than 20 m of red till. Wood (Larix sp.) from the nonglacial sediments produced a radiocarbon date of > 50,000 years BP (GSC-1642). Pollen analysis of the organic sediments shows a basal assemblage characterized by a variety of hardwood pollen genera including Fagus, Ulmus, Acer, Quercus and Tilia. Higher in the sequence Betula pollen increases and becomes the dominant pollen type. Towards the upper part of the organic unit, Picea and Abies balsamea replace the hardwood genera. Alnus is the most abundant pollen type at the top of the sequence. Wood, seeds, moss and Coleoptera remains add to the environmental reconstruction. The evidence as a whole leads to the conclusion that the latter part of an interglacial interval, probably the Sangamon, is represented. Hardwood forests dominated by a variety of thermophilous hardwood genera attest to a climate at least as warm as the present in the area. As the climate deteriorated, Betula became dominant. The deglaciation of Nova Scotia is reconstructed using the AMS-dated chronology of lake sediments and buried organic sections exposed in the basins of former glacial lakes. Ice cleared out of the Bay of Fundy around 13.5 ka, punctuated by a brief read- vance ca. 13-12.5 ka (Ice Flow Phase 4). Glacial Lake Shubenacadie (1) formed in central Nova Scotia, impounded by a lobe of ice covering the northern Bay of Fundy outlet. Drainage was re-routed to the Atlantic Ocean until the Fundy outlet became ice free after 12 ka. When this lake drained, bogs and fens formed on the lake plain during climatic warming. Organic sediment (gyttja) began to accumulate in lake basins throughout Nova Scotia. Glacierization during the Younger Dryas period (ca. 10.8 ka) resulted in the inundation of lakes and lake plains with mineral sediment. The nature and intensity of this mineral sediment flux or "oscillation" varies from south to northern regions. Southern lakes simply record changes in total organic content whereas northern lakes, where most buried peat sections are found, feature a thick inorganic sediment layer. Glacial ice or permanent snow cover and seasonal melting are essential in the formation of this mineral sediment layer; both to provide the water source for erosion, and to prevent plant re- colonization and landscape stabilization. Some northern lakes do not appear to record the Younger Dryas event, with organic accumulation starting around 10 ka. During the Younger Dryas, fine and coarse-grained deposits were deposited in Glacial Lake Shubenacadie (2) and other lowland areas at elevations similar to former (12 ka) lake levels, impounded by re-invigorated residual ice caps and permanent snow/aufeis., Il s'agit d'une reconstitution à partir de la chronologie par spectométrie de masse (SMA) de sédiments lacustres et de certaines coupes de matériaux organiques enfouis dans les bassins d'anciens lacs glaciaires. Fossil records from sites overridden by or adjacent to the Laurentide Ice Sheet indicate that the climate of the last interglaciation (Oxygen-Isotope Substage 5e, ca. 130-116 ka) was warmer than today. Following the last interglaciation, the Laurentide Ice Sheet first developed during Stage 5 over Keewatin, Quebec and Baffin Island. Along its northern margin, the ice sheet reached its maximum extent of the last glaciation during Stage 5. The ice sheet advanced across Baffin Island onto the continental shelf early during Stage 5 (5d?), whereas the advance into the western Canadian Arctic occurred late during Stage 5 (5b?). The ice sheet also may have advanced into the St Lawrence Lowland during Substage 5b, although this event may be younger (Stage 4). The Hudson Bay lowland became ice-free during Substage 5a. Retreat of the ice sheet on Baffin Island occurred during late Stage 5, probably Substage 5a. The exact timing of retreat from the western Canadian Arctic is unknown, but it occurred before 48 ka. The southern sector, including the St Lawrence Lowland, was ice-free during late Stage 5. The Hudson Bay lowland may have remained ice free through Stage 4 and much of Stage 3. Because of conflicting chronologies, however, it is more likely that this area was glaciated throughout Stage 3 and perhaps Stage 4. Nevertheless, the data demonstrate that the lowland was ice-free during part of the last glaciation. An independent ice cap developed over the Appalachian Uplands and advanced across Nova Scotia during Stage 4, perhaps as far as the edge of the continental shelf. The ice cap remained active over Nova Scotia as a setellite to the Laurentide Ice Sheet throughout the remainder of the last glaciation. The ice sheet advanced into the St Lawrence Lowland during Stage 4 and subsequently overwhelmed the local ice cap in the Appalachian Uplands, advancing perhaps into northern New England, but not farther south. The Lowland remained covered by the ice sheet until late Stage 2. The ice sheet may also have advanced into the Lake Ontario basin during Stage 4. The position of the northern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during Stage 4 is not known, but it remained an unknown distance behind its maximum position reached during Stage 5. Cores from Baffin Bay indicate a substantial decrease in high-latitude glaciation during Stage 4. Following retreat, the Keewatin sector of the ice sheet may have remained over much of northwestern Canada as a quasi-stable ice mass until it readvanced during Stage 2. Similarly, the Baffin Island sector of the ice sheet may have remained largely intact. The southern margin of the ice sheet may have advanced into the Lake Ontario basin and upper Mississippi Valley during the middle of Stage 3 (ca. 50 ka), reaching its maximum extent of the last glaciation during Stage 2 (ca. 18–21 ka). Advance of the northern margin was younger (ca. 8–13 ka) than that of the southern margin; this advance was less extensive than the penultimate advance (Stage 5). Paleoenvironmental records indicate that the last interglaciation in areas covered by and near the Cordilleran Ice Sheet was as warm as, or warmer than, present. The Cordilleran Ice Sheet appears to have developed during Stage 5 or 4. At that time, it advanced over southern British Columbia and into the northern Puget Lowland. There is no record of this event in northern areas that were later covered by the ice sheet. The ice sheet disappeared before 59 ka, at the beginning of a lengthy nonglacial interval. Paleoenvironmental records indicate that climate was similar to the present during part of this interval. The ice sheet was absent, and glaciers probably were confined to mountain areas, throughout Stage 3. Climatic deterioration marking the end of this nonglacial interval may have begun as early as 29 ka. By 14–15 ka, the ice sheet had achieved its maximum extent of the last glaciation. Because there are few suitable dating methods capable of resolving events beyond the radiocarbon limit and because sites that preserve a record of events from the last glaciation are spatially restricted, we consider this synthesis as tentative and subject to significant revision as dating methods improve. Nevertheless, this perspective of the North American ice sheets through the last glaciation demonstrates their complex and dynamic behavior and attendant rapid fluctuations in ice volume.

Numerous deposits of organic, shallow-pond sediments and wetland peat accumulations buried by minerogenic sediments have been discovered throughout Nova Scotia. They are interpreted as representing a late-glacial climatic oscillation correlative with the Allerod/Younger Dryas event of Europe and the North Atlantic Ocean. The organic deposits began forming during the warm or warming interval following deglaciation and often record a transition to colder conditions. The climatic reversion recorded in many deposits began about 10.8 ka BP and continued or sustained cooling culminated in the burial of the organic deposits by minerogenic sediments indicative of solifluction and mass-wasting processes. Some deposits provide strong evidence for regeneration or rejuvenation of local glaciers. As the organic deposits are not as susceptible as lake sediments to contamination by old carbon, they provide a more reliable chronological framework for deglaciation and late-glacial vegetational history. Palynological evidence shows that pioneer herb tundra communities colonized some areas shortly after 13 ka BP. Willow and birch shrubs followed soon after. Spruce woodlands had migrated into the region prior to 10.8 ka BP but had not yet reached the northeast mainland and Cape Breton Island. Cooling after 10.8 ka BP decimated tree populations and favoured a return to shrub and herb communities. The record in the buried deposits was then truncated by deposition of minerogenic sediments, and lake sediment sequences from deeper basins with continuous sedimentation are required to complete the record.

An investigation of the chemistry and diatoms in the sediments of a small hardwater meromictic lake in Quebec indicated remains of both freshwater and brackish (halophilic) water diatoms in the organic sediments laid down after the lake was isolated by isostatic rebound from the Champlain Sea, ∼11,000 yr. ago. Water in deeper strata of the lake evidently was not completely fresh, giving rise to ectogenic meromixis. The loss of marine salts from the lake is believed to have taken 3000 yr. or so and that as this happened, salts of biological origin gradually accumulated in the monimolimnion so that maintenance of meromixis became biogenic. The sediment chemistry reflects primary successional changes in the vegetation of the area rather than a decline of ectogenic meromixis. As forest cover developed and soils stabilised on the rebounding land, erosional processes gave way to leaching processes as the source of nutrients to the lake. The appearance of eutrophic indicator diatoms, and an increased flux of nutrients to the sediments, suggest that a cycle of eutrophication occurred in the lake following the decline of hemlock, ∼4800 yr. ago. The recent sediments show an increase in concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb as a result of anthropogenic activities.

Attempts1–5 to relate late-glacial events in northeastern North America to the well-documented climato- and chrono-stratigraphy of Europe and the British Isles6 have not been considered convincing because the evidence presented was from isolated sites, and could therefore be interpreted as local fluctuations not related to a general, widespread climatic change7–10. However, recent palyno-logical studies in northeastern North America postulating a late-glacial climatic oscillation11–15 have caused renewed interest in relating such an oscillation to the Allerod/younger Dryas event. We have extended our preliminary results from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick13,14, and here present the evidence for a climatic event in Atlantic Canda. This event involved a warming trend before 11,000 yr BP that was interrupted by a cold period which persisted until the abrupt Holocene warming at ∼10,000 yr BP. We propose a possible mechanism to link this event with that of Europe.

Nonglacial deposits in northern Ontario that may date to the last interglacial interval are well known from the Hudson Bay Lowlands where they have been described in sections along several river valleys. Soil horizons, peat beds and other organic sediment sequences comprise the Missinaibi Formation of the Moose River Basin studied for pollen and macrofossils. Results suggest that the climate was as warm or warmer than present, and spruce woodlands prevailed among broad expanses of bog and fen. The Beaver River peat records conditions similar to the present in the Fort Severn area with open spruce woodlands dispersed in peatlands. South of the Lowlands in the Timmins area, a widespread organic-silt horizon termed the Owl Creek beds is stratigraphically equivalent to the Missinaibi Formation. The waning phase of a warm interval is represented, with early climate possibly similar to the present and the later climate much cooler. Correlation of the Missinaibi Formation with substage 5e of the deep-sea oxygen isotope record is corroborated by amino acid results on marine shells from some associated units. Analysis of shells from beneath the Beaver River peat bed indicate that this interval may be considerably younger, possibly substage 5c or, more likely, 5a. This study demonstrates that lakes located near the coast, close to large bodies of water, can document sea-level fluctuations and the subtle sea-land interaction that governs coastal areas. At Island Lake, located close to the head of Baie des Chaleurs, northern New Brunswick, the postglacial marine transgression corresponds with a reversal from a cold and dry herb and shrub tundra environment to open pioneer forest that was warmer and wetter. Successive incursions of poplar/aspen and spruce were succeeded by boreal forest dominated by spruce, alder and birch. A forest dominated by alder and fir, indicators of wetter and even colder local conditions followed. Paleoclimatic reconstruction inferred from pollen stratigraphy indicates that an early warming period culminating ca. 9450 BP, was followed by a period when temperatures remained cool. At the same time, the annual precipitation rose sharply, suggesting increased availability of moisture in this area. This is interpreted as a cooling effect due to the proximity to a large body of water to the study site and is attributed to the marine transgression into Baie des Chaleurs following the discharge of glacial lakes Agassiz and Barlow-Ojibway into the Great Lakes and Goldthwait Sea and the isostatic adjustment of the landmass. The cooling effect was recorded by a vegetation change from ca. 9450 to 8100 BP. Within that period, from ca. 8500 to ca. 8400 BP, the vegetation did not record the effect of the proximity to the sea. This period is postulated to be a period of low water levels in the Baie. Recovery to the regional climate norm occurred after 8100 BP when the climate was warmer than today. Peatlands cover extensive parts of northeastern Manitoba that have low relief and impermeable substrates, with peat thicknesses varying between 25 and 400 cm. Peat reserves average 1.5 x 106 m3/km2. Fens, forested plateau bogs, and polygonal plateau bogs are the prevalent peatland types. The thickest peat deposits consist of Sphagnum bogs that developed on glaciolacustrine or marine silt. Thinner deposits are composed of fen peat, or bog peat developed on sandy till. There is a positive relationship between peat thickness and time since postglacial emergence of the land. Also, recently emerged areas are dominated by fen peat, whereas bog peat is more prevalent on older surfaces. Pollen analysis of peat cores show that spruce trees have been abundant in the region south of Churchill for the past 6300 years. Local changes in peat type and accumulation rate occurred as bog and fen habitats changed, probably in response to changes in water table induced by aggradation and degradation of permafrost. Other taxa typical of boreal forest occupied suitable habitats similar to today, with bog and fen habitats increasing as paludification continued through time., Dans le nord-est du Manitoba, les tourbières occupent de vastes superficies peu accidentées et dont le substrat est imperméable. Numerous Quaternary organic deposits of various lithologies beneath one or more till units of Wisconsinan age have been discovered in boreholes and exposures in coastal bluffs, quarries and river banks at widespread localities throughout Atlantic Canada. Ongoing palynological and macro-fossil studies, still in a preliminary stage at many sites, reveal a variety of environments from forests dominated by thermophilous hardwood genera and white pine, to mixed temperate hardwood and conifer forests, to boreal coniferous forests of spruce and balsam fir, and forest tundra and tundra communities characterized by spruce, shrubs and herbs. Lithologie and pollen stratigraphie relationships and radiocarbon, amino acid and Thorium/Uranium dating allow a tentative assignment to the Sangamonian Stage and possibly to Early and Middle Wisconsinan time. Three intervals of organic accumulation are apparent: an early interval, when climate became warmer than the present; a second interval, when climate was similar to the present; and a third interval, with cooler climate. The latter interval is characterized by at least three climatic cycles, each one cooler than the previous cycle. Four paleosols were intersected in a core drilled into the colluvial fill of a largely buried meltwater channel that was last active during the youngest of the pre-Reid glaciation (0.99-0.78 Ma) in the Dawson Range, Yukon Territory. The paleosols are classified as Podzols. The sedimentary sequence and paleosols indicate that at least two middle Pleistocene glacial and interglacial periods are represented in the core. Sediments ranging in age from Tertiary to Late Quaternary are exposed at Duck Hawk Bluffs near Sachs Harbour on Banks Island (NWT). Fossil pollen and macrofossils of plants and arthropods from various nonglacial sediments at Duck Hawk Bluffs and related sites on Banks and Victoria islands make it possible to infer some of the climatic/biotic changes during that time span. At the time of deposition of the Miocene-Pliocene Beaufort Formation, southern Banks Island supported a rich coniferous forest, containing several species of conifers and various hardwoods. An upper member of the Beaufort Fm. is characterized by a more depauperate coniferous forest assemblage, yet still contains plants now foreign to the entire NWT. The late Tertiary/early Quaternary Worth Point Formation was deposited when larch-dominated forest-tundra characterized southern Banks Island. Larch may have grown on the island during the following Morgan Bluffs Interglaciation (>730 ka), but in other respects the flora and fauna of that time seem to have been low Arctic in character. Similar conditions existed during the Cape Collinson Interglaciation ( = Sangamon), though by that time, coniferous trees had definitely disappeared from the island., Les falaises Duck Hawk, près de Sachs Harbour, présentent des sédiments dont l'âge varie du Tertiaire jusqu'au Quaternaire supérieur. Ein hôherer Teil der Beaufort-Formation ist durch eine ârmere Nadelbaumbewaldung gekennzeichnet, enthàlt jedoch immer noch Pflanzen, die heute in den gesamten Nord-West-Gebieten unbekannt sind.
